How to Farm AP Fast in Final Fantasy VII Remake (Post-Game Chapter 16 Route)

The most practical repeatable AP route in Final Fantasy VII Remake is the Shinra parking-garage section in Chapter 16. After finishing the story, use Chapter Select, equip the materia you want to level, link one of them to AP Up, clear the security encounters, and restart Chapter 16 after reaching the Shinra Building. Chapter 17’s Shinra Combat Simulator and the Corneo Colosseum are useful alternatives, but available guides do not establish one universally fastest route for every party and build.

What AP farming means in Final Fantasy VII Remake

Ability Points (AP) are earned by defeating enemies and are used to unlock materia abilities. A materia that is not equipped receives no AP, so farming only helps the items assigned to your active characters. The efficient approach is therefore a repeatable set of battles that you can clear quickly while carrying the specific materia that still has abilities to unlock.

This guide is for the original Final Fantasy VII Remake. It is not a guide to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth; Rebirth uses different chapters, activities and progression routes. The methods below concern Remake’s Chapter Select, Shinra HQ content, Shinra Combat Simulator and Corneo Colosseum.

Fast answer: the Chapter 16 parking-garage loop

  1. Complete the story so post-game Chapter Select is available.
  2. Select Chapter 16 and begin the parking-garage section.
  3. Equip the materia that needs AP. Link AP Up to one target materia.
  4. Defeat the Shinra security encounters while moving toward the Shinra Building.
  5. Once you reach the building, restart Chapter 16 and repeat the section.

PlayStation’s endgame guidance confirms that Chapter Select lets you revisit chapters with your upgrades and equipment. A detailed GameFAQs route and a Gameranx guide both identify the Chapter 16 parking-lot or parking-garage encounters as a repeatable AP activity. They do not provide a controlled test proving that it is always faster than every simulator or Colosseum battle, so treat it as the dependable default rather than a universal record holder.

Prerequisites before you start farming

Finish the story and unlock Chapter Select

The route is intended for post-game play. Finishing the story unlocks the Chapter Select benefits that let you return to earlier chapters while retaining your late-game progression. PlayStation’s endgame overview specifically presents Chapter Select as a way to revisit content and use improved equipment.

Decide which materia actually needs AP

Open the Materia & Equipment menus and make a short list of unfinished materia. Prioritize items whose next ability will change your build or unlock a spell you plan to use. Do not leave mastered materia in AP-bearing slots when another item still needs points; a mastered materia cannot use additional AP, and the slot is better spent on a target.

Prepare equipment with enough linked slots

Late-game equipment generally offers more materia capacity. PlayStation’s guidance recommends using that gear and pairing an AP Up-linked slot with the materia you want to level. Before entering the loop, check every active character’s weapon and armor so that AP Up and your target materia are connected correctly.

How to set up AP Up correctly

Link AP Up to one target

Place AP Up in a linked pair of slots and put one unfinished materia in the adjacent slot. The useful pattern is one AP Up plus one target. If you have several unfinished materia, use additional AP Up pairs only when your equipment and build can spare the slots; never displace a required combat materia merely to carry a mastered item.

Check the active party

AP is awarded to materia equipped on characters who participate in the battle. Before starting, verify which characters will be present for the encounters and move target materia onto those characters. Chapter-based activities can change party availability, so recheck the loadout whenever you switch from Chapter 16 to Chapter 17 or an arena challenge.

Keep a rotation list

Write down the materia you are leveling and its next ability. After a run, replace a mastered item immediately. This avoids spending another loop carrying a completed materia and makes the AP session measurable without relying on a stopwatch or an assumed reward rate.

Step-by-step: repeat Chapter 16’s parking-garage encounters

1. Select Chapter 16

From the post-game Chapter Select menu, choose Chapter 16. Start with the equipment and upgrades you intend to use for farming; Chapter Select preserves your progression, so you do not need to replay earlier chapters to recover your gear.

2. Enter the parking-garage section

Proceed through the parking-garage or underground parking-lot section on the way to the Shinra Building. The route consists of the Shinra security encounters in this area. Follow the normal objective path rather than detouring into unrelated exploration, because the value of the loop comes from repeating the same compact set of fights.

3. Clear each security encounter

Defeat the groups in the section, collecting the AP awarded after each battle. Use your normal weaknesses-and-stagger strategy, but favor reliable area damage when several enemies appear together. Do not change difficulty or party composition mid-session unless a battle is consistently slowing you down; a stable loop is easier to evaluate than a sequence of changing setups.

