Before you close an AI account, preserve two different things: the provider’s data archive and the working context that makes the assistant useful. Request and verify the official export first, then save your prompts, custom instructions, preferences, memories and important files in formats you control. Finally, check what the destination can actually import. An archive may be useful as a reference without recreating your old sidebar, settings or subscriptions.
This guide covers the documented paths for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini as of 2026, including eligibility, file limits, privacy implications and the gaps between export and migration.

Start with an inventory, not the export button
Export tools handle different account objects differently. Make a short list before requesting anything so you do not mistake a downloaded ZIP for a complete backup.
- Important conversations: identify projects, decisions, research and correspondence you may need to quote or search later.
- Reusable prompts: collect prompts you wrote or refined, including role definitions, constraints, examples and formatting instructions.
- Custom instructions and preferences: record tone, coding conventions, units, language, accessibility needs and preferred answer structure.
- Saved memories: note facts or preferences the assistant has retained. Memory is usually a separate feature from chat history.
- Attachments: find documents, images, spreadsheets or other files that you still have a right to keep and may need in the new service.
- Account and workspace details: check subscriptions, team membership, shared projects and administrator-controlled retention before you cancel or leave.
This inventory is a planning aid, not a promise that every provider exports every category. Export scope and import support vary by product, account type, geography and policy.

Prioritize what is irreplaceable
Start with conversations that contain decisions, customer or project history, original drafts, technical explanations or information you cannot recreate. A long transcript is less useful if you cannot identify why it mattered, so add a short note beside each priority thread describing its purpose and any files it references.
Separate material you authored from material the assistant generated. Your own prompt wording, templates and instructions are usually easier to reuse than a complete transcript. A concise project summary can also be more portable than hundreds of turns of exploratory conversation.
Export ChatGPT data and verify the ZIP
Personal-account export steps
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account that owns the data.
- Open the profile menu and choose Settings.
- Select Data controls, then Export data, and choose Export.
- Select Confirm export.
- Wait for the email or SMS notification, then download the archive while signed in to the requesting account.
OpenAI says delivery can take up to seven days. The download link expires 24 hours after it is sent, so download it promptly and make a second copy in storage you control. Open the ZIP rather than assuming it is complete; confirm that the conversations and other files you need are present. Deleted chats cannot be restored from an export.

Do not wait until the last minute if you are transferring from a managed workspace. OpenAI advises requesting, downloading and checking an export before a personal workspace is removed during a move to a managed workspace. An earlier link or another request may no longer be available after that change.
Who can use self-service export?
Settings-based export is available to signed-in Free, Go, Plus, Pro and eligible Edu users. Self-service export is not available for Business, Enterprise or Healthcare workspaces; a workspace owner must handle the request. Edu availability depends on the user’s role and the organization’s settings. A managed workspace may also apply its own retention, compliance, memory and access policies.
How to check the archive
Keep the original ZIP unchanged. Make a working copy, extract it locally and look for the conversation history and any numbered conversation JSON files. Open a few recent and older records, search for a distinctive phrase from a priority chat, and check whether expected attachments or metadata are present. A successful download only proves that a file arrived; it does not prove that every conversation or attachment you expected is inside.
What the archive does not do
The export is not a portable account image. OpenAI documents a separate procedure for transferring conversations between personal ChatGPT accounts: extract the ZIP, locate conversations.json (larger exports can contain numbered conversation JSON files), start a new conversation in the destination account and upload the file. The destination chat can use the file as reference, but the old conversations do not return as separate sidebar threads. Subscriptions, settings, memories, custom GPTs, files and workspace membership do not move with that upload, and personal accounts cannot be merged.

Uploading the JSON is therefore a reference strategy, not a restoration. If you need a particular answer, copy the relevant exchange into a project note or create a short summary with dates and links. That makes retrieval easier when the destination assistant cannot navigate the archive exactly as the original service did.

Export steps and eligibility
Individual Claude Free, Pro and Max users can export conversation and user data from Settings > Privacy in the web app or Claude Desktop. The iOS and Android apps cannot initiate an export. A download link arrives by email and expires 24 hours after delivery.

