The safest way to improve OnePlus battery life is to diagnose the drain first, then make reversible changes in this order: inspect Battery usage, select a lower or automatic refresh rate, shorten the screen-off interval to a comfortable setting, and restrict background activity only for apps that do not need reliable background work. Use Battery Saver when you accept temporary feature and app limits. Keep charging optimization and battery-health settings in a separate category: they help manage long-term capacity, but they do not promise extra hours immediately.
OnePlus menu names differ by model and OxygenOS version. The paths below come from the OxygenOS 14.0, Android 12, OnePlus 9 and OnePlus Open manuals, so your phone may show fewer choices, different wording or a different location.

Start with Battery usage instead of changing settings at random
A battery that drains quickly can have very different causes: one unusually active app, a process running in the background, a display setting, or a battery whose maximum capacity has declined. OnePlus manuals provide a Battery usage or usage-details view so you can see what has consumed power since the last charge. That screen should be your first stop because it tells you which change is justified.

- Open Settings.
- Enter the battery section. Depending on the phone, it may be labeled Battery, Battery usage or Battery usage details.
- Choose the view that shows consumption since the last charge or over the available recent period.
- Look for an app or process that is unexpectedly high for the way you used the phone. A navigation app used for hours, for example, is not automatically abnormal; an app you barely opened appearing near the top deserves investigation.
- Open the individual app entry if the phone offers details such as foreground use, background activity or optimization controls. Record what you saw before changing a setting so you can tell whether the change helped.
Percentages in this screen describe that charge period, not a universal estimate of how many hours your phone should last. OnePlus documentation does not establish a guaranteed number of hours or a fixed percentage saved by any individual setting.

Check for a pattern before taking action
- One app dominates: review that app’s background and battery-management choices first.
- The display is prominent: try Standard or Auto select refresh rate and a shorter automatic screen-off time.
- Several apps are active in the background: apply app-level controls selectively rather than restricting everything.
- Usage remains abnormal across charges: check battery health and contact official OnePlus support for your exact model and region.
Make low-disruption display changes first
The screen can consume a large share of a charge, but the most useful adjustment depends on how much motion smoothness you value. The OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual says, “A standard refresh rate is more than capable of handling your everyday use with a better battery life performance.” It also states that “higher refresh rates drain the battery faster.” Those are qualitative trade-offs, not a promise of a particular saving on every phone.
Choose Standard or Auto select refresh rate
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & brightness.
- Tap Screen refresh rate.
- Select Standard for a fixed lower refresh rate, or Auto select when your model offers it and you want the phone to choose between available rates.
- If your phone lists app-specific refresh-rate choices, leave high refresh rates enabled only for apps where the smoother motion is important to you.
The OxygenOS 14 manual lists Auto select, Standard and High, but explicitly notes that the feature varies by model and software version. If you do not see this path, search Settings for “refresh rate” or consult the manual for your handset.
Balance smoothness and endurance

Do not treat a high refresh rate as a fault. It is a deliberate choice between display smoothness and battery use. If Standard feels uncomfortable, Auto select may preserve a more balanced experience where available.

Shorten automatic screen-off time without making the phone frustrating
The Android 12 system guide lists changing the automatic screen-off time as a power-saving optimization. Choose an interval that turns the display off when you put the phone down, but does not interrupt reading or work.

- Open Settings and use the Settings search for screen off, screen timeout or auto screen-off.
- Open the matching display or lock-screen setting.
- Select the shortest interval that remains comfortable for your normal reading and typing.
- Use the phone normally for at least one charge cycle, then revisit Battery usage to see whether display consumption changed.
Menu wording and available intervals vary. A shorter timeout saves power only when the display would otherwise remain on; it should not be so short that you repeatedly wake the phone and spend more time interacting with it.
Control background activity app by app
Background restrictions can reduce unnecessary work, but applying them globally can break the behavior you rely on. OnePlus manuals describe app-level battery optimization and management choices. Depending on the model, you may see options such as Optimize, Intelligent Control or Don’t optimize, along with background-activity controls.
Decide which apps must remain unrestricted
Keep less restrictive behavior for apps whose background operation is essential to you, such as an app you depend on for timely notifications or another task that must continue when its screen is closed. The exact effect of a restriction differs by app, so treat each change as a test rather than assuming every application behaves identically.

- Open Settings and go to Battery.
- Open Battery usage, App battery management or the similarly named app-management page.
- Select an app that appears unusually active and does not need uninterrupted background work.
- Choose the available optimized or intelligent-control option. On some OnePlus models, the choices are Optimize, Intelligent Control and Don’t optimize.
- Use the phone normally and verify that notifications, syncing or other functions you care about still work.
- If an essential function is delayed or stops, return to that app and choose the less restrictive setting offered by your model.
The OnePlus Open manual also describes background optimization and sleep standby optimization. Those labels are model-specific; do not assume that a setting shown on the Open exists on a OnePlus 9 or another handset.

