Use three official records together: the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for tribunal case history, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) for corporate-insolvency and liquidation announcements, and eCourts for an additional party- or case-based search. Start with the strongest identifier you have, then verify the result against its date, case history, order, or announcement. A blank result on one portal does not prove that no proceeding exists.

What “insolvency status” means in an online search

People commonly ask whether a company is “bankrupt,” but Indian official records may describe the matter using terms such as Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP), liquidation, voluntary liquidation, petition, interim order, judgment, or associated application. These labels identify different records or stages. A public announcement is not the same document as a tribunal order, and a case-status screen is not necessarily the latest event in a proceeding.

For a dependable answer, identify the company precisely, find the relevant record, and read the dated document or case history behind the search result. If you are checking a supplier, employer, lender, investor, or customer, preserve the result and the underlying document together so that someone else can reproduce your check.

Quick answers to the searches people actually make

How to check company insolvency status in India?

Start with the exact corporate debtor name in the IBBI public-announcement listing. If you find a notice, use its date, applicant, insolvency professional, process type, and any case identifier to locate the matter in NCLT Case History. If no number is available, use eCourts with the company as petitioner or respondent and then inspect View or Case History. Confirm the identity and dates before describing the result as current.

How do I check whether a company is under CIRP?

Look for an IBBI announcement categorized for the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process, then check the related NCLT case and later orders. The announcement shows that a public notice was recorded on a particular date; it does not by itself prove that CIRP remains the latest procedural position.

How to find an NCLT case by company name?

The NCLT case-number page is designed around bench, case type, CP number, and year rather than a universal company-name index. If you only have a name, search IBBI or eCourts first for a case number, bench, filing number, or party spelling, then return to NCLT using those identifiers.

How to check a company liquidation case status?

Search IBBI for the corporate debtor and inspect whether the announcement is a voluntary-liquidation notice or another public-announcement category. Then check NCLT Case History for the identified matter and read the dated orders. Keep the announcement and tribunal record separate in your notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I find an NCLT case number or case history?

Use the company name and notice details to search IBBI, or use eCourts by party, filing number, advocate, act type, or case type. Once a likely matter is found, record its bench, CP number, case type, and year and use the NCLT Case History option.

Choose the official route that matches the identifier you have

Official route Best use What you enter or inspect Important limitation
NCLT case-number search and Case History Tracking a known tribunal matter, hearings, orders, judgments, and associated applications Bench, case type, CP number, and year; then Case History The case-number page uses a CAPTCHA and is not described as a universal company-name index.
IBBI public announcements Finding public notices connected with CIRP or voluntary liquidation Corporate debtor name, announcement type and date, applicant, insolvency professional, and the linked notice An announcement records that notice; it does not necessarily show the latest development in the tribunal case.
eCourts case status An additional search when you know a party, filing, case, advocate, FIR, act, or case type Party name of at least three characters and registration year, or another supported identifier; choose pending, disposed, or both State, district, or court selections may be required, and the search uses a CAPTCHA. A general party-name search should not be treated as an exhaustive NCLT index.

Use NCLT first when you have the bench and case number. Use IBBI when you know the corporate debtor but not the tribunal number. Use eCourts when a party name or another case identifier gives you a second search path. For an important conclusion, use at least two routes and inspect the underlying record.

These portals answer different questions. NCLT is primarily a tribunal-record route, IBBI is a public-notice route, and eCourts is a court-service search route. The best starting point depends on whether your strongest clue is a CP number and bench, a debtor name, or a party and registration year. No single interface should be presented as a complete index of every insolvency-related event.

Gather the right company and case identifiers

Before opening a search page, collect the exact corporate debtor name as it appears in a filing or public announcement. Trading names, abbreviations, punctuation, and changed legal names can produce misleading matches. Record the following where available:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The full legal name of the corporate debtor.
  • The registered or commonly used spelling in the notice or petition.
  • The NCLT bench, such as the tribunal location handling the matter.
  • The case type, CP number, and year.
  • Any filing number, party name, advocate name, act type, or case type used by eCourts.
  • The date and PDF or web address of any order, notice, or public announcement already found.

