In Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4, released October 13, 2026, water that flows horizontally onto Blue Ice converts the bordering water block into Brittle Ice. Mine that generated Brittle Ice with a Silk Touch pickaxe, leave the Blue Ice catalyst and water channel intact, and repeat the cycle at your base. This is snapshot content, so the mechanic and block behavior may change before a stable release.
For the safest setup, build the channel on ordinary solid blocks, approach the output from the side, and never stand on Brittle Ice while harvesting. Natural Brittle Ice can be collected in Ice Caves, but the renewable Blue Ice method avoids repeated trips over cave crevasses.

What you need to know before building
Brittle Ice is a new block in Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4. Mojang’s snapshot notes describe two ways to encounter it: it can generate in Ice Caves, and it “can also be created by water flowing onto a Blue Ice block.” The second behavior is the basis of a renewable farm.
The farm does not consume the Blue Ice. Blue Ice is the catalyst: keep it in place, direct a water source horizontally against one of its sides, and harvest the Brittle Ice that forms where the water borders it. Once the generated block is removed with Silk Touch, the arrangement can create another block without replacing the catalyst.

Version availability and what may change
The instructions in this guide target Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4. A snapshot is a development build, not a promise that every mechanic, name, texture, generation rule, or tool interaction will remain identical in the eventual release. If you are playing an earlier Java version, a later snapshot, a release candidate, or Bedrock Edition, check that Brittle Ice exists and that the Blue Ice-water conversion still works before committing resources to a large build.

World backups are especially important when testing a snapshot. Open the world copy in the snapshot profile, test the farm in a small area, and keep your main survival world on a separate backup. A future build could alter how water updates, how Brittle Ice breaks, or whether Silk Touch is required.
The official wording establishes the conversion but does not define a guaranteed output rate, a maximum number of output faces, or a preferred farm footprint. Any compact layout should therefore be treated as a design choice, not as an officially measured template.
How the Blue Ice and water interaction works
The catalyst block
Blue Ice is the block you protect. Place one where you want the farm to operate and design the channel around it. Mining the catalyst while harvesting removes the block that enables conversion, so the station stops being renewable until you replace it.
The water direction
The water must flow horizontally against a side of the Blue Ice. A source that merely sits nearby, flows away from the block, or contacts the wrong face will not provide the documented arrangement. Use a channel or enclosure to keep the flow pointed at the intended side and to prevent accidental spillover.

The output block
The water bordering the Blue Ice converts to Brittle Ice. That generated block is the item you collect. After it is mined, keep the source and catalyst in place so the same location can generate another output block.

Multiple output faces as an option
The current guide describes using more than one face of a Blue Ice block when water contacts multiple sides. This can make a compact station more productive in practice, but the exact layout and output count are not specified in Mojang’s notes. Build one face first, confirm the conversion in your world, and expand only after you understand how water updates in your snapshot build.
Gather the required materials
Blue Ice
You need at least one Blue Ice block for the renewable station. The researched in-game guide places Blue Ice in iceberg and frozen-ocean terrain. Bring suitable exploration supplies, or use Blue Ice already obtained in your world. The farm needs only the catalyst block itself; do not plan to spend it as a building block around the output.
Water and a bucket
Fill a bucket at any water source. One water bucket is enough to establish the source for a basic channel. The channel or enclosure can be made from ordinary solid blocks available in your world; its job is to constrain the flow and give you stable footing.

Silk Touch is required to obtain Brittle Ice as an item. Without Silk Touch, breaking the generated block will not give you the collectible block you are trying to farm. Bring a pickaxe with Silk Touch before activating the station and keep it in your hotbar while harvesting so you do not accidentally use a different tool.
Building blocks and safe footing
Use blocks that let you stand beside the output rather than on it. A low wall, side ledge, or enclosed channel is useful because Brittle Ice is unsafe as a work floor. The exact number of blocks depends on the shape you choose; the important requirements are a contained horizontal water path, an exposed Blue Ice face, and a stable position from which to mine.
Build a basic renewable Brittle Ice farm
Step 1: Choose a controlled location
Select a flat, well-lit area at your base or another place you can revisit easily. Solid ground is preferable to an open ravine, a cliff edge, or a cave crevasse. Leave enough room to approach the output from the side and to place blocks around the water without stepping into the generated ice.
Step 2: Place the Blue Ice
Put one Blue Ice block at the end of the planned channel. Decide which side will receive the water and keep that face accessible. Mark the catalyst visually with a distinctive surrounding block if your build is large; the reminder helps prevent mining the wrong block during repeated collection.

