Choose the least disruptive change first
Not every battery setting has the same cost. Display changes usually save power without changing what your apps can do; blanket restrictions can stop syncing, delay notifications or make features unavailable. Use this order when you want longer runtime without making the phone feel broken.

1. Find the real drain before restricting anything
A phone that loses charge quickly may have a bright display, a poor-signal radio, a navigation session, a hot processor or one misbehaving app. Restricting every app hides the symptom and can remove useful background functions. Start with the built-in usage report.
Open Battery usage
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery. On many phones, choose Battery usage; the exact label and location vary.
- Review the chart and the list of apps or system components. Compare the percentages with what you actually did during the period shown.
- Open an app that is unusually high for your normal use and inspect its foreground and background activity.
A high percentage is not automatically a fault. A video app, camera, game, navigation app or hotspot can legitimately rank near the top after intensive use. Look for an app with substantial background activity when you did not open it, or a sudden change from your normal pattern.
Change only the app that needs attention
If the app’s background use is disproportionate, open its battery setting and choose the phone’s standard Optimised or equivalent mode unless you have a specific reason to allow unrestricted activity. A targeted change preserves normal behaviour for the rest of your apps. Broadly placing every app in a restricted state can stop timely messages, uploads, widgets or other background work.

After changing one app, use the phone normally for a day and check Battery usage again. This gives you a before-and-after comparison without guessing which restriction caused a missing notification.
2. Reduce display drain without making the screen uncomfortable
The display is often the most predictable source of avoidable consumption because it draws power for every minute it remains lit. Google lists screen timeout and brightness among the general Android controls that can extend runtime.
Shorten the screen timeout
- Open Settings.
- Go to Display or Display & touch.
- Tap Screen timeout, Screen sleep or a similarly named option.
- Select the shortest interval that still suits how you read. Thirty seconds or one minute is a practical starting point; choose longer only if a shorter interval interrupts your work.
The objective is to stop an idle screen from consuming power, not to force a setting that makes you repeatedly wake the phone.
Use moderate brightness or Adaptive brightness
In Settings > Display, lower the brightness until text remains comfortable in the conditions where you use the phone. Enable Adaptive brightness if it responds well to your surroundings. It can reduce unnecessary brightness while raising it when the environment is brighter. If its adjustments are distracting, turn it off and set a level manually rather than tolerating a screen that is consistently brighter than necessary.

Optional display experiments
On supported OLED-equipped phones, a dark interface can use less power in apps that genuinely support a dark theme. Pixel guidance says apps that do not support Dark theme cannot provide this benefit. Enable Dark theme only if you prefer the appearance or want to test it on your particular device; do not expect the same result on every display technology.
Some Pixel models also expose Always-on Display and Smooth Display controls. Turning Always-on Display off removes the idle clock and notification view. Disabling Smooth Display can reduce refresh-rate activity. These are model- and software-dependent options, not universal Android instructions, so use the manufacturer’s support page for the exact path.
3. Keep Adaptive Battery and normal app optimisation enabled
Adaptive Battery learns how you use apps and helps the system reduce work from apps you rarely open. On phones that offer it, leave it enabled alongside each app’s normal Optimised battery mode.
What the optimisation changes
Adaptive management can postpone some background work. Google explicitly warns that it may reduce performance or delay notifications. That trade-off is intentional: the system spends less energy maintaining apps that you seldom use. If a particular app must deliver immediate alerts or maintain a persistent task, check that app’s battery setting rather than disabling optimisation for the entire phone.
Allow time after setup or a reset
On a new or reset Pixel, Google says Adaptive Battery may take a few weeks to learn usage patterns fully. A short period of uneven behaviour after setup is not proof that the feature has failed. Keep the setting on while the phone observes which apps you use and when.
Do not repeatedly clear app data, force-stop every app or switch optimisation on and off while evaluating battery life. Those actions erase the usage pattern the system needs and can create extra setup and synchronisation work.
4. Keep the phone cool
Heat increases battery drain even when the phone is not being used and can damage the battery over time. Google’s wording is direct: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Avoid leaving the phone in direct sun, a hot car or under bedding while it is charging. Remove a thick case temporarily if the device is clearly overheating and the case is trapping heat.

Recognise high-drain activities
Extended navigation, video streaming, camera recording, graphics-heavy or highly interactive games, hotspot use, GPS and calls while moving can all raise consumption. These activities combine screen, processor, radio and location work. When immediate runtime matters, shorten the session, lower brightness, stop recording when finished and end navigation or hotspot sharing as soon as you no longer need them.
Heat and activity are different from a defective battery. A rapid drop during a long, bright, high-performance session can be expected; an unusual drop while the phone is cool and idle is a reason to return to Battery usage and look for background activity.
5. Treat connectivity and Location as conditional switches
Turning off radios can save energy in the right situation, but it also removes the service those radios provide. Do not use a blanket “turn everything off” routine if you rely on calls, messages, wearables, navigation or automatic uploads.
Wi‑Fi and mobile data
Wi‑Fi can be preferable to mobile data when a reliable network is available, but switching Wi‑Fi off may force the phone onto cellular data. Conversely, disabling mobile data can stop background sync and mobile notifications. Use airplane mode or disable a connection only when you are somewhere you do not need calls, messages or data, such as during a flight or in a known dead zone.
Bluetooth
Turn Bluetooth off when you are not using a watch, headset, car system or other accessory that depends on it. Leave it on when you need those devices; the battery saving is not worth losing an essential connection.

