The reliable way to find a nearby aggregate supplier is to combine your state transportation department’s source information with direct calls to local quarries, pits, and bulk-material yards. Start with the Federal Highway Administration’s state resource index, use your state’s producer list, map, or approved-source database to build a shortlist, then confirm material gradation, quantity, stock, delivery terms, and project documentation with each business. Compare complete delivered quotes—not just a per-ton or per-yard price—before ordering.
What you need to know before searching
“Construction aggregate” covers several materials used for concrete, asphalt, drainage, road bases, utility trenches, and general site work. A supplier may describe products by rock type, product name, particle-size range, gradation, or intended use. Two materials that both sound like “gravel” can behave very differently under traffic, in a concrete mix, or beneath a slab.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Write down the project requirements before you search. Your notes should identify the intended use, the material name or specification, required size or gradation, estimated quantity, delivery address, preferred delivery date, and whether pickup is possible. If an engineer, municipality, contractor, or permit document specifies a particular aggregate, copy that wording exactly when contacting suppliers.
- Use: for example, concrete, asphalt, drainage, pipe bedding, a driveway base, or general fill.
- Material: coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, crushed stone, natural gravel, manufactured sand, or another specified product.
- Size or gradation: the exact designation in the plans, specification, or supplier catalogue.
- Quantity: the required tons, cubic yards, truckloads, or another unit, plus a reasonable allowance for waste or settlement if your project professional advises one.
- Site details: address, road width, turning space, overhead obstructions, surface conditions, and unloading location.
Without these details, a supplier can quote a product that is locally available but unsuitable for the job, or price a delivery that cannot safely reach the site.

Start with the FHWA state resource index
The Federal Highway Administration maintains a state-by-state index that points to state transportation resources for aggregate producers and material sources. The page was updated March 25, 2024. Select the state where the material will be delivered, not necessarily the state where the project owner or contractor is headquartered.
The linked state resources differ. One state may publish a producer directory; another may provide an interactive map, a material-source inventory, an approved-product list, or several of these tools. Use the state entry as a navigation aid to the agency’s current resource rather than assuming every state uses the same terminology or approval process.
What to look for on the state page
- Producer or supplier lists: names and locations of companies that extract, process, or sell aggregate.
- Material-source inventories: sites associated with particular rock, sand, or gravel materials.
- Facility maps: searchable locations that can reveal plants, pits, quarries, and distribution yards near the delivery area.
- Approved-source or approved-product information: resources used for transportation projects or other specification-controlled work.
- Quality-control or test-data pages: documents that help determine whether a source can meet a project requirement.
These government resources are useful for discovery and compliance research. They are not live shopping carts: a listing does not establish today’s stock, price, delivery radius, minimum order, or operating status.
Use your state DOT’s supplier tools
Supplier maps and directories
State transportation departments often organize information differently. North Carolina’s transportation department describes a supplier map covering construction-material suppliers in and around the state, including coarse and fine aggregates. Florida’s transportation department provides aggregate source listings and queries for production-facility maps. Similar tools may be labeled “material sources,” “producer list,” “approved sources,” “aggregate resources,” or “construction materials suppliers.”
Search the state agency site for combinations such as aggregate sources, aggregate producers, material source map, and approved aggregate. Add the state name and, if needed, the county or nearest metropolitan area. Open the agency’s own result rather than relying on an old directory copied elsewhere.
Read the map record, not just the pin
When a map identifies a facility, record the business name, physical address, contact details, material categories, and any source or permit identifier shown. Check whether the entry describes a production site, an office, a stockpile, or an approved source. A facility close to your site may not sell directly to the public, may produce only certain grades, or may dispatch material through another yard.
Keep jurisdictional rules separate
An approval list from one state is not a nationwide certification. State and project requirements differ, and a source accepted for a state highway job may not be required—or may not be accepted—for a private driveway, building pad, or municipal project in another jurisdiction. Use the rules that govern the actual project.

