Open Find My on another Apple device signed in to the same Apple Account, select Devices, and check the missing iPhone’s location and the time it was last detected. If you can’t use another Apple device, go to iCloud.com/find. Turn on Notify When Found if no location is available, and mark the iPhone as lost to protect it while you search.
Offline finding is not guaranteed: Find My must have been set up before the loss, and the iPhone and surrounding network must meet the feature’s conditions. The location shown may be a past report, not the phone’s current position.

Check the location and its timestamp
- On another Apple device: Open Find My, tap Devices, then select the missing iPhone. Check the map and the time it was detected. Apple’s instructions are at How to find your lost iPhone or iPad.
- On the web: If you don’t have another Apple device, visit iCloud.com/find and sign in to your Apple Account. Apple says the site may display an offline device’s last known location for up to 24 hours.
- If there’s no location: Turn on Notify When Found and allow Find My notifications. The app may show No location found or Offline; these messages mean it has no current report to show, not that a new report is guaranteed.
The documented time window depends on where you look. In the Find My app, Apple says the last location may be available for up to seven days in the described case where an iPhone has no current location or its battery has run out. On iCloud.com/find, Apple describes up to 24 hours for an offline last-known location. These are different instructions for different interfaces, not a single guaranteed retention period. When Find My network is enabled, nearby Apple devices can detect a Bluetooth signal from a missing iPhone and relay an encrypted location report. Apple says the report is encrypted so that only the owner’s device can retrieve and decrypt it; Apple does not hold the decryption key. Multiple reports can help the owner’s app produce a more precise location. A map point can still be approximate and may show where the phone was detected, rather than where it is now. For supported iPhones with the relevant settings enabled, Apple says Find My network can provide location for up to 24 hours after the iPhone is turned off, or up to five hours in power reserve mode. Send Last Location can automatically send a location when the battery charge becomes critically low. These are stated feature limits, not a promise that a specific phone will report its position. Mark the iPhone as lost and keep it protected
- In Find My or iCloud.com/find, select the iPhone and choose the option to mark it as lost. Follow the prompts to lock it and, if offered, display a message and contact number.
- Use contact details that let a finder reach you without exposing sensitive information. Apple says applicable payment cards and passes are suspended when Lost Mode is enabled.
- If the phone is offline, Lost Mode may show Pending until it reconnects. Keep checking for reports. An offline iPhone cannot play a sound or be remotely erased until it has connectivity.
If the location appears to indicate theft, don’t confront anyone yourself. A map report does not verify who has the phone; keep it in Lost Mode and follow local and carrier procedures.

Do not remove the iPhone from Find My or your Apple Account simply to clear it from a device list. Apple warns that removing it from Find My also removes Activation Lock, which can make it easier for someone else to activate and resell. Keep it associated with your account while pursuing recovery or a coverage claim. See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance and lost-device guidance.
If Find My was not enabled before the loss
Apple says that if Find My wasn’t turned on before the iPhone went missing, it won’t appear in Find My or at iCloud.com/find, and you can’t use those services to mark it as lost or erase it remotely. No tracker, app, or accessory can enable Find My on a phone retroactively.
