Export your Claude data while you still have access
An export is the safest way to preserve Claude conversation data and the user data associated with your account before an account change, lost sign-in method, organizational departure, or deletion. Start the request from a web browser or Claude Desktop while you are signed in. The mobile applications cannot initiate exports.
For an individual Free, Pro, or Max account, and for a Claude for Work Team Primary Owner, the menu path is Settings > Privacy > Export data. An Enterprise Primary Owner uses Settings > Data management > Export Data to export organization data. Anthropic then processes the request and sends an email to the address associated with the account. The download link works only for a signed-in user and expires 24 hours after the email is delivered.

Use the link in Anthropic’s current instructions if you want to verify labels before starting: How can I export my Claude data?. Interface wording and plan rules can change, so a label that differs slightly from the steps below is a reason to check that page, not to assume the export is unavailable.
Choose the correct export path for your account

Anthropic’s Roles and Permissions page identifies requesting data exports as a Primary Owner capability for Team and Enterprise plans. The page about how Anthropic handles Work-plan data explains that the customer organization may access and export users’ conversation history: Does Anthropic act as a Data Processor or Controller?. That means a work-account member should not wait until the last day of employment or contract access to request a copy through the organization’s approved process.
How to export an individual account or Team Primary Owner account
These steps apply to an individual Claude account and to a Team Primary Owner using the account-level export route.
- Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop. Use a browser or the desktop application, not the iOS or Android app. Confirm that you are signed in to the account whose conversations you need.
- Open the account menu. Click your initials in the lower-left corner of the Claude interface and select Settings.
- Open Privacy. In Settings, select Privacy. This is where Anthropic places the individual and Team Primary Owner export control.
- Choose Export data. Select Export data and submit the request. If Claude asks you to confirm the account or action, check that the displayed email address is the one you can still access.
- Monitor the account email. Anthropic sends the download link to the email address associated with the Claude account. Check spam, junk, quarantine, and any organizational mail filter if the message is not immediately visible.
- Download promptly. Open the email while signed in to Claude, follow its link, and save the export before the 24-hour window ends. The link expires 24 hours after delivery, not 24 hours after you happen to notice the message.
The official export instructions describe a small processing delay but do not promise a fixed generation time. Do not treat the absence of an immediate email as proof that the request failed; allow time for processing and check the address associated with the account.
How Enterprise Primary Owners export organization data
Enterprise exports use a different menu and are intended for organization data rather than a personal conversation-copy workflow.

- Open Claude in a web browser or Claude Desktop and sign in as the Enterprise Primary Owner.
- Click your initials in the lower-left corner and select Settings.
- Open Data management.
- Select Export Data and submit the organization export request.
- Watch the Primary Owner’s associated email address for Anthropic’s download message.
- Sign in and download from the emailed link within 24 hours of delivery.
Anthropic has a separate process for Enterprise audit logs. The export instructions do not establish that an ordinary data export contains audit logs, so do not use the export as a substitute for an audit-log request when compliance or investigation records are required.
What happens after you request an export
The email goes to the account address
Anthropic describes the export as containing conversation data and user data for the account. The request is processed, then a message with a download link is sent to the email address associated with Claude. If the account uses a work address, make sure you will retain access to that mailbox for the entire request and download period.
You must be signed in to download
The link is not a public file URL. Anthropic states that you must be signed in to your account to download your data with the link. If the link opens a login screen, authenticate to the same Claude account that requested the export rather than switching to another account in the same browser.
The link expires after 24 hours
The expiration clock starts when Anthropic delivers the email. Download as soon as practical instead of postponing it. If the link has expired, return to the relevant export menu and request another export. The instructions do not state how many repeat requests are allowed or how long a downloaded file remains available on Anthropic’s systems.
The file format and generation time are not specified
Anthropic’s current help article does not identify whether the download is JSON, HTML, CSV, or another format, and it does not provide a precise processing deadline. Plan around the 24-hour download window, but do not promise yourself or someone else a particular format, exact completion time, or retention period unless Anthropic gives you those details for your account.

If you use Claude through a work organization
Team and Enterprise Primary Owners
Primary Owners have the documented export capability. A Team Primary Owner starts in Privacy; an Enterprise Primary Owner starts in Data management. The distinction matters because following the Enterprise path on a Team account, or the Team path on an Enterprise account, may leave you looking in the wrong section.

Members and other non-primary roles
The permissions documentation lists data-export requests as a Primary Owner function, not a general member, admin, or ordinary owner function. If you are a member, ask the organization’s Primary Owner or administrator how to obtain a copy and whether company policy permits personal retention. Do this before your identity-provider account, company mailbox, or workspace membership is disabled.
Organization control of work data
Work-plan data can be accessible to and exportable by the customer organization. A personal copy you request should therefore be handled according to your employer’s retention, confidentiality, and offboarding rules. Exporting a conversation does not grant permission to remove confidential company information from approved systems.
If you can no longer log in
Use Anthropic’s support route rather than repeatedly guessing passwords or creating a second account. Open the How to Get Support page, open the Help Center messenger, and choose “I can’t login”. Explain that you need assistance with a data export and provide the account email address, the type of account, and any relevant subscription or organization context that support requests.
This is an assistance route, not a guaranteed recovery or export. The support instructions also cover account-deletion and subscription issues for people who cannot sign in, but they do not promise that every inaccessible account can be restored or that an export can be produced without authentication. If you still have any valid session open in Claude Desktop or a browser, use it immediately to request the export before troubleshooting the lost login.

