Begin with the claim, the original file or URL, its date and context, and the earliest source you can find. Then check provenance such as C2PA Content Credentials, seek independent corroboration, and use detector scores only as supporting evidence. A watermark, a detector result, or a convincing appearance can indicate how a file was made; none by itself proves that the depicted event is true.
Use a claim-first workflow
Suspicious media creates two different questions that are often confused: How was this file produced? and Did the event or statement actually happen? Provenance and forensic tools mainly address the first question. Factual verification addresses the second. Keep them separate throughout your investigation.

- Preserve the original. Save the post URL, download the highest-quality file available, record the account name, publication time, caption, and surrounding comments, and note whether the platform labels it as edited or synthetic.
- Write down the exact claim. Quote the caption or spoken assertion, identify who supposedly acted, where and when it happened, and what the file is being used to prove.
- Trace the source. Find the earliest accessible upload and determine whether it came from an accountable organization, a named witness, an anonymous account, or a repost chain.
- Inspect provenance. Look for Content Credentials or another verifiable record of origin and editing history. Treat a positive record as evidence about the associated creation or export path, not as proof of the story.
- Corroborate independently. Seek contemporaneous reporting, official records, geolocated observations, or named witnesses who are not copying the same post.
- Use detection tools last. Ask what the detector tested, which generators and media types it covers, how the sample was processed, and what a false positive or false negative would cost.
This order prevents a plausible-looking file from becoming the evidence for its own caption. A video can be genuine footage from the wrong year; an authentic voice can be edited into a false conversation; and a generated image can depict a real location while inventing the event.
Preserve evidence before opening or transforming it
Every transformation can remove clues. Cropping, taking a screenshot, downloading through a messaging app, converting formats, or re-encoding a video may strip metadata and alter compression patterns. Preserve the first version you can access before doing any analysis.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Copy the full URL, including any post identifier, and capture the page as it appeared.
- Download the original file rather than relying on a screen recording or screenshot.
- Keep an untouched copy and work only on duplicates.
- Record the file name, extension, byte size, dimensions, frame rate, audio channels, and download time.
- Save captions, transcripts, subtitles, comments, and the account’s profile information separately; they may change or disappear.
- Hashing the untouched file can demonstrate that later analysis used the same bytes, although a hash does not establish that the content is truthful.
If you only have a screenshot or a re-encoded clip, say so in your notes. The missing original limits what provenance and forensic checks can establish; it does not make the material authentic or fake.
Define the claim and its context
Separate what is visible from what is asserted
Describe observable details without adopting the caption. “A person in a red jacket stands beside a damaged vehicle” is an observation. “The mayor was attacked outside city hall yesterday” adds identity, location, date, and causation that require separate evidence. This distinction exposes which parts of a post need verification.
Check time, place and sequence
Look for shadows, weather, uniforms, road signs, architecture, language, event schedules, and other time-and-place clues. They can reveal that a real clip has been recaptioned. Compare the claimed date with the earliest upload date, but remember that an upload can occur long after recording.

Identify the requested level of certainty
Decide whether you need to know that a file came from a particular tool, that a person is who the post says they are, that frames were altered, or that the underlying event occurred. Those are different tests. A provenance record may answer an origin question while leaving identity and factual accuracy unresolved.
Trace the earliest source and seek independent corroboration
Start with the oldest version you can locate. Search distinctive phrases from the caption, reverse-search still frames, inspect repost timestamps, and compare edits between copies. The earliest available source is not automatically reliable, but it gives you the best chance of finding the creator, an unedited version, or contemporaneous context.

Rank sources by accountability
- Strongest starting points: primary documents, official statements, identifiable journalists, institutions that publish contact details, and witnesses who explain how they obtained the material.
- Useful but limited: established outlets repeating one another, anonymous eyewitness accounts, and expert commentary that lacks access to the original file.
- Weak starting points: meme accounts, engagement-farming pages, posts that disable replies, and chains in which every account cites the same unsourced clip.
Independent corroboration means more than multiple URLs. Five posts that all copied one video are one source. Look for separate recordings, records created at the time, statements from organizations with direct responsibility, or witnesses who can provide verifiable details. Accountable sources should be able to explain what they know, when they learned it, and what remains uncertain.
Inspect Content Credentials and other provenance records
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) defines a standard for Content Credentials: a tamper-evident structure that can record an asset’s origin, edits, and actions taken by participating tools. Such a record can help establish the history and authenticity of a digital asset. C2PA also cautions that “provenance information alone cannot tell you whether the digital content is true, accurate or factual.”
What a positive credential can establish
A verified credential may connect a file to a participating camera, editor, generative system, or export path and show declared edits. That is useful when you need to know whether an image was generated, which application handled it, or whether a clip passed through a particular workflow. Read the complete manifest rather than relying on a badge: check the signer, timestamps, actions, and whether the record covers the file you received.
What it cannot establish
A valid chain does not prove that the caption is correct, that a depicted person consented, that the recording is legal to publish, or that the scene is shown in the right context. A creator can attach accurate provenance to a fabricated scene, and a real recording can be paired with a false description after export.
How to interpret common outcomes
| Observation | What it supports | What it does not prove | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verified Content Credentials are present | The file has a signed record linking it to declared origins or edits. | That the depicted event, identity, caption, or conclusion is factual. | Read the manifest, identify the signer and actions, then verify the claim independently. |
| No credential is detected | Nothing about authorship can be established from the missing signal. | That a human made the file or that no editing occurred. | Check whether the product and format support credentials and whether the file was transformed. |
| The credential cannot be verified or the chain is broken | The integrity or continuity of the recorded history needs investigation. | A definitive conclusion that the content is fabricated. | Locate an earlier copy, compare hashes or manifests, and seek the creator’s explanation. |
Credentials are optional. They may be absent when a product does not support them, when an unaware editor saves the file, or when a platform strips metadata. Treat them as one evidence layer, not a universal authenticity seal.

