To make earbuds last longer between charges, lower playback volume to a comfortable level, switch off noise control or other features you do not need, and use the case to recharge them between sessions. If your earbuds run out sooner than advertised, compare your use with the maker’s test conditions and check that the case and charging contacts are working before assuming the battery is faulty.
What changes earbud battery life?
Battery-life figures describe particular listening conditions, not a guaranteed runtime for every owner. Volume, audio codec, noise-control settings, calls versus music, the connected device, wireless interference, and listening habits can all affect how long a charge lasts. Google cautions that “Use of other features will reduce battery life” on its Pixel Buds charging and battery support page.

Case-assisted total time is different from continuous playback on one earbud charge. The total counts listening across sessions, with the earbuds recharging in the case between uses. Google and Xiaomi publish separate earbud-only and case-inclusive figures for their products.

How to extend time between charges
- Use a comfortable, moderate volume. Some published measurements use 50% volume, but your runtime will depend on your own listening conditions. Do not use an unsafe listening level to save battery.
- Turn off features you do not need. If your model offers them, disable ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, or head tracking when you can do without them. The improvement depends on the model and settings; there is no reliable universal percentage.
- Try another codec only when your model supports it. Soundcore says Space A40 uses more power with LDAC. That finding is specific to this model; check your own manufacturer’s documentation before assuming another codec will save power.
- Account for calls. Soundcore says Space A40 call runtime is shorter than music-playback runtime, so frequent calls can explain a difference from a music-based claim.
- Return the earbuds to a powered case after use. Confirm each bud is seated well enough to connect with the charging contacts. Xiaomi recommends returning its buds to the case after use; Soundcore also advises checking the case charge and contact.
- Use the recommended charging equipment. Follow the guidance for your model. For Momentum True Wireless 2, Sennheiser recommends the supplied USB cable and a compatible standard power supply.
Soundcore’s Space A40 guidance recommends regular use and charging before the level falls below 20%. Treat that as advice for this product, not a proven threshold that applies to every earbud.

How to compare advertised battery-life figures
Before comparing runtimes, note whether the figure is for one earbud charge or includes the case, which listening mode and activity it covers, and what volume, codec, and other settings the maker used. Also note whether the figure is described as “up to,” whether it comes from laboratory testing, and any caveat that actual use varies. The examples below show why the conditions matter; they are not a like-for-like ranking.

There is no standardized independent test or universal adjustment factor established here for converting a manufacturer’s figure into “real-world” runtime. Compare figures only when their test conditions are sufficiently similar. Useful comparison points are runtime per earbud charge, total time with the case, ANC-on runtime, music versus talk time, stated volume and codec, and how completely the maker describes its test.

What to check when earbuds drain quickly or do not charge
- Check the case charge and seating. Charge the case if needed, then reseat each earbud and confirm it makes contact. The buds may still work even when the case needs charging.
- Inspect the charging contacts. Debris or an obstruction can prevent charging. Soundcore recommends cleaning contact points with a dry cloth or cotton swab and checking that ear tips do not block the connectors. Follow your own model’s cleaning instructions.
- Test the mode you actually use. Compare runtime with the intended settings enabled. Soundcore specifically recommends Normal mode when testing its Normal-mode runtime; a test with ANC on will not match a figure for ANC off.
- Check each battery level in a supported app or phone interface. Google documents Pixel Buds battery checks in the Android app, widget, or notification flow. Xiaomi describes checks through its app and phone interfaces.
- Investigate a left-right difference in context. Single-ear use or charging only one bud can result in different battery levels; Xiaomi notes both patterns. If the issue remains after the model’s charging and troubleshooting checks, contact the manufacturer or service provider. The sources do not establish a universal failure threshold or guarantee that a user can replace the battery.
