How to Fact-Check AI-Generated Podcast Scripts

Treat every AI-generated podcast script as unverified copy. Fact-checking means separating the draft into individual factual claims, preserving each claim’s context, finding reliable evidence, and recording whether the claim is supported, contradicted, qualified, or still unverified. A fluent script, confident narration, detector score, or provenance signal cannot substitute for that work.

PBS Standards states: “Similarly, it is imperative that producers never assume that online materials or generative AI output is truthful or accurate.” Apply that principle to the script, the notes supporting its claims, and the final recorded performance—not just to the model that produced the first draft.

What you are checking—and what you are not

Factual verification asks whether a spoken assertion is true, adequately supported, and presented with the right limits. It is different from asking whether artificial intelligence helped write, edit, or voice the episode. Provenance and detection systems may provide clues about origin or content history, but they do not prove that a sentence is accurate.

Start with the words the audience will hear. A claim can be hidden in an anecdote, a transition, scene-setting, a summary, a headline, or a supposedly harmless adjective such as “first,” “largest,” or “only.” If a listener could reasonably take the wording as a factual assertion, put it on the checking list.

No reliable general percentage for factual errors in AI-generated podcast scripts is established here. Do not turn an AI-authorship score, a believability score, or a detector percentage into an error rate. Those are different measurements.

Use a claim-by-claim verification workflow

1. Freeze the version you are checking

Save the exact script file, model output, prompt if available, and date. Give the draft a version label before editing. When the narration changes later, create a new version rather than silently overwriting the old one. This prevents a source check from appearing to support wording that was added afterward.

2. Build a complete claim list

Read the script once for meaning, then read it again with a marker or spreadsheet. Extract every checkable assertion, including claims embedded in stories and comparisons. Separate compound sentences: “The policy began in 2019, covers three regions, and cut costs by 20 percent” is at least three claims, each needing its own evidence.

Record the exact sentence, not a paraphrase. Preserve the speaker, subject, time period, geography, population, unit, and comparison that appear in the original. A short quotation or statistic can become misleading when one of those qualifiers disappears.

3. Keep context attached

Copy the surrounding sentence or passage into the claim record. Note what came immediately before and after it, and whether the script presents the statement as fact, estimate, allegation, prediction, satire, or a character’s opinion. Podcast fact-checking guidance identifies transcription, annotation of check-worthy claims and contextual errors, and verification as linked tasks; checking an isolated sentence misses the way the episode frames it.

4. Find evidence suited to the claim

Begin with the most direct, authoritative record available. For a law, look for the enacted text or an official register. For a company announcement, locate the original filing or release and check what it actually says. For a historical or scientific statement, use the relevant institution, primary study, archival record, or specialist source. A search-result snippet, unsourced blog, or AI-generated summary is a lead, not proof.

Assess why a source is reliable, not merely whether it agrees with the draft. PBS guidance asks producers to identify the source for each asserted fact and explain why it is reliable. OSCE guidance lists official statements, verified news agencies, academic studies, and corroborated eyewitness accounts as possible evidence, with the appropriate choice depending on the claim.

5. Verify high-risk details separately

Give names, titles, dates, places, statistics, units, and translations their own checks. Confirm the spelling of every person and organization against an authoritative page or original document. Check that a title describes the person’s role during the period discussed. Recalculate percentages and totals, and ask whether a number is a count, rate, average, estimate, or a one-time result.

For a translated quotation, compare the wording with the original-language source where possible. If an exact equivalent does not exist, describe it as a translation or paraphrase rather than putting polished English in quotation marks. Verify pronunciation and transliteration with a reliable reference before recording.

6. Set the corroboration threshold

For breaking news or controversial assertions in PBS content, the general guidance is at least two authoritative, independent, on-the-record sources. This is PBS’s standard for its producers, not a universal legal rule or an automatic requirement for every type of statement. Independence matters: two articles that copy the same wire report are not two independent confirmations.

For a routine, stable fact, one strong primary source may be sufficient. For a disputed allegation, a fast-moving event, or a claim with serious consequences, use a higher threshold and make the disagreement audible. Record what each source establishes and where the evidence remains incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Record the decision and the reason

Use four practical outcomes: supported when the evidence matches the wording and scope; contradicted when reliable evidence conflicts with it; qualified when the core idea is plausible but needs a limit, date, attribution, or uncertainty; and not verified when adequate evidence cannot be found. “Not verified” is not a finding that the claim is false, but it is a reason not to state it as established fact.

8. Rewrite for speech

Put the necessary qualification into the words the audience will hear. Replace “X caused Y” with “X was associated with Y” when the evidence shows correlation only. Attribute an allegation to its source. Give the date or population when a statistic would otherwise sound universal. If a claim cannot meet your standard, remove it rather than allowing smooth narration to imply certainty.

Build a claim ledger that survives editing

A ledger creates a traceable link between spoken wording and evidence. Keep it with the episode’s production files and update it whenever the script changes.

Field What to capture Why it matters
Claim ID A stable number such as C-014 Lets editors discuss one assertion without ambiguity
Exact script wording The sentence as written, plus the surrounding passage Preserves qualifiers and framing
Claim type Person, date, place, statistic, quotation, causal claim, allegation, prediction, or translation Signals the kind of evidence and risk involved
Source Title, publisher, author or institution, URL if used internally, and publication or update date when available Shows where the support came from and when it was current
Evidence The relevant passage, table, data point, or time stamp Allows another editor to reproduce the check
Assessment Supported, contradicted, qualified, or not verified Makes the editorial decision explicit
Action Keep, rewrite, attribute, add a caveat, or remove Connects checking to the final script
Checker and date Who checked it and when Creates accountability and a refresh point for changing facts

For a hypothetical line such as “The program served 40,000 people in its first year,” the ledger should identify the program, define “served,” specify the first-year dates and geography, and show the source’s underlying count. If the source reports registrations rather than people who completed the program, rewrite the sentence instead of treating the numbers as interchangeable.