Export before deleting your account
Deleting a Claude account is permanent. Anthropic says: “Please note that deleting your account is permanent and you will no longer have access to saved chats.” Read the complete account-deletion instructions before taking that step.
Recommended order for paid Pro or Max accounts
- Request and download your export while you are signed in.
- Open Billing and cancel the Pro or Max subscription.
- Wait until the current subscription period ends, as Anthropic’s deletion instructions direct.
- Delete the account only after confirming that the downloaded copy opens and is stored where you intend to keep it.
The sequence avoids deleting access while a paid period or export request is still in progress. If multiple Claude accounts are associated with one email address, specify which accounts you want deleted when following Anthropic’s deletion process; do not assume one deletion request identifies every account automatically.
Make a usable, safe copy of the download
Anthropic does not require an external drive or recommend a particular storage product. A second copy is practical advice because a single downloaded file can be lost through a damaged device, accidental deletion, or a later account problem.
- Download the file immediately after the email arrives and note the date and account it belongs to.
- Keep the original unchanged. If you need to convert or extract information, work from a duplicate so the downloaded package remains available for reference.
- Store a second copy securely. An encrypted personal drive or an approved secure storage location can provide redundancy; choose a destination appropriate for the sensitivity of your conversations.
- Protect access credentials. Treat the export and its email link as private account data. Do not forward the message or paste the link into a public ticket, chat, or document.
- Respect work and third-party information. Conversation exports may contain confidential business material or other people’s personal information. Keep work-plan data in locations allowed by your organization’s policy.
- Verify the copy. Confirm that the download completed, the file is not zero bytes, and your operating system can open or unpack it. Anthropic does not specify a particular format, so use the file extension and the accompanying documentation rather than assuming it is a text transcript.
Troubleshooting common export problems
There is no “Export data” option
- Confirm that you are in Claude on the web or Claude Desktop; the mobile apps cannot initiate exports.
- Check that you opened Settings > Privacy for an individual or Team Primary Owner account.
- If you are an Enterprise Primary Owner, check Settings > Data management instead.
- If you are a work-account member, ask your Primary Owner or administrator; the documented permission is not a general member capability.
- Verify that you are signed in to the intended account, especially if your browser has several Claude sessions or accounts.
The email has not arrived
Allow for the processing delay mentioned in Anthropic’s instructions, then check the exact email address associated with the account, spam and junk folders, and organizational filtering. Do not request deletion while waiting for the export. If you have lost access to the mailbox or cannot sign in, use the Help Center messenger’s “I can’t login” route.

Request a new export from the same Settings location. Anthropic says a new export can be requested after the 24-hour link expires. When the next message arrives, download it immediately while signed in.

The link opens the wrong account
Sign out of other Claude sessions, sign back in to the account that made the request, and open the email again. If the account uses an organization’s single sign-on, complete that organization’s sign-in flow rather than creating a new personal account with a similar address.
You deleted the account before exporting
Deletion removes access to saved chats permanently according to Anthropic’s deletion guidance. You can still contact support through the Help Center messenger and choose “I can’t login”, but the support page does not guarantee that deleted or otherwise inaccessible data can be exported. Treat support as a possible assistance route, not as a replacement for an export made before deletion.
A practical pre-offboarding checklist
- Identify every Claude account you use, including personal and work accounts.
- For each account, record whether you are an individual user, Team Primary Owner, Enterprise Primary Owner, or ordinary work-plan member.
- Request the export from the correct menu while you can sign in.
- Keep access to the associated email address until the message arrives and the download is complete.
- Download within 24 hours of delivery and verify that the copy is intact.
- Make a second secure copy if the conversations are important.
- For work accounts, confirm that retention and confidentiality policies allow the copy and determine who must approve it.
- Cancel a Pro or Max subscription in Billing and wait for the current subscription period to end before deleting the account.
- Only then remove the account, and specify the correct account if several are associated with one email address.
What this export process does—and does not—establish
The documented process establishes that Claude can provide conversation data and user data for eligible accounts, with the request initiated in the web or desktop interface and the result delivered by email. It also establishes the 24-hour download limit and the sign-in requirement.

Those details should not be assumed from the existence of an export button. If you need a compliance record, a machine-readable archive, or audit history, ask Anthropic or your organization for the procedure that specifically covers that requirement.
Bottom line
Do not wait for a lost password, disabled work mailbox, expired subscription, or account deletion. While signed in, request the export from Settings > Privacy > Export data for an individual or Team Primary Owner account, or from Settings > Data management > Export Data as an Enterprise Primary Owner. Download the emailed file within 24 hours, keep it secure, and use Anthropic’s Help Center messenger only as a fallback if you can no longer log in.
