Do not decide whether a political post is true from one clue. Preserve the original, separate its claims, trace when and where the media first appeared, inspect the file and scene, and corroborate the result with primary records and independent reporting. A real photograph can carry a false date or caption, while a polished video can be edited without obvious visual glitches. The reliable answer comes from a chain of evidence, with uncertainty stated plainly.
Start with a chain of evidence
Fact-checking is not the same as asking whether an image “looks real.” You are testing several different propositions: whether the pixels or recording were altered, whether the file is being shown in its original context, whether the claimed date and location are correct, and whether a quoted statement is represented accurately. Treat each proposition as a separate claim.

1. Preserve the post before it changes
Save the post URL and, where lawful, the original file. Record the account or page name, the exact caption, the time you saw it, the claimed date and location, and any visible engagement or repost information. Capture a screenshot that includes the surrounding text, but do not rely on the screenshot as your only copy. Platforms may delete posts, change captions, crop media, or strip file information.

2. Split the post into checkable claims
Write each claim in a single sentence. “This is a photograph of a protest” is different from “the protest happened in the capital on 12 May,” “the crowd size was 100,000,” and “the politician is visible in the front row.” A post can contain an authentic image and a false location, or a genuine quote followed by an invented statistic. Testing the claims separately prevents one true detail from making the rest appear true.

3. Trace the earliest credible appearance
Search a distinctive caption, a sequence of unusual words, the username, and any visible slogan. Compare dates and captions across results. The earliest indexed copy is a lead, not automatic proof: an old upload can itself be a repost. Look for an original photographer, broadcaster, eyewitness, government agency, or event participant who can explain when and where the media was created.
4. Compare the file with prior versions
Note changes between copies: a new crop, added text, mirrored orientation, altered speed, removed watermark, or different audio. A later copy may be lower quality but still preserve a distinctive sign or background that identifies the source. Save each useful version and note its URL and date so your conclusion can be audited.
5. Test the scene and the context
Check landmarks, road markings, language, uniforms, flags, weather, shadows, architecture, terrain, and the position of the sun. These details can disprove a claimed place or date, but a visual match alone does not establish the entire story. Ask whether construction, seasonal foliage, clothing, or a known event schedule fits the claim.
6. Corroborate with independent evidence
Prefer full speeches, official records, court filings, legislative documents, government datasets, contemporaneous broadcasts, and on-the-record witnesses. Independent reputable reporting is useful when it identifies its own sources and provides enough detail to compare. Several accounts that copied one viral post are not independent confirmation.
7. Record what remains unknown
Write down which facts are established, which are only likely, and which cannot be determined. “The photograph existed online by 4 June, but its original date and location are unverified” is more accurate than either “real” or “fake.” Do not share an unresolved claim as established fact.
How to fact-check a political image
Run a reverse-image search in more than one way
Start with the uncropped original if you have it. Use Google Images, Bing, TinEye, or another reverse-search service, then repeat with distinctive crops: a sign, face, uniform patch, unusual building, or background object. Different services index different pages, so one empty result means little. Compare the oldest indexed appearances, captions, dates, and locations rather than simply counting matches.

Search results can reveal that a current campaign graphic is an old disaster photograph, that a crowd image was taken at another country’s rally, or that a supposedly new image appeared years earlier. A reverse search finds prior appearances and possible sources; it does not determine whether the surrounding political claim is true.

Zoom in on text, hands, jewelry, repeated textures, reflections, and object boundaries. AI-generated or heavily edited images may show impossible geometry, inconsistent lettering, duplicated patterns, abrupt lighting changes, or objects that change shape between nearby areas. Compression, resizing, low light, and platform processing can create similar artifacts. Treat visual anomalies as reasons to investigate, not as a verdict.
Check the caption, date, and place independently
Once you find an earlier copy, read its full caption and surrounding article. A photograph can be authentic while being paired with a false date, place, or event. Compare signs and language with local maps or contemporaneous coverage, and check weather or shadows against the claimed time when those details matter. If the image came from a wire service or official account, look for the original caption and any later correction.
Use metadata as supporting evidence
If you obtained the original file, inspect EXIF fields for camera model, capture time, GPS coordinates, orientation, and editing software. Metadata may be missing, rewritten, or stripped during upload, and a determined editor can alter it. A matching timestamp or location can support other evidence; it cannot prove that the depicted event occurred as described. A blank metadata panel is not evidence that an image is fake.
How to fact-check a political video
Save the source and extract keyframes
Record the video URL, uploader, caption, upload time, and claimed event. Where lawful, save the file. Extract several still frames, including the opening, middle, and closing portions, plus any moment showing a sign, landmark, vehicle, or unusual person. Reverse-search each keyframe. A single frame may be too generic, while another can reveal an older upload with a different caption.