For Team or Enterprise accounts, only the Primary Owner can access exports. Enterprise organization exports are managed from Settings > Data management. Confirm the account type before looking for the control; an absent button may be an administrator restriction rather than an error.
Claude’s personal-account limitation
Anthropic states that exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Keep the archive for records, searching or manual extraction, but do not plan a direct restore. Moving a personal account into a Team or Enterprise organization is a specific organizational transition, not a general personal-account migration.
That limitation makes a separate prompt and memory file especially important. Treat the Claude ZIP as an evidence copy of your account, then rebuild the useful working context with reviewed summaries and reusable instructions in the destination account.
Save prompts, instructions and working context separately
Create a plain-text or Markdown file that you own. Use headings so you can paste only the relevant section into a new assistant.
- Identity and role: explain what you do and the kind of help you expect.
- Response rules: specify tone, length, structure, citation style, code language and whether the assistant should ask clarifying questions.
- Reusable prompt library: store prompts with a title, purpose, required inputs and an example of a good output.
- Active projects: summarize goals, terminology, decisions, open questions and constraints instead of copying an entire chat.
- Preference and memory summary: include only information you want the new provider to retain.
Keep sensitive material out of a general prompt file unless it is necessary. Remove passwords, access tokens, financial details and private information about other people. Save a dated Markdown copy before editing it for a destination’s import format.
Make the document usable after a provider change
Put stable instructions at the top and temporary project notes in separate sections. Label items as “always,” “when relevant” or “for this project” so a new assistant does not treat a one-time request as a permanent preference. Include a short example of your preferred output, because examples often communicate formatting requirements more clearly than adjectives such as “concise” or “professional.”
For each important project, record the current status, key names and definitions, decisions already made, unresolved questions and the files that support those facts. This preserves context without exposing every private detail from an old conversation.
Move memory with the destination’s documented workflow
Claude memory import
Anthropic describes memory import as experimental and focused on work-related topics. In the current Claude web or Desktop interface:
- Ask the source assistant to list the memories and context it has about you.
- Review the result and edit the request if you want to exclude sensitive or personal details.
- In Claude, open Settings > Memory > Start import.
- Paste the prepared result and select Add to memory.
- Review what Claude learned afterward and correct or remove anything inaccurate.
Anthropic’s guide also suggests saving the extraction as Markdown when the source assistant can generate it. Because the feature is experimental, unrelated personal details may not be retained even when the import succeeds.

Ask for a factual list rather than a flattering profile. Check names, dates, preferences and project status line by line. If the source assistant produces sensitive material you do not want to transfer, remove it before pasting. Keep the edited Markdown as your human-readable record even after Claude has accepted the import.

Gemini provides a prompt-based route rather than a universal archive restore:
- Open Settings & help > Import memory to Gemini.
- Copy Gemini’s generated prompt into the source assistant.
- Ask the source assistant to produce the requested memory summary.
- Paste that response back into Gemini and add it as memory.
Google says imported information is used as context for future conversations. Treat the generated summary as a draft: inspect it for errors, omissions and information you did not intend to disclose. You can keep a clean copy of the summary outside Gemini so you can update it when projects or preferences change.

Use five questions when evaluating any destination: What exactly transfers? Do old chats reappear as threads or only as searchable content? Which archive format and size are accepted? Are your account type, age and location eligible? What happens to memories, files, subscriptions, workspace access and retained activity?
Import a ZIP into Gemini within its current limits
Requirements and restrictions
Google’s current Gemini help documentation requires a personal Google Account, access to the source AI account and an account holder aged 18 or older. The feature is unavailable for work, school and supervised accounts and is currently unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. Eligibility can change, so check the in-product notice before preparing a large archive.

What happens after import
Imported chats are saved in Activity. Google says imported and continued Gemini chats are used to improve Google services, including training generative AI models; review Activity and privacy controls before uploading sensitive material. Imported conversations can be searched and deleted individually.
Uploading the same archive again adds new conversations and overwrites previously imported ones. If an import is interrupted, some chats may be partial. Google recommends deleting the import entry and trying again rather than treating a partial result as a complete backup. After processing, search for several known phrases and open both short and long conversations before deciding the transfer worked.
Protect the archive while you keep it
Exports can contain sensitive account information. Store the ZIP and any extracted JSON in a location you control, restrict sharing permissions and avoid leaving the download in a public or shared folder. A local computer or existing backup storage is sufficient; a USB flash drive is only an optional storage choice and does not automatically provide encryption or security.

