The most effective way to extend a brushless power-tool battery is to manage heat, charge it with compatible equipment, keep vents clear, avoid damaging deep discharge, and store it under the battery maker’s specified conditions. Start work with a full charge when you need maximum runtime, but store a pack at the partial charge level specified for that platform. Those are different goals.
“Battery life” can mean two separate things: how long a pack runs on one charge, and how many years and charge cycles it remains useful. Material, load, technique, temperature, battery age and charge history affect runtime; storage, charging and physical care affect long-term service life.

First, separate runtime from service life
A battery that lasts eight hours over several jobs may still be near the end of its useful service life. Conversely, a healthy pack may provide short runtime when it is cold, powering a heavily loaded saw, or working in dense material. Diagnose the right problem before changing your habits or buying a replacement.
Runtime on one charge
Runtime is the time or amount of work available between charges. It changes with the tool, battery capacity, material, applied load, cutting or drilling technique, ambient temperature and the pack’s age. Published “maximum runtime” figures are often measured under no-load or controlled conditions. Bosch’s cordless-tool guidance notes that the longest runtime is typically achieved with no load, which does not represent ordinary work.

Useful service life over years
Service life is how long the lithium-ion pack retains enough capacity and delivers power safely. Heat, unsuitable storage, physical damage, incompatible chargers and repeated operation outside the maker’s limits can shorten that period. No single percentage, temperature limit or cycle count applies to every battery platform.
Use the exact battery and tool instructions first
Battery packs that fit the same tool family are not automatically interchangeable across brands or voltage platforms. The tool, pack and charger may communicate electronically, and their charging and temperature limits can differ. Read the instructions for the exact model before applying general advice.
- Use the manufacturer-approved battery and charger for the platform.
- Confirm that the pack’s voltage, connector and electronic communication match the tool.
- Follow the manual if it gives a different storage charge, operating temperature or charging procedure than the examples below.
- Do not use an unfamiliar adapter or a modified pack to force compatibility.
DEWALT recommends authentic batteries for its tools, while Makita warns that non-genuine packs can defeat communication between the battery, charger and tool. These are platform-specific safety instructions, but they illustrate why a generic “universal” charger is a poor choice.

A battery that is cracked, dented or swollen is a safety problem, not a maintenance opportunity. Remove it from service and follow the manufacturer’s disposal or service process. Do not tape over damage, open the case or attempt to straighten a dented housing.
Check the housing and terminals
- Look for cracks, deformation, swelling, leakage, scorching or melted plastic.
- Check that contacts are clean and not bent, loose or contaminated.
- Keep loose batteries away from keys, coins, screws and other conductive objects that could bridge the terminals.
- Keep packs away from children and from unprotected metal storage bins.
Check the tool’s airflow
Clear dust and debris from the tool’s vents before use. STIHL warns that blocked vents can allow a battery to overheat during operation or charging. Use the cleaning method specified for the tool; do not force debris deeper into the housing or spray liquid into the vents.

Charge for the job, store for the future
Use a full charge when you are about to work and need the available capacity. For long-term storage, use the partial charge level specified by the battery maker. The two instructions are not contradictory: one maximizes immediate runtime, while the other reduces the stress associated with leaving a lithium-ion pack full for an extended period.
Storage charge is platform-specific
STIHL’s 2024 support guidance recommends storing its batteries at 40–60% charge. STIHL USA gives different context for its products: 40–80% for removable batteries and 40–60% for tools with integrated batteries. These figures should not be transferred to another brand or product family.

Choose a suitable storage place
Store the pack dry, out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, hot vehicles and freezing exposure. STIHL gives a general storage range of -10°C to +50°C for its batteries while advising users to consult the product instructions and favor more moderate conditions. That range is STIHL-specific, not a universal safe range for every lithium-ion tool battery.
Bosch’s cordless-tool runtime guidance identifies 15–25°C as its optimal battery-performance range. “Optimal performance” is not the same as a universal storage or charging limit, so use it as Bosch’s operating guidance rather than a rule for all packs.
Control temperature during use and charging
Heat is generated by both the battery and the tool while current flows. High load, blocked vents, direct sun and hot surroundings can raise temperatures further. Cold conditions can temporarily reduce available power and runtime. The battery manual takes precedence over any general temperature advice.

Let a hot pack cool when instructed
If the tool or charger indicates that a battery is too hot, remove it from the heat source and allow it to cool naturally in a dry, ventilated place. Makita’s care instruction is: “Allow a hot battery to cool before charging.” Do not put a hot pack in water, a refrigerator or a freezer to accelerate cooling.

STIHL Canada says its batteries can be charged between +5°C and +40°C. That is a STIHL-specific charging range. A different platform may use different limits or prevent charging electronically outside them. If charging is refused, do not bypass the protection; bring the pack into the temperature range stated by its manufacturer.
Improve runtime by reducing unnecessary load
Battery capacity is only part of the runtime equation. The same amp-hour rating can produce very different results in a drill, grinder, mower or saw because the load and duty cycle differ.
Match the battery to the task
Use the battery size recommended for the tool and job. A higher-capacity pack can provide more energy, but it may add mass, alter balance and be incompatible with a particular tool. A compact pack may be preferable for overhead drilling or repeated ladder work, while a larger approved pack can make sense for sustained cutting. The maker’s compatibility chart is the deciding reference.
Use the correct accessory and setting
- Use a sharp, suitable blade, bit, wheel or abrasive. A dull or mismatched accessory makes the motor work harder.
- Select the speed, torque or power mode appropriate for the material instead of using maximum power for every operation.
- Allow the accessory to cut or drill at its intended rate. Forcing it increases current draw and heat.
- Keep the workpiece supported and aligned so the tool is not fighting side loads or binding.
Plan the duty cycle
Short pauses can let the motor and battery shed heat, especially during demanding work. Stop if the tool’s protection system reduces power, flashes a temperature warning or shuts down. Continuing to pull the trigger against a thermal or overload limit does not recover runtime; it adds stress.

