The quickest way to stop a forgotten subscription is to identify who bills you, then cancel it in that company’s billing system. An app installed on your phone may be billed by Apple, Google Play, the app developer, a streaming provider, or another company. On iPhone, check your Apple Account’s Subscriptions list; on Android, check Google Play’s Subscriptions list. If the charge is missing, use receipts, family accounts, Google Wallet, and your bank statement to locate the real biller.
Start with the billing route, not the phone
Your phone’s app list is not a list of every recurring charge attached to the device. It only shows software installed locally. Subscription control follows the account and payment route used at sign-up.

Deleting the app does not cancel recurring billing. You must complete the cancellation in the billing account and verify the resulting status.

Record the charge before changing anything
Write down the merchant descriptor exactly as it appears on your bank or card statement, along with the amount, currency, transaction date and payment method. Also note any renewal date shown in an email or account page. These details help you distinguish two subscriptions with similar names and give the biller enough information to find the transaction if you need support.

Find and cancel an Apple-billed subscription on iPhone
These steps apply when Apple charged your payment method. They are the normal path in current iOS versions, although labels and cancellation rules can vary in some countries and regions.
Use the iPhone Settings app
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen to open your Apple Account.
- Tap Subscriptions. The page lists active, expired, and canceled subscriptions associated with that Apple Account.
- Tap the subscription you want to stop.
- Tap Cancel Subscription, then follow the confirmation prompts.
After cancellation, reopen the subscription’s details and check its status. If there is no Cancel button, or the page shows an expiration message in red, Apple says the subscription is already canceled. Save the confirmation screen or email for your records. An expired or canceled item can remain visible in the list, so its presence alone does not mean another payment is scheduled.
Cancel without the original iPhone
You can sign in to Apple’s account website with the Apple Account used for the purchase and manage subscriptions there. This is useful if the phone was lost, replaced, or is no longer available. The key requirement is still the correct Apple Account; signing in with a different account will not reveal the subscription.

If you started a trial through Apple and do not want a paid renewal, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Waiting until the final hours can leave the renewal inside the billing window. Cancellation normally stops the next charge while preserving any access Apple has already granted for the trial or paid period.
Regional exceptions
Apple notes that cancellation details can differ in Germany, Israel, South Africa, and Türkiye. If the standard Subscriptions screen does not match your account, follow the current regional instructions shown by Apple for your country rather than assuming the subscription is gone.
If an Apple charge is not in Subscriptions
Do not keep retrying the same account. Search for an Apple receipt or invoice, then check other Apple Accounts and family members’ accounts. If no Apple receipt exists, Apple says you might have bought the subscription from another company. Use the statement descriptor to identify that company and cancel through its account page or support team.

Use these steps when Google Play processed the payment. The Google Account selected in Play must be the one used when subscribing.

Cancel in the Google Play app
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription.
- Tap Cancel subscription and complete the prompts. Google may ask you to choose a reason before confirming.
Return to the subscription page and check that it now shows an end date or canceled status. Keep the confirmation email or take a screenshot. If you use several Google Accounts, tap the profile picture again and inspect each account rather than assuming the first account is the billing account.
Use Android account settings
On many Android phones, you can reach the same list through Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account > Payments & subscriptions > Manage subscriptions. The exact Settings layout can vary by manufacturer and Android version, so the Google Play route is usually easier to recognize.
Cancel on the web
Google also provides a subscription-management page accessible from a browser. Sign in with the Google Account that received the purchase receipt, select the subscription, choose Cancel subscription, and follow the instructions. If the list is empty, switch accounts before concluding that no subscription exists.
Uninstalling is not cancellation
Removing an app only removes its files from the phone. Google explicitly states that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. A recurring charge can continue until you cancel through Google Play or the provider that billed you.

