Steam puts review filters inside the Customer reviews section of each game’s store page. You can choose which languages to read, show only positive or negative recommendations, and set a reviewer-playtime threshold. Playtime means the author’s total when the review was written, and the available thresholds can differ from one game page to another.
Open the review filters
Start on the game’s Steam store page rather than the general Community Hub. Scroll down until you reach Customer reviews. The filter controls appear around the review summary and list. Steam can change the layout or labels, so use the controls visible on the page you are viewing.

- Open the game’s store page in Steam.
- Scroll to Customer reviews.
- Choose values under Language, Review Type, and Playtime as needed.
- Check the filter summary shown above or near the review list. It should identify the active settings and report how many reviews match them.
Changing a control updates the displayed set; it does not alter the game’s overall review score or the text of any review.

Filter reviews by language
What the language setting does
Steam lets a reviewer indicate the language in which the review was written. In the Customer reviews controls, the language choices include All Languages and Your Languages. Select All Languages when you want the broadest sample, or Your Languages when you want reviews in languages associated with your Steam preferences.
Your Languages is a preference-based filter, not a translation tool. It narrows the reviews shown to languages Steam associates with your account; it does not translate reviews written in other languages. If the resulting list is small, switch to All Languages and look for reviews you can read directly or through a translation method you trust.
Steps
- In Customer reviews, locate Language.
- Select All Languages to include every language represented in the available reviews.
- Select Your Languages to use the languages associated with your Steam preferences.
- Read the updated filter summary and matching-review count before judging whether the sample is large enough.
Language filtering is useful when the same complaint may be described differently across regions, but it can also hide a large part of the conversation. If you are checking for a bug, server problem, localization issue, or regional pricing concern, begin with All Languages when possible. Then use Your Languages for a more convenient reading pass. Comparing the counts tells you how much of the discussion your preference-based view excludes.

How Steam describes language prioritization
In a May 3, 2017 announcement, Steam said its then-default view would show a summary of helpful recent reviews written by customers in languages the user speaks. The same announcement said users could choose All Languages in a game’s Community Hub reviews. Those statements describe Steam’s product behavior at that time; they should not be treated as a guarantee that every current page uses identical defaults.
Filter by recommendation type
Positive, negative, or all
The Review Type control offers All, Positive, and Negative. Choose Negative when you want to find complaints, recurring problems, or reasons players advise against buying. Choose Positive to see what supporters value. Leave it on All when you want both sides in one list.
This is a filter over the reviewer’s recommendation polarity. It is not a separate quality score, a verification badge, or Steam’s assessment of whether the review is accurate. A negative review can contain useful technical detail, and a positive review can still mention serious limitations.
Steps
- Find Review Type in the Customer reviews controls.
- Select Negative, Positive, or All.
- Confirm that the summary and matching-review count changed to reflect your choice.
For a balanced check, read a set of negative reviews first, then switch to positive reviews and look for whether the same feature or problem appears in both groups. Keep the other filters unchanged when you want that comparison to be meaningful.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen the goal is troubleshooting, do not stop after finding one negative post. Look for several reviews that describe the same symptom, hardware or operating context, and approximate date. A single recommendation label tells you how that author voted; repeated, specific descriptions provide more useful evidence about a possible issue.

Filter by the reviewer’s playtime
What Steam measures
Steam labels this control: Filter reviews by the user’s playtime when the review was written. The wording matters. The number is the reviewer’s playtime at the moment they posted the review, not necessarily their current total playtime. Someone who later played hundreds of additional hours can still have a review written after only a short initial session.
Steps
- Locate Playtime in the Customer reviews section.
- Choose the minimum-playtime option offered on that page.
- If the page provides editable minimum and maximum fields, enter the range you want and apply it using the page’s control.
- Check the summary and count to make sure the playtime rule is active.
Thresholds are page-specific
A current example store page presents No Minimum and Over 1 hour. That example does not establish a universal list for every game. Steam may expose different thresholds or fields depending on the page and interface version, so use the options actually displayed rather than assuming that a particular number will always be available.
No Minimum includes reviews regardless of the recorded playtime threshold. An option such as Over 1 hour removes reviews written before the reviewer crossed that threshold. It does not prove that the remaining authors completed the game, reached its endgame, or continued playing after publishing.

