The quickest way to save one frame depends on your computer and how many images you need: on a Mac, use Photos’ File > Export > Export Frame to Pictures; on Windows, macOS, or Linux, VLC provides a menu-driven Video > Take Snapshot command; for a sequence of frames or repeatable jobs, use FFmpeg from the command line.
These methods save a frame that exists in the video file. They do not recreate an original camera still, and the documented tools use different output formats: TIFF in Photos, PNG by default in VLC, and JPEG in the FFmpeg example.

| What you need | Best documented route | Interface | Documented output | Platform evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One selected frame on a Mac | Apple Photos | Graphical menus | TIFF named “Frame [date]” in Pictures | Mac |
| One current frame with a desktop media player | VLC Desktop | Graphical menus | PNG by default | Windows, macOS, and Linux documentation |
| Several frames, a time interval, or a repeatable command | FFmpeg | Command line | JPEG sequence in the cited example | General FFmpeg documentation; no operating-system installation procedure is established here |
Photos and VLC are practical when you want to position a playhead by eye and save one image. FFmpeg is the more appropriate documented pattern when you want numbered files, one frame at a regular interval, a limited number of frames, or a start time you can specify.

A quick decision rule
Start with Photos if the video is already in your Mac photo library and you need one frame. Choose VLC if you want a familiar player and a menu command on a desktop system. Choose FFmpeg when repeating the same extraction, processing a long recording, or creating a numbered set matters more than avoiding the command line. You do not need to buy a capture card: the documented workflows operate on a video file that is already stored on the computer.

Before you extract a frame
Locate the video file or library item and decide whether you need one image or a sequence. If you need one image, note the approximate moment first so you do not search through the entire recording unnecessarily. If you need a sequence, decide how often a frame should be written, whether the run should begin at a particular time, and whether it should stop after a duration or a number of frames. FFmpeg’s documented options address those limits; Photos and VLC are primarily visual, single-frame workflows.
Also decide where the result should go. Photos has a documented Pictures destination and filename pattern. VLC’s documented default folder is specific to Windows, while other platforms may use the configured snapshot directory. FFmpeg writes wherever the output pattern points, so include a directory in that pattern if you want the files separated from the original video.
What a video snapshot actually is
A video is made of individual frames. A still-image command selects one of those frames and writes it as an image file. The result reflects the video’s own frame, dimensions, compression, color information, and motion blur. The cited procedures do not establish that the exported image is identical to a separate still photograph that a camera may have captured at the same moment.

Apple’s documented Photos export creates a TIFF. VLC’s documentation describes PNG as the default snapshot format. FFmpeg’s illustrated command writes sequentially numbered JPEG files and can resize them when a width-and-height value is supplied. None of the cited material provides a quality benchmark comparing those formats, so choose based on what your next application accepts rather than assuming one method is universally better.
A frame can also be a poor choice even when the command works correctly. Fast movement may leave motion blur in the source frame, and a nearby frame may show a different expression or action. If the player’s current image is not right, move a little earlier or later and capture again. The tools select an existing video frame; they do not fill in detail that was never recorded.
Method 1: Export one frame with Photos on a Mac
Apple Support documents a direct way to export a selected video frame without creating a video-editing project. The resulting file is a TIFF in the Pictures folder.
Steps
- Open Photos and open the video containing the image you want.
- Drag the video’s playhead until the desired frame is displayed.
- Choose File > Export > Export Frame to Pictures.
- Open the Pictures folder in Finder and look for a TIFF named Frame [date]. Apple’s guide states that “A TIFF file named ‘Frame [date]’ appears in the Pictures folder.”
When Photos is the sensible choice
- You are working on a Mac and need a single selected frame.
- You want a menu command rather than a terminal.
- You want the location and filename pattern documented by Apple.
- The video is already available in Photos, so opening another application would add unnecessary steps.
Checking the exported file
After exporting, open the Pictures folder and confirm that the new file has the expected Frame [date] name and TIFF format. If several frames are needed, repeat the playhead selection and export for each one; Apple’s documented command describes exporting the selected frame, not a batch sequence. Keep the files in a clearly named folder if you are making several selections so that later edits do not get mixed with unrelated pictures.

