On Android, search for restaurants, tap More Filters, choose the controls available on your device, and tap Apply. Google’s general desktop instructions show ratings and reviews on an individual place profile, but they do not list a minimum-rating filter for the restaurant-results list. Filter availability can differ by language, country, or region.
Which Google Maps controls can narrow restaurant results?
The controls you see depend on the interface and your location. Google’s current desktop help describes filters for restaurant cost and hours. Its Android help describes a general More Filters workflow but warns that filtering options are not available in every language and country or region. Treat the labels below as the documented paths, not a promise that every account will show identical controls.

A restaurant’s star rating is different from a result-list filter. A place profile may show ratings or reviews after you open a result. That information lets you evaluate a restaurant individually; it does not, by itself, filter the entire list to a chosen rating threshold.
What each filter actually narrows
Price narrows a search by the restaurant-cost categories that Maps offers for your location. Those categories are not established as fixed currency amounts everywhere, so use them as relative guidance rather than a universal budget scale.

Hours is a current-status check. It helps identify places that Maps considers open now, not necessarily places that will be open when you arrive later. The result can change as the day progresses.
Rating information belongs to the place profile in the documented desktop workflow. Opening a listing lets you read its displayed rating and reviews, but it does not turn the list into a minimum-star search. On Android, inspect More Filters because options can differ; Google’s general instructions do not promise a rating threshold control.
How to filter restaurants on Google Maps from a computer
1. Run a restaurant search
- Open Google Maps in a desktop browser.
- Search for a type of restaurant, a specific cuisine, or a place. You can also search for a broader business type and then narrow the results.
- Wait for the local-results list and map to load. The available filter controls appear with the results when Google offers them for that search.
The exact wording of the search affects which businesses are considered relevant. A broad search such as “restaurants” can produce different controls or ordering from a cuisine-specific search, so start with the kind of place you actually want.

- Choose the Price filter when it is displayed.
- Select the cost range offered by Maps.
- Review the resulting list and open a candidate to confirm its menu, address, and other place information.
Google’s desktop help describes Price as a way to search by restaurant cost. It does not establish that the price categories represent a fixed currency amount everywhere, so interpret the categories in the context of your location rather than treating them as a universal budget.
3. Check which restaurants are open
- Choose the Hours filter shown with the results.
- Use it to check places that are currently open.
- Open a listing before travelling, because the place profile contains the business’s posted hours and other details.
“Currently open” is a time-sensitive condition. A result can stop being open as the day progresses, and a profile’s hours can change. Use the filter for an immediate shortlist, then verify the individual listing when timing matters.
4. Inspect a restaurant’s rating
- Open the restaurant from the filtered results.
- Read the rating and reviews shown in the place information.
- Compare several listings if quality is important, rather than assuming that list position represents a particular star threshold.
The desktop help reviewed for this workflow lists Price and Hours among search filters and says place information can include ratings or reviews. It does not list a restaurant-results control such as “4 stars and up.” Therefore, do not describe opening a listing as rating-filtering the whole search.
How to filter restaurants in the Google Maps Android app
1. Search for the type of place
- Open the Google Maps app on an Android phone or tablet.
- Search for a business type, restaurant, cuisine, or place.
- Look above the results for More Filters.
2. Choose the filters that are offered
- Tap More Filters.
- Select the options that match your needs, such as cost or hours when those controls are available.
- Tap Apply to update the results.
Google’s Android instructions give this sequence but do not enumerate a single set of restaurant filters that appears on every device and in every region. If you do not see a rating, price, or hours option, that absence may reflect language, country or region, interface version, or the particular search—not a step you skipped.