Use the lowest available threshold when you want to remove only the briefest first impressions. Use a higher threshold when your question concerns sustained play, balance, replay value, or long-term performance. Because the page may provide only a few preset choices, describe the actual option you selected rather than converting it into a universal rule for every game.
Combine language, type, and playtime filters
The controls work together. Selecting Your Languages, Negative, and a playtime minimum asks Steam to show only reviews satisfying all three conditions. Each additional filter makes the sample narrower, so always read the matching-review count before drawing a conclusion.
A practical sequence
- Begin with All Languages and All review types to see how much material is available.
- Set the playtime threshold if very short first impressions are not relevant to your question.
- Switch to Negative and scan for repeated issues.
- Switch to Positive without changing language or playtime, then look for the features supporters consistently mention.
- Change to Your Languages when you need a more comfortable reading set, and note whether the count changes substantially.
If a combination returns very few reviews, relax one filter at a time. For example, keep Negative and the playtime threshold but change Your Languages to All Languages. This shows whether the small sample came from language selection or from the other criteria.
Useful combinations
| Question | Language | Review Type | Playtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| What do players in my languages recommend? | Your Languages | All | No Minimum or the page’s default |
| What complaints come from people who played longer? | All Languages or Your Languages | Negative | A higher threshold offered on the page |
| What do supporters praise? | All Languages or Your Languages | Positive | A threshold appropriate to your question |
| How broad is the overall conversation? | All Languages | All | No Minimum |
The table describes reading goals, not fixed Steam presets. The exact playtime choices remain dependent on the store page.

Use the filter summary as a check
After every change, read the summary displayed near the review list. The sampled Steam page lists the active filters and the number of reviews that match them. This is the fastest way to catch an accidental setting, such as leaving Negative selected when you intended to read everything.
Treat the count as the size of the currently displayed set, not as a new rating. If you add a language, type, and playtime condition, the count should represent the intersection of those choices. Record the settings when you are comparing games so that you do not compare an unrestricted review set for one game with a highly filtered set for another.
The summary is also a useful reproducibility note. Write down the game page, date viewed, language choice, review type, playtime option, and display order. Steam’s list can change as new reviews arrive, recommendations change, or the interface is revised, so another person may not see exactly the same count later.
Nearby controls that are not the same as filters
Display choices
Steam pages may offer display choices such as Summary, Most Helpful, Recent, and Funny. These change how reviews are presented or ordered. They do not replace the language, recommendation-type, or playtime criteria.
Additional criteria
The same area may expose controls for purchase source, date range, device or Steam Deck use, and an option related to off-topic activity. These are adjacent controls, not required steps for filtering by language, playtime, or review type. If you use one, include it in your notes because it changes the population you are reading.
Sorting and filtering answer different questions. A Most Helpful view can rank a subset of reviews; a Negative filter decides which recommendation types are eligible to appear. Set the filters first, then choose the display order that helps you inspect that subset.
Why the review score can differ from what you read
Steam’s May 3, 2017 announcement described a recent-review score based on positive reviews from the preceding 30 days when enough recent reviews existed and the game had been available for at least 45 days. Those were the conditions Steam stated in that announcement. They are historical product details, not a current guarantee for every store page.
A filtered list is therefore a reading tool, not a replacement for the store’s headline score. A language, playtime, or type filter can produce a very different slice from the reviews contributing to a displayed summary. Note the date and settings whenever you use reviews to make a purchase decision.

Troubleshooting missing or unexpected results
The controls are hard to find
Return to the game’s store page and scroll to Customer reviews. Do not stop at the top-level store summary. Steam periodically changes its interface, so labels may move or be presented in a different order. Look for the headings Language, Review Type, and Playtime around the review list.
A playtime option you expect is absent
Do not assume that every page offers the same thresholds. Use the minimum option or fields shown on that page. The documented example includes No Minimum and Over 1 hour, but another game may expose a different set.
The language result is too small
Switch from Your Languages to All Languages and check the count again. Your language preference setting can exclude reviews you would otherwise want to inspect. This switch broadens the set; it does not translate the newly included text.
Reviews seem to contradict the playtime filter
Read the label carefully: the filter uses playtime when the review was written. Current playtime shown on a profile can be higher, so a reviewer may now have many hours even though the qualifying review was posted early.
The list still looks wrong
Read the active-filter summary and clear or change one control at a time. Verify the review type, language, playtime, and any nearby purchase-source or date controls. A display choice such as Recent or Most Helpful can also make the visible order look different without changing which reviews qualify.
A disciplined way to read filtered reviews
Start broad, then isolate
First inspect All Languages, All, and No Minimum when those options exist. This gives you a baseline. Then apply one constraint at a time so you can see how the count and themes change.
Separate recommendation from evidence
Use Positive and Negative to locate opposing recommendations, but evaluate the explanations inside the reviews. A polarity label tells you what the author recommends; it does not verify the claim, measure writing quality, or establish that a reported bug affects every player.