Keep the original archive unchanged and work from a copy when extracting prompts or converting files. Record the account, export date and any password or encryption method you used in a separate secure note. Do not email an unprotected archive to yourself if your mailbox is shared or subject to retention you do not control.
Check who can access backup folders, synchronized cloud drives and shared computers. If you create a working Markdown file, protect it to the same standard as the archive because it may contain a more readable summary of private projects. Delete temporary extracts from download folders when your verification is complete, while retaining the protected original you still need.
Review privacy, memory and billing before closing the old account
ChatGPT controls are separate
ChatGPT’s model-improvement setting does not delete or hide saved chats. Deleting chats or deleting the account is a separate action. Memory settings are also separate from model-improvement controls. If you are in a managed workspace, organization policies may determine retention, compliance, memory and who can access exports.
Gemini Activity is part of the decision
Because imported and continued chats are saved in Activity and may be used to improve Google services, inspect the destination’s Activity and privacy settings before uploading an archive. Decide whether the convenience of searchable imported history justifies that retention and use for the material you plan to transfer. You can manage or delete activity, but review the controls before uploading rather than relying on cleanup afterward.

Before cancelling, check active paid plans, invoices, shared workspaces and administrator access. OpenAI specifically recommends reviewing Plus or Pro subscriptions when transferring conversations between accounts. Exporting data does not cancel a subscription, and closing an account can remove access needed to retrieve a later export.
Confirm which account is paying for each service, especially if you sign in with multiple email addresses. A data export, a subscription cancellation and a workspace departure are separate actions. Complete each one deliberately and save confirmation records where appropriate.
Common failure points and how to avoid them
- Closing first: deleting or leaving the source account can remove the access needed to request or download an export. Export and verify while access still works.
- Assuming memory is in the ZIP: preserve a separate, reviewed memory summary and prompt file.
- Expecting a sidebar clone: ChatGPT’s JSON upload is reference material, not separate restored threads, and Claude does not support personal-account archive import.
- Uploading without checking eligibility: Gemini’s age, account-type and regional restrictions can block an otherwise valid archive.
- Ignoring link expiry: ChatGPT and Claude links expire after 24 hours after delivery, even though ChatGPT delivery itself may take up to seven days.
- Trusting an interrupted import: Gemini can leave partial chats; delete the import entry and retry.
- Re-uploading casually: Gemini says another upload adds conversations and overwrites previously imported ones, so keep track of which archive you used.
- Sharing the archive for convenience: exports may contain sensitive account information. Use controlled storage and limit access.
A safe switching checklist
- List the conversations, prompts, memories, instructions and files you actually need.
- Request the source provider’s export while the account or workspace is still accessible.
- Download within the provider’s expiry window: up to seven days for ChatGPT delivery, then 24 hours for its link; 24 hours for Claude’s link.
- Open the archive and verify representative conversations, attachments and JSON files.
- Make a protected local copy and keep the original unchanged.
- Create a separate Markdown document for prompts, custom instructions, preferences and project context.
- Use Claude’s or Gemini’s documented memory-import flow if that is your destination, and review the resulting memory.
- Check the destination’s account, age, geography, file-size and daily-upload rules before attempting a chat import.
- Upload only material whose privacy and retention terms you accept.
- Search the destination, inspect imported records and delete partial or unwanted imports before closing the source account.
- Confirm subscriptions, workspace membership and billing changes separately.
- Only then cancel, delete or leave the old account.
What a successful migration looks like
Success is not necessarily an identical copy of the old interface. For a personal ChatGPT transfer, success may mean a new conversation can answer questions from an uploaded JSON archive. For Gemini, success may mean the ZIP has processed, imported chats appear in Activity and the records are searchable. For Claude, success may mean your prompt library and reviewed memory summary recreate the useful context even though the personal archive itself cannot be restored.
Test the result with three or four real tasks: ask for a response in your preferred format, check a project-specific fact, retrieve an older conversation and attach a file you intentionally carried over. Correct the prompt or memory document when the answer is wrong instead of assuming the export failed. Keep the source archive until you have verified the destination and completed any billing or workspace transition.

Can I import my full ChatGPT history into another ChatGPT account?
Not as a full account merge. Upload the extracted conversations.json, or numbered conversation JSON files from a larger export, into a new conversation in the destination account. It can reference the file, but old chats do not return as separate sidebar threads, and subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, files and workspace access do not move.
Can Claude exports be restored to another personal Claude account?
No. Anthropic says exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Use the archive for records and manual extraction, and recreate useful context with a prompt library and the separate memory-import workflow.
How do I move my memory to another AI?
Use the destination’s documented memory flow. Claude’s process is Settings > Memory > Start import: ask the source assistant for a reviewed memory list, paste it and choose Add to memory. Gemini’s process is Settings & help > Import memory to Gemini: copy its prompt to the source assistant, then paste the generated summary back into Gemini.
