The practical answer: Wrath of the Machine requires a six-player group in Destiny: Rise of Iron. Confirm that you own the Rise of Iron content on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, then recruit through active Destiny community LFG channels. Put your platform, time zone, start time, open slots, microphone and language needs, and teaching or experienced-run expectations in the post. Bungie’s current Fireteam Finder documentation describes Destiny 2, not a native Destiny 1 queue for this raid.
What you need before recruiting
Wrath of the Machine is the raid released with Destiny: Rise of Iron. Bungie’s launch coverage in September 2016 framed the activity around “six of you,” so plan for a six-person fireteam rather than a smaller party. Rise of Iron launched on September 23, 2016.

Supported consoles
Rise of Iron content is supported on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Bungie identified PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as legacy consoles for this expansion, so do not advertise a PS3 or Xbox 360 Wrath of the Machine run. A player may still own other Destiny 1 content on an older console, but that does not make the Rise of Iron raid available there.

Access and account check
Before you post, sign in to the account and console you will use for the run. Confirm that Rise of Iron is available to that account and that the raid appears in your Destiny 1 activity selection. If you are recruiting on behalf of someone else, ask that person to perform the check as well; a player who cannot launch the expansion cannot fill one of the six places.

Set a realistic time commitment
A raid group needs a shared start time and an agreement to stay for the planned session. State the date, clock time, time zone and expected duration in your post, even if you do not know exactly how long the clear will take. “Tonight” is ambiguous across regions; “20:00 UTC” or “8 p.m. Eastern Time” gives applicants something they can convert.
The information every LFG post should contain
A complete listing reduces back-and-forth messages and filters out incompatible applicants. Bungie’s fireteam guidance identifies activity, platform, player count, schedule, microphone, language and character as useful listing fields. Apply those fields directly to your community post.
Use a searchable title
Put the raid name, platform, open slots, run type and start time in the title. For example:

Include the operational details
- Activity: Wrath of the Machine in Destiny: Rise of Iron.
- Platform: PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
- Schedule: date, start time, time zone and a sensible latest arrival time.
- Open places: the number of spaces left, with six as the full target.
- Run type: teaching or sherpa, experienced clear, blind attempt, normal goal or challenge-oriented goal.
- Communication: whether a working microphone is expected and which language the group will use.
- Experience: whether new players are welcome and whether experienced players should be prepared to explain steps.
- Character information: any character details the group needs to know, without assuming an applicant has a particular class or build.
- Contact method: how applicants should exchange their console ID or receive an invitation, using the private-message process of the community where you posted.

Where to look for players
Use active Destiny community LFG spaces rather than relying on a general friend list. The exact communities change over time, so search the channels you already use for console gaming and verify that a listing is specifically for Destiny 1 and Rise of Iron. Useful search wording includes “Wrath of the Machine sherpa,” “D1 raid teaching,” and the platform-specific equivalent.
Community LFG channels
Community channels are the most direct route when you need several players. Post in a space that permits raid recruitment, then monitor replies and private messages. Repeat the platform, time and run type when answering each applicant; a short confirmation prevents someone from assuming that an Xbox listing is a PlayStation session or that a teaching run is an experienced-only clear.

A scheduled event works well when your time zone or availability is unusual. Create the listing early, collect confirmations, and set a deadline for replacing people who do not respond. Scheduled recruiting gives you time to find a substitute instead of discovering a missing sixth player at launch.
Last-minute groups
For an immediate run, state “starting now” or an exact near-term time and the number of open places. Last-minute posts can fill quickly when several players are already online, but they also need stricter confirmation: ask each person to acknowledge the platform, microphone expectations and stay-time requirement before sending an invite.

How to recruit step by step
- Verify the expansion and console. Confirm Rise of Iron access on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Do not promise a PS3 or Xbox 360 run for this expansion.
- Decide the group’s goal. Choose teaching, experienced, blind, normal or challenge-oriented before you write the title. A vague goal attracts mismatched expectations.
- Set the schedule. Choose a date, start time and time zone. Add the latest acceptable arrival time and ask applicants to remain available for the full session.
- Count the roster. Record how many players are confirmed and advertise only the remaining places. Stop at six confirmed players unless you are maintaining a clearly identified substitute list.
- Publish the complete listing. Include platform, activity, player count, communication requirements, language, experience level and the way applicants should share their console ID.
- Screen for compatibility. Ask each applicant whether they have cleared the raid, whether they want instruction, whether they can use the required microphone and whether the time works in their time zone.
- Confirm the roster privately. Send the final start time and platform to accepted players. Keep console IDs private rather than posting them publicly when the community’s rules allow private messages.
- Reconfirm before launch. Ask the roster to reply at a stated checkpoint, such as one hour before start. Replace anyone who cannot confirm instead of assuming they will appear.
- Start with a shared briefing. State the run goal, teaching pace, communication language and what happens if someone disconnects. This is especially important when first-time players are present.
- Update or close the post. Mark the listing full when six players are confirmed. If a player leaves, reopen only the number of places actually available.
Finding a sherpa or teaching group
Bungie’s post-raid community update said that many sherpas knew the route and encouraged players who had not tried the raid to request a guide. That advice still gives a useful recruiting strategy: search specifically for a teaching group instead of joining an experienced-only listing and hoping it becomes instructional.