Playtime at writing helps distinguish very early impressions from reviews written after more use, but it is not a completion certificate. Combine the playtime filter with the review date or other date controls if the page offers them, and read the text for the author’s actual context.
Best Value
Keep settings with your notes
When you share a conclusion, record the language choice, review type, playtime threshold, display order, and review count. Another reader can then reproduce the same view or understand why their list differs. This is especially important because Steam’s available controls and defaults can change over time.
Common reading mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a high playtime means a favorable review. A reviewer can spend many hours with a game and still recommend against it.
- Treating Your Languages as automatic translation. It selects language categories associated with your preferences; it does not rewrite the review.
- Calling Most Helpful a filter. It is a display or ordering choice applied to the reviews that qualify under your filters.
- Comparing unequal samples. A game viewed with All Languages and No Minimum should not be compared directly with another viewed only in Your Languages and Negative.
- Reading the current profile total as the qualifying playtime. The relevant value is the author’s playtime when the review was posted.
- Assuming the 2017 defaults are still guaranteed. Steam’s May 3, 2017 description is historical context. Follow the controls and summary visible on the page today.
Key points to remember
- The controls are in the Customer reviews section of the game’s Steam store page.
- All Languages broadens the set; Your Languages uses languages associated with your Steam preferences.
- All, Positive, and Negative filter recommendation polarity, not review quality.
- Playtime means the reviewer’s playtime when the review was written, not necessarily their current total.
- Playtime thresholds are page-specific; follow the options currently displayed.
- Use the filter summary and matching count to verify the active combination.
- Display choices such as Most Helpful or Recent affect ordering, while the three main controls determine eligibility.
- Steam’s 2017 statements about language prioritization and recent-review scoring provide historical context, not a promise about today’s defaults.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I filter Steam reviews by language?
Open the game’s Steam store page, scroll to Customer reviews, and use Language. Choose All Languages for the broadest set or Your Languages for reviews in languages associated with your Steam preferences. Check the matching-review count afterward.
How do I see negative Steam reviews?
In Customer reviews, set Review Type to Negative. Confirm the filter summary and count. The result contains reviews whose authors selected a negative recommendation; it is not a separate quality or accuracy rating.
Can I filter Steam reviews by playtime?
Yes. Use Playtime in the Customer reviews section. Select the minimum option shown, or enter minimum and maximum values if the page provides fields. The measurement is the reviewer’s playtime when the review was written.
Does Steam offer the same playtime thresholds for every game?
Not necessarily. One current example shows No Minimum and Over 1 hour, but thresholds and editable fields can vary by store page and interface version. Use the labels visible on the page you are viewing.
Does Your Languages translate reviews?
No. Your Languages narrows the list to language categories associated with your Steam preferences. It does not translate reviews written in other languages. Select All Languages if you need to broaden the sample.
What is the difference between Most Helpful and Negative?
Negative is a recommendation-type filter that determines which reviews qualify. Most Helpful is a display choice that changes ordering or presentation within the selected set. They answer different questions and can be used together.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does a reviewer’s profile show more hours than the playtime filter suggests?
The filter uses playtime when the review was written, while a profile may show the reviewer’s current total. Additional hours played after posting do not change the original review-time value.
Why does my filtered review count change over time?
New reviews, recommendation changes, date or purchase settings, and Steam interface updates can alter the displayed population. Record the page, date, active filters, and count when you need a reproducible comparison.
The Bottom Line
Use the Customer reviews section on the game’s Steam store page: choose All Languages or Your Languages, set Review Type to All, Positive, or Negative, and apply the playtime option the page actually offers. Verify the active-filter summary and remember that playtime is measured when the review was written.
