To find someone in WhatsApp, open the Chats view and search for the saved name, then open the conversation or contact details. To add a person, use New chat > New contact, save a number from an existing chat, or add it from a group. To remove someone, open the contact details and choose the delete-contact action. Deleting the contact does not delete your existing chat history; deleting the conversation is a separate step.
The exact labels differ between Android and iPhone. Your result also depends on whether the number is stored only inside WhatsApp or synchronized with your phone’s Contacts app, and on the contact permissions you have granted.

Before you change anything: where the contact is stored
WhatsApp can work with contacts in two ways, depending on the feature and rollout available to your account:

Knowing the storage location prevents several common mistakes. A name saved only in WhatsApp will not necessarily be available to your other phone apps. Conversely, a person saved in the phone address book can remain invisible to WhatsApp if the app has no permission to read that address book or has only partial access. Decide where you want to maintain the record before creating duplicates.
If a person is missing, permission settings are usually the first thing to check. On iPhone, WhatsApp may have full, no, or selected (partial) access to Contacts. On Android, WhatsApp needs the Contacts permission enabled in the system settings.
How to find a contact you already added
Search from the Chats screen
- Open WhatsApp and go to Chats.
- Use the search field or search icon and type the person’s saved name, or another distinctive part of the conversation.
- Select the matching chat to message the person.
Search can also help when you remember a word from the conversation but not the exact contact name. If several results appear, compare the profile photo, displayed number, and recent message before opening the chat. A result may be a group, a broadcast-related item, or another conversation rather than the individual you intended.
If you need to inspect or change the record rather than send a message, open the conversation and tap the person’s name or number at the top. That contact-details screen contains the edit and delete actions available for the record. From the same screen, you can verify the full telephone number and determine whether you are looking at a saved contact or an unsaved participant.
When the search shows a number instead of a name
A number usually means WhatsApp can see the conversation but not the corresponding name in the contact source it is using. Check whether the number was saved with the correct country code, then review Contacts permission and the storage choice described below. A contact saved only in WhatsApp will not necessarily appear in the phone’s Contacts app, and a phone contact that WhatsApp cannot access will not be named in the app.
Try searching a distinctive sequence of digits if the name search fails. Open the result and compare the number with the address-book entry. If the number changed, edit the existing record instead of creating another person with nearly the same name. Duplicate entries can make the contact picker look inconsistent and can cause you to message the wrong account.
Finding someone from a group
Open the group conversation, then tap the participant’s name or profile. The profile identifies the number associated with that participant and provides the add or save action when the person is not already in your contacts. This is useful when a group contains several people with similar names or when you never had a one-to-one chat with the person.
How to add a contact on Android
Create a new contact from Chats
- Open WhatsApp and select Chats.
- Tap New chat (the message icon).
- Choose New contact.
- Enter the person’s name and complete phone number, including the international country code when the person is in another country.
- Save the record. If WhatsApp offers a storage choice, select WhatsApp-only storage or synchronization with the phone, according to where you want to manage the contact.
Entering the country code is especially important when the person is abroad or when your phone’s default region differs from the number’s region. Do not add a second copy simply because the first one does not appear immediately; first check the digits and permissions.

Return to New chat and search the saved name. If it does not appear immediately, close and reopen the contact picker or refresh the list if your version shows a refresh command. Searching again from the Chats screen is another way to make sure you are viewing the current list.
Save a number from an existing chat
- Open the chat with the unsaved number.
- Tap the number or profile area at the top of the conversation.
- Choose Add (the wording can vary slightly by version).
- Select the option to create a new contact or add the number to an existing contact, then save.
Choose “add to existing contact” when the number belongs to someone already in your address book. This keeps one person record with multiple numbers instead of creating a duplicate. If WhatsApp offers a choice of storage, make the same deliberate selection you would make when creating a contact from the Chats screen.
Add someone from a group
Open the group and select the participant’s name or profile. Use the contact-saving option shown on that profile or in the group-information screen, then create a new record or add the number to an existing one. You do not need to leave the group to save the participant.
Group participants can have privacy settings that limit what profile information you see. You still need the correct telephone number to create a useful contact record. Confirm the number before saving if the group contains international participants.
How to add a contact on iPhone
Create a contact from WhatsApp
- Open WhatsApp and go to Chats.
- Tap New chat, then choose New contact (the exact placement can change with an app update).
- Enter the name and full telephone number, including the country code where appropriate.
- When prompted, choose whether to synchronize the contact with the iPhone’s Contacts app or keep it in WhatsApp if that option is offered.
- Save, then search for the name from the Chats screen.
Choosing phone synchronization means the record is managed through the iPhone address book as well as WhatsApp. Choosing WhatsApp-only storage, where available, means it may not be visible in the iPhone’s Contacts app. If you later want the record available to other apps, edit or recreate it in the phone’s Contacts app, or change the storage choice if WhatsApp provides that control.
Save a number from a chat or group
- Open the conversation containing the unsaved number, or open the group and tap the participant’s profile.
- Choose the add or create-contact action.
- Select whether to create a new person or add the number to an existing contact.
- Choose whether to synchronize the record with the phone when WhatsApp asks, then save.
If the participant is in a group, the same contact-saving control may be available from the group-information page. Menu names can differ between iOS releases and WhatsApp versions.
What partial iPhone access means during setup
If WhatsApp has selected or partial Contacts access, iPhone may ask you to approve individual people. A contact created in the phone’s Contacts app can therefore exist but remain unavailable to WhatsApp until that person is included in the approved selection. Full access allows WhatsApp to use the address-book contacts available to the app; no access prevents it from reading those names.