3. Verify a result’s details
Tap a restaurant in the filtered list to open its place profile. Use the profile to read the displayed rating or reviews, check posted hours, and confirm that the location is the one you intended. The profile is the appropriate place to inspect rating information when no rating control appears in More Filters.
Can you filter Google Maps restaurants by rating?
Not according to the general desktop filter list reviewed for this guide. That list includes Price and Hours, while describing ratings and reviews as information available on a place profile. This supports a precise conclusion: you can inspect a restaurant’s rating, but the cited desktop instructions do not confirm a minimum-rating filter for the entire restaurant-results list.
Android is less uniform. Google directs Android users to More Filters and says that not all filtering options are available for all languages and countries or regions. A rating-related option may be absent, present, or labeled differently in a particular interface, but Google’s general Android instructions do not promise a rating threshold control everywhere. Check your own More Filters panel rather than assuming that another person’s screen applies to you.
A practical rating-based workflow
- Search for the restaurant type and apply Price or Hours first, if those controls are available.
- Open each plausible result from the shortened list.
- Record the displayed rating and read enough reviews to understand what the score refers to.
- Keep the listings that meet your personal standard and compare their hours, distance, and location before choosing.
This process uses ratings as a manual decision criterion, not as a claimed Google Maps search filter. It also avoids confusing a high position in the results with a guaranteed high rating.

How to combine price, hours, and rating information
When you need a low-cost restaurant open now
- Search for the cuisine or restaurant type.
- Apply Price.
- Apply Hours, or on Android open More Filters and select the equivalent option if shown.
- Open the remaining listings and inspect ratings and reviews individually.
Because ratings are handled through place information in the documented desktop workflow, the final quality check is manual. Do not assume that applying two filters also applies a hidden rating threshold.
When quality matters more than cost
- Search narrowly enough to avoid unrelated businesses.
- Use Hours if you need a currently open result.
- Open several candidate profiles and compare their displayed ratings and reviews.
- Use Price information as a trade-off after identifying places that meet your quality and timing needs.
When you are planning for a later time
The Hours filter is useful for checking current availability, but “open now” is not the same as “open at the time you will arrive.” Open the place profile and review its posted schedule for the relevant day. If the listing gives multiple service periods, account for the gap between them instead of relying on the current-state filter.
When you need several constraints at once
Apply the controls that are actually displayed, one at a time, and watch how the results change. Start with the most important constraint, such as cuisine or restaurant type, so relevance is not diluted. Then use Price and Hours where available. On Android, make all selections in More Filters before tapping Apply if the interface presents them together. Finish by opening individual profiles to compare ratings, reviews, posted hours, address, and distance.

If a combination leaves no useful choices, remove one constraint and broaden the search wording rather than assuming that Maps has no restaurants nearby. The result set is tied to the query and the controls available for that search.

