How to Find a Company’s Registrar and Transfer Agent for Share Transfers

To find the registrar or transfer agent for a particular company, start with that company’s official website. Open Investor Relations and look for Shareholder Services, Stock Information, Investor FAQs, or the shareholder-information section of its annual report. Search the page for “transfer agent,” “registrar,” “share registrar,” or “shareholder services.”

If the name or contact route is not published, contact the issuer’s investor-relations or shareholder-relations team and ask for the current transfer agent’s name and official contact details. The correct agent is issuer-specific; never assume that an agent used by another company handles your shares.

What a registrar or transfer agent does

A transfer agent maintains an issuer’s security-holder records and processes changes in ownership. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission also lists certificate issuance and cancellation and dividend distribution among transfer-agent functions. In some markets, the same provider is called a registrar, share registrar, or shareholder-services provider.

The appointment belongs to the issuing company. There is no single transfer agent for all shares, and the agent can change when an issuer changes service providers. That is why a current issuer source is more reliable than an old form, an unrelated company’s website, or a general internet directory.

In the United States, the SEC explains the role and lookup process in its Investor.gov transfer-agent guide. It says that most issuers identify their transfer agent under the “Investor Relations” tab and that an investor may need to contact the company directly for the agent’s name and contact information.

Registrar, transfer agent, and shareholder services: what the labels mean

Companies do not use one universal label. A page may identify a provider as the registrar, stock transfer agent, share registrar, transfer agent and registrar, or shareholder-services contact. In India, the common label is Registrar to an Issue and Share Transfer Agent, abbreviated RTA or STA. These terms can appear in different sections of the same issuer’s website, so search more than one phrase.

The label alone does not prove that a provider handles every security connected with the company. A company may have several share classes, debt securities, or historical records from a merger. Read the wording next to the provider’s name and confirm that it covers your issuer and security. If the page is ambiguous, ask investor relations rather than choosing an agent based on name recognition.

How to find a company’s transfer agent

  1. Identify the issuer precisely. Use the company name exactly as it appears on your certificate, statement, dividend advice, corporate-action notice, or other shareholder document. Check the legal issuer name if the business has similarly named subsidiaries, multiple share classes, or a recent merger.
  2. Open the company’s official website. Use a site address you already trust or reach the company through a verified filing or investor document. Do not rely on a search-result snippet alone; it may show an outdated agent or a different company with a similar name.
  3. Open Investor Relations. Common menu labels include “Investor Relations,” “Investors,” “Stock Information,” or “Shareholder Information.”
  4. Inspect the shareholder-service pages. Look for “Shareholder Services,” “Stock Information,” “Investor FAQs,” “Shareholder FAQ,” “Transfer Agent,” or “Registrar.” The information may also be in the shareholder-information section of the latest annual report.
  5. Search within the page or PDF. Use your browser’s find command for transfer agent, registrar, share registrar, shareholder services, and, where relevant, RTA or STA.
  6. Record the full match. Note the agent’s legal name, the issuer or share class it serves, the official website or portal, mailing address, telephone number, and any reference to registered shareholders or dividend services.
  7. Confirm that the information is current. Check the page’s date, the latest annual report, and any notice of a change in registrar or transfer agent. If two official documents disagree, ask the issuer which contact route is current.

Where companies publish the information

Location What to look for Why it helps
Investor Relations website “Transfer Agent,” “Registrar,” “Shareholder Services,” or “Stock Information” Usually the quickest issuer-approved lookup route.
Investor FAQ Questions about registered shares, certificates, dividends, address changes, or ownership records May identify the agent and link to its shareholder portal.
Annual report Shareholder-information, investor-contact, or transfer-agent section Useful when the website navigation is unclear; verify the document’s date.
Issuer contact page Investor-relations or shareholder-relations email, telephone number, or form Provides a fallback when no agent is named publicly.

Terminology varies by country and issuer. Searching only for “transfer agent” can miss a page headed “Registrar” or “Shareholder Services,” so use several terms.

What to do when the website does not name an agent

Contact the issuer directly rather than guessing. Use the investor-relations or shareholder-relations contact details published on the company’s official website or in its current annual report. Ask a focused question such as:

“Please provide the name and official contact route for the current registrar or transfer agent for my [company name] shares, including the relevant share class if applicable.”

Give enough information for the company to identify the security, but do not email sensitive identity documents or account credentials until you have confirmed the official submission channel. A company may direct you to a particular shareholder portal, form, or department; follow that route rather than using an address found on an unrelated website.

