Write the claim exactly, identify its jurisdiction and date, check the responsible election office or primary record, inspect the full context of any media, and distinguish unofficial results from certified outcomes. Procedures vary by country, state, locality, and election, so never act on a generic post when an official notice is available.
Why election fact-checking requires a jurisdiction and a date
A statement about voting can be true in one place and false in another, or correct for one election but outdated for the next. Early voting, voter identification, registration deadlines, provisional ballots, polling hours, ballot access, counting rules, and equipment all depend on the authority running that election.

Start by writing down the location and election involved: country, state or province, county or municipality, election name, and election date. If a post does not identify those details, treat that omission as a warning rather than filling in the gaps yourself.
The FBI warns that publicly available election information may be inaccurate or deliberately deceptive. Its practical advice is: “Always consider the source of voting information. Ask yourself, ‘Can I trust this information?’ Look for official notices from election offices and verify the information you found is accurate.” That is a verification rule, not a claim that every official page is permanent; recheck the page as the election approaches.

The verification workflow
1. Preserve the claim exactly
Copy the complete wording, not just the most alarming sentence. Save the date and time it was posted or said, the account or speaker, attached images or videos, and any link. Record whether it is presented as a fact, an opinion, a prediction, a joke, or a campaign appeal.
Small changes can alter the meaning. “You cannot vote after 7 p.m.” is a procedural assertion. “This candidate will win” is a prediction. “The policy is unfair” is an opinion. Only the first type can be settled directly by a voting rule.
2. Classify what must be checked
Use the category to choose the right evidence:
- Eligibility or qualifications: who may register or vote, residency, age, citizenship, or disqualifying conditions.
- Registration: whether a person is registered, how to update a record, and the registration deadline.
- Voter identification: accepted documents, alternatives, and rules for people who lack them.
- Time, place, and method: polling location, opening hours, early voting, mail voting, drop boxes, and accessibility.
- Candidate or ballot status: who filed, who appears on the ballot, the office sought, and ballot wording.
- Counting and results: reported totals, recounts, canvassing, certification, and challenges.
- Media authenticity: whether a photograph, recording, screenshot, or AI-generated item is genuine and complete.
- Equipment or security: claims about a particular voting system, test, audit, or chain of custody.
3. Find the authority responsible for that election
For a procedural question, the election office with legal responsibility for that election outranks a campaign post, a forwarded message, or a generic explainer. In the United States, state and local election offices are the best sources for polling places, hours, registration status, ballot information, and local procedures. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and USAGov help voters find those offices; they are navigation points, not substitutes for the local record.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check that the page names the specific election and has a current publication or update date. A page describing a previous general election may remain online after its deadlines have passed. If two official pages appear inconsistent, call the office using a number published on its official site and ask which instruction applies to your address and election.
4. Trace candidate claims to primary evidence
Separate an official fact from an argument. Filing records, ballot certifications, legislative records, court documents, budgets, and complete speeches can establish what happened. A candidate’s own advertisement establishes what the campaign is saying, not whether the statement is true.
For “Who are the candidates?” use the ballot or candidate list maintained by the responsible election authority. For a claim about a candidate’s vote, bill, employment, financial disclosure, or public statement, locate the underlying record or full recording. Then consult an independent fact-checking organization if one has examined the claim. The UK Electoral Commission advises readers to use fact-checkers for the accuracy of a claim or the authenticity of content, while the election authority remains the source for process information.

