How to find a person or pet in Google Photos

To find someone or a pet in Google Photos, open Search and select the face group, or on Android open Collections > People & pets and tap a face. You can search by a name or nickname only after you label that face group. On a computer, use Google Photos search or the People & pets collection.

If the collection is missing or a face does not appear, check whether Face Groups is available for your region, domain, and account, whether it is enabled, and whether Google Photos has created any groups. The steps below explain each route, the privacy controls, and what to do when results are wrong.

Find a person or pet in the Google Photos app

Google Photos presents recognized faces as groups. A group may contain one person, one pet, or several photos in which Google believes the same face appears. The exact entry point differs slightly by device and app version, so try both the Search view and the People & pets collection instead of assuming one missing shortcut means the feature is unavailable.

Device Path What happens next
Android Open Google Photos, tap Collections, then People & pets. Tap a face group to browse matching photos and videos.
Mobile app with the Search view Open Search and tap a face label. The selected group’s results open. If it has a name, you can also use that name in the search box.
Computer Open Google Photos and use Search, or open the People & pets collection. Select a face group to see its matching items. Google’s computer help says relevant matches appear first, followed by relevant photos and videos in reverse chronological order.

On Android, the documented route is specifically Collections > People & pets. In another app layout, the same groups may be exposed from Search. If you do not see a person’s name, look for an unlabeled face tile rather than concluding that the photos are absent.

On a computer, classic Search can return a group when you select the face or enter its saved label. Google says the most relevant matches are shown first; after those, relevant photos and videos are listed in reverse chronological order. That ordering can help when you are looking for a recent picture but also want older results.

Google’s official computer instructions are available at Search by people, things & places in your photos. Android-specific face-group instructions are in Set up and manage your face groups.

Give a face group a name so it is searchable

An unlabeled group can still be opened by tapping its face, but Google says text search by a person’s name or nickname works only after you label the group. Naming is therefore an optional organization step for browsing, but a required step for a name-based lookup.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Open the face group from People & pets or Search.
  2. Choose Add a name.
  3. Enter the person’s name or a nickname and save it.
  4. Later, type that label in the Google Photos search box to retrieve the group.

Use a label you will recognize consistently. If you prefer a nickname, Google’s instructions allow one; the important requirement is that the group has been labeled. If you have several unlabeled face tiles, open each one and name only the group you can identify confidently.

Labels are private to the account holder. Sharing a photo does not expose the face label to the people who receive that photo, according to Google’s Android help. The privacy of the label is separate from whether the underlying photo itself is shared.

Search for yourself with the “me” label

Google Photos supports a special me search. First, open your own face group and set that face group as “me” using the available naming option. After it is set, searching for me can bring up photos of you. This is separate from merely typing your name: the group must be designated as your own face group.

If you have not labeled or designated your own face group, a search for me will not substitute for that setup. Open the face tile first, confirm it is your group, and then apply the available name or “me” option.

Use classic Search for a direct lookup

Classic Search is the straightforward choice when you know who or what you want to find. Open the Search view, choose the relevant face group, or enter its saved name. This method works on the web and in the mobile app and does not require a conversational prompt.

For a simple request such as “show my dog” or “find photos of Alex,” the face-group list is usually easier to verify than a conversational result. You can see which group you opened, review the photos and videos, and correct an individual mistaken match without changing the original library item.

Results can include photos and videos in your library that match the group. Google also documents a shared-content badge for items surfaced from shared albums or conversations. If you do not want shared items included, use the control in Search to exclude shared content.

Do not assume that every result is a file you personally uploaded or backed up. A shared item can be relevant to the search while being outside your own library. The shared-content badge and exclusion control help distinguish those cases.

Classic Search versus Ask Photos

Ask Photos is an optional conversational search experience, not a replacement for the face-group list. Google describes it as experimental, and says responses can be unexpected or inaccurate. It is available on mobile after you opt in to Gemini features in Photos; availability depends on your region, domain, and account type.

Consideration Classic Search Ask Photos
Best for A direct lookup of a labeled person or pet, or a simple filter. Conversational questions that combine several ideas, where the feature is offered.
Platforms Web and mobile Google Photos. Mobile experience described by Google.
Setup Open Search or People & pets. A face group needs a label for name-based searching. Opt in to Gemini features in Photos before using Ask Photos.
Reliability Uses the standard Search and face-group results. Experimental; Google warns that results may be unexpected or inaccurate.
Availability Face Groups and related features can still vary by region, domain, and account type. Availability also varies by region, domain, and account type.