How to edit a WhatsApp contact
- Find the person in Chats and open the conversation.
- Tap the person’s name or number to open contact details.
- Choose Edit.
- Change the name, number, or other available fields and save.
For a synchronized record, editing from the phone’s Contacts app may be the more reliable choice because that address-book entry is the source shared with other apps. For a WhatsApp-only record, use the edit control inside WhatsApp when it is available.

After changing a number, check the conversation header and search result. The existing chat history is associated with the conversation, not erased simply because you corrected the contact name or number. If the new number belongs to a different WhatsApp account, verify the profile before starting a sensitive conversation.
How to remove a contact without deleting the chat
Delete the contact record
- Open the person’s chat from Chats.
- Tap the person’s name or number at the top to open contact details.
- Choose Edit, then the delete-contact action, or use the delete option shown directly in the details screen.
- Confirm the deletion in the phone or WhatsApp prompt.
Afterward, the conversation can remain in your Chats list. WhatsApp’s contact deletion action removes the address-book record; it does not erase the messages already stored in that chat. The header may now show the telephone number instead of the former name.
Delete the conversation separately
If you also want the message thread gone, return to the Chats list and use the chat’s delete command. This is independent of deleting the contact. Removing the chat does not recreate or delete the person’s address-book entry. Confirm that you selected the intended conversation, especially when several chats have similar names.
Understand the effect of synchronized contacts
When the contact is synchronized with the phone, deleting it from the phone’s Contacts app can affect every app and device using that address book. Apple explains that deleting an iPhone contact belonging to an email account can remove it from other devices signed in to that account. Check which account owns the contact before confirming deletion if you need to preserve it elsewhere.
A WhatsApp-only record has a narrower scope, but the exact controls depend on the feature available to your account. If you cannot find a delete control in WhatsApp, open the contact details and check whether the record is actually stored in the phone address book. Delete it from the source where it was created, then return to WhatsApp and search again.
Why your contacts are not showing in WhatsApp
On Android: allow Contacts permission
- Open the Android Settings app.
- Go to Apps (or Apps & notifications on some versions).
- Select WhatsApp.
- Tap Permissions, then Contacts.
- Choose Allow.
Reopen WhatsApp and search again. If the permission was denied, WhatsApp may show a number without the saved name or may omit the person from its contact picker. Android manufacturers can rename or rearrange these settings, so use the Settings search field for “WhatsApp permissions” or “Contacts” if the listed path is different.
On iPhone: check the level of Contacts access
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Find WhatsApp in the app list, then tap Contacts, or open Privacy & Security > Contacts > WhatsApp, depending on iOS version.
- Review the access setting:
- Full access: WhatsApp can use the address-book contacts available to the app.
- No access: WhatsApp cannot read those names, so saved people may not appear as contacts.
- Selected or partial access: WhatsApp can use only the contacts you approved.
With partial access, a newly added phone contact may stay invisible until you grant WhatsApp access to that specific person or switch to full access. After changing the setting, return to WhatsApp and search from Chats again. Review the selected list whenever one particular person is missing while others appear normally.

Save the number in international format when needed. A missing country code, an extra digit, or a duplicate entry can make the result appear under a different name or prevent the expected match. Open the chat’s profile to compare the displayed number with the record in Contacts. Remove spaces or punctuation only if your phone’s contact editor has stored the number incorrectly; WhatsApp generally handles ordinary formatting automatically.

Confirm where the contact was saved
If you selected WhatsApp-only storage, look for the person inside WhatsApp rather than in the phone’s address book. If you saved to the phone, verify that the address-book account is enabled and that WhatsApp has permission to read it. A contact can exist in one location while being absent from the other.
Refresh the view after a change
After granting permission or saving a new record, leave the contact picker and open it again. Searching from the Chats screen forces you to check the current list rather than an earlier view that may still be open. If the number still appears without a name, close and reopen WhatsApp after confirming the permission and exact number.

WhatsApp says contact upload and address-book synchronization help it identify which people in your address book use WhatsApp and update the contact list when someone later joins. This explains why granting Contacts access can change which names and WhatsApp accounts you see. It does not mean every phone contact will necessarily appear as a WhatsApp user: the person must have an account associated with that number, and your permission and storage settings still apply.

Contact upload is therefore a discovery and list-maintenance function, not a guarantee that a person will respond or that profile details will be visible. A contact can be correctly saved and still not appear as a WhatsApp user if that telephone number is not registered to an account.
Choosing the right action for common situations

Important limits and safety checks
- Do not confuse contact deletion with blocking. Removing a record does not itself block messages or calls from that number. Blocking is a separate privacy control in the contact or chat options.
- Verify the account before deleting. A synchronized contact may belong to an email or cloud account and disappear from other signed-in devices when deleted.
- Expect interface variation. WhatsApp and iOS/Android updates can move New chat, Add, Edit, and delete controls. Use the person’s profile or contact-details screen when a label is not exactly where an older guide shows it.
- Linked devices may display the same contact differently. WhatsApp’s described contact-storage system can manage contacts across linked devices, but the feature’s availability and behavior can vary by account, platform, and rollout.
- Check before creating duplicates. Compare the full number and existing names before saving a new record. One person with two entries can make searches, edits, and deletion harder to follow.
- Protect shared address books. If a contact is synchronized with a work, school, iCloud, or mail account, deletion can affect other apps and signed-in devices. Confirm the owning account first.