Broaden the search after building a state-based shortlist
Once you have names from the DOT resource, use ordinary web and map searches to find additional nearby businesses and current contact information. Useful search wording includes:
Where can I buy gravel near me?local aggregate supplierstone delivery near mebulk sand and gravel suppliercrushed stone quarry [county or city]aggregate delivery [project ZIP code]
Search results can include landscape yards, ready-mix companies, trucking firms, quarries, sand-and-gravel pits, and brokers. A business that sells bagged decorative stone may not handle bulk construction loads. Ask whether it sells the required product in the quantity and delivery format you need.
Use directories and map listings as leads. Call the business or obtain a written quote before treating any detail as current. Online listings commonly omit seasonal closures, changed ownership, revised delivery zones, and temporary stock shortages.
Build a shortlist and verify each supplier
Three or more plausible suppliers usually give you enough information to identify differences in material, service, and delivered cost. Contact each supplier with the same project brief so the responses are comparable.

Confirm the exact material
Ask for the supplier’s product name, aggregate type, source, and size or gradation. If your plans specify a number, class, sieve range, base designation, or other standard, read it to the salesperson and ask the supplier to repeat it on the quote. Clarify whether the product is washed, screened, crushed, blended, or contains fines. Do not substitute a similarly named product without approval from the person responsible for the project specification.
Confirm quantity and available stock
Tell the supplier the total quantity and preferred unit. Ask whether the quoted amount is sold by weight, volume, or truckload, and how the supplier converts between those units. Then ask whether the full quantity is physically available now, whether it is split between locations, and whether additional production is scheduled. The state directories do not establish real-time inventory, so this conversation is essential.
Confirm delivery coverage and timing
Give the complete delivery address and ask whether the supplier serves it directly or uses a separate carrier. Confirm the earliest delivery date, delivery window, number of loads, and the process for rescheduling. Ask what happens if rain, road restrictions, or a truck breakdown prevents delivery.

Describe access conditions before the truck arrives. A large end-dump truck may need a wide approach, adequate overhead clearance, a firm surface, and room to turn. Tell the supplier about narrow roads, weight limits, steep grades, gates, bridges, soft ground, or unloading beside an occupied building.

Ask about minimums and pickup
Confirm the minimum order, minimum delivery charge, and whether a smaller quantity can be collected at the yard. Pickup may be practical for a small job, but ask what vehicle is permitted, whether loading is available during your visit, and how the material will be weighed or ticketed.
Request documentation when it matters
For specification-driven work, ask whether the supplier can provide a source approval reference, test results, quality-control documentation, gradation information, or delivery tickets. State and project agencies may require particular records. For an informal residential project, you may need only a product description and ticket, but establish that before ordering rather than after the material arrives.
Check project acceptance and aggregate quality
Public and specification-controlled projects
Public works, transportation projects, concrete supplied under an engineer’s specification, and other controlled work can require an approved source and documented quality controls. Florida transportation documents, for example, address source approval and producer quality-control requirements. That does not make Florida’s process a universal rule; it illustrates why the governing project documents must be checked first.
Ask the project owner, engineer, inspector, or relevant agency:

- Is a recent test report required with the submittal or delivery?

Quality information to review
North Carolina transportation resources publish aggregate-resource and test-data information that can include specific gravity, abrasion, absorption, fineness modulus, and sulfate soundness. These measures address different performance characteristics; a higher or lower value is not automatically better outside the applicable specification. Use the limits and test methods named by your project rather than trying to choose a source from one number alone.
For private work without an engineer, quality still matters. Ask what the product is intended for, whether it contains excessive clay or unwanted debris, and whether the supplier recommends a particular aggregate for drainage, compaction, concrete, or pavement. If failure would be expensive, obtain professional advice before ordering.

