On a Chromecast with Google TV or a Google TV Streamer, open All settings from the gear icon, choose Display & Sound, then select Advanced display settings when it appears. Resolution, frame-rate matching, dynamic range, color format, game mode and HDR format selection are either inside that submenu or listed directly under Display & Sound.
If your television has Google TV built in rather than using a separate Chromecast or Google TV Streamer, the same controls may be in the television maker’s own Picture, Display, HDMI or Input menus. Google’s streaming-device instructions do not guarantee identical menus on every Google TV television.

Where advanced display settings are located
The menu path depends on what is running Google TV. A Chromecast with Google TV and a Google TV Streamer expose device-level output controls. A television with Google TV integrated may put picture and HDMI controls in the manufacturer’s television menus instead.

- Turn on the streaming device and the connected television.
- At the top-right corner of the TV screen, select the gear icon.
- Choose All settings.
- Open Display & Sound.
- Select the control you need. Depending on the device and TV, it may be called Resolution, Text scaling, Dynamic range & color format or Match content frame rate.
- Open Advanced display settings if that entry is present. Google lists Allow game mode and Format selection in this area.
Some firmware versions place a control directly under Display & Sound instead of inside the advanced submenu. The absence of an “Advanced display settings” heading does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable; inspect the individual controls shown on that screen.

Televisions with Google TV built in
On an all-in-one Google TV, look in the TV manufacturer’s own menus when a setting is missing from the Google streaming-device path. Common locations include Picture, Display, HDMI and Input. Menu names and available choices vary with the television model, firmware and the capabilities reported by the connected equipment.
Do not assume that a Google TV television has the same advanced-output controls as a Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer. The documented path above applies directly to those separate streaming devices.
What each display control does
| Control | Purpose | What to know before changing it |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Chooses a supported output resolution for the connected display. | If video problems persist, Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends testing 1080p instead of 4K. |
| Match content frame rate | Lets the streaming device match the source content’s frame rate when the feature is supported. | This is separate from resolution. Changing one does not automatically change the other. |
| Dynamic range & color format | Controls the available dynamic-range and color-format behavior. | Choices depend on what the device, cable path and television report as compatible. |
| Allow game mode | Allows game mode, which is intended to reduce latency and improve game response. | The option is listed under Advanced display settings when the device exposes it. |
| Format selection | Determines whether HDR formats are selected automatically by apps or chosen manually. | Manual selection is useful as a diagnostic step when HDR causes a picture problem. |
| Text scaling | Adjusts the scale of interface text where the device supports the control. | It is an interface-visibility setting, not a method for increasing video resolution. |
How to change Google TV resolution
Use resolution changes as a controlled troubleshooting test rather than assuming the highest number is always best. The device can output only resolutions supported by the connected television and HDMI chain.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the gear icon at the top right of the TV screen.
- Select All settings > Display & Sound.
- Choose Resolution. If your model places it elsewhere, select the resolution control shown on the Display & Sound page.
- Choose a supported option and allow the picture to resync.
- Play the same content that showed the problem and check whether the symptom changes.
Why test 1080p when 4K is available?
Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends changing from 4K to 1080p when video-quality problems continue. A lower output can help isolate a bandwidth, compatibility or HDMI-handshake problem. It does not prove that the television or cable is defective, and it does not alter the resolution of the source stream itself.

- Real 8K HDMI certified cable: The HDMI cables pass HDMI 2.1 Certified. The HDMI Cable delivers 10K 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz higher resolution, 4 times higher than 4K@60Hz. The advanced technology makes a remarkable improvement in image clarity and sharpness
- 48Gbps ultra high speed: The HDMI 2.1 Cable with 48Gbps bandwidth delivers uncompressed 8K(7680 x 4320) video and high-speed transmission without signal loss. Make it faster 2.6X than HDMI 2.0(18Gbps). The 4K@240Hz HDMI cord also supports variable refresh rates and QFT to decrease “display latency”. Auto low latency mode and quick media switching for movies and video use the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode
- Dynamic HDR & eARC: This HDMI Cable features Dynamic HDR to let you capture more details with 12-bit color accuracy and get breathtakingly realistic pictures. The function of eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) directly delivers full-resolution audio, like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X from TV to soundbar/AV receiver. Also Support HDCP 2.3/2.2, Ethernet, 3D

- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
If 1080p works while 4K does not, inspect every part of the signal path before drawing a conclusion: the selected TV input, any receiver or soundbar between the streamer and TV, the HDMI cable and the streaming device. Once the fault is isolated, you can return to the highest mode that works reliably.
How to match content frame rate
Resolution describes the number of pixels in the output. Frame rate describes how often successive video frames are delivered. Match content frame rate addresses the second issue and is independent of the resolution setting.
- Go to All settings > Display & Sound.
- Select Match content frame rate.
- Enable the option if you want the device to match the source content’s frame rate when supported.
- Play the content again and watch for changes in motion cadence or the time the TV takes to switch modes.
Only supported content and equipment can use frame-rate matching. If the control is absent, the device or connected TV may not expose that capability in its current configuration.
How HDR format selection works
Automatic versus manual HDR selection
Under Advanced display settings > Format selection, Google TV can either let apps choose HDR formats automatically or let you select formats manually. Automatic selection is the normal starting point because it allows compatible apps and equipment to negotiate a format.

