If your Airbnb host says they can’t accommodate your reservation, don’t cancel it on the host’s behalf. Ask the host to cancel, contact Airbnb through the reservation, and search nearby hotels or other lodging at the same time. Before you book a backup, confirm it is available for your dates and compare the full price, location, check-in arrangements, occupancy rules, and cancellation terms.
First, confirm what happened to your reservation
Check your Airbnb itinerary, cancellation notice, and message thread to see whether the host or you canceled and whether the stay is before or after check-in. If the host says they cannot host you, ask them to initiate the cancellation. Airbnb advises guests not to cancel for a host who cannot accommodate the stay; if the host is pressuring you to cancel, contact Airbnb support instead. Keep the messages and any cancellation notice so you have a record of what happened. Airbnb’s cancellation guidance explains the process.

Contact Airbnb and ask what options apply
Open the reservation in Airbnb and use its help or support option. Explain when you need to check in, how many people need accommodation, your location and accessibility needs, any essential amenities, and your maximum budget. Ask which refund or rebooking options apply to this reservation before you commit to a replacement.
Airbnb says it may help guests find a similar place, and its help article states: “You can also contact us to get help finding a similar place to stay.” Similarity is based on factors including location, amenities, availability, and comparable price. That is an offer of assistance, not a guarantee that a suitable place will be available or that Airbnb will cover a price difference. Its Rebooking and Refund Policy for Homes says assistance and refunds depend on the circumstances and availability, and Airbnb may—but is not obligated to—pay or contribute toward new accommodation.

Choose between rebooking credit and a refund
For a host cancellation of a home reservation before check-in, Airbnb says you can receive a full refund, including service fees, if you choose not to rebook. Eligible guests may be offered booking credit for immediate rebooking. If that credit is unused after 72 hours, Airbnb says it is automatically refunded; guests who are not eligible for credit receive a refund immediately. A refund being initiated does not mean the money is instantly available: the time it takes to reach you depends on your bank or other financial institution. These terms apply to the host-cancellation situation described here; personal cancellations and other booking types can follow different rules. Check Airbnb’s current host-cancellation guidance for your reservation.
Search for a backup while Airbnb responds
Because support does not guarantee replacement accommodation, search in parallel rather than waiting to begin. Look at hotels, motels, serviced apartments, and other available rentals for the same dates. Widen the map only as far as your transport, work, or other plans allow, and check whether you can reach the property at your actual arrival time.

- Confirm availability: Make sure the provider can accommodate your exact dates and party size. A search result is not a confirmed booking.
- Check arrival logistics: Verify the check-in deadline, late-arrival process, access instructions, and whether the front desk or host will be available.
- Compare the full cost: Check the final total, including taxes and fees, rather than comparing headline nightly rates. Set a ceiling you can afford if Airbnb does not contribute to the new booking.
- Check fit and location: Confirm occupancy limits, essential amenities, accessibility, and distance to the places or transit you need.
- Read the cancellation terms: Confirm the refund rules and deadline for canceling before you pay. Save the provider’s booking confirmation and support details.
These checks are practical precautions for any short-notice lodging search; Airbnb does not guarantee external hotel or rental accommodation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A cancellation before check-in is different from a problem with a reservation already underway. For a covered Reservation Issue, Airbnb’s policy says the guest who booked should contact Airbnb or the host within 72 hours after discovering the issue. Send relevant evidence, such as photos, video, or the host’s confirmation, where applicable. The policy says a possible remedy may include a partial or full refund or rebooking assistance; the outcome depends on factors such as the issue’s severity and impact, how much of the stay is affected, whether you leave, mitigating circumstances, and the evidence provided. Read the policy details and report the issue promptly.