Filters narrow the set of candidates, but they do not replace Google’s local-results ranking system. Google says local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. These factors are combined to find a good match, so a farther business can rank above a nearer one when it is considered more relevant to the search.
That means a Price or Hours filter should be read as a constraint, not as a complete ranking rule. Within the narrowed set, result order can still reflect how closely a listing matches the query, where it is located, and how prominent Google considers it. If a restaurant is missing, broaden or refine the search wording and check the map area rather than assuming that every eligible business will be ordered by rating.
Google also says payment from other companies does not influence Maps results and that paid content is labeled. A sponsored placement should therefore be distinguished from the ordinary local-results ordering when you evaluate what appears on screen.
Common mistakes and pitfalls
- Confusing a profile rating with a list filter: a star score shown after opening a listing is not proof that the list was filtered to that score.
- Treating “open now” as a future appointment: current status can change before you leave, so check the posted schedule for the day you plan to visit.
- Assuming price categories are universal: Google’s help describes restaurant cost, but it does not define one fixed currency value for every market.
- Expecting identical desktop and Android controls: the official instructions are separate, and Android options vary by language and country or region.
- Reading order as quality: relevance, distance, and prominence influence ordering; position is not a promised rating threshold.
- Ignoring the exact branch: open the profile to confirm the address and location, especially when a restaurant has more than one place listing.
- Assuming a missing control is hidden: if a rating option is not in the controls shown, use profiles for manual comparison rather than repeatedly searching for an undocumented button.
What to do when a filter is missing
On a computer
- Confirm that the search is for a restaurant or another place category for which Maps offers filters.
- Look for the controls displayed directly with the results; the documented examples are Price and Hours.
- Open individual listings to inspect ratings, reviews, and posted hours.
- Do not infer that a missing rating button is hidden behind the profile page; the reviewed desktop instructions do not list a restaurant rating-results filter.
On Android
- Run the search again and tap More Filters above the results.
- Scroll through the options shown before tapping Apply.
- Check the app’s display language and your country or region if another user sees different controls; Google explicitly warns that filtering availability varies.
- If no rating option appears, use the place profiles to compare ratings and reviews manually.
When results look inconsistent
- Check whether the Hours condition is current; open-now status changes over time.
- Confirm that you searched for the intended cuisine or business type, because relevance affects local ranking.
- Open the listing to verify the address and hours instead of relying only on the map pin or list label.
- Remember that interfaces and filter availability are volatile; Google can change labels and controls without changing the basic search concept.
Desktop and Android: which method should you use?
| Your goal | Computer | Android | Most reliable follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find a cost range | Use the documented Price filter when displayed | Open More Filters and choose a cost option if offered | Open the listing to understand the restaurant’s details |
| Find places open now | Use Hours | Use the hours-related option in More Filters if shown | Check the profile’s posted hours for the day and location |
| Find a minimum rating | No rating threshold is listed in the reviewed desktop instructions | Availability is not guaranteed; inspect More Filters | Compare ratings and reviews on individual profiles |
| Explain different controls on two devices | Desktop and Android are documented separately | Options vary by language and country or region | Use the controls currently displayed in your own interface |
A repeatable checklist for choosing a restaurant
- Define the search: enter the cuisine, restaurant type, or place you actually need.
- Set cost: use Price on desktop or the corresponding Android option when available.
- Set timing: use Hours or the Android hours option to find places currently open.
- Check rating information: open each candidate profile and read the displayed rating or reviews.
- Verify the location: make sure the listing is the branch or neighborhood you intend to visit.
- Recheck time-sensitive details: current-open status and posted hours can change.
- Interpret ordering correctly: relevance, distance, and prominence still influence local-result order after filtering.
What Google’s guidance does—and does not—promise
Google Maps Help’s desktop guidance supports using Price to search by restaurant cost and Hours to check places that are currently open. It also says that place information can include ratings or reviews. Those statements describe different layers of Maps: search-result controls narrow the list, while a place profile supplies details about one business.
Recommended Free Tools
Google Maps Help’s Android guidance supports the sequence search, More Filters, select options, and Apply. It does not publish one universal list of restaurant filter choices for every Android user. The company’s availability warning—“Not all filtering options are available for all languages and countries/regions”—is why instructions should be followed from the controls visible on your own screen.
Finally, local ranking remains based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence, and Google says paid content is labeled and payment from other companies does not influence Maps results. Filtering is therefore a way to narrow your decision set, not a guarantee that results are sorted by star rating or that every eligible restaurant appears in a particular order.

How do I filter restaurants by price in Google Maps?
On a computer, choose Price from the filters shown after your restaurant search and select the offered cost range. On Android, use the cost option in More Filters if it is available. The categories should be treated as local, relative cost indicators.
Can I filter Google Maps restaurants by rating?
The general desktop instructions reviewed here list Price and Hours, not a minimum-rating filter. You can open each place profile and compare its rating and reviews. Android controls vary, so inspect More Filters without assuming a rating threshold will be present.
Why does my friend have a filter that I do not?
Google says filtering options are not available for all languages and countries or regions. Desktop and Android also have separate interfaces, and controls can change with the particular search. Use the options displayed on your own device.
Does applying Hours guarantee the restaurant will be open when I arrive?
No. Hours narrows the list to places currently considered open. Recheck the place profile’s posted hours for the day and time of your visit because status and schedules can change.
Does the first result have the highest rating?
Not necessarily. Google says local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. A farther business can rank higher when it is a better match for the query, so compare ratings directly on profiles.
Do paid restaurants rank higher in Maps?
Google says payment from other companies does not influence Maps results and that paid content is labeled. Distinguish a labeled paid placement from ordinary local-result ordering.
What should I do if no restaurant meets every condition?
Keep the most important constraint, broaden the cuisine or place search, and remove one optional filter. Then inspect the remaining profiles for rating, hours, address, and price information rather than assuming the missing combination is a technical error.

The Bottom Line
Use Price and Hours where Google Maps displays them, and on Android follow More Filters → select options → Apply. Treat rating as profile information unless your own interface explicitly offers a rating control, because Google’s general desktop guidance does not confirm a restaurant rating threshold filter. Always verify the listing’s rating, reviews, address, and posted hours before you go.