Location
Location supports navigation, emergency functions, geofencing, weather and many app features. Google notes that some apps and features will not work when Location is off. If only one app is requesting location excessively, review that app’s permission and battery behaviour instead of disabling Location for the whole phone. When you do switch Location off, do it for a situation where you knowingly accept that navigation or location-based functions may be unavailable.
6. Use Battery Saver as an emergency mode, not a permanent default
Battery Saver is designed for moments when preserving the remaining charge matters more than uninterrupted background work. Depending on the phone, it can limit or stop background activity, affect network behaviour, delay some apps or features and reduce visual effects.

Turn it on when the trade-off is acceptable
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Tap Battery Saver or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- Turn it on manually, or configure an automatic trigger if your phone offers one.
- When you need normal syncing and prompt notifications again, return to the same screen and turn it off.
Read the warning shown by your model before confirming. If you depend on a work messenger, time-sensitive email, a fitness tracker or a background upload, test that function while Battery Saver is active rather than assuming it will behave normally.
For a feature-preserving routine, prefer the display and targeted-app steps first. Battery Saver is useful precisely because it is more disruptive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Charging practices: separate battery health from today’s runtime
Settings that reduce active drain help the current charge last longer. Charging habits concern the battery’s long-term condition and are a separate question. Google’s general Android help includes operational advice to occasionally let the battery fall below 10% and then charge it fully; that is a charging recommendation, not a measured percentage improvement in daily runtime.
Use the charger and cable specified or supplied by the phone manufacturer, and seek the manufacturer’s guidance when you need replacement charging equipment. A charger replenishes energy; it does not make the phone consume less while you use it. A power bank provides reserve energy away from an outlet but likewise does not improve efficiency.
If the phone becomes hot while charging, move it to a cooler, uncovered place and avoid intensive gaming, navigation or recording until temperatures return to normal. Persistent heat, swelling or an unexpected shutdown warrants manufacturer service rather than another software toggle.
8. Account for Android version and manufacturer differences
Android is not one identical interface. Google’s general help says some steps apply only to Android 13 and later, and that battery life depends on the device. Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus and other manufacturers can rename menus, move controls or add their own power modes.
Use the concepts rather than relying on an exact label: look under Settings > Battery for usage, optimisation and Battery Saver; look under Settings > Display for timeout, brightness, refresh-rate and dark-theme controls. If a setting is missing, search the Settings app for “battery,” “timeout,” “adaptive brightness” or “location.” For model-specific paths, consult the phone maker’s current support documentation. Pixel instructions may include controls that do not exist on other Android phones.

When an Android update changes behaviour
After a major update, a reset or a new-phone setup, indexing, app updates and account synchronisation can temporarily increase activity. Check Battery usage before changing several settings at once. If one app remains unusually active after its update completes, update it again, restart the phone and review its battery mode. Escalate to the app developer or manufacturer if the usage remains abnormal while the phone is cool and idle.
9. Troubleshoot common situations
The phone loses charge overnight
- Check Battery usage for the overnight period and identify an app with unexpected background activity.
- Confirm that the screen timeout is not set unusually long and that Always-on Display is enabled only if you want it.
- Check whether the phone was hot, in weak cellular coverage or running a hotspot, navigation session or media upload.
- Change the single relevant app’s battery mode, then observe another night before making broader changes.
Notifications arrive late after a battery change
Adaptive Battery, Optimised app use and Battery Saver can all postpone background work. Check whether Battery Saver is active, then open the affected app’s battery settings and return it to the manufacturer’s normal Optimised mode if you had restricted it. If immediate delivery is essential, allow the app’s documented background operation while leaving unrelated apps optimised.
The screen is hard to read after lowering brightness
Raise brightness to a comfortable level or enable Adaptive brightness. Battery saving is not useful if you strain to read or repeatedly override the setting. A shorter timeout usually offers a larger convenience-to-saving ratio than forcing an unreadably dim display.
Battery drain continues while the phone is cool and idle
Return to Battery usage, expand the time range if your phone allows it and look for a recurring app or system component. Install pending app and system updates, restart once, and check again. If no software source explains the loss, document the percentage drop and contact the manufacturer; a worn or damaged battery may require service, and software restrictions cannot repair physical wear.
10. A low-friction routine you can keep
- Once a week, glance at Settings > Battery > Battery usage rather than changing every app pre-emptively.
- Keep screen timeout short enough for your habits and brightness comfortable, with Adaptive brightness enabled if it behaves well.
- Leave Adaptive Battery and normal app optimisation on, allowing time for the system to learn.
- End navigation, hotspot, recording, streaming or demanding games when you are finished, and keep the phone out of heat.
- Use Battery Saver only when its delays and restrictions are acceptable.
- Disable Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, mobile data or Location only when you do not need the service they provide.
This approach preserves the features you use while directing stronger restrictions only at a verified source of drain or a genuinely low-charge situation.
What the official guidance does—and does not—promise
Google’s help pages provide settings and usage practices, not a universal percentage saving for each switch. No single display setting, app restriction or connectivity change has a guaranteed improvement across all Android models. Your screen technology, signal strength, software version, app mix, battery age and temperature all affect the result.
For reference, consult Google Android Help: Get the most life from your Android device’s battery, Google Pixel Phone Help: Get the most life from your Pixel phone battery and Google Pixel Phone Help: Keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimisation on. These pages are current support documents, but their menu names and model restrictions can change as Android is updated.
