Export your AI account before you cancel or delete it, then treat the downloaded archive as a private backup—not as a guaranteed migration package. ChatGPT and Claude provide different export and transfer options, and neither export automatically recreates your old chats, saved memory, custom instructions, or interface on another service. Request the archive while you still control the account, save reusable prompts and memory separately, inspect what you received, and confirm that the destination platform accepts the format before assuming anything can be imported.
What an AI export does—and does not do
An export gives you a copy of information held by the source provider. It is useful for reference, record keeping, compliance, and rebuilding your working setup elsewhere. It is not the same thing as an account transfer. A ZIP file containing conversations does not by itself create matching conversations in a new account, preserve folder structure, restore attachments, or recreate the source assistant’s behavior.

Keep three categories separate during a move:
- Conversation history: your past chats and account data supplied in the provider’s archive.
- Saved memory: facts or preferences an assistant stores for future replies. Memory often has its own export or import control.
- Custom instructions and reusable prompts: text you wrote to shape responses, including system-style instructions, prompt templates, snippets, and workflow notes.
These categories can be delivered through different screens or files. Finding a conversation archive does not prove that memory or custom instructions are included, so preserve each category deliberately.

Prepare before you request anything
Make an inventory of what you need
List the information that would be difficult to recreate. Include long-running project chats, decision records, research notes, uploaded-file references, prompt libraries, custom instructions, assistant personas, and any memory entries that affect recurring work. Mark each item as “must keep,” “useful reference,” or “safe to discard.” This prevents a large archive from giving you a false sense that every important setting survived.
Secure access to the source account
Do not close the subscription, delete the account, or remove the email address used for sign-in until the export has arrived and you have opened it. Exports are sent through the account’s registered delivery channel and may require you to be signed in to the requesting account when downloading. If an organization owns the workspace, identify the administrator or owner who is permitted to export before you begin.
Choose a private backup location
Store the downloaded archive in an encrypted location with access controls. An encrypted USB flash drive can be an optional offline copy, but it is not required; a protected computer or encrypted cloud vault can serve the same purpose. Keep at least one backup separate from the device you use daily, and do not leave the archive in an unprotected shared folder. AI chats can contain personal details, credentials accidentally pasted into a prompt, business information, or confidential files.

How do I export my ChatGPT history and data?
Request the official ChatGPT archive
- Sign in to the personal ChatGPT account whose data you want to keep.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Choose Export data and confirm the request.
- Wait for the message from OpenAI stating that the export is ready. The help guidance allows up to seven days for delivery.
- Open the download link while signed in to the same requesting account, and save the ZIP to your protected backup location. The link is available for 24 hours after the message is sent.
The ZIP includes chat history and other relevant account data. The exact file list can change, so inspect the archive rather than assuming that every setting appears in one readable document.
Understand ChatGPT’s documented account-transfer workflow
OpenAI also describes a limited method for moving exported conversations between personal ChatGPT accounts: upload the exported conversation material into a new conversation in the destination personal account. That gives the new account a reference to the old material. It does not recreate the original conversations as separate entries with their original timestamps, titles, attachments, or interface state, and it is not a general import route into another provider.

Business and Enterprise workspaces cannot use the ChatGPT settings export described above. If your conversations belong to an organization, ask the workspace administrator about the organization’s retention and export process before you lose access. A personal-account procedure should not be treated as permission to extract company data.
Preserve ChatGPT-specific working context
After downloading the ZIP, open a copy—not the only backup—and identify which files contain conversations and which contain account or configuration information. Separately copy your custom instructions and important prompt templates into a plain-text or document file that you can review. If a prompt depends on a file, tool, or model setting, record that dependency beside the prompt; the text alone may not reproduce the original result in a different service.

Request a Claude export from the web app or desktop
- Sign in to Claude on the web app or in Claude Desktop.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy.
- Start the data-export request and follow the confirmation prompts.
- Watch the account email for the download message.
- Download the archive within the 24-hour validity period and store it in your protected backup location.
Anthropic’s guidance covers individual Free, Pro, and Max users. The export control is not available in the iOS or Android apps, so use the web interface or desktop application instead. If no email arrives, check the address associated with the account and its spam or security folders before submitting another request.
Organization accounts follow a different path
For Team or Enterprise Claude organizations, export access is restricted to organization owners. A member who can view conversations may still lack permission to produce an organization-wide export. Confirm who owns the workspace, what data the organization permits you to retain, and whether an internal approval process applies.
Claude conversation exports are not personal-account imports
Anthropic states that a personal Claude conversation export cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Keep the archive for reference, search, and records, but do not plan a one-click restoration between personal accounts. If you are changing email addresses or subscriptions, complete the export while the original account remains accessible.

Export Claude memory separately
Claude’s memory import/export control is designed to move or back up memory, not to transfer a complete conversation archive. Use the memory feature when your goal is to preserve the assistant’s stored preferences and facts, and use the general data export when your goal is to retain conversations and account data. Treat the two outputs as separate backups with separate checks.

Even when a platform offers a memory export, make a human-readable copy of the information that matters: preferred terminology, recurring constraints, project background, accessibility needs, writing style, and facts you want a new assistant to know. Remove stale or sensitive entries before carrying them to another service. A concise context document is easier to audit than a hidden memory store and can be supplied selectively in a new conversation.
Save custom instructions and reusable prompts outside the archive
Prompt text is portable only if you actually retain it. Create a document or folder with one file per important workflow. For each prompt, record:
- The prompt itself, preserving placeholders and required input fields.
- The intended task and a short example of a successful output.
- Any model, temperature, tool, file, or formatting assumptions.
- Information that must remain private and should not be pasted into a public service.
- The date you last verified the prompt and the changes you made during migration.
Separate permanent instructions from one-off conversation context. A paragraph such as “write for our internal legal team” may belong in a reusable instruction, while a project deadline or customer record belongs only in that project’s controlled context. This separation reduces the chance of exposing old personal or business details when testing a new provider.
Use a small test set before rebuilding everything
Select three to five representative prompts: a short factual request, a long structured task, a prompt that uses a file, and a prompt that depends on your preferred tone or format. Run them on the destination platform with the minimum context needed. Compare the outputs for structure, instruction-following, citations, file handling, and privacy controls. Record adjustments instead of overwriting your original templates so you can revert when a change makes results worse.