Why a missing watermark or signal proves little
Visible watermarks can be cropped, covered, or removed. Invisible signals can be lost through compression, screenshots, format conversion, trimming, or other processing. A file may also come from a product or media type that the checker does not support. OpenAI explains that a file with no detected signal could still have been generated or exported by OpenAI for these reasons.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe reverse inference is equally unsafe: detecting a signal does not confirm that the content is accurate, unedited, legally owned, or presented in the correct context. A signal is evidence about a supported tool or export path. It is not a truth guarantee, and absence is not evidence of human authorship.
Use AI detectors as supporting evidence, not a verdict
“AI detector” can describe very different systems. Some classify whether text resembles generated writing; others estimate whether an image, audio clip, or video contains synthetic artifacts. A score is meaningful only in relation to the exact task, model versions, media type, and processing conditions used to produce it.
| Approach | Primary question | Strengths | Important failure modes | How to use the result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Content Credentials or provenance checker | Which participating tool or workflow created or edited this file? | Can provide signed origin and edit history when the chain is intact. | Optional adoption, unsupported formats, metadata stripping, and broken chains. | Use to document origin and history; still verify the factual claim. |
| Classifier or AI detector | Does the sample resemble synthetic material under this test? | Can flag patterns for further examination. | False positives, false negatives, unfamiliar generators, language or genre effects, and unrealistic test data. | Report the tool, version, task, score, and limitations; never present the score as proof. |
| Reverse-source and frame search | Where did this image or clip appear earlier, and with what context? | Can expose old footage, altered captions, and repost chains. | Private posts, unindexed pages, crops, and newly created material may not be found. | Compare dates, captions, edits, and the earliest accountable source. |
| Identity verification | Is the person shown or heard really the claimed individual? | Known-channel callbacks and direct confirmation can test identity. | Caller ID and familiar voices can be spoofed; a real person can be impersonated in edited media. | Confirm through a pre-existing channel and document who answered. |
| Manipulation analysis | Which regions, frames, or tracks may have been altered? | Can focus review on suspected edits rather than judging the whole file. | Re-encoding and sophisticated edits can hide traces; an unaltered file can still carry a false caption. | Use as a lead, then compare with originals and independent evidence. |
NIST’s Guardians program calls for evaluations using representative “dirty,” post-processed evidence rather than pristine laboratory samples. It separates authenticity detection, identity verification, manipulation localization, source verification, and provenance reconstruction. NIST reports classifier performance with receiver-operating-characteristic curves and area under the curve (AUC), not a universal consumer accuracy percentage. No authoritative source establishes one accuracy number that applies to every detector, generator, language, or platform.
Questions to ask before trusting a score
- What exact task was tested: origin, identity, manipulation, or factual verification?
- Which generators, camera pipelines, languages, and content genres appeared in the evaluation set?
- Did the test include screenshots, social-media compression, cropping, re-recording, subtitles, or other realistic post-processing?
- What threshold produced the result, and how often did that threshold misclassify genuine and synthetic samples?
- What are the consequences if this particular decision is wrong?
For a low-stakes curiosity, a detector flag can justify closer inspection. For an accusation, emergency alert, employment decision, or safety action, require corroboration and a review by someone who can inspect the original evidence.