Search terms that set expectations
- “Wrath of the Machine sherpa”
- “Destiny 1 raid teaching”
- “Rise of Iron first clear”
- “Wrath of the Machine PS4 teaching” or “Wrath of the Machine Xbox One teaching”
When you find a candidate listing, confirm that it names Destiny 1 or Rise of Iron. Similar wording can refer to a Destiny 2 activity, and a Destiny 2 listing is not evidence that the Destiny 1 raid is supported there.

What to ask a prospective sherpa
- Is the session specifically for Wrath of the Machine in Rise of Iron?
- Is the group teaching first-time players, or does it require a previous clear?
- What platform and language does the group use?
- What start time and time zone should you confirm?
- Is a microphone required, and can the group explain mechanics at a learner-friendly pace?
Fireteam Finder: what it can and cannot do here
Bungie’s Fireteam Finder guide explains that Destiny 2 players can open Fireteam Finder from the Roster tab or an activity launch screen, search listings and create a listing. A separate Bungie guide describes fields such as activity, platform, player count, schedule, microphone, language and character.
Those pages document a Destiny 2 feature. They should not be presented as proof of a native Fireteam Finder queue for a Wrath of the Machine run in Destiny 1. For this raid, treat community LFG recruitment as the dependable plan. If a current Bungie interface shows a listing option, read its game and activity label carefully; a Destiny 2 result is not interchangeable with a Destiny 1 raid group.
Screen applicants without slowing the group
Use a short compatibility checklist
- Correct console: PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
- Correct game and expansion: Destiny 1 with Rise of Iron.
- Correct time zone and start time.
- Availability for the full planned session.
- Microphone and language match.
- Agreement on teaching, experienced, blind, normal or challenge goal.
- Clear understanding of how to exchange console IDs and receive an invite.
Ask experience questions neutrally
“Have you cleared Wrath of the Machine before?” is more useful than asking applicants to prove their skill. Follow with “Do you want a teaching run or an experienced group?” A first-time player who is prepared to learn can be a better fit than an experienced player who expects a fast clear while the rest of the group is learning.
Keep a substitute list
If the community permits it, maintain one or two clearly labelled substitutes for a scheduled session. Tell substitutes that they are not part of the six-person active roster unless someone withdraws. This avoids sending conflicting invitations and gives you a recovery option for a no-show.

Communication and group etiquette
Agree on microphone and language requirements before the invite. A microphone is not a guarantee of useful communication, so also ask players to keep callouts concise and to say when they need an explanation. If your group is teaching, tell experienced players to leave room for questions; if it is an experienced clear, say that plainly so new players do not join under the wrong assumption.
Use private messages for console IDs when possible, and follow the rules of the community where you recruit. Do not ask applicants for account passwords, payment information or unrelated personal details. If a person pressures you to share sensitive information or behaves abusively, remove them from consideration and use the community’s reporting or blocking controls.
Troubleshooting common recruiting failures
Only five players confirm
Reopen the listing with the exact number of places still available and repeat the start time and platform. Contact your substitute list before changing the run type; switching from teaching to experienced at the last minute can make the remaining applicants unsuitable.
Applicants reply but do not confirm the time zone
Send one clear conversion: “Start is 20:00 UTC.” Ask for a yes-or-no confirmation and a latest arrival time. If an applicant cannot commit, keep recruiting rather than counting them as confirmed.

Ask them to verify Rise of Iron access on the account and console they will use. Ownership of another Destiny 1 release does not establish access to the expansion. A player on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 cannot be promised a Rise of Iron slot because Bungie limited the expansion to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The listing attracts Destiny 2 players
Add “Destiny 1” and “Rise of Iron” to both the title and the first line of the body. When replying, explicitly state that the group is not for a Destiny 2 raid. This distinction is essential because Bungie’s current Fireteam Finder documentation is written for Destiny 2.
The group has mixed expectations
Pause before launching and restate the goal: teaching, experienced, blind, normal or challenge-oriented. Ask players to opt out if that goal is not what they wanted. Replacing one mismatched player before the run is usually less disruptive than arguing about pace after it begins.
A scheduled player disappears
Use the confirmation deadline stated in your post. If there is no reply, invite a substitute and update the roster. Avoid repeatedly holding a place for someone who has not confirmed; the six-player requirement makes one uncertain slot significant.
What the raid’s legacy status means
Bungie states that Destiny 1 will no longer receive planned game updates or content. That means you should not expect a new official queue, fresh raid matchmaking feature or ongoing content rollout to solve recruitment. Existing access on the supported consoles and community-organized groups are the relevant paths for arranging a run.
Legacy status does not change the practical recruiting checklist: six players, the correct Rise of Iron access, a compatible PlayStation 4 or Xbox One platform, and an agreed schedule. It does mean that community availability can vary, so clear posts and reliable confirmations are more valuable than assuming an official service will fill the roster.
A final pre-launch checklist
- Six-player target counted, with substitutes labelled separately.
- Every active player confirmed on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
- Every active player confirmed to have Destiny: Rise of Iron.
- Date, start time and time zone repeated in the final message.
- Teaching, experienced, blind, normal or challenge goal agreed.
- Microphone and language expectations agreed.
- Console IDs exchanged through the community’s accepted private method.
- Latest arrival time and full-session expectation understood.
- Listing edited or closed when the roster reaches six.
Bottom line
To find a Wrath of the Machine fireteam, recruit six players through active Destiny community LFG spaces, not by assuming Bungie’s Destiny 2 Fireteam Finder is a Destiny 1 raid queue. Confirm Rise of Iron access on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, publish a complete time-zone-aware listing, and match players by teaching needs, communication and run goal before sending invites.