Compare delivered quotes, not headline prices
Request the same quantity and product description from every supplier. A low per-ton figure can become the most expensive option after freight, a minimum-load charge, extra mileage, or a second trip.
| Comparison axis | What to record from every supplier | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Aggregate identity | Type, product name, source, size or gradation, and whether it is washed, crushed, screened, or blended | A cheaper material is not equivalent if its grading or composition differs from the requirement. |
| Quantity and unit | Total tons, cubic yards, or loads; conversion basis; expected number of deliveries | Quotes using different units cannot be compared safely without confirming the conversion. |
| Delivered price | Material charge, freight, fuel or mileage surcharge, taxes, minimum-load charge, and any waiting or access fee | The delivered total is the amount that affects your budget. |
| Schedule | Earliest date, delivery window, load sequence, and rescheduling terms | A lower quote may not work if it misses the placement or paving schedule. |
| Delivery radius and access | Service-area confirmation, truck type, site restrictions, and unloading method | The supplier must be able to reach and safely unload at your site. |
| Pickup option | Yard location, minimum pickup quantity, loading hours, and vehicle requirements | Pickup can reduce freight for small orders but may add handling or equipment needs. |
| Documentation | Approval status, test data, quality-control records, and delivery-ticket format | Missing records can delay acceptance even when the physical material is suitable. |
Ask each supplier to state whether the quote is firm for a defined period and whether taxes or surcharges can change before delivery. Record the salesperson’s name, quote date, product code, and any assumptions about access or load size. If one quote is materially lower, ask what differs before treating it as a bargain.
Prepare the site before scheduling delivery
Aggregate is heavy, and a delivery truck can damage an unprepared surface or become stuck. Confirm where the load will be placed and how it will be moved after unloading.
- Mark the unloading area and keep people, vehicles, and equipment clear.
- Check overhead wires, tree limbs, roof edges, gates, and other clearance hazards.
- Verify that the approach can support the expected truck weight in current weather.
- Protect drains, utility covers, retaining walls, curbs, and finished surfaces.
- Arrange equipment for spreading or stockpiling if the delivery leaves a large pile.
- Plan for rain and runoff so fines or muddy water do not enter drains or neighboring property.
Ask the supplier whether the driver can place the material in one pile, windrow it, or make multiple drops. The available unloading method may determine how much site preparation and handling equipment you need.
Recognize common mistakes and warning signs
Choosing by distance alone
The nearest pin may not be the nearest operating sales point, and a farther supplier may offer a lower delivered total because it can combine loads or has the required grade in stock. Compare complete quotes from the actual dispatch location.
Assuming a directory is current
Government maps and commercial listings can remain online after a facility changes hours, products, ownership, or operating status. Verify the address, phone number, product, and delivery terms directly.

Ordering before confirming gradation
“Stone,” “gravel,” and “sand” are broad descriptions. A load can be clean and attractive yet fail a drainage, compaction, concrete, or pavement requirement. Put the exact product description on the quote and delivery ticket.
Ignoring minimums and access charges
A small order may trigger a minimum-load fee, while a difficult site may require a smaller truck or extra handling. Ask for these costs before comparing suppliers.
Failing to document the delivery
Keep the quote, order confirmation, delivery ticket, source information, and any test or approval documents. Photograph the stockpile and note the delivery date if the material will be tested or inspected later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Define the requirement. Copy the project’s aggregate description, size or gradation, quantity, delivery address, and required date.
- Open the FHWA state index. Select the delivery state and follow its links to producer lists, maps, source inventories, or approved-material resources.
- Search the state DOT tool. Filter by county, region, material, or facility type where the tool allows it. Save several plausible suppliers.
- Expand the list locally. Search for aggregate suppliers, quarries, pits, bulk sand and gravel yards, and delivery services near the project.
- Call with one consistent brief. Ask about exact material, gradation, quantity, stock, delivery, minimums, pickup, and documentation.
- Verify project acceptance. Check the owner’s or agency’s approval and testing requirements before accepting a substitution.
- Collect written quotes. Require material identity, quantity, delivered total, schedule, assumptions, and extra charges in writing.
- Compare equivalent delivered offers. Resolve differences in units, load sizes, freight, and documentation before selecting a supplier.
- Confirm the appointment. Reconfirm stock, truck access, unloading location, weather plan, and contact details shortly before delivery.
- Inspect and retain records. Check the product against the order, keep tickets and documents, and report a discrepancy promptly.
When no nearby supplier appears
Expand the search radius gradually and ask local contractors, ready-mix producers, asphalt plants, and trucking companies which aggregate yards actually deliver to your area. A supplier may not advertise retail service but may sell through a carrier or local building-material yard. Confirm who is responsible for the material specification, who bills the freight, and where the load originates.
If the required grade is unavailable, do not silently replace it with a visually similar product. Ask the project’s responsible professional whether an alternative is acceptable and obtain the approval in writing. For a private, non-engineered job, compare the supplier’s recommended alternative with the original intended use and understand the performance trade-off before ordering.
What a good final choice looks like
The best local supplier is not simply the one with the lowest advertised price or shortest driving distance. It is the supplier that can provide the specified material in the required quantity, deliver safely within the project schedule, document the source or quality information when required, and state the complete cost clearly. The FHWA index and state DOT tools help you find credible leads; direct verification and an apples-to-apples delivered quote turn those leads into a defensible purchase decision.