Fact-check suspicious images
- Save the highest-resolution file and inspect its metadata on a duplicate. Metadata can be missing or rewritten, so treat it as a clue rather than proof.
- Magnify hands, jewelry, text, reflections, shadows, repeated textures, and object boundaries. Anomalies can indicate generation or editing, but compression and resizing can create similar defects.
- Run reverse searches on the full image and distinctive crops. Compare the earliest matches, captions, weather, clothing, and landmarks.
- Check whether signs, logos, maps, and architecture fit the claimed location and date. Ask whether the scene could be a composite of real elements.
- Look for Content Credentials and record the signer and declared actions if present.
- Find an independent photograph, video, official statement, or named witness before accepting the event claim.
Do not treat a clean-looking image as evidence that an event occurred. Photorealism is an output quality, not a provenance record.
Fact-check suspicious video
- Preserve the complete file, including audio, frame rate, and duration. A short repost may omit the lead-in or aftermath that changes the meaning.
- Extract several frames at regular intervals and reverse-search them separately. Cropping, mirroring, subtitles, and speed changes can defeat a single search.
- Check continuity: lip movement against speech, shadows across cuts, reflections, object positions, ambient sound, and whether the camera motion matches the scene.
- Compare the claimed date with weather, seasonal light, event schedules, uniforms, road works, and other time-sensitive details.
- Search for longer versions from the earliest uploader and ask whether the uploader can explain where and when it was recorded.
- Inspect any provenance manifest and then corroborate the event through independent reporting or records.
Frame-level artifacts are leads, not verdicts. Re-encoding, low light, motion blur, and stabilization can produce irregular edges or audio drift in authentic footage.
Fact-check suspicious text
Text classifiers are especially sensitive to topic, language, length, editing, and the model’s familiarity with a writing style. A polished paragraph may be human-written, AI-assisted, translated, or heavily edited; an awkward paragraph may still be human. Preserve the original post and revision history when available.
- Verify every factual assertion against primary documents or accountable sources.
- Check quotations, names, dates, statistics, and links independently; generated text can invent plausible citations.
- Compare the author’s prior work, publication process, and stated use of writing tools without treating style similarity as proof.
- Use a text detector only as a prompt for review, and record its threshold and known limitations.
Factual checking remains necessary even when a detector says “human,” because a human author can still publish false information.

A familiar voice is not an identity credential. Voice-cloning systems can produce convincing clips, and caller ID can be forged. The Federal Trade Commission describes two useful responses: authenticate people before a sensitive interaction and evaluate existing clips after the fact.
Best Value
Before taking action
- End the call or pause the conversation if money, credentials, access codes, or urgent secrecy is requested.
- Call the person back through a phone number or messaging account you already had, not a number supplied in the suspicious message.
- Use a pre-agreed family or workplace code phrase for emergencies, and ask a question that an impersonator cannot answer from public information.
- Confirm the request with a second responsible person or the relevant organization.
After receiving a clip
- Save the original audio and the message metadata before forwarding or converting it.
- Transcribe the precise claim and note background sounds, edits, abrupt room changes, and repeated phrases.
- Compare the clip with known recordings only as a technical clue; voice similarity alone does not establish identity.
- Verify the speaker and the underlying event through a known channel and independent records.
Do not rely on caller ID, a familiar accent, or emotional urgency. If the potential harm is financial, medical, legal, or physical, treat the message as unverified until the person is authenticated out of band.
Document your conclusion and communicate uncertainty
Keep an evidence log that another reviewer could follow. Record the original URL, file hash or download details, claimed date and location, earliest source found, provenance results, detector name and settings, corroborating sources, contradictions, and unanswered questions.
Use precise labels rather than binary language when the evidence is incomplete:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Verified provenance: a credential links the file to a declared tool or workflow, while the factual claim remains separately assessed.
- Likely manipulated: multiple independent indicators point to editing, but the original is unavailable or the chain cannot be reproduced.
- Unverified: the claim lacks adequate independent evidence; this does not mean it is false.
- False or misleading: reliable evidence contradicts the claimed date, place, identity, event, or wording.
State what would change your assessment, such as an original upload, a full-length recording, a signed credential, or confirmation from an accountable witness. Avoid repeating the unverified claim in a headline or thumbnail where readers may see it without the qualification.
Common mistakes that derail a fact-check
- “There is no watermark, so it is real.” Signals can be unsupported, stripped, or degraded.
- “The detector says 98 percent, so it is fake.” A score has meaning only for the tested task, data, threshold, and processing conditions.
- “Several accounts posted it.” Reposts are not independent corroboration.
- “The file has valid credentials, so the caption is true.” Provenance describes origin and edits, not the accuracy of a story.
- “The voice sounds exactly right.” Familiarity is not authentication; use a known channel.
- “I will investigate after downloading and editing it.” Transformations can destroy the very metadata and context you need.
- “One odd pixel proves generation.” Compression, resizing, lighting, and camera processing can create artifacts in genuine media.
A practical decision rule
Pause publication or action when the claim could cause substantial harm and you have only one unaccountable source, no intact original, no independent corroboration, and no reliable identity confirmation. Continue gathering evidence rather than forcing a yes-or-no label. When provenance, source accountability, independent corroboration, and media analysis point in the same direction, explain how each layer supports the conclusion and which uncertainty remains.