Return to the video in Photos, move the playhead again, and repeat the export. The command exports the frame currently selected in the open video; it does not describe a batch-extraction workflow. If the desired moment is between two displayed positions, choose the closer visible frame rather than expecting Photos to create an intermediate image.
Method 2: Save a snapshot in VLC Desktop
VLC Desktop’s documentation covers Windows, macOS, and Linux and describes VLC as free and open source. Its snapshot procedure is a simple graphical route for saving the frame currently shown by the player. The documentation names My Pictures as the default location on Windows and PNG as the default format. It does not establish that macOS and Linux use that same folder.

Steps
- Open VLC.
- Choose Media > Open File and select the video.
- Move through the video until the frame you want is visible.
- Choose Video > Take Snapshot.
- On Windows, check My Pictures for the PNG unless you have changed VLC’s snapshot directory. On macOS or Linux, check the configured snapshot directory rather than assuming the Windows location.
Getting a precise moment in the player
Use the playback controls to approach the moment, pause when the desired image is visible, and then invoke the snapshot command. If the result is one frame too early or too late, move a small amount and take another snapshot. The command captures what VLC is displaying at that point; it does not document a separate process for reconstructing a frame between two video frames.
Finding a snapshot when the folder is unexpected
VLC allows the output location to differ by platform or installation. If no image appears in the expected folder, inspect VLC’s configured snapshot directory and search for a recently created PNG. The platform documentation supports the menu command and Windows default described above, but it does not provide one universal folder for every operating system. Avoid assuming that a Windows instruction for My Pictures applies unchanged to macOS or Linux.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When VLC is preferable to Photos
- The video is not managed in Photos.
- You use Windows, macOS, or Linux and want the same general menu workflow.
- You want a quick snapshot from a media player rather than a command-line process.
- You want to repeat the capture while viewing different moments in the same player.
The documented VLC workflow does not require separate capture hardware. A capture card records incoming video; it is not needed to extract a frame from a video file already stored on your computer.
Method 3: Extract frames with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s official documentation shows a command-line example that writes one frame per second to sequentially numbered JPEG files:
ffmpeg -i foo.avi -r 1 -s WxH -f image2 foo-%03d.jpeg
In this example, replace foo.avi with your input filename and replace the output pattern as needed. The files are numbered in sequence, such as foo-001.jpeg. The -r 1 part requests one output frame per second. The -s WxH part supplies an output size; the documentation says the images are rescaled to fit that width and height. The -f image2 option selects the image-sequence output format.
Read the example from left to right
ffmpeginvokes the program.-i foo.aviidentifies the input video; substitute your own filename, including its path when it is not in the current directory.-r 1sets the one-frame-per-second interval shown in the manual’s example.-s WxHsupplies the requested width and height.WandHare placeholders, not literal dimensions to copy unchanged.-f image2selects image-sequence output.foo-%03d.jpegcreates numbered JPEG names with a three-digit counter.
This is a documented pattern, not an operating-system-specific installation guide or a tested command for every video. Substitute the input and output names deliberately, and keep the placeholder dimensions only if you actually want the manual’s resizing behavior.
Limit the amount of extraction
The FFmpeg manual says extraction can be limited with -frames:v or -t. Use a frame limit when you need a defined number of output images, or a duration limit when you want extraction to stop after a specified amount of time. The manual also documents -ss for starting at a selected point in the input.
Those controls make FFmpeg useful for repeatable jobs: you can select a starting time, request a regular interval, and stop after a known number of frames or a known duration. For example, plan the operation in three parts: choose the input with -i, use -ss if extraction should begin later than the start, then apply either a frame or duration limit. The cited documentation gives the controls and example syntax; it does not provide an operating-system-specific installation guide or claim that the example was tested on a particular video.

