Replace 00:00:05 with the time you want, input.mp4 with your video’s filename, and thumbnail.jpg with the output filename. If you do not know which moment to use, export candidate frames at intervals and choose one after reviewing them.
Extract one frame at a specific time
FFmpeg is a command-line tool that can save a video frame as an image. In a terminal opened in the folder containing your video, run:
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 thumbnail.jpg
This asks FFmpeg to seek to five seconds, read input.mp4, and write one video frame to thumbnail.jpg. The current option for limiting output to one frame is -frames:v 1; FFmpeg’s option reference describes -vframes as an obsolete alias, so use the current form in new commands.
Replace the timestamp, source filename, and output filename as needed. For example, to save a frame from a file named conference.mp4 at 1 minute and 12 seconds:
#1 Best Overall
ffmpeg -ss 00:01:12 -i conference.mp4 -frames:v 1 conference-thumbnail.jpg
FFmpeg’s output includes progress and any warnings or errors. When the command finishes, look for the image at the output path you supplied. Open it and check that it shows the intended moment before using it.
Install and run FFmpeg
You need FFmpeg available on your system’s command line. If entering ffmpeg produces a message that the command cannot be found, install FFmpeg for your operating system or correct your PATH so the terminal can locate it. Installation steps differ by operating system; the commands here assume FFmpeg is already installed and accessible.
Run the command from the video’s folder, or supply full or relative paths. For example, if the file is in a Videos directory, point -i to that file and choose an output path in a folder that already exists. FFmpeg will not create a missing destination directory for you.
Choose the right timestamp
A timestamp gives you control over the frame to save, which is useful when you already know the scene you want. The seek option -ss appears before -i in the command above; this is a practical placement for faster seeking in long files. Seeking can land near a keyframe, however, so the resulting still may not be exactly the frame you had in mind. Inspect it and adjust the timestamp if necessary.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the timestamp format HH:MM:SS, with optional fractional seconds when you need to target a finer moment, such as 00:00:05.500. A requested time near the start or end of a file may yield a different usable frame than expected if the video does not contain a frame at precisely that position. Review the output rather than assuming the command has selected a particular scene correctly.
Find a thumbnail when you do not know the time
Export candidate frames at regular intervals
If you are unsure where the best moment occurs, create a set of images and choose one visually. This command writes a JPEG every five seconds:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf fps=1/5 frame%03d.jpg
The fps=1/5 filter requests one frame every five seconds. The %03d pattern becomes a three-digit sequence number, producing names such as frame001.jpg, frame002.jpg, and frame003.jpg. Create the output directory beforehand if you want the images saved inside a folder.
Intervals are a starting point, not a guarantee that a candidate lands on the most useful scene. If the frames miss the moment you want, use a shorter interval or return to timestamp-based extraction around the relevant scene. More frequent sampling produces more image files to inspect.
Let FFmpeg choose a representative candidate
FFmpeg’s thumbnail filter can select a frame from a batch:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf thumbnail -frames:v 1 thumbnail.jpg
The filter chooses the frame whose color and brightness histogram is closest to the batch average. Its default batch size is 100 frames, so it is a candidate-selection method based on a limited sample—not a detector of the most important scene or the best editorial thumbnail. Review the result. A larger batch can sample more frames, at additional processing cost.
Rank #3
Use automatic selection when a plausible representative still is more important than choosing a specific moment yourself. For a particular person, action, expression, or title-card moment, inspect candidates or specify the timestamp directly.
Choose image format and dimensions
JPEG or PNG
JPEG is lossy: it discards some image information to produce a smaller file, which is often suitable for web display. PNG is lossless and can preserve detail, but its files are generally larger. Choose the format according to how the image will be used and whether file size, detail, or transparency matters.

To request a high-quality JPEG with FFmpeg’s quality setting, add -q:v 2 before the output filename:
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 -q:v 2 thumbnail.jpg
For this setting, the cited FFmpeg Cookbook guide describes values from 2 to 31, with lower values meaning better quality. The setting is relevant to JPEG output; inspect the saved image and file size to decide whether it suits your use.
Resize while preserving aspect ratio
Use the scale filter to set a width while letting FFmpeg calculate the proportional height. This example makes the image 320 pixels wide:
Rank #4
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 -vf scale=320:-1 thumbnail.jpg
The -1 tells FFmpeg to calculate the other dimension in proportion to the source, avoiding a stretched image. Set the width to suit the destination. Upscaling can make the output dimensions larger, but it cannot restore detail that is not present in the source video.
Browser-based extraction and its limits
A browser-based frame extractor can be a convenient graphical option if you would rather choose a timestamp and save a still without working in a terminal. The reviewed browser tool describes processing locally in the browser. Its exact capabilities and limits are specific to that tool and may change, so check its own page before relying on a particular format or feature.
For long videos or large batches, a desktop workflow may be more suitable because browser memory can constrain processing. FFmpeg also gives you direct control over intervals, output format, resizing, and frame selection.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a video-frame extractor: use FFmpeg above to save a frame from a local video. If the image you need is instead a screenshot of a webpage that displays a video, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example URL with the webpage you want to capture and provide your API key. ScreenshotNeo can remove cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before a shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting
“Command not found” or “ffmpeg is not recognized”
The terminal cannot locate FFmpeg. Install it for your operating system, then reopen the terminal or update PATH so the executable is available. Confirm by running ffmpeg -version.
“No such file or directory”
Check the input filename, spelling, extension, and current working directory. If the video is elsewhere, provide its correct path. Also verify that the output folder exists before writing the thumbnail there.
The output is black, blank, or the wrong moment
Open the result to confirm what was actually saved. Adjust the timestamp, especially if the seek landed near a keyframe or the requested time is at the edge of the video. For an unknown scene, export frames at shorter intervals and choose a candidate manually.

For a smaller JPEG, consider a different quality setting; the cited guide describes -q:v values from 2 to 31, where lower means better quality. To change pixel dimensions, use the scale filter. Choose settings for the destination, and remember that enlarging the output does not add source detail.
There are too many candidate images
Increase the interval in the fps filter—for example, use a frame every ten seconds with fps=1/10. If candidates are too far apart to catch the scene, reduce the interval instead. Export into a dedicated folder so the sequence is easy to review and remove afterward.
Choosing a method
| Method | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Timestamp with -ss |
You know the moment you want. | Inspect and adjust if seeking lands near a keyframe or the frame is not the intended one. |
Interval frames with fps |
You need to browse possible moments. | Creates multiple files; closer intervals mean more candidates. |
thumbnail filter |
You want FFmpeg to provide a representative candidate. | Uses a sampled batch and may not select the scene you consider meaningful. |
| Browser frame extractor | You prefer a graphical interface for timestamp-based extraction. | Capabilities vary by tool; browser memory may constrain long videos or large batches. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I extract a thumbnail from an online video without downloading it first?
The commands in this guide operate on an input file path. They do not themselves download a video from a URL.
Will the thumbnail have the same resolution as the video?
Unless you resize it with a filter, the saved frame uses the source frame’s dimensions. A larger resized image does not contain additional source detail.
