If you want to keep your current Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign, you do not have to make the urge to restart disappear—you can make continuing feel easier. Respec if you regret your build, choose one manageable goal for the next session if the story feels sprawling, and save new character ideas for a later run. And if the current campaign has stopped being fun, taking a break or starting over deliberately is valid too.
What is behind the urge to start over?
Players often call the pattern “restartitis” in community discussions. Posts describe wanting to try a fresh build, feeling dissatisfied with a Tav, losing track of a long campaign, or reaching Act Two and imagining a new character. These are individual experiences, not a diagnosis or evidence about how common the pattern is.

Before deleting or abandoning a save, name the specific trigger. The right response depends on whether you want a different build, feel pressured by difficulty, have too many quests in view, fear missing content, or are excited by a new character concept.
Match the fix to the reason you want to restart
If you regret your build, respec first
Larian says you can respec your protagonist and companions, so a build that no longer suits you does not automatically require a new campaign. There is a role-play trade-off: changing an Origin character’s class can affect dialogue and role-play options, as Larian notes in Community Update #22. Respeccing is a way to address build dissatisfaction; it cannot guarantee that every concern about a character will be solved.
#1 Best Overall
- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
If combat pressure is driving the urge, reduce the pressure where your mode allows
Custom Mode lets players shape parts of the experience. Larian also said in Community Update #25 that Honour Mode disables loading previous saves. Patch 6 allowed players who began on a set difficulty to switch to Custom Mode, but excluded Honour Mode; see the Patch 6 notes. Do not assume you can freely change modes or reload an earlier save in Honour Mode. If a setting change is not available in your run, pick a smaller in-game objective instead of treating a new character as the only escape.
If the quest list feels overwhelming, make the next session smaller
Choose one concrete stopping point: a single quest step, one location you want to explore, or a companion conversation. You can stop once you reach it and decide then whether you want another session. This is a planning tactic, not a guarantee that you will finish the campaign.

You also do not have to clear every side quest, encounter, or companion arc in one run. One player who described finishing after repeated Act Three restarts said they narrowed the party they managed and skipped optional content. That is one person’s approach, not a proven method, but it illustrates a useful option: focus on what you currently care about rather than turning the run into a completion checklist.

A campaign does not need to contain every possible scene or choice to be worthwhile. Trying to see everything can make a large game feel like an obligation. Decide which storylines matter most to this character and let the rest remain unexplored for now.

If a new Tav is taking shape in your head, save the idea
Write down the concept, class, personality, or role-play premise in a note. Treat it as a plan for a future run, not a reason you must abandon this one today. Larian describes Origins as playable heroes with their own stories and attitudes, and says its roster includes twelve hirelings, one for each class, who can also be respecced; see Community Update #21. A later playthrough can explore another perspective or party experiment.
Try a one-session contract—not a promise to finish
- Name the trigger. Write down what is making you want to restart: build regret, difficulty, too many open quests, fear of missing out, or a new character idea.
- Choose one response. Respec for build regret, use permitted difficulty options if pressure is the problem, or narrow the next session to one task if the campaign feels too broad.
- Set a stopping point. For example, play until you complete one quest step or have one companion conversation, then reassess.
- Keep the new idea. Record it somewhere outside the save so you can return to it without needing to act on it immediately.
The point is to make a deliberate choice at the end of that session, not to force yourself to keep playing. If you are no longer enjoying the campaign, pause it or choose a fresh start on purpose. Continuing is an option, not a moral obligation.

- Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
- Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
- Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
- Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.
Let a later run have its own purpose
Finishing—or simply setting aside—one campaign does not use up the game’s other role-play possibilities. Keep your saved character idea for a run with a different premise, an Origin hero, or a party composition you want to try. That gives the new concept a place without requiring it to replace the current save on impulse.