Understanding the output pattern
foo-%03d.jpegcreates a three-digit sequence, beginning with names such asfoo-001.jpeg.- Changing the extension changes the requested image format, but the cited example specifically demonstrates JPEG output.
- Changing
-s WxHchanges the requested output dimensions and causes rescaling according to the manual’s description. - Removing the interval, frame limit, or duration controls changes how much of the video is processed; use the documented options deliberately rather than treating the example as a universal single-frame command.
- Use an output pattern that makes the sequence easy to identify, especially when more than one video is being processed.
Planning a repeatable extraction
Before running FFmpeg, write down the source filename, starting point, interval, stopping rule, output dimensions, and filename pattern. This prevents accidental full-video extraction when you intended a short sample. A frame limit answers “how many images,” while a duration limit answers “how long should the run continue”; choose the one that matches the job. If you later repeat the task, the same explicit values make the operation easier to reproduce.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExtracting exactly one useful moment
For a single image, a GUI player is usually easier because you can move the playhead visually and invoke a snapshot command. Photos documents one selected-frame export on Mac, while VLC documents a current-frame snapshot across its desktop platforms.
FFmpeg becomes useful when the moment is known by time or when you need the same operation again. The documented -ss option lets you begin at a chosen point, and -frames:v can limit the result. Because the manual’s displayed command is an image-sequence example, treat any customized one-frame command as a command you have adapted from those documented controls, not as a tested recipe for every codec or operating system.
If exact visual selection matters more than a repeatable timestamp, use Photos or VLC to inspect nearby frames and capture the one that looks right. If repeatability matters more, record the chosen start point and limits in the FFmpeg command so the same settings can be reused. In either case, verify the saved file before deleting or moving the source video.
Extracting a sequence for contact sheets or review
Use the FFmpeg image-sequence pattern when you need multiple stills. One frame per second is the interval shown in the official example, and the resulting files are numbered so they can be sorted and processed as a group. Add a duration or frame limit when the entire video is not required.
A sequence can help you review a long recording, select representative moments, or create material for a later image workflow. The command-line approach also makes the input name, interval, dimensions, and filename pattern explicit, which is useful when the same settings must be repeated. Numbered names preserve the extraction order, so you can identify where a candidate image came from by its place in the sequence.
Do not assume that one frame per second is appropriate for every video. It is the interval in FFmpeg’s illustrative command, not a universal recommendation. Choose a different documented interval or limit when the scene changes faster or slower, and use -t or -frames:v to keep the output bounded.
Output formats and what the documentation establishes
| Tool | Format documented here | Filename or location detail | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos | TIFF | “Frame [date]” in Pictures | No comparative quality measurement |
| VLC | PNG by default | My Pictures is documented for Windows | No universal macOS/Linux default folder |
| FFmpeg example | JPEG | Sequential names such as foo-001.jpeg | No benchmark against TIFF or PNG; no OS-specific installation steps |
Use the format that suits the next step in your workflow. If an application requires a particular format, convert the exported image afterward with a tool you already trust. The cited sources do not measure quality, file size, color fidelity, or codec-specific results, so this guide does not rank TIFF, PNG, or JPEG as inherently best.
Keep the documented defaults in mind when handing files to someone else. A TIFF from Photos, a PNG from VLC, and a JPEG sequence from FFmpeg may have different compatibility requirements in the next application, even though each represents a frame from the source video. Confirm the extension and open one output file before processing an entire sequence.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Capturing the wrong frame: pause and move slightly earlier or later, then invoke the command again.
- Assuming every VLC installation uses My Pictures: that folder is documented as the Windows default; check the configured directory on other systems.
- Leaving FFmpeg placeholders unchanged: replace
foo.avi,WxH, and the output pattern with values that match your files and desired dimensions. - Creating an unbounded sequence: use
