Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) visits are by appointment; do not count on being served as a walk-in.

- Open the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center Office Locator.
- Search by address, city, state, or ZIP code. You can also use your current location and select a search radius.
- Review nearby offices and compare distance, directions, hours, and—most importantly—the services each office offers.
Before traveling, confirm that the office provides help with your particular issue. The IRS appointment instructions direct users to inspect “LOCAL SERVICES” and the dropdown list to make sure the office has the services they need. Office hours, services, and appointment availability can change, so verify current details in the official listing or by calling the office.

How to make an IRS appointment
- In the locator results, select an office that offers the service you need.
- Call the appointment number listed for that office and ask to schedule a visit. Confirm the appointment details and any directions or office-specific instructions.
- Plan to arrive on time and check in when you get there. IRS guidance warns that an appointment may be canceled if you are more than 15 minutes late and have not checked in. Silence your phone during the visit.
IRS offices close on federal holidays. Call ahead rather than assuming an office is open or that a walk-in visit will be accepted.

- A current government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, and a second original form of ID.
- Your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
- Relevant supporting tax records. If you filed a return for the year in question, bring a copy.
Examples of additional ID include a state identification card, Social Security card, car title, voter registration card, mortgage statement, lease, utility bill showing your current address, birth certificate, and certain school records. A tribal membership card may serve as an additional form of ID, but IRS guidance does not accept it as a substitute for a driver’s license or passport.
Do not bring food or drinks, cameras, or weapons to the TAC.

If you are applying for or renewing an ITIN
TAC staff can review original documents and certified copies from the issuing agencies for an ITIN application or renewal. The IRS says the documents are returned at the end of the appointment; document review at a TAC is by appointment.
Ask about accessibility and language assistance
Professional telephone interpretation in many languages is available at every IRS office. Deaf or hard-of-hearing visitors who need a sign-language interpreter can call TTY/TDD at 800-829-4059 to make an appointment.

Check whether you can resolve the issue without a visit
The IRS offers online and phone options for common needs, including payment plans, transcripts, payments, refund checks, account information, tax questions, and filing online. If one of those options covers your issue, it may save you a trip. The IRS describes these alternatives on its online tools and resources page.

The IRS directs taxpayers to call ahead, and TAC service is by appointment. The Taxpayer Advocate Service, reporting IRS figures for Filing Season 2025 in its FY2026 Objectives Report to Congress, said TACs handled 546,000 scheduled face-to-face appointments and assisted more than 75,000 taxpayers without appointments. The report characterizes non-appointment assistance as limited and exceptional; those figures do not mean a particular office accepts walk-ins or has current openings.