How to judge sources and conflicting accounts

Match source type to claim type

  • Official records: best for enacted rules, election results, budgets, appointments, filings, and dates of government action. Check whether the document is a proposal, announcement, or final record.
  • Academic or technical studies: inspect the study population, method, sample size, date, and whether the script has turned an association into a cause.
  • Verified news reporting: useful for developing events and on-the-ground confirmation; read the article for named sources, attribution, and updates rather than relying on a headline.
  • Eyewitness accounts: can establish what a person observed, but not automatically the wider explanation or cause. Corroborate them when the claim is consequential.
  • Secondary summaries: useful for finding leads, but trace important claims back to the underlying document.

Resolve disagreement explicitly

Do not select the source that merely fits the AI draft. Compare publication dates, definitions, geographic scope, and methods. One source may count incidents while another counts people; one may report preliminary data while another uses a revised total. If credible sources still disagree, say so, identify the competing figures, and explain which definition your script uses.

Numbers, quotations, translations, and names need extra care

Statistics and units

Copy the number, unit, denominator, time period, and source definition into the ledger. Recalculate percentages from the cited totals when possible. Ask whether “average” is a mean or median, whether a currency figure is nominal or adjusted, and whether a rate is per person, household, or event. In audio, write numbers in a way the host can read unambiguously and have a second person listen for a misplaced decimal or missing “million.”

Quotations

Locate the original wording and confirm that the speaker, date, and context match. Ellipses can remove a qualification; a translated quotation can introduce wording the speaker never used. If you cannot verify exact words, convert the line to an attributed paraphrase.

People, organizations, and places

Check spelling, accents, job titles, institutional names, and the location associated with an event. Organizations can change names, merge, or use different legal and public identities. A correct name with an outdated title is still a factual error.

Breaking news and controversial claims

Fast-moving stories are especially vulnerable to AI-generated confident detail. Establish a publication cutoff time, then check whether each source was updated afterward. Apply the PBS guidance of two authoritative, independent, on-the-record sources for breaking or controversial assertions in PBS-style work. Attribute preliminary information, identify what is alleged, and avoid presenting a developing count as final.

If the episode cannot wait for confirmation, narrow the wording: state what is confirmed, name the source, give the time, and tell listeners that details may change. Schedule a correction or update rather than leaving an obsolete claim in a continuing feed.

What AI detectors and provenance signals can—and cannot—tell you

NIST’s synthetic-content work treats provenance and authentication, labeling, and detection as distinct technical approaches. They can help investigate origin or content history; they are not factual sources for the claims in a script.

Official OpenAI guidance says a detected supported provenance signal indicates an association with supported OpenAI tools. It does not confirm that the content is accurate, unedited, legally owned, or presented in the right context. A missing signal does not prove that AI was not used: the content may be unsupported, old, transformed, or missing metadata.

NIST’s 2024 text-to-text pilot evaluated AI-authorship discrimination and believability. Its report explicitly separates those evaluations from factuality. Use detector output, if at all, as a provenance or workflow clue—not as permission to skip claim verification.

Check the final audio, not only the document

  1. Compare the locked script with the transcript generated from the finished recording. Mark every ad-lib, shortened sentence, changed number, and omitted qualification.
  2. Listen to names, dates, units, percentages, and translated terms. A correct document can become incorrect when a host misreads “15” as “50” or drops “approximately.”
  3. Check that music, clips, introductions, and outro copy do not imply a stronger conclusion than the verified script.
  4. Attach the final audio time stamp to each claim in the ledger so an editor can locate the spoken assertion quickly.
  5. Run the correction process on the audio version if a late change affects a factual claim; updating only the show notes leaves the original error available to listeners.

Choose workflow tools by traceability, not by AI scores

No particular commercial product is established as superior for this task. If you evaluate software, prioritize practical workflow features:

  • Reliable transcript import and export, with speaker labels and time stamps.
  • Claim-level annotation that keeps the surrounding context visible.
  • Fields for source title, publisher, date, evidence passage, assessment, and editor notes.
  • A durable link between each claim and the exact script or audio location.
  • Version history, permissions, and an exportable audit trail for corrections.
  • Search and filtering by status, risk, episode, or source date.

These features support transcription, annotation, contextual review, and verification. They do not remove the need for editorial judgment or establish a product ranking.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • “The prose sounds authoritative.” Fluency is not evidence. Return to the claim ledger and require a source.
  • “A detector says it is probably human.” Authorship classification does not validate facts. Check the assertion itself.
  • “One article repeats the statistic.” Trace it to the primary data and verify definitions, date, and denominator.
  • “The source is real, so the sentence is safe.” A real source may not support the exact wording. Quote or paraphrase only what it establishes.
  • “The caveat is in the show notes.” If the spoken sentence implies certainty, put the qualification in the audio.
  • “The claim cannot be disproved.” Lack of disproof is not support. Mark it not verified or remove it.
  • “The script changed after fact-checking.” Recheck the new wording; a small edit can change scope, causality, or numerical meaning.

Pre-publication sign-off checklist

  • Every factual assertion has a claim ID and an evidence record.
  • Context, date, geography, population, units, and attribution are preserved.
  • Names, titles, places, statistics, quotations, and translations were checked separately.
  • Breaking-news and controversial claims meet the stated corroboration threshold or are clearly qualified.
  • Unsupported claims are removed rather than softened into misleading certainty.
  • The final audio matches the checked script, including numbers and caveats.
  • Detector or provenance results have not been treated as proof of truth.
  • The ledger identifies the checker, date, source versions, and any follow-up correction needed.