4. Reach the Shinra Building and restart

After arriving at the Shinra Building, restart Chapter 16 from Chapter Select. The GameFAQs route and Gameranx’s description both use this restart point to repeat the parking section. You are not required to finish the entire chapter for each AP cycle.

5. Refill your target list

At the beginning of the next cycle, check whether any materia mastered its current ability. Move that item out, equip the next target, and confirm the AP Up link before entering the first encounter.

Battle setup for shorter, safer runs

Magnify plus Fire for groups

Gameranx recommends linking Magnify with Fire to handle groups, while the GameFAQs guide also describes a Fire/Magnify pairing. With Magnify linked to the elemental spell, one cast can cover multiple targets when the encounter allows it. This is guide advice rather than a result from an independently timed test, so use it only if your characters already cast reliably and the spell does not create more recovery time than it saves.

First Strike for immediate commands

The GameFAQs setup mentions First Strike alongside the Fire/Magnify pairing. First Strike can give a character an early command, allowing you to start an area spell or another opening action without waiting for the initial gauge to fill. It is optional: if First Strike occupies a slot needed by a target materia, keep the target and accept a slightly slower opening.

Use a dependable action sequence

Build a repeatable sequence for the first seconds of each encounter. For example, have the character with the linked spell begin the group attack while another character draws attention or applies a stagger-building action. The exact command depends on your unlocked abilities and party, and no source establishes a single best rotation. Reliability matters more than a theoretical maximum when you will repeat the section many times.

Do not over-optimize around unverified times

No cited guide supplies a controlled comparison using identical equipment, difficulty, party and completion times. Avoid claims such as “this setup always gives the highest AP per minute.” If a different loadout clears your encounters more consistently, it may be the better personal choice even if a guide highlights Magnify, Fire or First Strike.

Chapter 17 Shinra Combat Simulator: the main alternative

When to choose it

Chapter 17 contains the Shinra Combat Simulator, and PlayStation’s endgame overview identifies the simulator as a post-game challenge opportunity. A GameFAQs guide says it becomes accessible soon after starting Chapter 17 and describes its battles as repeatable AP activities. Choose it when you prefer discrete arena fights over running through the parking garage, or when your current party clears a particular simulator battle more smoothly.

Party-size trade-off

Some Chapter 17 simulator battles have fewer available party members, according to the GameFAQs guide. That can be useful if you want more AP-bearing slots concentrated among the characters who are actually active, but it also means fewer combat roles and less flexibility. Check the battle’s party restrictions before moving materia; a target equipped on an unavailable character will not help during that fight.

Use the simulator as a loop, not a one-time clear

Pick a battle you can complete without repeated failures, enter it again after the reward screen, and replace mastered materia between attempts. A higher-tier challenge is not automatically better for farming if it takes much longer or forces you to spend resources recovering from mistakes.

Corneo Colosseum challenges

The Corneo Colosseum is another post-game activity identified by PlayStation, and RPG Site lists Colosseum fights alongside simulator battles as AP options. Colosseum challenges are suitable if you prefer arena rules, want to practice a particular character, or already have a short challenge that your build handles comfortably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before committing to a Colosseum loop, verify who can enter and which materia are equipped on the participating characters. Arena restrictions can make a loadout that is excellent in Chapter 16 unusable. If a challenge includes several rounds, judge it by the complete cycle rather than by the AP from one round; the relevant comparison is how quickly and consistently you can start the next attempt.

Which AP route should you use?

Route Best fit Important checks What the sources establish
Chapter 16 parking garage A straightforward repeatable run through Shinra security encounters Chapter Select unlocked; target materia equipped; restart after reaching the Shinra Building GameFAQs and Gameranx describe it as a repeatable AP route
Chapter 17 Shinra Combat Simulator Players who prefer self-contained arena battles or have a strong Chapter 17 build Simulator access; battle-specific party restrictions; target materia on active characters PlayStation identifies the simulator as a post-game activity; GameFAQs describes repeatable battles and notes that some use fewer party members
Corneo Colosseum Players who favor tournament-style challenges or need a particular arena practice loop Challenge eligibility, party rules and a repeatable clear PlayStation and RPG Site identify Colosseum challenges as an AP opportunity

There is no source-backed universal ranking among these three. Compare them using four practical criteria: whether the activity is unlocked, how quickly your present build clears it, how many of your target materia can be equipped on the active party, and whether you prefer a short route or a multi-round arena battle.