Account for the environment
Cold weather can make a charged pack appear weak until it warms into the manufacturer’s operating range. In hot weather, keep the pack shaded and avoid leaving it on a sun-heated surface. Water and condensation are also hazards: store and charge the battery dry, and follow the tool’s instructions for wet work.
Charging practices that protect the pack
Use the compatible charger
A charger is designed for a particular battery chemistry, voltage range, connector and communication system. Use the charger approved for your platform. Do not assume that a “fast” charger improves long-term battery life; the available guidance does not establish that faster charging extends lifespan.
Do not deliberately run the pack flat
Modern tool packs include low-voltage protection, but the exact behavior differs. Makita advises users not to allow its batteries to go completely dead. Do not discharge a pack on purpose to avoid a supposed memory effect, and do not continue using a tool after it repeatedly cuts out. Recharge according to the battery maker’s directions.
Decide what to do after charging
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one universal rule about leaving every cordless-tool battery on its charger. STIHL says its battery-management system protects against overcharging for its products, but that statement does not set instructions for other platforms. Follow the charger manual, and unplug or remove the pack if the maker tells you to do so.
What brushless motors change—and what they do not
Brushless motors eliminate replaceable carbon brushes and can be efficient in the way they convert electrical energy to mechanical work. STIHL describes its EC motor as energy-efficient and nearly wear-free. That description concerns the motor, not a guarantee that the battery will retain capacity indefinitely.

Brushless construction does not prevent lithium-ion aging, remove the effects of heat, or guarantee a fixed runtime. Two brushless tools with similar specifications can use different control electronics, gearing and duty cycles. The battery’s temperature, load, age and charging history still determine how long it runs.
Understand self-discharge and capacity loss
STIHL presents a figure of 1–3% capacity loss per year from self-discharge for its battery products. The year of the cited charging guidance is not stated, and the figure is not an independently verified annual degradation rate for every battery brand. Treat it as STIHL’s statement about its products, not as a prediction for your pack.
A pack that loses runtime quickly may have a damaged or aging cell, a tool that is drawing excessive current, a blocked cooling path or a charging problem. A single short session is not enough to calculate a reliable capacity-loss rate.

A practical care routine
After each work session
- Turn off the tool and remove the battery if the platform’s instructions call for removal.
- Inspect the pack for cracks, dents, swelling, heat damage or contamination.
- Brush debris away from the battery contacts and tool vents using the approved cleaning method.
- If the pack is hot, let it cool before charging when the manufacturer directs.
- Recharge with the compatible charger if you need the tool ready for the next job.
Before storing for several weeks or longer
- Identify the exact battery model and read its storage section.
- Set the charge to the stated storage level; for applicable STIHL batteries, the cited guidance is 40–60%, while other STIHL product contexts specify 40–80% for removable batteries.
- Clean and inspect the pack, then protect the terminals from conductive objects.
- Place it in a dry, shaded location within the temperature range stated for that product.
- Keep it away from children, flammable clutter, direct sunlight and temperature extremes.
- Check it periodically according to the manual rather than leaving a stored pack indefinitely without inspection.
Before returning to work
- Inspect the housing and terminals again.
- Bring the battery to the manufacturer’s recommended operating temperature.
- Charge it fully if maximum runtime is required for the task.
- Install it only in a compatible tool, verify that the latch is secure and begin with a light test.
Diagnose declining runtime before replacing a battery

Do not compare a replacement pack by voltage alone. The correct replacement depends on the exact tool platform, model, connector, capacity range, electronics and charger. A genuine, manufacturer-approved pack is the appropriate starting point when the existing one is damaged or no longer provides useful runtime.
Storage accessories: useful organization, not extra capacity
A purpose-built battery storage case can keep packs dry, separated and protected from conductive objects, but the case itself does not restore capacity or extend a battery’s chemistry. Check that the case fits the exact pack and leaves no terminals exposed to metal items. Do not seal a warm battery in an airtight container; allow it to reach the manufacturer’s storage condition first.
Quick decision checklist
- Need maximum runtime today? Charge the approved pack fully, use the correct accessory and avoid unnecessary load.
- Putting it away for weeks? Use the platform’s specified partial charge and storage environment.
- Battery hot? Stop and let it cool as directed before charging.
- Battery damaged? Do not use or repair it yourself; follow the manufacturer’s service or disposal process.
- Runtime suddenly poor? Check temperature, vents, accessory condition, tool load and charger compatibility before assuming normal aging.
- Considering a larger pack? Verify tool compatibility, balance and the manufacturer’s recommendation for the task.
The durable habit is simple: use the right pack and charger, keep the system cool and clean, avoid deliberate deep discharge, and store the battery exactly as its maker specifies. Brushless technology can make the tool efficient, but careful battery handling remains what preserves usable runtime and service life.
