How to Find a Weight-Inclusive Doctor or Dietitian

To find a weight-inclusive doctor or dietitian, use directories and search terms to build a shortlist, then verify credentials, availability, costs and care approach directly with each practice. Labels such as “weight-neutral,” “HAES,” “anti-diet” and “fat-friendly” can help you find leads, but none guarantees that a clinician’s expertise or appointment style will suit you.

Start with several search terms

Try “weight-inclusive,” “weight-neutral,” “HAES,” “anti-diet” and “fat-friendly” alongside your location and the kind of care you need. For example, search for “weight-neutral dietitian in [city]” or “weight-inclusive primary care [state].” A clinician may describe relevant practices without using any of these labels, so also search by specialty, such as cardiology, gynecology or eating-disorder care.

These phrases also appear in patient discussions—for example, people may ask for “weight-inclusive, fat friendly doctors that use HAES approach.” Treat that wording as a way to find possible providers, not evidence that a particular clinician is qualified or a good fit.

Use directories to build a shortlist

Weight-inclusive provider directories

In Australia, Size Inclusive Health Australia’s Verified Provider Directory can be searched by state, profession, services or name. The directory says its verified providers offer care from a weight-neutral framework consistent with Health at Every Size principles, and it publishes provider criteria. Those criteria include the principle that people of all sizes are entitled to quality medical treatment without judgment, and that no particular body size, weight or BMI range should be treated as normal or right for everyone. The directory is Australia-specific; check that any listing is current, and remember that an organization’s criteria cannot guarantee your experience in an individual appointment.

Nutrition-provider directories in the United States

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Find a Nutrition Expert directory lists registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered (NDTRs). Its search and filters include location, specialty, language, insurance and payment options. Use them to identify candidates, then confirm the clinician’s approach and your coverage directly.

Eating-disorder care

If you need eating-disorder expertise or coordinated care, NEDA’s Treatment Directory includes dietitians, medical doctors, psychiatrists, therapists and treatment centers, with location and virtual-search options. NEDA identifies two nationwide virtual providers in the directory as sponsors. Consider that disclosure as you assess results; a directory listing is a lead, not an endorsement or a guarantee of fit.

Local, insurance and community leads

Your insurer’s directory may help identify clinicians who appear to be in network. Professional associations and jurisdictional directories can help you find providers or check credentials and licensing. A current clinician, therapist or trusted local organization may also have relevant recommendations. HAES Health Sheets offers self-advocacy cards, friendly-practitioner resources and further reading through its resources page. Treat recommendations and crowd-sourced lists as starting points, not endorsements.

Screen candidates before booking

Read each provider’s bio and practice pages for details on assessment, treatment goals, weight discussions and experience with your specific concern. Look for information relevant to your access needs, too. A promising label alone does not show how the clinician handles your situation.

Contact the office before scheduling and ask about practical requirements:

  • Is the clinician accepting patients, and do they serve your location?
  • Are telehealth appointments available where you live?
  • Do you need a referral, and are there other prerequisites?
  • Does the practice accept your insurance, and what fees or payment options apply?
  • Can the practice accommodate your access needs, such as accessible facilities or equipment?

Confirm coverage with your insurer as well as the practice. Directory filters and listings can be incomplete or change, and a listed plan does not by itself confirm your benefits.

Ask how the clinician approaches weight and your care

Ask directly about the care you need rather than relying only on a provider’s label. You might say:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “How do you approach weight-related concerns when I come in for another health issue?”
  • “Is weight loss assumed to be one of my treatment goals?”
  • “Can we discuss evidence-based options without making weight the only outcome?”
  • “Can I decline routine weighing or request a blind weight when that is medically appropriate?”

Adapt the questions to your goals and medical situation. A request about weighing, for example, may need to be considered in clinical context. Notice whether the clinician listens to your priorities, explains their approach and discusses options and trade-offs respectfully. If the conversation feels dismissive, you can seek another opinion or ask for a referral; do not stop necessary care or treatment without discussing it with a qualified clinician.

Check credentials and licensing separately

For U.S. dietitians

RD and RDN are credential designations associated with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). CDR says recipients meet academic and supervised-practice requirements and pass a registration examination; the designations are legally protected. You can review its explanation of RD, RDN, DTR and NDTR credential use. Check current status through the appropriate credential or licensing channel in the provider’s jurisdiction, since requirements and protected titles differ by location.

For other clinicians and provider records

In the United States, the CMS NPI Registry can help you search provider records by name, specialty or location. An NPI is an identifier, not proof of qualification: CMS cautions, “Issuance of an NPI does not ensure or validate that the Health Care Provider is Licensed or Credentialed.” Check current licensure with the relevant state or jurisdictional licensing authority.

Credentials and licensing answer whether a provider holds a recognized qualification or license. They do not establish the clinician’s specialty experience, communication style, accessibility or approach to weight. Assess those separately.

Compare candidates on fit, not just labels

If several clinicians seem plausible, compare them against the needs that matter to you:

  • Scope and specialty: Does the clinician provide the type of care you need and have relevant experience?
  • Approach to weight: Do they address your presenting concern and discuss options in context, or presume weight loss is the goal?
  • Your specific needs: Consider whether experience with eating-disorder history, chronic conditions, disability, gender-affirming care, pregnancy or cultural needs is important to you.
  • Communication and agency: Do they answer plainly, invite your priorities and explain options without shame?
  • Credentials and license: Can you verify the relevant qualification and current jurisdictional status?
  • Practical access: Consider location, telehealth eligibility, appointment availability, language, accessible facilities or equipment, referral rules, insurance, fees and payment options.

No single universal directory or badge guarantees suitability. Depending on local listings and your needs, you may have to contact more than one office to find a qualified provider whose approach and logistics work for you.
