Some accept individual project submissions; others require a team, school chapter, approved host, or nomination through an affiliated science fair. Start with official directories to find options, then confirm eligibility, entry route, materials, deadlines, and costs on each organizer’s current rules page.
How to find competitions that fit
Begin with a national K–12 listing such as ORISE’s student competition directory. You can also browse the DoW STEM opportunities catalog and Society for Science’s competition and fair resources. Then search closer to home: state and regional science fairs, university events, school or district fairs, robotics leagues, and chapter-based programs may be the required first step.

Direct applications
Some programs let eligible students submit their own projects. For the 2027 National STEM Festival, applicants ordinarily must live in one of 56 U.S. Competition Regions; U.S. citizenship is not required. The application guide says a home-educated student may be eligible and that region is based on the student’s usual home address, not school location. Read the current eligibility rules and privacy notice before starting.

Fair nominations and host requirements
The Junior Innovators Challenge is not a direct-entry substitute for a local fair: students first compete at a Society-affiliated fair, where eligible competitors may be nominated. If a program requires a registered chapter, school team, or approved host, contact that organization early to learn how students can participate. The Army Educational Outreach Program’s Junior Solar Sprint, for example, uses a registered TSA chapter or approved Army host site.

Team, age, and location details
Do not assume that a competition is open to every student in its grade range. Check age cutoffs, geography, team size, and school affiliation together. The 2027 National STEM Festival is an individual submission, while STEM4ALL’s Fall Cohort permits teams of up to three; those rules cannot be transferred to other programs.

Can you use a project you already have?
Often, an existing school, science-fair, class, research-program, internship, or extracurricular project may be a starting point, provided the competition accepts that kind of work and the student’s own contribution is clear. The National STEM Festival’s guidance allows varied approaches—including research, engineering, experimentation, invention, data, software, prototypes, and systems—and emphasizes that the entry should represent the student’s thinking and work. Match the project to the competition’s prompt rather than submitting the same materials unchanged.
For that Festival, applicants choose the theme that best matches the project’s main purpose. Other competitions may impose different topic, format, originality, or project-integrity rules, so read their current instructions before adapting work.

Prepare the application materials
Start from the organizer’s checklist and note every required format. The examples show why a generic “science fair application” checklist is not enough:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- National STEM Festival: written project responses, a project PDF, and a project video, as specified in its 2027 application guide.
- STEM4ALL: an abstract, project poster, and short presentation video for the Fall Cohort described on its page. The page calls for a poster, but does not establish that a physical tri-fold display board is required.
Follow each program’s listed limits for file type, page or word count, video length, anonymization, and permissions. If a physical fair requests a display board, use its own dimensions and presentation rules; do not assume the requirements of one event apply elsewhere.

A practical application workflow
- Make a student profile. Record current grade, age on relevant dates, state or usual home region, interests, project status, and preference for individual or team work.
- Find candidates from official sources. Use national directories, then add local school, fair, university, chapter, and state listings. Save the organizer’s own page for each program.
- Verify eligibility and the qualifying route. Confirm grade, age, geography, team rules, and any fair nomination, teacher, chapter, or host-site requirement before investing time in an application.
- Read the rules and calendar. Check judging information, privacy and consent terms, project-integrity guidance, and the current deadline. Distinguish registration, submission, finalist, and event dates, and record the stated time zone.
- Map the project to the prompt. Confirm that the project is eligible, the student’s contribution is evident, and each requested file meets format and content limits.
- Build in a buffer. Allow time for adult permissions, team coordination, qualification through a fair, file conversion, video permissions, uploads, and connection problems. The National STEM Festival FAQ says its application cannot be saved and resumed, so prepare the required materials before beginning that application.
- Submit and keep a record. Use the organizer’s official portal, save the confirmation, and retain copies of the final files. Note any later interview, travel, or public presentation commitment stated in the rules.
Plan for what happens after submission
Check whether selection leads to a virtual showcase, local event, finalist stage, or in-person presentation, and distinguish those outcomes in the rules. For the 2027 National STEM Festival, a selected Champion role entails a public presentation in Washington, DC, October 19–24, 2027; that commitment is distinct from finalist status. Do not assume that every applicant or finalist must travel.
Dates in the examples are tied to specific cycles. Revisit the official page before applying in a later year, especially when a page lists a completed or future cycle. A directory listing is a starting point, not confirmation that an application window is open.
