Open the Pokémon you want to protect, view its summary, and tap the Favorite star. Niantic says a favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred until you remove it from your favorites. To audit your protected Pokémon, search your Pokémon inventory for favorite. Because a transfer cannot be undone, use that check before confirming any individual or bulk transfer.
What favoriting does in Pokémon GO
Favoriting is an in-game safeguard attached to an individual Pokémon. The Favorite star appears on that Pokémon’s profile or summary. When the star is active, Niantic’s help documentation says the Pokémon cannot be transferred. This remains true until you deliberately remove it from favorites.

The safeguard addresses the most common transfer mistake: selecting the wrong Pokémon while clearing storage or transferring several Pokémon at once. It does not replace checking the final selection, and it is not a guarantee against unrelated account, synchronization, or game problems. Treat it as a transfer lock inside the Pokémon inventory.

Niantic’s official instructions were current on October 13, 2026. The names or placement of controls can move when Pokémon GO is updated, so follow the labels that correspond to the Pokémon summary, Favorite star, inventory search, and Transfer controls rather than relying on a particular icon position.

How to favorite a Pokémon
- Start from the Map View. Open the Main Menu, then tap Pokémon to open your Pokémon inventory.
- Choose the Pokémon. Tap the Pokémon you want to protect. This opens its summary or profile.
- Tap the Favorite star. Niantic’s exact instruction is: “You can tap on the star in a Pokémon’s profile to favorite that Pokémon.” The star should show that the Pokémon is marked as a favorite.
- Repeat for other valuable Pokémon. Favoriting is performed on each Pokémon’s profile, so protect every individual Pokémon you would not want selected for transfer.
There is no separate item, subscription, or inventory cost for this action. The protection is a status on the Pokémon itself. If you later decide to transfer that Pokémon, you must remove its favorite status before the transfer can proceed.
How to confirm which Pokémon are favorited
Use the Pokémon inventory’s search field and enter favorite. Niantic’s inventory-search instructions say the results show Pokémon marked as favorites. This is useful after protecting a large group and immediately before a storage-cleanup session.
A quick verification routine
- Open the Pokémon inventory from the Map View through Main Menu → Pokémon.
- Enter
favoritein the inventory search. - Review the results for the Pokémon you intended to protect.
- If one is missing, open that Pokémon’s profile and tap its Favorite star.
- Clear the search when you are ready to inspect your full inventory again.
The search is an audit tool, not a second type of lock. A Pokémon appears in the results because its Favorite status is active; removing that status removes it from the favorite search results.
Can you transfer a favorited Pokémon?
Not while it is favorited. Niantic states that favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred until they are removed from favorites. If a transfer control is unavailable for a Pokémon you selected, open that Pokémon’s summary and check whether the Favorite star is active.

How to transfer one Pokémon intentionally
When you are certain that a protected Pokémon should leave your collection, remove its Favorite status first. Niantic’s individual transfer path is:
- From the Map View, open Main Menu → Pokémon.
- Select the Pokémon.
- Open the Pokémon’s Menu.
- Tap Transfer.
- Read the confirmation screen and confirm only if you accept that the transfer is permanent.
Removing the star does not transfer the Pokémon by itself; it only makes the Pokémon eligible for the normal transfer flow. Keep the star active until you have made the transfer decision.
Why the final transfer check matters
Niantic says a transferred Pokémon cannot be recovered. That warning applies whether you transfer one Pokémon or several. Before confirming, inspect the selected list rather than assuming the Favorite safeguard caught every mistake.

- Confirm the Pokémon’s name, species, form, and other identifying details.
- Check that you did not open a similar-looking Pokémon by mistake.
- Verify that the transfer is intentional and that you do not need the Pokémon for a collection, trade, battle team, or other personal purpose.
- Proceed only after reading the confirmation prompt.
Bulk-transfer checklist
- Press and hold a Pokémon to begin the multi-selection flow.
- Select the additional Pokémon you want to transfer.
- Review every selected Pokémon before tapping Transfer.
- Stop if a selection is unexpected, then deselect it before confirming.
Favorited Pokémon are excluded from transfer according to Niantic’s transfer documentation, but reviewing the list remains necessary because unfavorited Pokémon, mistaken taps, and transfer restrictions can all affect what appears in a selection.