Ask Photos is not required to find a labeled person or pet. It is an optional mobile conversational experience, and opting in to Gemini features does not change the basic Search steps. For one person, one pet, or a known label, start with classic Search. Treat an Ask Photos answer as a convenience and verify important results by opening the underlying photos.

Why People & pets is missing

Google lists three principal explanations when the People & pets collection does not appear:

  • Face Groups is unavailable: The feature may not be offered for your region, Google Workspace or other domain, or account type.
  • Face Groups is turned off: The setting that creates and maintains face groups is disabled.
  • No groups have been created: Google Photos has not generated any face groups for the account.

These possibilities are different. If the feature is unavailable for the account, changing a setting will not make the collection appear. If it is available but disabled, the Face Groups privacy panel is the relevant place to inspect. If it is enabled but no groups have been generated, there may simply be no face tile to open yet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A face that has not been placed into a group cannot be found through that group’s label. Google’s reviewed help pages do not document a manual tool for forcing an undetected face into a new group, so there is no supported “add this face” procedure to follow.

Check and change Face Groups on Android

On Android, Google documents this settings path:

  1. Tap your profile picture or initials in Google Photos.
  2. Open Google Photos settings.
  3. Tap Privacy.
  4. Open Face Groups.

That panel controls whether Photos groups faces. It also contains Show pets with people. Turn that option off if you want people grouped but do not want pet groups shown alongside them.

The pet option is narrower than the main switch. If people groups are visible and your goal is simply to stop pet groups appearing with them, inspect Show pets with people rather than turning off all Face Groups.

Be careful with the main Face Groups switch. Google warns that disabling it removes the groups, the face models used to create those groups, and the labels you created. Its official help states:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“If you turn off Face Groups, you delete: Face groups in your account; Face models that were used to create those face groups; Face labels that you created.”

Therefore, do not toggle Face Groups off merely as a first troubleshooting step if you want to preserve your existing organization. Check availability and account settings first, and understand that turning it off is destructive to the face-group data even though it is not the same as deleting the original photos from your library.

When Google puts the wrong photos in a group

If a face group contains a mistaken match, remove that individual result from the group. Google says removing a result from a face group does not delete the underlying photo or video from your library; it only corrects the group’s contents.

Use this correction when a different person or pet has been associated with the selected face. Keep the distinction clear: deleting an item from your library is a separate action, while removing a group result changes only the face-group association.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is also the safer response when you are unsure whether the problem is the photo itself or the grouping. First remove the incorrect result from the group and then check the group again. Do not delete the library item unless you independently want it gone.

Do not confuse Memories controls with Search controls

Google Photos also lets you hide a face from the featured memories carousel. That setting changes what appears in Memories; it is not a command to remove the person’s photos from Search or from your library.

  • Show less: Suppresses dedicated memories for that face, but the person can still appear in memories built around group photos.
  • Blocked: Excludes the face from Memories, including group-photo memories.

For example, choosing Show less can reduce a dedicated memory about one person while still allowing that person to appear in a memory centered on a group. Blocked is the stronger Memories setting because it also excludes the face from group-photo memories.

Use the Memories setting when the goal is to change the featured carousel. Use face-group corrections when the goal is to fix which images belong to a person or pet group. Neither Memories option deletes photos, renames a face group, or removes the person from ordinary Search.

Shared albums and conversations can affect results

Search may surface unsaved items from shared albums or conversations. Google marks this type of result with a shared-content badge and provides a control to exclude shared items. If you are looking only for pictures stored in your own library, enable that exclusion rather than assuming every result is a file you uploaded or backed up yourself.

This matters when checking whether a person or pet is actually represented in your account. A result from shared content can be useful for viewing, but it does not necessarily mean the corresponding file is part of your backed-up library. Review the badge before drawing conclusions from a result set.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A practical troubleshooting sequence

Follow these checks in order so you do not erase face-group data unnecessarily:

  1. Open both entry points: Check Search and, on Android, Collections > People & pets. A group may be visible in one route even if you are looking in the other.
  2. Look for an unlabeled group: If you see the face but no name, open it and use Add a name. Name-based text search will not work before this step.
  3. Check Face Groups privacy settings: Follow the Android path profile picture or initials > Google Photos settings > Privacy > Face Groups. Do not switch the feature off without accepting the deletion of groups, face models, and labels.
  4. Check availability: If the option is absent altogether, the feature may not be available for your region, domain, or account type.
  5. Check pet visibility: If people groups appear but a pet does not, inspect Show pets with people.
  6. Inspect shared-content controls: A missing photo may be outside your own library, or an unexpected result may come from a shared album or conversation.
  7. Correct individual mistakes: Remove a wrong result from the group rather than deleting the photo or video.