A blank list is a clue about the account or billing route, not proof that the charge stopped. Work through the checks below in order.
1. Confirm the account currently signed in
Check the Apple Account name in Settings or the Google Account shown by your Play profile picture. If you have more than one account, sign in to each one and inspect its subscription list. A work account, an old personal account, or an account created after changing phones can hold the subscription.
2. Search for the original receipt
Search every relevant email inbox for the service name, an invoice number, or a payment amount. Apple recommends searching for phrases such as receipt from Apple or invoice from Apple. Google recommends checking other email addresses for the Play receipt. The receipt normally identifies the account and the entity that charged you. Search archived, spam and promotional folders if your mail service separates them.

3. Check family accounts
A family member may have started the subscription under their own account while your card or shared payment method was used. Apple says the account holder who started the subscription must cancel it. Check the organizer’s account and other family members’ accounts rather than repeatedly searching your own.

Google lists Google Wallet as another place to investigate a missing subscription or payment. Look for the merchant name, transaction date, and payment method, then use that information to locate the matching Google Account or provider.
5. Read the bank or card statement carefully
Find the exact merchant descriptor, amount, currency, and charge date. The descriptor may differ from the app’s public name, but it tells you whether Apple, Google, the developer, or another payment company is responsible. If there is no Apple receipt for a charge, Apple advises contacting the company shown as the biller.
6. Consider direct or alternative billing
Some services take payment on their own website or through an alternative billing system. Google says alternative-billed subscriptions do not appear in the Play subscription center. Sign in to the service’s website, open its account, billing, or membership page, and cancel there. If you cannot identify the account, use the receipt or statement descriptor when contacting the provider.
How to identify the company charging you
Use several clues together; a familiar app icon alone is not enough.
- Statement descriptor: Record the exact merchant text, amount, currency, and date.
- Email receipt: Note the account address, order or invoice number, and renewal date.
- Store receipt: Apple receipts point to the Apple Account used; Google receipts identify the Google Play purchase and account.
- Account page: Look for Billing, Membership, Plan, Manage plan, or Recurring payment settings after signing in to the provider.
- Family payment records: Ask the family member who manages the shared payment method to search their account.
Do not assume that a card charge with a service’s brand name was processed by the app store. Direct billing can use the provider’s legal or payment-processor name instead. If the descriptor is unfamiliar, compare the amount and date with receipts before disputing the transaction; a payment dispute does not substitute for canceling the underlying subscription.
What cancellation changes—and what it does not
Access usually continues until the paid period ends
Cancellation generally prevents the next renewal; it does not usually remove paid access immediately. Google says a canceled subscription remains usable for the time already paid. The subscription page should show the date access ends or the date the next charge was prevented. Continued access after cancellation is therefore not proof that cancellation failed.

Cancellation is different from a refund
Stopping renewal does not automatically reverse a charge that already posted. Refund eligibility depends on the platform, timing, purchase circumstances, and applicable policy. Submit a separate refund request through Apple, Google, or the provider that billed you; do not treat a cancellation confirmation as a refund approval.
Trials need an early deadline
For an Apple trial, cancel at least 24 hours before the advertised trial end. Other providers may set different deadlines, so read the trial terms and the receipt’s renewal date.
Save proof
Keep the cancellation email, a screenshot showing the expiration date, or a downloaded invoice. Record the date, account, and subscription name. This evidence helps if a renewal appears after you canceled and gives the provider a precise transaction to investigate.
If another charge appears
First compare the new charge with the account’s displayed expiration date and the time you canceled. Confirm that you canceled the account that was actually billed, not a duplicate subscription under another account or provider. Then contact the biller with the transaction date, amount, account email and cancellation evidence. Ask separately about refund eligibility; cancellation by itself does not guarantee money back.

How to prevent forgotten renewals
- Keep Apple and Google purchase receipts in a dedicated email folder.
- Review the Subscriptions page on each account whenever you change phones or payment cards.
- Set a calendar reminder several days before a trial or annual plan renews.
- Use a consistent note with the service name, billing route, renewal date, and account email.
- When canceling, remove saved payment details from a provider’s account only after confirming that cancellation is complete; deleting a card alone may not end the subscription.
These habits do not replace checking the biller, but they make an unfamiliar charge easier to trace before another renewal occurs.