Keep the identifier exactly as printed. A CP number without its year, or a company name without its legal suffix, may be insufficient to distinguish similarly named parties.

Make a small identifier sheet before searching. Put the legal name in one column, alternate spellings in another, and each number with its year and source. This prevents a result for a similarly named entity from being copied into the wrong file. If a notice uses one spelling and a court entry uses another, retain both spellings and explain the difference rather than silently normalizing them.

How to check a known NCLT case

1. Open the NCLT case-number search

Use the official NCLT case-number page when you know the tribunal bench and case reference. Enter the required bench, case type, CP number, and year. Complete the CAPTCHA and submit the search.

Check every field before submitting. A correct CP number paired with the wrong bench or year can look like a missing case. Save the result with the date on which you viewed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Open the case record, not just the matching line

Read the case details and compare the corporate debtor’s name with your source document. Look for the filing parties, case number, bench, and dates. If multiple matters appear, do not assume they concern the same insolvency process merely because the company name is similar.

3. Use Case History when status or document search is difficult

The NCLT page specifically identifies Case History as an alternative for tracking case status and viewing hearing lists, interim orders, judgments, and associated applications. Its wording is: “Please check "Case History", an alternative option to Track case status, View List of Hearings, Interim Orders, Judgement, Associated Applications etc., if facing any problem while using case status or judgement search.”

Open the entries in date order. Note the latest visible hearing, order, or judgment, but do not call it the current status unless the record itself supplies a date and a clear procedural event. Download or retain the linked order where available.

4. Record what the result actually proves

An NCLT result establishes that the searched case record is present in that tribunal system. It can show hearings, interim orders, judgments, and associated applications. It does not, by itself, establish that every other proceeding involving the company has been found or that a later event has not occurred elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Read associated applications carefully

An associated application may relate to the main petition but can have its own number, parties, order, and date. Record whether an entry is the principal case, an interim application, a hearing listing, or a judgment. This distinction matters when a later application changes what can responsibly be said about the proceeding.

How to search IBBI public announcements by company name

1. Search the corporate debtor name

Open the IBBI public-announcement listing and search using the corporate debtor’s exact name. Try the legal name from a notice first. If the name has punctuation or a suffix, use the form displayed in the filing and then check carefully for spelling variants.

2. Filter and read the announcement fields

For each match, inspect the announcement type, announcement date, applicant, insolvency professional, and the linked notice. The listing includes categories for Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process and voluntary-liquidation announcements.

3. Open the linked notice

Read the notice rather than relying on the search-result summary. Confirm the corporate debtor’s identity, notice date, process described, and contact or submission instructions shown in the document. Preserve the notice because it is evidence of the announcement recorded on that date.

4. Do not treat the announcement as a live case dashboard

An IBBI notice documents an announcement. It may not reflect a later hearing, interim order, judgment, resolution, or change in the tribunal matter. After finding a notice, use its identifiers to search NCLT Case History and, where useful, eCourts. Compare the dates before describing the company as currently under a particular process.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

5. Distinguish announcement date from event date

Write down both the date shown in the listing and any different date stated in the linked notice. A notice may describe a process event that occurred earlier or provide a deadline tied to the notice. Your report should say exactly which date you are citing and whether it is the publication date or a procedural date in the document.

How to use eCourts when the NCLT number is missing

1. Select a supported search method

The eCourts case-status service offers searches by petitioner or respondent, case number, filing number, advocate, FIR number, act type, and case type. Choose the method that matches the information in your document. Party-name search is useful when you know the company or another named party but do not have the CP number.

