How do I factory reset Google TV Streamer without losing my Google account?
Use either the on-screen Google TV menu or the physical button on the back of the Google TV Streamer (4K). Both methods return the streamer to factory defaults and clear data stored on that device. Neither method is an instruction to delete the Google Account itself.

Google’s official warning is direct: “This action clears your data and can’t be undone.” Treat the reset as permanent for information saved on the streamer. The reset does not erase Gmail, Drive files, Google Photos, or other information held by your Google Account. After the wipe, the setup flow asks you to sign in again, so you can use the same account if you still want it on the streamer.

If you are returning, selling, or giving away the device, factory resetting it is the documented preparation step. If you are only trying to fix an app or connection problem, a restart, update check, or app-data clear may solve the issue without wiping the entire device.
Will factory resetting Google TV Streamer delete my Google Account?
No. A factory reset acts on the Google TV Streamer, not on the underlying Google Account. Google’s reset instructions describe clearing data from the device and restoring factory defaults; they do not tell you to delete your account.
The important distinction is between device data and account data. Settings and information held locally by the streamer are cleared. Your Google Account remains available for signing in on the reset device, another streamer, a phone, or a computer. The setup guide specifically includes Google Account sign-in after the device has been reset.
You can use the same account that was previously connected, or another account you are authorized to use. A new Google Account is not required merely because the streamer was reset.
What a reset removes—and what it does not
| Action | What it affects | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Factory reset from the streamer | Data and settings stored on the Google TV Streamer | Returns the device to factory defaults and cannot be undone. |
| Remove accounts from the streamer | Accounts configured under the device’s Accounts & Sign In settings | Google says removing all accounts from the streaming device causes a factory reset. |
| Sign out through Google Account device activity | The device session shown in your Google Account | This is a separate account-management action from resetting the hardware. |
| Remove the streamer from Google Home | The streamer’s Google Home and household links | Google says this unlinks the streamer from your account and other home members’ accounts and deletes data associated with the device. |
These routes are not interchangeable. A factory reset is the straightforward choice when you need a clean device or want to start setup again. Removing an account changes account access on the streamer. Signing out through account activity manages a session remotely. Removing the device from Google Home changes the streamer’s relationship with your home and other household members.
Google’s reset materials do not promise how every third-party subscription, app login, purchase, watch history, or cloud-held setting will be handled. Those services may have their own account controls. Do not assume that resetting the hardware cancels a subscription or deletes information held by an app provider; check the relevant provider if that is your goal.
What to prepare before you reset
A little preparation prevents an avoidable interruption, especially if you are resetting for troubleshooting rather than transferring ownership.
- Confirm the device. These instructions are for Google TV Streamer (4K), not an older Chromecast model. Google publishes device-specific button timings.
- Decide whether the wipe is necessary. The reset cannot be undone. If you are only changing profiles or testing an app, use the narrower control when possible.
- Keep power connected. The streamer must be powered for either method, and it must remain powered while the reset completes.
- Keep the remote available for the menu method. You need a working TV display and remote to navigate to Factory Reset.
- Know your intended sign-in. Setup will ask for a Google Account again. Use the account you want associated with the freshly reset device.
- Have your network available. Setup requires connecting the streamer to Wi-Fi, whether you use the Google Home app or the TV and Voice Remote.
You do not need to buy an accessory or a replacement device to perform the reset. A replacement Google TV Streamer is relevant only if you have decided to replace the hardware; it is not a requirement for clearing the existing unit.
Before resetting: try Google’s less-destructive troubleshooting
A reset is appropriate when you need a clean start, are preparing the device for another person, or have exhausted ordinary troubleshooting. For a problem that may be caused by connectivity, software, an app, or the active profile, Google’s general Google TV guidance puts several checks before a factory reset.
- Check Wi-Fi. Confirm that the streamer is connected to the intended network and that the network itself is working. A connection problem can look like an app or device failure.
- Check for system updates. Install any available Google TV system update before erasing the device. Updating may address a software issue without requiring a full wipe.
- Restart the streamer. A restart can clear a temporary fault while leaving configured data in place.
- Check the active profile. Make sure the expected Google TV profile is selected. A profile mismatch can make content or settings appear to be missing.
- Clear the affected app’s data. If one app is misbehaving, clear that app’s data rather than wiping the entire streamer.
These steps are general Google TV advice, not a guarantee that every fault has the same cause or fix. If the issue continues after those checks, a factory reset gives you the cleanest software state available on the device. Remember that you will have to complete setup and sign in again afterward.
Choose the reset method that matches your situation
| Method | Access required | When it is useful | Reset feedback |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV menu | A working TV display and remote navigation | You can open Google TV settings normally | On-screen reset confirmation and the normal reboot process |
| Rear button | The streamer must be connected to the TV and powered on | The menu is unavailable or navigation is not working | Yellow blinking LED, followed by a solid white LED |
Both methods produce the same factory-reset outcome. The difference is access and feedback: the menu method gives you a written confirmation on the TV, while the button method relies on the LED sequence. If the interface works, the menu is easier to verify. If the interface is frozen or inaccessible, the rear button provides an alternative.