Step 3: Build the channel or enclosure
Place solid blocks so water has a defined horizontal route toward the selected Blue Ice face. The enclosure should stop the water from spreading into your walkway and should leave the bordering position visible. Do not cover the output location with a decorative block or trap it behind a wall you cannot reach from stable terrain.
Step 4: Add the water source
Use the bucket to place water so it flows horizontally against the side of the Blue Ice. Observe the direction before you begin mining. If the water runs past the catalyst, pools away from it, or escapes the channel, remove and reposition the source or adjust the enclosure until the flow contacts the intended face.
Step 5: Wait for the conversion and inspect the output
Look at the block bordering the Blue Ice. When the interaction succeeds, that position becomes Brittle Ice. Keep your crosshair and movement away from the new block while checking it; stepping onto it starts the cracking behavior described by Mojang.
Step 6: Mine from the side with Silk Touch
Stand on ordinary solid terrain adjacent to the generated block. Use the Silk Touch pickaxe to break it from the side, collect the item, and avoid clicking the Blue Ice behind it. If the output is surrounded by water, approach from the dry ledge or build a temporary side platform rather than using the ice as a bridge.
Step 7: Confirm the cycle
After collection, verify that the Blue Ice remains and that the water still reaches its side. The same arrangement should be ready to produce another output block. If it does not, inspect for a displaced source, a broken enclosure block, or an accidental hit on the catalyst before rebuilding the entire station.
Expand the station without sacrificing reliability
Use more than one exposed face carefully
A single Blue Ice block may be arranged so water contacts multiple faces, giving you multiple possible output positions. Because no official output count or exact geometry is published, treat this as an experimental design option. Test each face independently, label the catalyst, and ensure every output position can be mined from solid ground.
Keep collection paths separate from water paths
Make the channel do one job—directing water—and make the walkway do another—supporting you while mining. A side corridor, raised ledge, or shallow enclosure reduces accidental steps onto Brittle Ice. It also makes it easier to see whether a conversion occurred without placing your character in the flow.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
Leave room for maintenance
Do not seal the catalyst behind permanent walls. You may need to replace a channel block, refill the source, or test a changed snapshot. A small access opening lets you correct the farm without dismantling the whole structure, while a visible marker identifies the block that must remain in place.
Scale by repeating proven modules
Once one station works, duplicate that simple module rather than immediately creating a complicated water network. Separate modules make it easier to identify a failed source or broken catalyst. They also let you compare layouts in the same snapshot without assuming that a larger arrangement produces proportionally more blocks.
Harvest Brittle Ice without breaking it underfoot
Brittle Ice is not a normal permanent floor. Mojang warns that once a player or mob steps on it, it starts to crack and eventually breaks. This behavior changes how you should build and collect it.
- Approach from adjacent solid terrain, not across the output.
- Mine from the side with Silk Touch instead of standing on the block.
- Keep the channel edge, walkway, or ledge one block away from the output whenever possible.
- Prevent animals and hostile mobs from wandering onto the station with walls, lighting, or controlled access.
- Do not use freshly generated Brittle Ice as a temporary bridge while moving materials.
- If you need to reach a distant output face, place temporary solid blocks on the safe side of the channel and remove them after collection.
Frostbite mobs are an exception in the official notes: they can walk on Brittle Ice without breaking it. That does not make the block safe for players or ordinary mobs, and it is not a reason to use it as general flooring.

Finding natural Brittle Ice in Ice Caves
Natural Brittle Ice appears in Ice Cave crevasses. This route can provide your first sample if you have not yet obtained Blue Ice, but it has a different risk profile from a base farm. Crevasses create fall hazards, and the block itself can crack when stepped on.
Use the cave route for discovery
Explore Ice Caves cautiously, identify naturally generated Brittle Ice, and collect it with Silk Touch from a stable adjacent block. Do not rush onto an ice shelf to reach a distant patch. Secure your position first with ordinary blocks and keep a clear retreat path.
Switch to a base station for repeat trips
Once you have Blue Ice and a Silk Touch pickaxe, a fixed station is generally more convenient for repeated collection. It keeps the work at a known elevation, avoids recurring cave travel, and lets you control water and mob access. The cave remains useful for exploration and discovery, but it is not necessary for every harvest after the farm is operating.