Run the checks from top to bottom. The first two steps are non-destructive. The settings check explains whether grouping is enabled, while the availability check prevents you from treating a regional, domain, or account limitation as a local app error. Only after you understand those conditions should you consider any change to the main Face Groups switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If none of these paths exposes the group, the face may not have been grouped, and Google’s documented instructions provide no manual face-add function. The practical options are to use ordinary visual or date-based searches for the item you can locate, or to check the account and feature availability with the administrator or support channel responsible for that account.

Privacy details to keep in mind

Face labels are account-private, including on shared photos. The labels and face models are part of Face Groups data, so disabling the feature removes that organization even though it does not serve as a library-wide photo deletion command. If other people use the same Google account, they may be able to see the account’s labels; sharing a photo with a different account does not transfer those labels.

For a sensitive library, review whether shared-content results are useful before relying on Search, and use the Memories controls only for the presentation of featured memories. Neither control should be treated as a general privacy eraser.

The most consequential privacy choice is the main Face Groups switch because Google says it deletes the account’s face groups, the face models used to create them, and labels you created. That consequence is different from removing one mistaken result, which leaves the photo or video in the library, and different again from hiding a face in Memories, which changes only the featured-memory experience.

Which method should you use?

  • You know the person or pet’s saved label: Use Search and type the label.
  • You have not named the group: Open People & pets, tap the face, and choose Add a name.
  • You are browsing on a computer: Use Google Photos Search or the People & pets collection.
  • You want a conversational description: Ask Photos may help on supported mobile accounts after Gemini opt-in, but verify its experimental results.
  • You cannot see People & pets: Check feature availability, Face Groups settings, and whether any groups exist before changing settings.
  • You see an incorrect match: Remove the result from the group; do not delete the original photo unless deletion is actually your goal.
  • You want fewer pet groups but still want people grouping: Check Show pets with people instead of disabling Face Groups entirely.
  • You need to change the Memories carousel: Use Show less or Blocked, remembering that these settings do not remove ordinary Search results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I see People & pets in Google Photos?

Google lists three possibilities: Face Groups is unavailable for your region, domain, or account type; Face Groups is turned off; or no face groups have been created yet. Check Search as well as Collections > People & pets, then inspect profile picture or initials > Google Photos settings > Privacy > Face Groups on Android.

Can I search for a person by name before naming the face group?

No. Google says name or nickname searches work after you label the face group. Open the unlabeled group, choose Add a name, and save the label first.

How do I find myself in Google Photos?

Open your own face group and set it as “me” using the available naming option. Once that face group is designated as yours, search for me.

What happens if I turn off Face Groups?

Google warns that turning it off deletes the face groups in your account, the face models used to create them, and the face labels you created. This is face-group data, not a command to delete the original photos, but it removes the organization you created.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does removing a wrong photo from a face group delete the photo?

No. Removing an individual result corrects the face group and leaves the underlying photo or video in your library. Deleting the library item is a separate action.

What is the difference between Show less and Blocked for a face?

Both are Memories controls, not general Search controls. Show less suppresses dedicated memories but can leave the person in group-photo memories. Blocked excludes the face from Memories, including group-photo memories.

Why are shared photos appearing in my person search?

Google Photos can surface unsaved items from shared albums or conversations. Look for the shared-content badge and use Search’s control to exclude shared items when you want results limited to your own library.

Can I manually add a face that Google Photos did not group?

Google’s documented instructions do not provide a manual tool for forcing an undetected face into a new group. If no group appears, check availability, settings, and existing unlabeled groups, then use ordinary visual or date-based searches for the item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with Search or Android’s Collections > People & pets. Name the face group before trying a text search, and use the special me designation for your own photos. If the collection is missing, check availability, Face Groups settings, and whether groups exist. Remember that turning off Face Groups deletes its groups, models, and labels; removing one wrong result does not delete the photo; and Memories controls do not remove a person from Search.
