A 120Hz TV under $1,000 can be a good fit for gaming, but the refresh-rate label alone is not enough to identify one—or prove it is within budget. Check the exact model and screen size for native refresh rate, 4K/120Hz input support, VRR, and ALLM, then verify a current U.S. price for that same size. The official product information available here does not establish a price-verified U.S. shortlist, so the examples below are useful for checking specifications, not confirmed under-budget picks.
How to verify a TV is really 120Hz
Look for the manufacturer’s stated native refresh rate in the specifications for the exact model and screen size. Do not treat a motion-rate number as an equivalent measure: Hisense’s 2022 U75H specification sheet, for example, describes a native 120Hz panel and separately uses the term “480 motion rate.” That older example illustrates why the native rate should be confirmed directly; it is not a current buying recommendation. Also check what signal the TV accepts. A set’s native panel rate and its ability to accept 4K at 120Hz through the input you plan to use are separate specifications. For a gaming setup, confirm 4K/120Hz support on the relevant HDMI inputs, rather than assuming every input has the same capabilities.
Which gaming features should you check?
- 4K/120Hz input support: Confirm it for the HDMI port your console or PC will use.
- VRR: Variable refresh rate can help synchronize the display with a compatible gaming device.
- ALLM: Auto Low Latency Mode can switch the TV to a low-latency setting when compatible equipment is detected.
- Port availability: If you have more than one gaming device, verify how many inputs support the features you need.
Do not assume a manufacturer applies the same HDMI features across its whole lineup. Sony’s model-series table, last modified September 29, 2026, lists 4K/120, VRR, and ALLM for 2025 Bravia 5, while marking those features absent for Bravia 3 and Bravia 2 II. A useful technical example: LG QNED85AUA, 55-inch
LG Canada lists the 55-inch QNED85AUA (2025) as a 4K QNED MiniLED TV with native 120Hz support and HDMI features including 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, and QMS. LG’s size notes distinguish the 55- and 50-inch versions, which support 120Hz, from larger listed sizes, which support up to 144Hz. This is a strong example of why both model and screen size matter when reading specifications.
It is not a verified under-$1,000 U.S. pick: the cited product page is Canadian and does not establish a current U.S. selling price. How to confirm the TV fits a $1,000 budget
- Identify the precise model and screen size. A family name is not enough when refresh-rate capabilities can vary by size.
- Open the official specification page. Confirm native refresh rate and 4K/120Hz input support for that version.
- Check gaming features and ports. Verify VRR, ALLM, and which inputs support the features your devices need.
- Check the current U.S. listing for the same size. Confirm the seller, price, availability, and any promotion or delivery conditions before treating it as within budget.
- Compare picture and room needs separately. Check panel or backlight type and supported HDR formats where specified; refresh rate alone does not establish picture quality.
Prices, promotions, stock, and product lineups can change. A technical match is not a budget match until a current listing confirms the price for the exact size and region.