| Collection method | Strengths | Costs and risks |
|---|---|---|
| Ice Cave collection | Natural source; no farm construction is needed. | Requires travel through Ice Caves, exposes you to crevasses and cracking ice, and depends on finding suitable terrain. |
| Blue Ice-water station | Repeatable at a fixed base location; controlled footing and water flow; no recurring cave journey. | Requires an initial Blue Ice block, a water bucket, a Silk Touch pickaxe, and a safe enclosure. |
| Large multi-face design | Can expose several potential output faces from one catalyst in a compact build. | Exact geometry and output count are not established in the official notes; more faces mean more opportunities for awkward access or accidental catalyst damage. |
Troubleshoot a farm that is not producing output
The water touches Blue Ice but nothing changes
- Confirm you are playing Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4 or another build that includes the mechanic.
- Check that the water is flowing horizontally against a side, not merely sitting nearby or flowing away.
- Remove decorative blocks that occupy the bordering output position.
- Rebuild the source and channel in a small test module to isolate a water-update problem.
The output appears, then disappears
- Check whether you or a mob stepped on it; stepping starts the cracking process.
- Approach from solid ground and mine with Silk Touch instead of walking across the block.
- Fence or wall the station if animals or hostile mobs can enter.
The block breaks but does not enter your inventory
- Verify that the equipped pickaxe has Silk Touch.
- Make sure you are breaking the generated Brittle Ice rather than the Blue Ice catalyst.
- Check your inventory and nearby collection area before assuming the drop was lost.
The farm worked once and then stopped
- Inspect whether the Blue Ice catalyst was accidentally mined.
- Look for a displaced water source or a damaged channel wall.
- Restore the original horizontal contact and test one output face before adding additional faces.
You cannot safely reach the output
Do not solve an access problem by standing on Brittle Ice. Extend the solid side ledge, add a temporary platform on the dry side, or redesign the enclosure so the output is visible and mineable from adjacent terrain.
Plan an efficient workflow
Separate acquisition from production
Acquire Blue Ice, water, and Silk Touch before constructing a permanent station. Once those prerequisites are available, production becomes a repeatable placement-and-harvest cycle rather than an expedition. Store the pickaxe near the farm and keep spare building blocks available for channel repairs.
Prioritize safe access over maximum compactness
The smallest possible footprint is not automatically the most efficient design if it forces you to step onto the output or repeatedly dismantle walls. A slightly wider side walkway can reduce lost blocks, accidental catalyst damage, and repair time. Since no official rate is available, measure efficiency by reliable collection and low-risk operation rather than an invented items-per-hour target.
Keep a test module for snapshot updates
When the game updates, test one Blue Ice block and one water source before changing a larger array. Confirm that conversion still occurs, that Silk Touch still collects the item, and that the cracking behavior matches your safety assumptions. If a later snapshot changes the interaction, a small test area limits the impact on your main base.
Important limitations of the current information
The documented mechanic confirms the conversion from flowing water and Blue Ice, the natural Ice Cave location, the Silk Touch collection requirement, and the cracking behavior when players or ordinary mobs step on Brittle Ice. It does not establish a guaranteed production rate, a universal best layout, an exact maximum number of output faces, or availability in Bedrock Edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAccordingly, avoid promises such as “X blocks per hour” or claims that one geometry is optimal for every world. Build the basic one-face station first, verify it in your exact snapshot, and expand only when the water behavior and access path are reliable.
Practical checklist
- Playing Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4 or a build confirmed to retain the mechanic.
- At least one Blue Ice block reserved as the catalyst.
- A water bucket and a contained horizontal channel.
- A Silk Touch pickaxe equipped before harvesting.
- Solid footing beside every output position.
- A visible marker showing which block must not be mined.
- Mob control around the station.
- A backup of the world before testing snapshot builds.
- No assumption of an official production rate or guaranteed multi-face output.
The efficient renewable method is therefore simple: place Blue Ice, direct water horizontally against it, mine the resulting Brittle Ice with Silk Touch from stable ground, and preserve the catalyst for the next cycle. Use Ice Caves to find natural blocks or obtain early samples, but rely on the controlled base station for repeatable harvesting while this snapshot mechanic remains available.