Manual selection is primarily useful for diagnosis. It lets you turn off available HDR formats and check whether HDR negotiation is responsible for an abnormal picture, a blank screen or another compatibility symptom.
Turn off HDR formats for a diagnostic test on Google TV Streamer (4K)
- Open Settings.
- Choose Display & Sound.
- Open Advanced display settings.
- Select Format selection.
- Choose Manual.
- Turn off the available HDR formats.
- Play the affected content again and compare the result.
This procedure is documented for Google TV Streamer (4K). Other devices may show different options or may not expose the same manual switches.
When non-HDR video looks too saturated
Google notes that HDR can be enabled automatically in some situations. If ordinary non-HDR video appears excessively saturated, turn on the content-matching option and test the same title again. Content matching and HDR format selection are separate controls, so check both rather than changing resolution alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen HDR does not appear to work
Some televisions require the HDMI input’s signal format to be set to an enhanced mode before HDR is accepted. The label differs by TV model, so inspect the television’s HDMI or input settings for the manufacturer’s equivalent of an enhanced signal mode. The setting must be applied to the particular HDMI input used by the streamer.

HDMI troubleshooting when the picture is wrong
Display negotiation happens across the complete HDMI chain. Troubleshooting only the streaming device can miss a limitation in the TV input, an intermediate receiver or soundbar, or the cable.
Use this order of checks
- Confirm the TV input. Make sure the television is displaying the HDMI input connected to the streaming device.
- Check intermediate equipment. If the streamer passes through a receiver or soundbar, temporarily account for that device when evaluating 4K or HDR behavior. Its HDMI capabilities and settings are part of the path.
- Inspect the cable connection. Reseat both ends and check that the cable is connected to the intended ports.
- Test a lower resolution. In Display & Sound > Resolution, try 1080p when 4K produces video-quality problems. A change in behavior is evidence of a compatibility or bandwidth issue to investigate, not proof of a failed component.
- Review TV-side HDMI mode. If HDR is missing, look for the TV maker’s enhanced HDMI signal option on that input.
- Use manual HDR selection as a test. On Google TV Streamer (4K), disable available HDR formats under Format selection > Manual, then retest the content.
Cable guidance for Google TV Streamer (4K)
Google recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable for Google TV Streamer (4K), particularly when the HDMI path includes 4K-capable equipment. This recommendation concerns the cable class; it does not guarantee that every television, receiver or soundbar will support every format.
Interpreting the results
| Test result | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p works but 4K does not | The higher-bandwidth mode may be exposing a limitation or handshake problem somewhere in the HDMI path. | Check the TV input, intermediate equipment, cable and TV-side HDMI mode. |
| HDR works only after enabling an enhanced HDMI mode | The TV input was not accepting the required signal format in its previous mode. | Leave the enhanced mode enabled for that input if it is compatible with the rest of your equipment. |
| Turning off HDR formats fixes the picture | HDR negotiation or a particular HDR format is implicated. | Keep the affected format disabled while checking the TV, cable and intermediate devices. |
| No change after resolution, HDR and cable checks | The limitation may be outside the tested setting, or the TV may expose its controls under a different menu. | Review the television manufacturer’s Picture, Display, HDMI and Input menus. |
Why an advanced option may be missing
- Different device type: The documented advanced menu applies to Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer. An integrated Google TV television may use the manufacturer’s menus.
- Different firmware: Menu labels and placement can change with device software.
- Connected-TV capability: Google TV shows options based partly on what the television and HDMI chain report as supported.
- Menu placement: A control may be directly under Display & Sound rather than under Advanced display settings.
Record the exact device model, TV model and HDMI arrangement before comparing instructions from another setup. Two products using the Google TV interface can legitimately show different controls.

You want smoother source-rate behavior
Enable Match content frame rate under Display & Sound when your device and TV support it. Evaluate it with the content you actually watch because the option affects source-rate matching, not pixel resolution.
You are gaming from the streaming device
Open Advanced display settings and enable Allow game mode when the option is available. Google describes game mode as reducing latency and improving game response; the TV may also have its own gaming or low-latency setting.
You need to isolate an HDR problem
First check the TV input’s enhanced HDMI mode. Then, on Google TV Streamer (4K), use Format selection > Manual and disable HDR formats for a controlled comparison. If the picture normalizes, re-enable formats one at a time only if the interface permits that level of selection and the TV path supports them.

Limits to keep in mind
Google TV is an interface shared across different products, not a guarantee of one universal display menu. Available resolutions, HDR formats, frame-rate behavior and advanced controls vary by model, firmware and connected-TV capabilities. The labels in this guide are the documented labels for Google’s streaming devices; a built-in Google TV television may use different wording and may expose its controls only through the TV maker’s menus.