5. Test the context of viral media
Do not treat a polished graphic, screenshot, short clip, or AI answer as evidence by itself. Find the earliest available copy, identify when and where it was created, and look for the full recording or original document.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Check whether the image or video is from the election and location being claimed.
- Look for a longer version that may change the meaning of a clipped sentence.
- Compare visible signs, weather, clothing, timestamps, and landmarks with independent reporting.
- Search for the original account or organization rather than relying on a repost.
- Ask whether the supposed source actually had access to the event or document.
Microsoft’s voter AI-literacy guidance notes that AI can create convincing fake images, audio, and video. Check who published the item, what evidence accompanies it, and whether the evidence supports the specific assertion. An AI system’s confident answer is not an original source.
6. Check results in the correct order
Election-night numbers are often reported before every ballot is processed. A display can be accurate as a snapshot while still being unofficial. Do not call a result final merely because all precincts are shown as reporting.
The EAC’s explanation of the U.S. process distinguishes reporting, canvassing, and certification. The canvass aggregates and confirms every valid ballot counted, including mail, military and overseas, early-voting, Election Day, and provisional ballots. Certification follows the legally defined review. The EAC page on election results, canvass, and certification lists July 30, 2026; use the corresponding records from the jurisdiction for the election you are checking.
For a result claim, label the status precisely: “reported,” “unofficial,” “under canvass,” “recount pending,” or “certified.” Other countries use different terms and schedules, so do not import the U.S. sequence into a UK or Indian election.
7. Compare sources instead of counting them
When sources disagree, assess them on five axes:
| Question | What to prefer |
|---|---|
| Does the source control this election? | The responsible national, state, county, municipal, or other legally designated authority. |
| Is it current? | A page or notice covering the named election and date, with a recent update where available. |
| Can you inspect the evidence? | A link to the full record, filing, data set, transcript, or recording rather than an unexplained verdict. |
| What kind of claim is it? | Use an election office for procedure, a primary record for a candidate’s factual claim, and original media plus corroboration for authenticity. |
| Does an independent fact-check show its work? | Prefer an explanation that quotes or links the underlying evidence over a label without supporting material. |
8. Publish a correction that helps people act
State the conclusion, jurisdiction, and election date. Explain the decisive evidence in plain language and provide the primary source’s name or official page. If the claim could change a voter’s action, put the correct time, place, or method in the correction itself.

Do not repeat an unsupported false statement as a headline. A useful format is: “For the 2026 [election] in [jurisdiction], the official election office says [correct instruction]. The circulating post is wrong because [specific conflict]. Check your own status at the office’s voter-services page.”
Urgent claims about time, place, method, or eligibility
False procedural information can prevent an eligible person from voting. Treat messages about a changed election date, a closed polling place, a new identification requirement, disqualification, or a supposedly invalid voting method as high priority.
The FBI identifies deliberately lying about the time, date, or place of an election to stop qualified voters from voting as voter suppression. It also identifies false claims about voting qualifications or methods as election misinformation. Verify these statements with the responsible election office before sharing them, even when they come from a familiar account or political group.
For a U.S. claim that appears intentionally designed to deceive voters about the time, place, or manner of voting, FBI guidance directs people to report suspected election crimes through the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Use the appropriate local authority in other countries. If someone faces imminent physical danger, contact emergency services rather than attempting to investigate personally.
Country-specific source routes
United States
Start with the state or local election office for your address. Confirm registration, polling place, hours, ballot style, early-voting dates, mail-ballot status, accessibility, and provisional-ballot rules there. The EAC’s voter resources and USAGov’s voting pages can route you to the correct office.
Do not assume that a rule described by the EAC applies identically in every state. The EAC explains that early voting, provisional ballots, observation, and other procedures vary. A national summary is useful for orientation; the local office controls the instruction you must follow.

United Kingdom
Use the Electoral Commission for guidance about electoral processes and campaign material, then confirm local practical details with the relevant council or electoral registration office. A campaign leaflet is not automatically reliable because it carries a candidate’s name. For a disputed claim, consult a fact-checking organization that shows the evidence and distinguish its assessment from the authority’s procedural instructions.

