Among claimable options, prioritize a player with a real route-and-target role—not just a recent touchdown—and weigh matchup and scoring format after that. Recheck injury news and your lineup before kickoff: no tight end is a guaranteed replacement.
Start with the injury report and your league’s waiver pool
Confirm whether your tight end is likely to play
Check the player’s latest official team game-status report and practice information. The NFL defines the designations this way: “Questionable means it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game; Doubtful means it is unlikely the player will participate; and Out means the player will not play.” See the NFL injury-report definitions. A designation speaks to anticipated availability, not fantasy production. Check again close to kickoff because status can change.

Verify who you can actually add
Search the available-player list in your fantasy league, then check whether you can make a claim in time. League settings determine roster slots, waiver period and type, transaction deadlines, and when players lock. NFL leagues can customize team counts, roster positions, waiver rules, and player locks, so a player described as available in a weekly article may not be available in your league. See the NFL league-settings guidance.

Look for routes and targets
Routes show whether a tight end is regularly involved in the passing game; targets show whether those routes are drawing opportunities. Repeated participation is stronger evidence of a usable role than a touchdown on one unusual play. Consider recent involvement across more than one game when possible, rather than treating one box score as proof of a lasting change.

Find out why the opportunity exists
A backup can become a good short-term option when an injured teammate’s absence opens a clear role. Ask whether that absence is likely to continue and whether other pass-catchers are competing for the same targets. For example, NFL Fantasy’s 2026 Week 2 analysis said Michael Mayer was an excellent start if Brock Bowers was inactive again. It reported that Mayer ran 23 routes and led the Raiders with seven targets in Week 1. That was a conditional, dated example—not a recommendation for another week. Check the player’s current status and usage before applying the same logic.
Use the matchup as context
Opponent performance against tight ends can help separate otherwise similar options, but a favorable matchup does not make a thin route or target role dependable. NFL Fantasy’s start/sit analysis considered opponent production and defensive metrics alongside role and recent output. Its 2026 article, citing the 2025 season, reported that Washington allowed tight ends 12 touchdowns (tied for second-most) and 9.1 yards per target (the league’s most) as context for its Week 1 Goedert recommendation. Those are specific past-season figures, not a threshold for choosing a replacement now.

Match the option to your scoring
In PPR and half-PPR leagues, receptions and target volume contribute directly to scoring, making a player who gets steady looks especially relevant. In standard scoring, yardage and touchdown potential carry relatively more weight. Check your league’s scoring settings instead of assuming a default; scoring is customizable.

Choose a one-week streamer or a longer-term hold
If your starter is expected to miss time, or the role is too uncertain to trust, a waiver replacement may be warranted. For a one-week absence, a streamer may be enough; for a longer absence, consider whether the replacement’s opportunity is likely to persist. FantasyPros’ weekly streamer coverage and NFL Fantasy’s replacement advice illustrate these approaches, but their player recommendations are tied to the week and season in which they were published.
Rank #3
Availability figures in those articles are not guarantees for your league. FantasyPros’ 2026 Week 1 streamer article said its listed tight ends were rostered in fewer than 70% of Yahoo leagues at publication. That rate does not tell you whether a player is available in your league today. NFL Fantasy’s 2026 Week 1 discussion of T.J. Hockenson and Mark Andrews likewise reflects that article’s season context; recheck current usage and status rather than carrying its conclusions forward.
Use projections as a cross-check
A projection can help sort candidates, but it cannot confirm injury status, establish that the player is claimable, or tell you whether recent involvement will continue. NFL Fantasy’s Best Available tool offers filters for This Week, Rest of Season, Playoffs, or a future week. Use a weekly view for a short-term replacement and a rest-of-season view when deciding whether to hold a player, then compare the output with role, availability, matchup, and your league settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison checklist
- Availability: Is the candidate expected to play, and is any late-week status unresolved?
- Opportunity: Does recent usage show routes and targets rather than an isolated scoring play?
- Role clarity: Is there a credible reason for the opportunity, and is it likely to last?
- Scoring fit: Does the option’s reception, yardage, or touchdown profile suit your format?
- Matchup: Does the opponent add useful context without being mistaken for a substitute for opportunity?
- Acquisition feasibility: Can you make the move under your waiver rules, deadline, and roster limits?
- Time horizon: Are you filling one week or replacing a player whose absence may continue?
Tight end scoring remains volatile even when a player has a strong role. Treat the criteria as a way to compare options, not as a promise of a safe floor.