2. Run a party-name search correctly

  1. Enter at least three characters of the petitioner or respondent name.
  2. Enter the registration year required by the form.
  3. Select the relevant state, district, or court details where the interface asks for them.
  4. Choose Pending, Disposed, or Both.
  5. When you do not know the status, select Both. The eCourts instruction says: “If you don’t know the exact status of the Case, then click on the Both option button.”
  6. Complete the CAPTCHA and submit.

3. Open View or Case History

Review each result’s parties, case number, registration year, court information, and dates. Select View or Case History to inspect the entries behind the result. Compare the company’s legal identity with the NCLT or IBBI document you are checking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Understand what eCourts adds

eCourts supplies another case-search path and can expose a record when you know a party or filing identifier. It is a court-service status interface, not a guarantee that every insolvency-related record appears in one party-name search. Use it as corroboration or as a way to discover a case number, then verify the matter in the relevant tribunal history.

5. Avoid overbroad name matches

A three-character search can return many parties. Narrow the results with the registration year, court details, party role, and case information. Do not attach a proceeding to the company merely because one word in the name matches. Confirm the complete party name and other details in View or Case History.

How to cross-check a company’s status before relying on it

Use this sequence whenever the result could affect payment, contracting, employment, lending, or investment:

  1. Match the identity. Compare the complete corporate debtor name, parties, and any identifying details across the result and the underlying notice or order.
  2. Match the case. Confirm the bench, case type, CP number, filing number, or registration year rather than relying on a name alone.
  3. Read the dates. Separate the announcement date, filing or registration date, hearing date, and date of the latest order you can see.
  4. Classify the record. Mark whether it is an IBBI public announcement, NCLT case history entry, interim order, judgment, or eCourts status result.
  5. Check later events. Use NCLT Case History after finding an IBBI notice, and use eCourts when an additional party or filing search is available.
  6. Save the evidence. Retain the URL or document, the viewing date, search terms, and screenshots or downloaded orders in your due-diligence file.

Only after these checks should you write a conclusion such as “a CIRP announcement was published on [date]” or “the NCLT case history shows an order dated [date].” Avoid converting a dated record into an undated claim that the company is still in that status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When records conflict, do not select the more convenient label. List the conflicting dates and record types, then seek the later order or professional interpretation. A notice can remain searchable after a tribunal event has changed the position, while a case-status line may not explain the legal effect of an order.

What the official searches cost

The core lookup is served by free official government portals: NCLT, IBBI public announcements, and eCourts. You do not need to buy a book, device, generic software, or paid product to run the searches described here. If a commercial service offers a consolidated report, treat it as an optional convenience and verify every material statement against the underlying official record.

There may be practical costs in obtaining professional advice or interpreting an order, but those are separate from searching the portals. For a consequential decision, budget for qualified Indian insolvency or legal advice rather than assuming that a search result alone answers the commercial question.

How to preserve a reproducible search file

For each check, save the portal name, full search terms, selected filters, viewing date, result identifiers, and the linked notice or order. A screenshot can show what appeared on the day of the search, while the downloaded document preserves the text that supported your conclusion. Keep the original file name and do not overwrite an earlier version when a later search produces a different result.

Write a short finding and a separate limitations note. For example, state that IBBI displayed a voluntary-liquidation announcement dated a particular day, then separately state that the NCLT history was or was not located and what its latest visible entry was. This makes clear which point is documented and which point remains unresolved.

How to interpret common outcomes

A matching IBBI announcement but no obvious NCLT result

Check the notice for the applicant, process type, date, and any case identifier. Re-run the NCLT search with the correct bench, case type, CP number, and year. A notice and tribunal record are different systems and may use different identifiers.

An NCLT case with no IBBI announcement

Read the case history and identify what event the case represents. Not every tribunal search result is necessarily the particular public announcement you are seeking. Do not infer a CIRP or liquidation status from the company name alone.

