How to Find and Catch New Pokémon in Pokémon GO Events

Open Pokémon GO’s event calendar first: from Map View, tap the calendar icon in the lower-right corner, choose the event, and read its duration, bonuses, and Learn More announcement. The announcement tells you exactly how each featured Pokémon is obtained—such as a wild encounter, Field Research, Special or Timed Research, a Collection Challenge, a raid or Max Battle, an Egg, a Route, or GO Snapshot. Follow that listed route during its eligibility window; an event listing does not mean the Pokémon is available through every method.

Start with the in-game event calendar

The calendar is the reliable starting point because event species, encounter methods, hours, bonuses, and ticket rules change from one event to the next. Pokémon GO’s Help Center describes it as the place where Trainers can view current and upcoming events.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open Pokémon GO and go to Map View.
  2. Tap the calendar icon in the lower-right area of the screen.
  3. Select the current or upcoming event that interests you.
  4. Read the displayed start and end times, duration, and bonuses.
  5. Tap Learn More to open the event’s official announcement.

Do this before travelling to a location, buying a ticket, incubating Eggs, or arranging a group battle. The calendar identifies the event window, while the linked announcement supplies the encounter rules. If the calendar and an old social post disagree, use the current in-game listing and its linked official details.

Read the event announcement as an encounter map

Find the section that names the Pokémon you want and record the method beside it. Official event pages commonly separate encounters into several categories. A species listed under one category is not automatically available under another.

Encounter route What you must do What to verify
Wild encounters Play and explore during the stated event hours and conditions. Event hours, location limits, weather or habitat wording, and whether the species is listed as a wild spawn.
Event Field Research Spin Photo Discs at eligible PokéStops or Gyms, complete the assigned task, and claim the reward. Which task gives the encounter, whether tasks are event-only, and when they expire.
Special Research Work through the story-driven steps and claim the encounter at the specified stage. Ticket ownership, unlock time, purchase deadline, and whether the story remains available after the event.
Timed Research Finish the listed objectives before the countdown or event deadline. The exact expiration time; unclaimed or incomplete timed tasks can be lost when the timer ends.
Collection Challenge Register every required Pokémon, usually by catching or evolving the listed species, then claim the completion reward. The collection list, completion deadline, and whether the featured Pokémon is a reward rather than a required catch.
Raids or Max Battles Join the specified battle, defeat the boss, and proceed to the resulting encounter screen. Battle type, boss, pass or ticket requirement, local or remote eligibility, and any form or move limitation.
Eggs Receive the qualifying Egg during the stated period, place it in an incubator, and walk the required distance. Whether the Egg must be obtained during the event and which Egg pool applies; hatching later may still follow the published Egg rule.
Routes Follow an eligible Route during the event’s stated conditions. Whether the route encounter is available globally or only in a specified area and time window.
GO Snapshot Take the required in-game snapshot of a Pokémon. How many snapshots are required, which Pokémon qualify, and the claim procedure for the encounter.

Copy the announcement’s wording into your own checklist. “Featured,” “appearing,” “available from,” and “may encounter” can describe different levels of access. A Pokémon can be a guaranteed reward for a completed task, a chance-based wild appearance, or a battle reward with its own eligibility conditions.

Choose the correct route for the Pokémon

Wild encounters

If the announcement places the species in the wild, play during the published event period and explore where the event’s conditions apply. Keep the game open while moving through the eligible area, and check the Nearby tracker or the map for appearances. Do not assume a wild listing means continuous availability: some events limit the species to particular hours, habitats, locations, or bonuses.

When the Pokémon appears, tap it to enter the encounter, select an available Poké Ball, and complete the catch attempt. The event announcement may separately identify a form, costume, move, or shiny possibility; treat those as separate conditions rather than assuming every wild encounter has them.

Event Field Research

Field Research comes from spinning Photo Discs at PokéStops and Gyms. Event pages identify which tasks award the featured Pokémon. A task is not an encounter until you complete its stated objective and claim the reward.