How bulk transfer works
Bulk transfer is a separate selection flow from transferring one Pokémon. Niantic describes starting by pressing and holding a Pokémon, selecting additional Pokémon, and then tapping Transfer. This can speed up storage management, but it also increases the number of selections that must be checked before confirmation.
Use favorites before a bulk cleanup
- Mark irreplaceable or high-value Pokémon as favorites from their individual summaries.
- Search
favoriteto confirm that the protected group appears. - Return to the broader inventory and start the bulk-selection flow by pressing and holding a Pokémon.
- Select only the Pokémon you have reviewed for transfer.
- Check the complete selected list, then tap Transfer if every entry is correct.
The favorite safeguard is especially useful here because a favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred. It should still be paired with a deliberate review: the transfer is permanent, and not every transfer limitation is caused by a favorite status.
Bulk-transfer restrictions to know
Niantic lists additional restrictions for bulk transfers. These rules can prevent a group transfer even when none of the selected Pokémon is favorited.

The restrictions above are separate from favoriting. A Pokémon can be unfavorited and still be ineligible for a particular bulk-transfer selection because of its Buddy, Gym, rarity, or other status.

A safer storage-cleanup workflow
Use this sequence when your goal is to free storage without losing a Pokémon accidentally:
- Protect first. Open important Pokémon one at a time and tap the Favorite star on each profile.
- Audit the protected set. Search
favoriteand confirm the results include the Pokémon you meant to safeguard. - Separate exceptions. Note active Buddies, Gym defenders, Shiny Pokémon, Lucky Pokémon, higher-level Buddy Pokémon, and Legendary or Mythical Pokémon before starting a bulk selection.
- Start with ordinary transfers. Press and hold a Pokémon, select only entries you have reviewed, and avoid adding any protected Pokémon.
- Inspect the selection. Check the entire list immediately before tapping Transfer.
- Confirm only once. A transfer cannot be reversed, so do not treat the confirmation screen as a formality.
- Handle exceptions separately. If the app blocks a group, follow the restriction shown and decide whether transferring individually is appropriate.
This process puts the irreversible decision at the end. Favorite status protects the Pokémon during selection, while the search and final-list checks catch mistakes that a single star cannot address.
Troubleshooting favorite and transfer problems
The Favorite star is hard to find
Open the Pokémon from Main Menu → Pokémon and make sure you are viewing its summary or profile rather than only the inventory grid. Niantic places the Favorite control on the Pokémon’s profile. If the app’s layout has changed, look for the star associated with that summary instead of relying on an older screenshot or screen position.

The Pokémon does not appear for favorite
Check that you entered the search term exactly as favorite, then open the Pokémon’s profile and tap the star again. If the star is not active, the Pokémon is not currently favorited. Clear and re-enter the search after changing the status so the inventory results refresh.
The app will not transfer a Pokémon
First check the Favorite star. If the Pokémon is favorited, it must be unfavorited before transfer. If it is not favorited, check the other documented restrictions: it may be the active Buddy, defending a Gym, or part of a restricted bulk selection involving Shiny, Lucky, Buddy, Legendary, or Mythical Pokémon.
A bulk transfer is blocked
Remove the blocked Pokémon from the selected group and inspect its status. Niantic’s rules include special limits for multiple Shiny or Lucky Pokémon, certain Buddy Pokémon, and multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon. The app may require a setting for the latter or may require a different transfer approach. Do not repeatedly confirm a group you have not reviewed.
The interface looks different after an update
Use the stable concepts in Niantic’s instructions: open the Pokémon inventory from the Main Menu, select a Pokémon, open its summary, use the Favorite star, search favorite, and review the Transfer selection. Button placement and surrounding artwork can change, but those functions remain the relevant checkpoints described by Niantic.
What favoriting does not do
- It does not restore a Pokémon after transfer. Transferred Pokémon cannot be recovered.
- It does not automatically decide which Pokémon should be kept; you still need to choose what matters to you.
- It does not make every transfer-related restriction disappear. Buddy, Gym, Shiny, Lucky, Legendary, and Mythical rules can apply independently.
- It does not remove the need to check a bulk-selection list before confirmation.
Think of the star as a deliberate “do not transfer” marker. It is most effective when you apply it before storage cleanup and verify it with the favorite search.