-frames:vor-twhen you only need part of the video. - Expecting a camera-original still: the output is a selected video frame, with the video’s own compression and motion characteristics.
- Assuming a format is automatically superior: the cited procedures establish formats, not a quality ranking or benchmark.
- Buying unnecessary hardware: a capture card is for recording incoming video and is not required for a stored file.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The saved image is in the wrong folder
For Photos, check the Pictures folder for the documented TIFF filename pattern. For VLC, remember that My Pictures is the documented default specifically for Windows; on macOS and Linux, inspect the configured snapshot directory. FFmpeg writes files according to the output path and filename pattern in your command, so look in the directory represented by that pattern.
The snapshot is not the desired moment
Move the playhead slightly earlier or later and invoke the export or snapshot command again. A video contains discrete frames, so the displayed image may change as you move between them. The procedures select the frame shown by the player or the frame reached by the command’s timing controls; they do not recover a separate original still.
FFmpeg creates more files than expected
Review the interval and limits in the command. The documented example is designed to produce a sequence at one frame per second. Use -frames:v to cap the number of frames, -t to cap the duration, and -ss to begin at a chosen point, as described in the FFmpeg manual.
The FFmpeg images have unexpected dimensions
Check whether you supplied -s WxH. The manual states that this option rescales images to fit the specified dimensions. If you do not want the example’s resizing behavior, adapt the command rather than copying the placeholder dimensions unchanged.
You expected a different file type
Confirm which route you used: Photos documents TIFF, VLC documents PNG by default, and the FFmpeg example uses JPEG. The file extension and the application’s documented defaults differ because these are separate workflows.
You cannot find the input for FFmpeg
Check the filename and path supplied after -i, and make sure the output pattern points to the folder where you expect the images. The manual’s foo.avi and foo-%03d.jpeg names are examples; they do not identify files on your computer.
A practical decision checklist
- Mac and one frame: open the video in Photos and use File > Export > Export Frame to Pictures.
- Windows, macOS, or Linux and a menu workflow: open the file in VLC and use Video > Take Snapshot.
- Many frames or repeatable extraction: adapt the FFmpeg image-sequence command.
- Need a known starting point: use FFmpeg’s documented
-sscontrol. - Need a bounded result: use
-frames:vor-t. - Need a particular size: account for the FFmpeg manual’s documented rescaling behavior when using
-s WxH. - Need to locate the result: check Photos’ Pictures location, VLC’s platform-appropriate snapshot directory, or the path encoded in the FFmpeg output pattern.
- Need to preserve the original video: write outputs to a separate folder and verify a sample image before organizing the full set.
Frequently asked questions
Can I extract a still without video-editing software?
Yes. Photos and VLC provide menu-driven export or snapshot commands, and FFmpeg provides a command-line extraction workflow. None of these documented routes requires a separate capture card for a video file already on the computer.
Does VLC always save snapshots in My Pictures?
No universal rule is established by the cited documentation. My Pictures is the documented default for Windows. On macOS and Linux, check VLC’s configured snapshot directory.
Can FFmpeg save only a short section of frames?
Yes. The FFmpeg manual documents -frames:v for limiting the number of video frames, -t for limiting duration, and -ss for starting at a selected point.
Best Value
Which method gives the highest-quality still?
The cited sources do not provide a comparative quality test. They document different formats and workflows, so no universal quality winner can be established from these procedures alone.
What should I use for one frame on Windows?
VLC is the documented graphical option that covers Windows. Open the video, position it on the desired frame, choose Video > Take Snapshot, and check My Pictures unless the snapshot directory was changed.
What should I use when I need dozens of images?
Use FFmpeg’s documented image-sequence pattern. Set the interval deliberately, then apply -frames:v or -t so the extraction stops where you intend. The example writes numbered JPEG files that can be reviewed as a group.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way to save one frame on a Mac?
Open the video in Photos, move to the desired frame, and choose File > Export > Export Frame to Pictures. Apple documents a TIFF named “Frame [date]” in the Pictures folder.
Where does VLC save a snapshot?
VideoLAN documents My Pictures as the default location on Windows. On macOS and Linux, check VLC’s configured snapshot directory rather than assuming the Windows folder.