India
The Election Commission of India (ECI) provides voter services for registration status, polling location, and candidate information. Its voter guidance uses direct questions such as “Where do I vote?” and “Who are the candidates?” Use the ECI voter-services site, app, or helpline for those tasks rather than adapting a U.S. or UK workflow.
ECI’s “Myth Vs Reality” material and its FAQ on electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter-verifiable paper audit trails (VVPAT) address the Indian system. Those explanations are evidence about the equipment and checks described by ECI; they are not proof about voting machines used in another country.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check common claim types
“The polling place or hours changed”
- Identify the address, election, and date in the message.
- Open the official voter-lookup or polling-place service for that jurisdiction.
- Compare the location and hours shown for your address, including any early-voting or accessibility information.
- If the message says the location changed, call the election office using its published number and ask whether the notice is genuine.
“You are not registered” or “You cannot vote because of a new rule”
Never infer an individual’s status from a screenshot or a list shared online. Use the official voter-status service and follow the office’s instructions for correcting an error, updating an address, or voting provisionally where that option exists. Eligibility rules are jurisdiction-specific; an explainer from another state or country cannot settle the question.
“This person is on the ballot”
Check the certified candidate or ballot record for the named contest. Distinguish a declared candidate, a filed candidate, a qualified candidate, a withdrawn candidate, and a person whose name appears only in a campaign announcement. Ballot status can change under local law, so use the record for the specified election.

Best Value
“The election was stolen because the totals changed”
First identify whether the numbers are a live report, an unofficial count, a canvass result, a recount, or a certified outcome. Additions of mail, overseas, early, and provisional ballots can change a running total without indicating wrongdoing. For a specific allegation, ask for the affected jurisdiction, contest, time period, and documentary evidence, then consult official canvass, audit, recount, or court records.
“The voting machines cannot be trusted”
Ask which equipment, software version, jurisdiction, test, or audit the claim concerns. A general statement about one system cannot establish a fact about another. In India, consult ECI’s EVM/VVPAT explanations for the processes it documents. Elsewhere, use the responsible election authority’s equipment testing, audit, and certification records.
Recognizing weak verification
- Authority mismatch: a national article is used to answer a county-level polling-hour question.
- Stale timing: an old election guide is presented as current without checking its date.
- Screenshot dependence: a cropped image is treated as the underlying notice.
- Verdict without evidence: a post says “false” or “fraud” but supplies no record to inspect.
- Category error: a campaign promise is treated as an official election rule, or a live count as a certified result.
- Country substitution: a U.S., UK, or Indian procedure is silently generalized to another jurisdiction.
- False precision: a claim gives an exact time, number, or percentage without naming the contest, date, or measurement method.
A reusable fact-check worksheet
Copy this structure into your notes before deciding whether to share a claim:
| Field | Record |
|---|---|
| Exact claim | Quote the complete statement. |
| Posted or spoken | Date, time, platform, speaker, and original link. |
| Jurisdiction and election | Country, state or province, locality, contest, and election date. |
| Claim category | Procedure, eligibility, candidate, result, equipment, or media authenticity. |
| Responsible authority | Name of the election office or legally responsible body. |
| Primary evidence | Official notice, filing, ballot record, canvass, audit, transcript, or original media. |
| Independent check | Fact-check or corroborating source that explains its evidence. |
| Conclusion | Accurate, inaccurate, misleading, unverified, or not applicable to this election. |
| Action for readers | The correct official page, phone number, deadline, or safety instruction. |
What a responsible correction includes
A correction should be specific enough for a reader to verify independently. Name the election and locality, identify the responsible authority, state the correct fact, and explain the mismatch. Link or point to the underlying official record when a genuine URL is available. If the evidence is incomplete, say “unverified” rather than upgrading uncertainty to a definitive accusation.
Keep the correction proportional. A wrong polling-hour message needs the correct hours and an official contact route; it does not require a broad argument about election integrity. A manipulated video needs the original context and corroboration; it does not become authentic merely because several accounts repeat it.
Quick Recap
Final checklist before sharing
- Have I written the claim exactly, including its date and place?
- Do I know whether it is a fact, opinion, prediction, or campaign appeal?
- Did I use the authority responsible for this election?
- Is the official page current for this election, not an older contest?
- For a candidate claim, did I inspect the underlying record or full statement?
- For media, did I find the original and check the broader context?
- For results, did I distinguish reporting, canvassing, recounting, and certification?
- Am I keeping U.S., UK, Indian, and other procedures separate?
- Does my correction give readers a practical next step?