- Turn on the television connected to the Google TV Streamer.
- At the top-right of the TV screen, select your profile.
- Select All settings.
- Open System.
- Select About.
- Choose Factory Reset.
- Read the confirmation prompt. Confirm only when you are ready to erase the streamer’s data permanently.
- Leave the streamer powered while it completes the reset. Do not disconnect its power during the process.
The key path is profile > All settings > System > About > Factory Reset. If you are uncertain whether you are in the right menu, stop at the confirmation screen and verify that the command says Factory Reset before proceeding.
When the reset is complete, the device returns to its initial setup state. Your television may briefly lose the streamer’s picture while it restarts; that is expected during a reset. Do not interpret a temporary blank screen during the reboot as proof that your Google Account was deleted.
Method 2: Factory reset with the button on the streamer
Use the hardware-button method when you cannot reach the on-screen menu. Keep the Google TV Streamer connected to the television and powered on so you can watch the LED sequence.

- Locate the button on the back of the Google TV Streamer.
- Press and hold the button for 10–12 seconds.
- Continue holding until the LED starts blinking yellow.
- When the LED turns solid white, release the button.
- Allow the device to complete the reset and restart before disconnecting it or beginning setup.
The LED sequence is the confirmation for this method: blinking yellow indicates that the reset process has been initiated, and solid white is the point at which Google’s instructions tell you to release the button. Releasing at the first change in the light, rather than at solid white, can prevent the documented sequence from completing.
These timings are for Google TV Streamer (4K). Do not substitute reset timings from older Chromecast models; Google publishes device-specific instructions, and older procedures are not the procedure described here.
What happens immediately after the reset?
After the streamer restarts, it behaves like a new device. The previous local configuration is gone, so you must complete setup before using the Google TV home screen and installed services again.
The reset itself does not require a purchase. You need the powered streamer, a connected TV for the documented button procedure, and either the remote or a compatible phone or tablet for setup. The two official setup routes are described below.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOption A: Set up with the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app on a compatible phone or tablet.
- Start the add-device setup flow and select the Google TV Streamer when it appears.
- Follow the pairing and network prompts shown in the app.
- When prompted, sign in with a Google Account.
- Complete the remaining on-screen instructions until the streamer reaches the Google TV home screen.
This route is useful when phone-based setup is more convenient or when you want the app to guide device discovery and connection. Follow the prompts as displayed; the exact sequence can depend on the current setup flow.
Option B: Set up with the TV and Voice Remote
- Leave the reset streamer connected to the TV and powered on.
- Follow the setup prompts displayed on the TV.
- Connect it to your Wi-Fi network when requested.
- Sign in with a Google Account when the TV asks for one.
- Finish the remaining device and profile settings.
Choose this route when you want to complete setup from the television or when using the Google Home app is inconvenient. Both routes lead to the same basic result: a reset device associated with the account you select during setup.
Account actions that are easy to confuse with a factory reset
Removing an account from the streamer
To manage accounts configured on the device, open All settings > Accounts & Sign In. Removing every account from the streaming device is a separate account-management route, but Google says that removing all accounts causes a factory reset. Therefore, do not use it casually if you only intend to switch profiles temporarily.
If you remove one account but leave another, the result is not the same as removing all accounts. Read the on-screen confirmation carefully, because the all-accounts action has the factory-reset consequence documented by Google.

Google also provides a way to sign out a streaming device from the device-activity area of your Google Account. That action manages the account session associated with the device; it is not the same command as resetting the streamer through its TV menu or rear button.