An eCourts result with a similar company name

Compare parties, location, year, and case details. Similar names can belong to different legal entities. If the identity cannot be established, label the match as unconfirmed rather than attaching the proceeding to the company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No result anywhere

A no-result search is inconclusive. Recheck spelling, legal suffixes, year, bench, case type, and the three-character minimum for eCourts. Try the other official routes and search using a party, filing, or case identifier from the available paperwork. None of these interfaces is described as a complete index of every relevant matter.

A page fails, times out, or shows a CAPTCHA error

Reload the official page, enter the fields again, and ensure the CAPTCHA is completed as displayed. If a case-status or judgment screen is difficult to use, use the NCLT Case History option identified on the page. Record the date and the exact search attempted so that a later check can distinguish a technical failure from a genuine no-result.

The portal shows an old entry but no recent order

Report the latest dated entry you can actually see and state that the portal did not display a later event in that search. Do not fill the gap with an assumption that the earlier status continues. Recheck the other official route and obtain the underlying order when the decision is important.

What to write in a status report

A useful internal note distinguishes evidence from interpretation. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The company’s exact legal name and any alternate spelling searched.
  • The portal used and the search fields entered.
  • The case number, bench, year, or party identifier returned.
  • The record type: announcement, hearing entry, interim order, judgment, or case-status result.
  • The document or event date and the date you performed the search.
  • A cautious conclusion limited to what the record says.

For example, “IBBI lists a voluntary-liquidation announcement for [company name] dated [date]; NCLT Case History was checked for the identified bench and case reference, and the latest visible entry is dated [date]” is more defensible than simply writing “the company is bankrupt.” Replace bracketed wording with the actual names and dates in your own report; do not leave variables in a published record.

If you cannot establish the identity or locate a later order, say so explicitly: “Possible match; identity not confirmed” or “No result found in the searched interfaces as of [date].” These formulations accurately describe the scope of the check without turning an incomplete search into a legal conclusion.

Freshness and legal-use cautions

Official portals and their labels can change, and live case data can be updated after you search. The pages and listings checked for this guide were reviewed on October 13, 2026; re-open the official records when making a current decision. A portal result is evidence to investigate, not a substitute for reading the order or obtaining professional advice about its legal effect.

If the result affects a contract, recovery action, investment, employment decision, or enforcement step, have a qualified Indian insolvency professional or lawyer interpret the underlying documents. The search workflow can locate records; it cannot determine the commercial or legal consequence of every order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which portal should I use first if I only know the company name?

Start with the IBBI public-announcement listing, then use any case details you find to search NCLT Case History. eCourts is an additional route when you can search the company as a petitioner or respondent.

Does an IBBI announcement prove that the company is currently in CIRP or liquidation?

No. It proves that the listed announcement was recorded on its stated date. Check NCLT Case History and later orders before describing the current procedural position.

Can I find an NCLT matter using only a company name?

The NCLT case-number page requires a bench, case type, CP number, and year and is not described as a universal company-name index. Use IBBI or eCourts to discover those identifiers first.

What should I select in eCourts if I do not know whether a case is pending?

Select Both. The eCourts instruction specifically directs users who do not know the exact status to choose the Both option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many characters are required for an eCourts party-name search?

At least three characters, along with the registration year and any required state, district, or court selections.

Is a blank search result proof that no insolvency case exists?

No. Recheck spelling, year, bench, case type, and identifiers, then search the other official routes. The interfaces contain different record types and are not stated to be complete indexes of every matter.

Are these official searches free?

The NCLT, IBBI public-announcement, and eCourts lookup routes described here are free official government portals. Professional interpretation of an order is a separate service.

What evidence should I save for a due-diligence file?

Save the search terms, selected fields, viewing date, result identifiers, screenshots or downloaded orders, and the linked IBBI notice. Keep the record type and event date separate from your interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use the identifier you have: NCLT for a known bench and case number, IBBI for debtor-name public announcements, and eCourts for party- or case-based searching. Verify the company identity, compare dates, open the underlying notice or order, and record exactly what the result proves. A no-result or old listing is not a definitive statement of present insolvency status.