If the issuer has recently merged, changed its name, delisted, or reorganized, mention the former name and the date or document on which it appears. The records may have moved to a successor issuer or service provider, and the issuer’s investor-relations team is the appropriate place to confirm that transition.

How to verify that the agent matches your shares

Finding a company name on an agent’s website is not enough. Before submitting a transfer request, compare the issuer’s official information with the details on your documents.

  • Match the issuer’s legal name, not just a brand or trading name.
  • Match the security or share class shown on your certificate or statement.
  • Check whether the instructions apply to registered holders, certificated shares, or another category.
  • Use the telephone number, postal address, and web link supplied by the issuer, or reach the agent through a link on the issuer’s site.
  • Ask the issuer if an old document names a different agent.

This verification is particularly important because agents are appointed by individual issuers and named providers can change. An agent identified by one company does not automatically serve another company.

Registered shares versus broker-held or nominee-held shares

The issuer’s transfer-agent process is most directly relevant when you are the registered holder recorded on the issuer’s books. If your shares are held through a broker, bank, custodian, or nominee, the account relationship may be handled through that intermediary instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your statement to determine how the holding is recorded. Then ask the broker or custodian which process applies before sending a transfer form to the issuer’s agent. Do not assume that a registered-holder form, certificate procedure, address-change request, or ownership-transfer instruction applies to a broker-held position. The exact process depends on the intermediary, jurisdiction, security, and type of request.

If you are unsure, ask both parties a narrowly framed question: “Is this holding registered directly in my name, or is it held through your nominee or custody arrangement, and who must receive my transfer request?” Keep the response and any reference number with your records.

What to check before sending a form or certificate

Identifying the correct provider is only the lookup step. Read the provider’s current instructions before completing a transfer, title-change, duplicate-certificate, or other service request. The instructions should tell you whether the request is for registered holders, certificated holdings, or another category and which official delivery channel to use.

Compare the web address, telephone number, postal address, and company name with the details published by the issuer. Be cautious if an unsolicited email, social-media account, or directory asks for identity documents, passwords, payment, or a certificate. Confirm the route with investor relations first. Do not send original documents until the issuer-confirmed instructions say where they belong, and retain copies and any tracking or reference information.

Fees, document requirements, and submission methods are not universal. The issuer’s page identifies the appointed provider, but the provider’s current instructions control the particular service. Ask the provider or issuer to explain any applicable charge or required document instead of relying on a fee quoted on an old form.

Information to have ready

Once you have confirmed the correct agent, prepare only the information the official process requests. Depending on the jurisdiction and service, you may need:

  • The issuer’s exact legal name and the security or share class.
  • Your name as it appears in the registered ownership record.
  • Certificate, account, or holder-reference numbers shown on official documents.
  • Your current mailing address and any required address history.
  • Details of the requested change, such as a transfer, title correction, duplicate certificate, dematerialisation, or rematerialisation.
  • Supporting identity, legal, tax, or probate documents where the official instructions require them.

Do not send documents merely because an unofficial directory, email, or social-media account requests them. Use the issuer-confirmed portal, postal address, or telephone channel, and retain copies of what you submit.

United States: transfer-agent terminology and oversight

For U.S. securities, the SEC describes transfer agents as maintaining issuer security-holder records. The SEC’s overview explains that transfer agents generally register with the SEC, while certain bank transfer agents are overseen through the appropriate banking regulator. The relevant bank regulators can include the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Federal Reserve, or the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, depending on the institution and its activities. These regulatory details explain the industry’s framework; an investor normally does not need to determine an agent’s registration category simply to locate the issuer’s appointed contact.

The SEC also publishes aggregate transfer-agent data. Its statistics page reports 327 registered transfer agents as of June 30, 2026, counting SEC-registered and bank-registered agents. The SEC cautions that the figures are produced from EDGAR filings, may change when data or methodology are updated or revised, and are not a substitute for reviewing relevant filings. The total is context about the size of the industry, not a directory that identifies the agent for a particular company.

India: registrar and transfer agent (RTA/STA) terminology

Indian listed companies commonly use the terms Registrar to an Issue and Share Transfer Agent (RTA/STA) or an in-house share department. SEBI’s FAQ says that an investor should approach a SEBI-registered RTA/STA or the listed company for a service request relating to securities of a listed company. Where the company has an in-house share department, the investor should approach that department.

SEBI’s listed examples of RTA or share-department services include:

  • Updating KYC details for physical holdings.
  • Changing title or ownership records.
  • Requesting duplicate securities.
  • Dematerialising or rematerialising securities.