  1. Spin a Photo Disc at a PokéStop or Gym while the event task is available.
  2. Read the task text and confirm that its reward belongs to the event’s featured pool.
  3. Complete the exact objective; progress on a different task does not substitute for it.
  4. Open the task and tap the reward to trigger the encounter.
  5. Catch the Pokémon before discarding the task or allowing any event-specific deadline to pass.

Keep free Research slots if you plan to collect several event tasks. If a page says a task is event-only, do not expect an ordinary version of the same task to provide the same reward.

Special Research and Timed Research

Special Research is presented as a story-driven series of activities. Timed Research uses a deadline. The event page should tell you whether the research is free, ticketed, or unlocked by another action and should identify the reward step.

For Special Research, start the story as soon as it becomes available and note any purchase or unlock cutoff. For Timed Research, write down the precise expiration shown in the game or announcement and schedule the final objectives before that time. A reward that is visible but not claimed is not the same as an encounter you have completed.

Collection Challenges

A Collection Challenge can involve catching, evolving, or otherwise registering a defined list. Read the entire list before you begin: the new Pokémon may be one of the required entries, the completion reward, or both. The challenge’s completion deadline is separate from the broader event end if the announcement gives one, so claim the reward immediately after the final entry registers.

Raids and Max Battles

When a Pokémon is listed in raids or Max Battles, the battle is the gate to the encounter. Check whether the event uses ordinary raids, a Max Battle, or a specific tier, then confirm pass, ticket, group, and location requirements.

  1. Find the listed boss in the nearby raid or Max Battle view during the eligible period.
  2. Confirm that you have the required pass, ticket, or access condition.
  3. Join with enough players and defeat the boss before the battle timer ends.
  4. Use the post-battle encounter screen to attempt the catch.

Winning creates an encounter opportunity; it does not establish a universal catch guarantee. An event can also limit a featured form or move to a particular battle window, so read that section instead of relying on a general raid rotation.

Eggs

Egg availability has two separate moments: receiving the Egg and hatching it. If the announcement says the Egg must be obtained during the event, an Egg received outside that window does not qualify merely because you hatch it during the event. Record the Egg distance, pool, and receipt window, then incubate and walk as required. The announcement’s wording controls whether a later hatch remains eligible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Routes and GO Snapshot

Routes can add an event encounter while you follow a mapped path. Confirm whether the event requires a specific Route, a local area, or a particular time. Follow the route in the game and complete any stated interaction; simply walking anywhere may not satisfy the requirement.

For GO Snapshot encounters, use the in-game camera and take the number of snapshots specified by the event. The announcement may require a particular Pokémon as the subject. After taking the snapshot, return to the event task or research page and claim the encounter if the game presents it.

Check eligibility before you spend time or money

Three constraints commonly determine whether you can obtain a featured Pokémon.

  • Time: event start and end times, raid windows, hourly bonuses, and Timed Research deadlines can differ. Use the local time displayed by the game and announcement.
  • Ticket: some encounters or research stories require a ticket. Buying a ticket does not automatically guarantee every featured Pokémon or a shiny encounter.
  • Location: a page may limit a Route, in-person activity, or local event feature to a specified area. Do not infer global access from a headline that names the species.

The 2024 Wild Area material illustrates why historical rules must not be reused as permanent advice: that event described special GO Safari Balls disappearing at a stated local time. The rule belonged to that event. Always read the current announcement for the event you are playing.

Compare routes before deciding how to play

If the same Pokémon appears through several methods, choose according to your access, schedule, and tolerance for chance. The table below is a decision aid; the official event page remains authoritative for the actual species and conditions.

Priority Usually the most suitable route Trade-off to check
Free access Wild encounters, free Field Research, or an un ticketed challenge when listed. Availability can be chance-based, and tasks require eligible PokéStops or Gyms.
Predictable reward A research step or completed Collection Challenge that explicitly lists the Pokémon as its reward. You must finish every stated objective before the deadline.
Short play window A wild spawn or a nearby battle during the event hours. The encounter may disappear when the window closes.
Walking-focused play Eggs or Routes, if the event lists the species there. Egg receipt rules, distance, and local Route availability can limit access.
Group play Raids or Max Battles. You need the right pass, enough players, and the event’s eligible battle period.
Photo-based play GO Snapshot, when specified. The required subject and number of snapshots must match the event instructions.