Check chronology and edits
Watch for hard cuts, inserted clips, speed changes, frozen frames, duplicated sections, and audio that continues across a visual jump. Compare frame by frame around a suspicious transition. A video can show a real protest but splice together scenes from different hours or locations. Establish the order of events before interpreting what a speaker or crowd appears to be responding to.
Transcribe and verify the audio
Write down the exact words, including pauses and qualifiers. Check whether the mouth movements match the speech, whether room noise changes at a cut, and whether applause or sirens continue unnaturally. A clean-sounding voiceover can be laid over unrelated footage. Search distinctive phrases in quotation marks and locate the complete recording or transcript.
Identify the original filmer or uploader
Look for the earliest credible upload and contact information for the person who recorded it when possible. Ask what device was used, when and where it was filmed, and whether the file is an unedited original. A firsthand account is valuable, but it still needs comparison with landmarks, weather, event schedules, and independent records.
How to verify a political quote
Demand the exact wording
Do not fact-check a clipped sentence from a meme or a short video in isolation. Preserve the precise words, spelling, punctuation where relevant, speaker, role, venue, date, and medium. The Associated Press policy states: “Because it is words being examined, we need exact quotes.” A transcript, recording, legislative record, court filing, or official statement is stronger than a paraphrase.
Recover the missing context
Find the full speech, interview, debate, press conference, bill, filing, or dataset. Read the sentences before and after the excerpt and note whether a question, conditional phrase, joke, translation, or correction was omitted. A quote may be authentic but misleading because the clip removes a qualification or changes the subject being discussed.
Compare the claim with primary records
If a speaker cites a law, vote, budget figure, scientific result, or government action, check the underlying document. Confirm the relevant date, jurisdiction, measurement, and definition. Then compare with independent reputable reporting that explains disagreements or later corrections. Do not treat a speaker’s confidence, account badge, or a viral transcript as evidence of accuracy.

Describe the result precisely
Political statements are not always binary. AP recognizes categories such as false, exaggerated, a stretch, selectively using data, partly true, and mostly true. Choose wording that reflects the evidence: “The speaker said these words, but the cited statistic uses a different year,” for example. Separate whether the quote is genuine from whether its factual claim is correct.
What metadata and Content Credentials can—and cannot—prove
EXIF and platform metadata
EXIF can preserve technical details from a camera, including a possible capture time or GPS position. Social networks frequently recompress files and remove those fields. Editors can also rewrite them. Treat metadata as one supporting signal alongside the file’s history, scene consistency, and independent corroboration.
C2PA and signed provenance
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity defines provenance as “the facts about the history of a piece of digital content.” A valid Content Credential can record who signed or edited a file and whether later edits updated its manifest. That history can help distinguish an original camera file from a version exported by an editing application.
C2PA describes credentials as optional and complementary to media literacy and fact-checking. Missing credentials do not make a file false. A valid credential also does not prove that the scene happened as depicted or that the accompanying political claim is accurate; it describes a signed history of the content, not the truth of the event.

Professional newsroom systems can combine these approaches. AP Verify, introduced as a unified workflow, brings together reverse-image search, frame-by-frame analysis, social listening, geolocation, transcription, and AI-assisted features. AP Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Gianluca D’Aniello described it as a way to assess photos, video, and text in one place. The interface may save time, but the evidentiary logic remains provenance, chronology, physical and contextual consistency, and independent corroboration.

Use an evidence-led structure
- State the narrow conclusion. Say whether the file is authentic, altered, recycled, miscaptioned, or unresolved, and identify which claim that conclusion covers.
- Show the chronology. Give the earliest credible appearance you found and explain how it differs from the viral post.
- Explain the strongest corroboration. Identify the primary record, witness, location clue, or independent report that supports or contradicts the claim.
- List material limits. Note missing originals, uncertain dates, unavailable records, or details that could not be verified.
- Preserve the evidence trail. Keep URLs, screenshots, downloaded files, transcripts, search dates, and notes so another person can repeat the checks.
Use calibrated language
“Authentic image, false caption” means the pixels appear to match an earlier source but the current date or place is wrong. “Edited” should identify what changed when possible: a cropped frame, inserted text, altered audio, or composited person. “AI-generated” requires more than a strange hand or a detector score; describe the specific provenance, source history, or multiple independent indicators supporting that assessment. If the evidence is mixed, say “not established” rather than forcing a binary label.
Common scenarios and the right next move
“Is this political photo real?”
Download or preserve the highest-quality version, reverse-search the full image and distinctive crops, compare the oldest captions, inspect signs and landmarks, and check the original photographer or agency. Then test the date and location separately from whether the pixels were edited.
“Was this video filmed at the protest?”
Extract keyframes, search each one, inspect cuts and audio continuity, transcribe chants or speeches, and compare the scene with event schedules, maps, weather, and independent footage. A match to the protest’s general appearance is not enough if the clip was recorded at another rally.
“Is this quote from the politician real?”
Find the complete recording or transcript, preserve the exact wording, identify the venue and date, and check the cited law, vote, statistic, or statement in the primary record. Distinguish a genuine quotation from the truth of what it asserts.

“Can a blue-check badge, detector, or one search result settle it?”
No. Account badges indicate an account status, not the truth of a post. AI detectors can produce false positives and false negatives, and reverse-search results depend on indexing. Use each as a lead within the broader chain of evidence.
A practical stopping rule
Stop when you can answer four questions with documented evidence: Where did the file or quote first appear? When and where was it created? Is the physical and contextual story consistent? What independent primary material confirms or contradicts the claim? If one answer remains open, publish the limits with the conclusion. More searching can add confidence, but it cannot turn missing evidence into certainty.