What the post-game AP multiplier means

A GameFAQs guide reports that completing the game and using Chapter Select grants 3× AP per battle, along with 2× EXP. Attribute those figures to that guide’s game-version context; the cited PlayStation material confirms Chapter Select and post-game activities but does not state the multiplier in the relevant passage.

The multiplier does not make every route equally efficient. Your total still depends on which enemies you defeat, how many encounters you complete, the party and equipment carrying the materia, and how long each cycle takes. Treat 3× AP as a post-game benefit reported by the guide, not as a promise of a fixed number of points for every parking-garage run or simulator battle.

How to make an AP session efficient

Start with a single target

Level one priority materia at a time when possible. A focused target list makes it obvious when an ability is complete and prevents you from forgetting which slot AP Up is multiplying.

Remove mastered materia immediately

After each cycle, inspect the AP bar. Replace a mastered item before restarting. If every item in a character’s linked pair is complete, move AP Up to another unfinished target rather than leaving the multiplier idle.

Keep the loop consistent

Use the same route, party and opening commands for several attempts before deciding whether it works. Changing all three at once makes it impossible to tell whether a slower run came from the encounter, a party restriction or a different loadout.

Favor survivability when failures erase time

A fragile setup that occasionally loses can be less efficient than a slightly slower setup that clears every attempt. Keep healing, defensive options or a safer opening if they prevent restarts. The available guides do not establish that a particular aggressive build is optimal for every player.

Track progress by abilities, not a guessed AP rate

Because no cited source supplies a controlled run-rate comparison, record which abilities were unlocked after a set number of cycles instead of assuming a universal AP-per-minute figure. This also reveals whether a battle is worth repeating with your current equipment.

Hard Mode and difficulty questions

Players often ask for the fastest AP method on Hard Mode. The same Chapter Select, Chapter 16, Chapter 17 and Colosseum options are available as activities, but the supplied guides do not provide a controlled Hard Mode comparison or prove that one route wins under every difficulty setting. On Hard Mode, use the activity your party can clear reliably with its restrictions and resource rules. If the parking-garage loop causes repeated failures, move to a simulator or Colosseum battle that your build handles more consistently rather than assuming the nominal route is still fastest.

Common mistakes and fixes

Running the wrong game

Search results often mix Remake and Rebirth. Confirm that the title on your game and guide is Final Fantasy VII Remake; Rebirth’s chapter and farming advice does not apply to this Chapter 16/17 route.

Restarting too early

If you restart before completing the parking-garage encounters, you leave part of the route’s AP unclaimed. Follow the section to the Shinra Building, then restart Chapter 16.

Linking AP Up to the wrong item

AP Up only helps the materia in its linked pair. Pause before the first battle and verify that the adjacent slot contains the unfinished materia, not a mastered spell or an item you do not intend to level.

Leaving targets on an inactive character

Chapter 17 simulator battles and Colosseum challenges can limit the party. Move the target materia to characters who actually participate in the selected battle.

Assuming every arena battle is better

Simulator and Colosseum fights are alternatives, not proven universal winners. If an arena challenge takes longer or causes more failures than Chapter 16, use the parking-garage loop instead.

Expecting a fixed AP total

Enemy groups cleared, party, equipment and run time affect the practical result. The cited material does not establish one fixed AP number for every cycle, so do not treat an online figure as a guaranteed payout for your save.

Recommended decision checklist

  • Have you finished the story and unlocked post-game Chapter Select?
  • Are you playing Final Fantasy VII Remake, not Rebirth?
  • Which materia still has an ability to unlock?
  • Is AP Up linked to exactly one unfinished target?
  • Are those target materia equipped on characters who will fight?
  • Can your current build clear the Chapter 16 security encounters without repeated failures?
  • If not, can a Chapter 17 simulator battle or Corneo Colosseum challenge provide a more reliable loop?
  • After each cycle, did you replace any materia that became mastered?

Bottom line

For most post-game players, begin with Chapter 16’s parking-garage encounters: it is compact, repeatable and supported by multiple guides. Use Chapter Select, carry only materia that still needs AP, link AP Up to one target, clear the security groups, reach the Shinra Building and restart. Switch to Chapter 17’s Shinra Combat Simulator or the Corneo Colosseum when your party clears those activities more reliably or when their party rules better fit the materia you need to level. The 3× AP figure is reported by a GameFAQs guide, while the official PlayStation material confirms the broader post-game activities; neither establishes a single fastest route for every player.