There is no universal “best” method. A guaranteed research reward may be preferable to a chance-based wild encounter for one player, while a free wild appearance may be preferable to a ticketed story for another.

A complete event-day workflow

  1. Open the calendar. Confirm the event name, local start and end times, and whether it is active now.
  2. Open Learn More. Use the official announcement rather than a summary post as your rulebook.
  3. Search for the target species. Note every listed route separately: wild, research, challenge, raid, Max Battle, Egg, Route, or snapshot.
  4. Mark restrictions. Record ticket status, geographic limits, battle-pass needs, Egg receipt requirements, and all deadlines.
  5. Prepare your account. Leave Research space, carry the stated passes, and make room for Eggs if hatching is part of the plan.
  6. Play the matching activity. Explore for wild spawns, spin discs for Field Research, complete the specified story or timer, finish the Collection Challenge, battle the listed boss, hatch the qualifying Egg, follow the Route, or take the required snapshot.
  7. Claim rewards immediately. Open completed tasks and challenges while the event instructions are still visible, then complete the encounter.
  8. Check the Pokédex entry. Confirm that the new species, form, costume, or move registered as intended.

What to do when the Pokémon does not appear

The event is visible, but the species is missing

Reopen the announcement and verify the route. A species listed for Field Research will not necessarily spawn in the wild, and a raid boss will not appear as a map encounter. Then check the event clock, location wording, and ticket requirement.

The task does not award the expected encounter

Read the task’s reward preview and compare it with the event page. You may have collected a normal task rather than the event version, or the species may be a reward for a different step or challenge. Keep the task until you can confirm its route instead of deleting it on assumption.

The research timer is nearly finished

Prioritize objectives that unlock the encounter and claim every completed page before the displayed deadline. Timed Research is not interchangeable with Special Research: finishing a story later does not necessarily preserve an expired timer.

The battle ended but no encounter started

Check whether the battle was the specified type and whether the boss matched the event listing. Review your passes and ticket status, then reopen the raid or Max Battle result screen. If the event page limits the encounter to a particular form or period, a different battle may not qualify.

Rank #4
Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2

  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

The Egg does not contain the featured Pokémon

Verify when the Egg was received, not only when it was hatched. Compare its distance and pool with the announcement. A hatch during event hours does not override a published requirement that the Egg be obtained during the event.

Shiny, form, move, and catch expectations

Event announcements may state that a Pokémon can be shiny or that shiny odds are increased, but those statements are event-specific. Do not turn “can be shiny” into a guarantee, and do not quote an odds percentage unless the current official details provide one. A 2024 Wild Area example explicitly warned that buying a ticket did not guarantee shiny encounters; that warning demonstrates the distinction between access and outcome, not a rule for every future event.

Likewise, a debut may involve a particular form, costume, or event move. Confirm which route grants that exact version. Catching the species through another route may not provide the same form or move.

Once an encounter begins, use the available Poké Balls and normal catch controls shown by the game. A successful battle, research claim, or hatch creates the encounter; it does not remove the ordinary need to complete the catch attempt.

After the event ends

Do not announce that a Pokémon is permanently unavailable solely because its event ended. Reopen the current calendar and official announcements to see whether the species has another active route, such as a later event, research reward, raid rotation, Egg pool, or other in-game feature. There is no universal post-event rule established for every debut, so describe only the route the current information confirms.

Keep any unhatched Egg or unfinished Special Research only when the event’s published terms say it remains eligible. Timed Research and time-limited bonuses should be treated as expired when their stated deadlines pass.

Optional accessory: what a Poké Ball Plus does—and does not do

The Pokémon Company International describes the Poké Ball Plus as a portable device that lets you enjoy Pokémon GO without looking at your smartphone. It is optional for event play. The description does not establish that it unlocks debut species, grants event-only encounters, or improves catch odds, so it should not be treated as a requirement for finding new Pokémon.