These instructions are specific to the Indian listed-company context. They should not be treated as a universal process for companies in the United States or other jurisdictions. Read the current issuer instructions and SEBI’s RTA/STA FAQ before sending a service request.

Illustrative issuer examples—and why they are only examples

Issuer pages demonstrate the kinds of labels and locations you may encounter. Target’s 2025 annual-report shareholder-information page identifies EQ Shareowner Services in its section covering the transfer agent, registrar, and dividend-disbursing agent. General Motors’ stock-information page identifies Computershare Trust Company, N.A. as its registrar and stock transfer agent. S&P Global’s investor FAQ identifies Computershare as its transfer agent and explains that it maintains records for registered shareholders.

These examples show how companies publish the information; they do not establish which provider serves any other issuer. Treat every named agent as an issuer-specific, time-sensitive fact and verify it on the company’s current official page before using the contact details.

Troubleshooting common lookup problems

The website has no Investor Relations link

Look for “Investors,” “Financial Information,” “Corporate Governance,” “Shareholders,” or “Stock Information.” If none appears, use the official contact page and ask for investor relations or shareholder services. A current annual report can also reveal the correct department.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The annual report names an agent but the website names another

Check the publication dates. An annual report may describe the arrangement during an earlier reporting period. Contact the issuer and ask which agent is current for your security and share class.

The agent’s website lists several issuers with similar names

Match the issuer’s legal name, share class, and the wording on your document. If the match is still unclear, confirm it with the issuer before entering personal information.

The company has changed its name or merged

Search Investor Relations under both the current and former names, then contact the successor issuer’s investor-relations team. Provide the former name and the date on your document so the team can trace the record.

You hold a physical certificate but cannot find an online account

Use the issuer’s shareholder-services instructions for certificated or registered holders. Ask the issuer to confirm the appointed agent and the acceptable delivery method before mailing the certificate or any identity documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You hold shares through a broker

Ask the broker or custodian whether it, rather than the issuer’s transfer agent, must process the request. Do not use a direct-registration form solely because you found it on the issuer’s website.

A quick decision path

  1. Do you know the issuer? If not, identify it from your certificate, statement, or official notice.
  2. Does its official Investor Relations site name a registrar or transfer agent? If yes, verify the issuer and security match, then use the published route.
  3. Is the information missing or outdated? Contact investor relations or shareholder services and request the current agent’s official details.
  4. Are the shares broker-held or nominee-held? Ask the broker or custodian which procedure applies before contacting the issuer’s agent.
  5. Are you in India with a listed company? Follow the issuer’s instructions for its SEBI-registered RTA/STA or in-house share department.

The reliable answer to “Who is the registrar for my shares?” is therefore the agent identified by your issuer’s current official information, confirmed for your security and holding arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a company’s transfer agent?

Go to the company’s official website, open Investor Relations or Shareholder Services, and search for “transfer agent,” “registrar,” or “shareholder services.” If no name appears, contact investor relations and request the current agent’s official contact route.

Who is the registrar for my shares?

It is the provider identified by your issuer’s current official shareholder or investor information for your particular security. Confirm the legal issuer name and share class; an agent serving another company may not serve yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I find the company’s share transfer agent?

Check the issuer’s Investor Relations page, Stock Information page, Investor FAQ, or the shareholder-information section of its latest annual report. The issuer’s official contact page is the fallback.

Who do I contact to transfer shares held through a broker?

Ask the broker, bank, custodian, or nominee which process applies. Broker-held positions may not use the issuer’s registered-holder forms, so confirm the recipient before submitting anything.

Is a transfer agent the same as a registrar?

Issuers often use those labels for the same shareholder-record and transfer service, but terminology varies. Read the issuer’s wording and verify that the named provider covers your security.

What if an old certificate names a different agent?

Compare the certificate date with the issuer’s current Investor Relations information and latest annual report. Contact the issuer to confirm whether the agent changed and which official route is current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does an Indian listed-company investor do?

Follow the issuer’s instructions for its SEBI-registered RTA/STA or in-house share department. SEBI lists services such as KYC updates for physical holdings, ownership changes, duplicate securities, dematerialisation, and rematerialisation.

How can I avoid sending documents to the wrong party?

Use contact details published by the issuer or a link from its official website. Confirm the issuer, share class, and holding type before submitting identity documents, certificates, or account information.

The Bottom Line

Start with the issuer’s current official Investor Relations or shareholder-information page. Search several labels, verify the legal issuer and security, and contact the issuer directly when the agent is missing or outdated. If the shares are broker-held, ask the intermediary which procedure applies; if the company is an Indian listed issuer, follow its SEBI-registered RTA/STA or in-house share department instructions.
