What a stronghold is and why you need one
A stronghold is an underground Overworld structure that contains the room with an End Portal. The portal is the normal route to the End, where the Ender Dragon is the main completion challenge. Finding a stronghold is therefore a two-part job: navigate to the structure, then search its rooms for the portal chamber.
Strongholds are not marked on the surface. You normally find one with an Eye of Ender, then explore its corridors, staircases, libraries, and side rooms until you reach the portal room. The same Eye-based navigation and twelve-frame activation process applies in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, although the world-generation patterns differ.

What to gather before searching
Ender pearls and blaze powder
An Eye of Ender is crafted from one Ender pearl and one blaze powder. Ender pearls are commonly obtained from Endermen, while blaze powder comes from processing blaze rods obtained in the Nether. You need both ingredients before you can begin locating a stronghold.
Food, tools, and a safe return route
Strongholds are underground mazes, so prepare for a normal exploration trip rather than carrying only the ingredients for the eyes. Take a dependable weapon, armor, a pickaxe, torches or another way to mark explored paths, food, and blocks for bridging or sealing dangerous openings. Keep your route legible: place markers consistently, or record coordinates, so you can return to the portal room without wandering through the same corridors repeatedly.

The portal frame has 12 positions. One or two positions may already contain an eye, so the final activation may require fewer than 12, but you should plan for the full 12. Locating the stronghold also consumes eyes, and some throws destroy the item instead of returning it.

How to use an Eye of Ender to locate a stronghold

Move into the Overworld
Strongholds are Overworld structures. Start in an open area where you can see the eye’s flight direction and move without immediately hitting a wall, tree, or building.

Throw an Eye of Ender
Hold the eye and press the normal use button for your edition and platform. It rises and travels in a specific direction. That direction leads toward the nearest stronghold, so watch the flight path rather than throwing and immediately looking away.

Travel in the indicated direction
Walk or run along the direction the eye chose. Do not throw an eye after every few steps; move a useful distance, then use another to correct your course. This limits unnecessary throws and preserves your supply.

Repeat the direction check
Throw another eye as you advance. Continue using the flight direction as a series of course corrections. An eye can shatter on any use, so collect the item only when it returns and keep moving even when one is lost.

Recognize that you are over the target area
As you pass the stronghold, the eye can begin directing you back toward the same area instead of continuing forward. An eye that descends toward the ground is another signal to slow down and investigate. These changes mean you should stop traveling in a straight line and work out the location on foot.

Dig down safely
Do not mine straight down beneath your feet. Use a staircase or another controlled descent, listen for hazards, and place blocks or markers as you go. The stronghold is underground, but the exact vertical level can vary, and a straight drop can put you in a cave, lava, or an unreachable opening.
How to search the stronghold once you enter
Finding the structure is not the same as finding the portal room. Strongholds contain branching corridors and several kinds of rooms. Mark every passage you have checked so you do not circle back and mistake an explored branch for a new one.

Follow corridors and staircases systematically
Start at the point where you entered and choose one branch. Explore it completely, then return to the last junction and take the next branch. Staircases can lead up or down into new sections, while dead ends and small side rooms can make the layout appear more complicated than it is.
Check libraries and side rooms
Libraries and other distinctive rooms are useful landmarks, but they are not the portal room. Continue exploring after finding one. Place torches or another consistent marker on the side of a corridor that indicates the direction back to your entrance.
Identify the End Portal room
The portal room contains the End Portal frame and is the room you need. If a passage appears to terminate at an unexpected wall, inspect nearby branches rather than assuming the portal is absent. Stronghold rooms can be separated by turns, staircases, and intersections, so a complete search is more reliable than checking only the first few chambers.

Inspect all 12 frame blocks
The portal frame has 12 positions arranged around the opening. Some may already contain Eyes of Ender. Count the empty positions instead of automatically using 12 eyes.

Place an Eye in every empty frame
Hold an Eye of Ender and use it on each empty frame block. Continue around the ring until no position is empty. The portal activates only when all 12 frame positions are filled, whether an eye was present originally or added by you.

Confirm activation before entering
When the final required eye is placed, the opening changes into the active End Portal. If nothing happens, inspect the ring for one empty frame and verify that you used the eye on the frame block rather than on the floor or a neighboring block.

Step through when prepared
Jumping into the active portal takes you to the End. Treat that step as a point of no return for your immediate plans: the Ender Dragon is the main completion challenge, so finish your equipment and supply checks before entering.
Java and Bedrock strongholds: what differs
The navigation technique is the same in both editions, but stronghold placement follows different rules. This matters when you are trying to reason about where a structure might be or why a particular world does not match a Java-only map or expectation.

The Bedrock spawn-distance rule refers to the original spawn location, not necessarily the place where you last slept or set a new respawn point. In either edition, the Eye remains the practical method because it directs you toward the nearest stronghold for that world.

An Eye shatters during a throw
This is normal behavior, not evidence that the throw failed. An Eye of Ender has a one-in-five chance of shattering each time it is used. Keep traveling in the last known direction, then use another eye when you need a correction. If you crafted only the exact number needed for the portal, a few broken eyes can leave you unable to finish the search or activate the frame.
The eye points in a different direction
Do not assume the new direction means the eyes are malfunctioning. Direction changes are useful information: you may have moved past the stronghold or crossed the area where its location is below you. Compare successive throws, move carefully around the point where the direction reverses, and begin a controlled descent when the eye repeatedly indicates the same area.
You cannot find the portal room
Return to your last marked junction and search each unvisited branch. Check both ends of staircases, libraries, and side rooms. Strongholds are larger than the portal chamber itself, so finding several rooms without seeing the frame does not mean the structure generated without a portal.
The portal does not activate
Look around the complete ring and count the empty frame positions. The portal requires all 12 positions to contain eyes. A frame that already held an eye still counts, but every empty position must be filled before the opening activates.
You are short of eyes at the portal
Count how many frames are already filled and compare that with your remaining supply. If the portal needs more eyes than you have, leave the stronghold, gather more Ender pearls and blaze powder, craft replacement eyes, and return using your markers or recorded coordinates. Avoid removing existing eyes; they are already satisfying frame positions.
Prepare for the End before you jump
Activation is the final navigation step, not the end of the challenge. The Ender Dragon is the primary fight associated with entering the End, and the portal room may be far from your main base. Before stepping through, verify that you have durable armor, a weapon suited to the fight, food, building blocks, and tools for emergency movement. Carry a way to replace lost equipment and make sure you can recognize the return route through the stronghold if you need to leave and restock.
Keep your strongest supplies organized rather than throwing everything into a chest in the portal room. If you die in the End, recovering items can be difficult, so enter only after deciding what equipment you are willing to risk and what backup plan you have for a second attempt.
Complete stronghold-to-End checklist
- Collect Ender pearls and blaze powder.
- Craft several Eyes of Ender, not merely the number you expect to place in the portal.
- Throw an eye in the Overworld and follow the direction in which it flies.
- Repeat the process while conserving eyes; each use has a one-in-five chance of breaking one.
- Investigate when the eye reverses toward the same area or descends.
- Dig down with a staircase or other safe method and mark your entrance.
- Explore corridors, staircases, libraries, and side rooms until you find the portal room.
- Count the 12 frame positions and fill every empty one.
- Check that the portal is active before entering.
- Finish your End equipment and supplies before stepping through to face the Ender Dragon.
The dependable sequence is simple: craft Eyes of Ender, follow their flight path, search the stronghold methodically, fill every empty portal frame, and enter only when you are ready for the End. Java’s ring layout and Bedrock’s random distribution change where strongholds generate, but they do not change that practical route.