Check whether the destination can import anything
Ask five concrete questions in the destination’s official documentation
- What formats are accepted? Look for an explicit file type, schema, or upload procedure rather than a promise to “move your data.”
- What account types qualify? Personal, paid, team, education, and enterprise accounts may have different controls.
- What is actually created? Determine whether the result is separate searchable chats, one reference conversation, a memory record, or simply a downloadable backup.
- Are attachments, timestamps, titles, and metadata retained? A text-only import can omit the context that made an old answer understandable.
- What happens to private content? Check retention, training, administrator visibility, and deletion controls before uploading an archive.
The current official material reviewed here does not establish a Google Gemini procedure or prove that Gemini accepts a ChatGPT or Claude archive. Check Google’s destination documentation at the time of your move. Until it documents a compatible process, keep the original archive and migrate only selected prompts or a carefully edited context document.
When there is no compatible importer
Use a manual, selective migration rather than uploading your entire history indiscriminately. Keep the original archive offline, create a short project summary for each active matter, and copy only the prompts needed for current work. Preserve links between summaries and the original archive’s file names or conversation identifiers so you can locate the source later.
Inspect and validate the downloaded archive
- Confirm that the ZIP opens and that its size is plausible for the account’s activity.
- Make a second copy before reorganizing files or converting formats.
- Look for conversation records, account information, and any configuration or memory files supplied by the provider.
- Open several old conversations, including one with an attachment or long thread, to see what is readable and what is absent.
- Search for sensitive strings such as passwords, API keys, addresses, or customer identifiers and protect the archive accordingly.
- Record the export date, account used, and storage locations in a private inventory.
Do not edit the only copy to make it easier to read. Keep an untouched original and work from a duplicate when converting data into Markdown, PDF, CSV, or a personal index.

The download message has not arrived
Check that you requested the export from the account you intend to keep, verify the registered email address, and inspect spam, quarantine, and security-notification folders. Provider guidance allows ChatGPT requests up to seven days; avoid deleting the account while waiting. If the request remains unresolved after the stated window, use the provider’s current support route and include the account type and request date without sending sensitive archive contents.

Both documented ChatGPT and Claude download links expire after 24 hours. Request a new export rather than relying on an old message or a forwarded link. Open the replacement promptly while signed in to the requesting account.

The export option is missing
Check whether you are in a mobile app, an organization workspace, or an account type that follows a separate policy. Claude’s control is available on the web app and Claude Desktop, not its iOS or Android apps. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces do not offer the described settings export. Organization owners or administrators may need to handle the request.
The new platform rejects the archive
A rejected upload does not mean the source export failed. It usually means the destination does not support that archive format or account workflow. Keep the untouched ZIP, read the destination’s current import rules, and use a manually prepared context document or selected prompt files if no supported importer exists.
Old answers look different after migration
Different models, system instructions, safety policies, tools, retrieval settings, and available files can change an answer even when the prompt text is identical. Preserve the original response beside the prompt, note the source model and date when known, and treat the new output as a fresh result rather than a restoration.
A platform-aware switching checklist
- Inventory conversations, memories, custom instructions, reusable prompts, and attachments before cancelling anything.
- Confirm who owns the source workspace and who is authorized to export it.
- Request the official ChatGPT export from Settings > Data controls > Export data, or the Claude export from Settings > Privacy on the web or desktop.
- Wait for the provider’s delivery message and download promptly while signed in to the requesting account.
- Keep an untouched archive plus a separately protected backup.
- Export or copy memory through its dedicated control when available; do not treat it as a conversation archive.
- Copy custom instructions and prompt templates into reviewable files, including their assumptions and sensitive-data warnings.
- Inspect several files from the archive and document what is missing.
- Read the destination platform’s current official import instructions and verify account eligibility, accepted formats, and privacy terms.
- If no importer exists, move only the context and prompts needed for active work and retain the full archive privately for reference.
- Test representative prompts before rebuilding an entire workflow.
- Delete or revoke old copies, sessions, and shared links only after you have verified the new setup and met any retention obligations.
What to keep as your long-term migration package
A useful migration package has four layers: the untouched provider archive, a searchable index of important conversations, a prompt and custom-instruction library, and a concise context document containing approved memory items. Keep a note identifying the source account, export date, platform version or plan when known, and any files that were not included. This structure lets you answer two different future questions: “What did the old assistant say?” and “How do I reproduce the workflow now?”
Preserve the original archive even after a successful move. A destination may later change its importer, your account may be closed, or you may need to demonstrate the provenance of a decision. At the same time, do not retain sensitive data indefinitely without a reason. Apply your normal retention schedule, encrypt backups, limit access, and securely delete copies that no longer serve a business or personal purpose.
Bottom line
Export first, then migrate selectively. ChatGPT provides a personal-account export and a limited reference workflow between personal ChatGPT accounts; Claude provides personal exports but does not document importing one personal conversation archive into another personal account. In both cases, download links are time-limited, memory is distinct from chat history, and custom prompts require their own backup. A verified archive plus a carefully edited prompt and context library is safer and more portable than assuming any AI platform can recreate your old account.
