Export your data before you deactivate or delete an account. While you are still signed in, request the platform’s fullest archive, include every available content and relationship category, download it, test the files, and keep two copies. A follower list is not a reliable address book, so contact important people separately before you leave.
The order matters: inventory dependencies, request the export, validate the download, make a second backup, then remove posts or close the account. Deletion can be irreversible, can remove your access to the archive, and does not always remove material you posted.

1. Inventory what you could lose
Make a short record before opening an export form. Write down your username, profile URL, recovery email address and phone number. Save the names of any apps or websites where you sign in with this account; deleting the social account can strand those logins. Note saved items, drafts, private messages you may need, lists, and media that exists only on a phone or computer rather than on the platform.
Preserve human contacts separately
Followers and following lists usually identify accounts, not a dependable way to reach a person after you leave. Ask important contacts for an off-platform email address or phone number while your account is active. Keep that information in a private address book rather than assuming an export will contain usable contact details.

Check device-only material
Open your phone and computer galleries for original photos, videos, screenshots, voice notes and drafts. A platform archive cannot include a file that was never uploaded or that remains only in an app’s local cache. Copy those originals into your backup set before you remove the app or sign out.
2. Request the official export while signed in
Use the account’s own privacy or data-download controls, not an unverified downloader. Menus and category names change, so read the confirmation screen and select the broadest date range available.
Facebook and Instagram through Meta Accounts Center
Meta places Facebook and Instagram downloads in Accounts Center. The center can request information from both accounts at the same time. Instagram also supports transferring photos and videos to another service, which can create an off-device copy without waiting for account deletion. The menu labels and available categories can change; inspect the generated package rather than assuming a combined request contains every item.

X
On X, open Settings and privacy → Your X data → Request data. The archive is delivered as a ZIP containing HTML and JSON files. X says the package can include profile information, posts, Direct Messages, Moments, attached images, videos and GIFs, followers, accounts you follow, your address book, Lists, inferred interests and demographic information, and advertising information. Preparation can take a few days. Confirm your email address and phone number and remain signed in on the same browser while the request is processed.

Use Settings & Privacy → Data Privacy → Download your data. You can request individual categories or a larger download. LinkedIn lists rich-media URLs, connections, contacts, comments, member follows, messages and shares among the available data. Specific categories may arrive within minutes; LinkedIn says a larger download is emailed within 24 hours and its link remains available for 72 hours. The download feature is unavailable on mobile, so use a desktop browser.
TikTok
TikTok’s official support describes requesting a copy of your data. Users in the EEA and United Kingdom may also authorize certain third-party transfers. Because the cited support result does not establish stable English menu labels or delivery times, follow the wording currently shown in your app or account page and record the request date. Do not assume that a transfer option or a particular category is available in every country.
No export workflow was established in the cited official result for Reddit. Treat Reddit separately: preserve anything you need from your profile and communities, then remove posts and comments yourself if they must disappear. Deleting the account is irreversible, removes access to the account and its history, and does not automatically delete posts or comments. Reddit says its removal or anonymization process commences within 90 days.

When a form offers checkboxes, choose all relevant categories rather than only photos. Use the widest date range, including all time, unless you intentionally need a limited period.

Read the category descriptions before submitting. A checkbox labelled contacts may mean contacts you uploaded, not every person who follows you. A connections export may omit email addresses that another member chose not to share.
4. Download and validate before leaving
Do not close the account when the request is merely submitted. Wait for the notification, download the package, and test it while the account still works.
- Download the original package. Keep the ZIP or other delivery file untouched. Record the download date and the date range selected.
- Create a working copy. Extract a duplicate into a new folder for inspection; retain the original as a recovery copy.
- Open representative media. Test photos, short videos, long videos and animated files from different years. Confirm that files play and are not zero bytes or merely broken links.
- Check HTML and JSON. Open the index or HTML pages in a browser and inspect JSON in a text editor. Confirm that timestamps, captions, usernames and message threads appear sensible.
- Compare expected folders and categories. Look for posts, messages, followers or connections, contacts, saved items and account history that you selected. Missing folders can mean a category was not offered, the request is still incomplete or the platform supplied a link list rather than files.
- Test the date range. Find an old item and a recent item. If either is absent, submit a broader or corrected request before deleting anything.
X warns that its archive may take a few days to prepare. LinkedIn’s larger download link lasts 72 hours, so download it promptly and make your second copy before that window expires.
5. Keep two independent copies
Store one verified copy on your computer and a second on a portable external SSD or reputable cloud-storage service. Do not erase the original ZIP after extracting it. Open files from both copies, or at least verify that each copy has the same folders and file counts, before you proceed.

Use a strong device passcode and encryption for sensitive archives. Messages, contact data and inferred-interest files can expose other people as well as you. Limit sharing permissions on a cloud copy and remove public links. If you later reorganize the archive, preserve the untouched original so a mistaken edit does not destroy your only source.
6. What each platform normally supplies
The following comparison reflects the documented controls and their stated limits. A platform can change categories or retention windows, so treat the generated archive as authoritative for your account.

7. Understand links versus actual files
An export can describe media without preserving a playable original. LinkedIn explicitly lists rich-media URLs, so save the underlying files separately if you need offline access and the links require a still-active account. X lists attached media in its archive; open several entries to confirm whether the package contains files or references. For Meta, the documented transfer of Instagram photos and videos to another service is a practical way to create a separate media copy. TikTok’s cited guidance does not establish the file format, and Reddit’s cited result does not establish an export at all.
8. Protect follower and connection information
Exporting a relationship list is not the same as exporting permission to contact everyone on it. Preserve usernames and profile URLs only for the personal continuity you need, and avoid publishing another person’s private contact details. For professional connections, save the context of the relationship and ask for an email address directly when an ongoing relationship matters. LinkedIn may omit connection emails by the member’s privacy choice, so an export cannot fill that gap.

9. Final exit sequence
- Finish validation. Confirm that the archive opens, media plays, expected dates are present and both backup copies exist.
- Remove content that should not remain public. On Reddit, delete posts and comments before account deletion because deleting the account does not remove them automatically. Apply the same principle on any service where you need a specific post gone.
- Cancel paid subscriptions and transfers. Check subscriptions, creator tools and third-party authorizations so charges or automated access do not continue.
- Move dependent logins. Replace social sign-in with an email-and-password login, passkey or another supported method on every connected service.
- Save recovery information. Keep the final username, export location and any confirmation emails with your personal records.
- Deactivate or delete only after the preceding checks. LinkedIn warns that closing the account removes access to account data. Reddit deletion cannot be reactivated.
10. Troubleshooting common failures
The archive is missing a category
Check the request summary first; the category may have been unchecked or unavailable for your region. Submit a second request with a wider date range if the platform allows it. For LinkedIn, request the missing category separately because individual categories can arrive faster than the large package.
The download link expired
Request a new archive while the account is still active. LinkedIn’s larger-download links remain available for 72 hours, so an expired link requires another request rather than a recovery attempt from the old message.
Media open as links or fail to play
Keep the account active, open the URL while signed in and save the original file where permitted. If the platform only supplies a URL, preserve the URL and the surrounding metadata in your archive, but do not claim that you have an offline copy.
You cannot complete the request on a phone
Use a desktop browser for LinkedIn because its download feature is unavailable on mobile. For other services, switch to the platform’s web settings if the app hides categories, and verify that you are using the account whose data you intend to export.
You are locked out
Recover the account through its registered email or phone before attempting deletion. This is why the recovery details and connected-app dependencies belong in the initial inventory; deleting an account that is still the sole sign-in method can lock you out of unrelated services.