Use account activity when your objective is to manage a sign-in session. Use the physical or menu reset when your objective is to erase the streamer and restore factory defaults.
Removing the device from Google Home
Removing the streamer through Google Home has broader household consequences. Google says it unlinks the streamer from your Google Account and from the accounts of other members of the home, and deletes data associated with the device. Use that route when you specifically want to remove the Home relationship, not merely to troubleshoot a local streamer problem.
Because this action affects household links, do not treat it as a routine substitute for a factory reset. Decide whether you need a local device wipe, an account sign-out, or removal from the Google Home household before choosing the control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you are selling, returning, or giving away the streamer
Google explicitly recommends a factory reset before returning or giving away the Google TV Streamer. The reset clears the device so the next person can start setup from the beginning.
- Start the reset only after you have decided that you no longer need the streamer’s locally stored settings and data.
- Use the TV-menu method if navigation works; use the rear-button method if it does not.
- Wait for the reset to finish rather than unplugging the device partway through.
- Stop at the initial setup screen unless you are setting the device up for its new owner yourself.
- If you also need to remove household links, use Google Home’s device-removal controls separately and understand that Google says associated data and other home-member links are affected.
A factory reset is the documented preparation step for a returned or transferred device. It does not, by itself, delete the Google Account that you may use to set up another streamer.

The Factory Reset option is missing or cannot be selected
Confirm that you are following the path profile > All settings > System > About > Factory Reset. If the interface remains unusable, switch to the rear-button method while the streamer is connected and powered on.
The button reset does not appear to start
Check that the streamer has power and remains connected to the TV. Hold the rear button for the full 10–12 seconds and watch for the LED to begin blinking yellow. Do not release at the first sign of a temporary light change; release when the LED becomes solid white, as specified in Google’s instructions.
You released the button too early
If the required LED sequence did not occur, the reset may not have been initiated. Wait for the device to return to a stable state, then repeat the button procedure with the full hold time and the yellow-to-white LED cues.
The streamer restarts but setup does not continue
Keep the device powered, verify the TV input, and try the setup route that best matches your access: Google Home app or TV and remote. During setup, confirm the Wi-Fi details and complete the Google Account sign-in prompt.
You are unsure whether the account was deleted
Remember the distinction: the reset clears the streamer, while the account remains an account you can use elsewhere. The clearest confirmation is the post-reset setup screen, which asks you to sign in with a Google Account again. If you need to manage a session or household link, use the separate Google Account or Google Home controls rather than repeating the hardware reset.
Frequently asked questions
Is a factory reset reversible?
No. Google warns that the action clears your data and cannot be undone. Make sure you are ready to erase the streamer before confirming.
Can I sign in with the same Google Account after resetting?
Yes. Google’s setup flow asks for a Google Account after the reset, and you can use the account that was previously connected.

Which reset method should I use if the menu is frozen?
Use the rear button. Keep the powered-on streamer connected to the TV, hold the button for 10–12 seconds, wait for blinking yellow, and release when the LED turns solid white.
Do I need to remove the device from Google Home before factory-resetting?
No. Factory reset and Google Home removal are distinct actions. Remove it from Google Home only if you specifically want to unlink it from your account and other home members and delete associated Home data.
Does removing all accounts from the streamer also reset it?
Google says that removing all accounts from the streaming device causes a factory reset. Treat that account route as a wipe, not as a temporary profile change.
Is the reset different from resetting an older Chromecast?
Yes. Use the Google TV Streamer (4K) instructions here. Do not assume an older Chromecast’s button timing applies to this device.
Do I have to pay to reset the streamer?
No. Google’s documented methods require no paid tool or accessory. You only need access to the streamer, its power, and the relevant TV, remote, or setup device.
What if I only want to fix one app?
Try Google’s less-destructive sequence first: check Wi-Fi, check for system updates, restart, verify the active profile, and clear the affected app’s data. A factory reset is broader and erases device data.
Key points to remember
- A factory reset erases data on the Google TV Streamer and cannot be undone.
- It is not the same as deleting your Google Account.
- The TV-menu path is profile > All settings > System > About > Factory Reset.
- The button method requires a powered-on streamer; hold the rear button 10–12 seconds, wait for blinking yellow, then release at solid white.
- Afterward, set up through Google Home or the TV and remote, signing in with a Google Account when prompted.
- Removing the streamer from Google Home is a separate action with broader account and household-link consequences.
- Try Wi-Fi, updates, a restart, profile verification, and app-data clearing before using a full reset for troubleshooting.
- No purchase or special accessory is needed to complete the reset.

The Bottom Line
A Google TV Streamer (4K) factory reset wipes the streamer, not your Google Account. Use profile > All settings > System > About > Factory Reset, or hold the rear button for 10–12 seconds and release when the LED turns solid white. Afterward, set up through Google Home or the TV and Voice Remote and sign in again.