What restrictions can change
- Notifications may arrive later when an app is prevented from working freely in the background.
- Automatic synchronization or uploads may wait until you open the app.
- Some apps may stop an ongoing background task sooner than expected.
- Reversing the setting is usually the quickest recovery when an essential function is affected.
Because OnePlus does not publish a universal runtime gain for these controls, judge them by the battery-usage screen and by whether the app still performs the job you need.
Use Battery Saver as a temporary, explicit trade-off
Battery Saver is not a free performance improvement. OnePlus’s Android 12 system guide states: “Battery saver will turn off some device features and restrict apps.” The OnePlus 9 manual likewise documents Battery Saver alongside battery-usage and optimization controls.
When Battery Saver makes sense
- You are away from a charger and need to stretch the remaining charge.
- You accept that some background work, updates or features may be limited.
- You want a short-term emergency measure rather than a permanent configuration.
Turn it on and set expectations
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Open Battery Saver or the similarly named power-saving control.
- Review the features and app restrictions shown on your phone before enabling it.
- Turn it off when you can charge or when a restricted function becomes important.
The Android 12 guide illustrates possible power-saving optimizations such as closing power-draining apps, changing the refresh rate to 60 Hz, turning off GPS or changing the automatic screen-off time. These are examples from that guide, not a universal checklist. Do not disable location merely because it appears in an example; if navigation, safety or another essential function needs it, leave it available.

Separate immediate runtime changes from battery-health care
Two different goals are often confused: lasting longer on today’s charge and preserving the amount of energy the battery can hold over time. Display and app controls address immediate consumption. Charging optimization and battery-health settings address charging behavior and long-term capacity.

Understand maximum capacity
The OnePlus Open manual explains that maximum capacity indicates how much charge the battery can hold compared with when it was new. It states, “A lower percentage means less usage time between charges.” A worn battery therefore cannot be restored to its original capacity by changing refresh rate or background settings; those changes can only reduce current consumption.
Use optimized charging when your model provides it
OnePlus manuals describe optimized or adaptive charging. The purpose is to manage charging behavior in a way intended to support battery health, not to guarantee extra runtime immediately after you enable it. Open Settings and search for optimized charging, adaptive charging or battery health; the exact location and controls depend on the model and OxygenOS version.
Choose the right response to low health
- Health is normal and drain is explainable: keep the settings that preserve your preferred notifications and display experience, then adjust only the largest consumers.
- Health is low but usage is ordinary: expect fewer hours between charges and investigate model-specific service options through official support.
- Health appears normal but drain is sudden and persistent: document the Battery usage entries, note when the change began and contact OnePlus support for device-specific diagnosis.
Service availability, battery replacement procedures and menu names can vary by country and model. Official OnePlus support is the appropriate source for the exact device and region.
A practical decision framework

The manuals provide qualitative comparisons rather than measured savings for a particular person’s usage. If a setting does not solve the problem, reverse it and test the next highest-impact item shown in Battery usage.
Model and OxygenOS differences to expect
Do not force a menu path from another OnePlus phone onto yours. The following examples come from different official manuals and illustrate why labels vary.

If a listed control is missing, use the Settings search and check the manual for your exact model. Avoid installing a third-party “battery booster” merely to reproduce a control that OnePlus already provides; an unfamiliar optimizer can create its own background activity and notification problems.
Troubleshoot persistent or sudden drain
When one app remains at the top
- Confirm that the app’s foreground use explains the percentage.
- If it does not, open its battery-management page and apply an optimized setting.
- Use the app again under normal conditions.
- Check Battery usage after the next meaningful charge period.
- Restore unrestricted behavior if a notification or background task you need is affected.
When the display remains the largest consumer
- Set Screen refresh rate to Standard or Auto select if available.
- Choose a shorter automatic screen-off interval that you can tolerate.
- Recheck Battery usage rather than assuming a specific number of hours was saved.
When drain continues despite reasonable settings
- Record the model, OxygenOS version, charge period and the highest Battery usage entries.
- Check the battery-health or maximum-capacity information if your model provides it.
- Do not expect software settings to restore a low maximum-capacity percentage.
- Contact official OnePlus support for device- and region-specific guidance, especially if the drain is sudden, the phone becomes unusually warm or essential functions fail.
A repeatable maintenance checklist
- Review Battery usage whenever runtime changes noticeably.
- Investigate the largest unexpected app or process before changing unrelated settings.
- Use Standard or Auto select refresh rate if the display trade-off is acceptable.
- Set automatic screen-off to a comfortable but not unnecessarily long interval.
- Optimize background behavior only for apps that do not require reliable background activity.
- Keep essential notification and synchronization apps on a less restrictive setting when needed.
- Enable Battery Saver only when its feature and app restrictions are acceptable.
- Use optimized or adaptive charging for long-term battery-health management, without treating it as an immediate runtime guarantee.
- Escalate low maximum capacity or unexplained persistent drain to official OnePlus support.
This sequence preserves essential phone functions while targeting the settings most likely to affect everyday consumption. It also leaves every change reversible, so you can keep the balance of runtime, smoothness and background reliability that suits your use.
