One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo export WebP to JPG, open the .webp file in an editor that supports WebP, choose Export, Export As or Save As, select JPEG/JPG, set a suitable quality value, and save to a new filename. Do not merely rename photo.webp to photo.jpg; changing the extension does not encode the pixels as JPEG.
JPEG is lossy and has no transparency channel. Keep the original WebP, choose a background for transparent areas, and inspect the exported file before replacing anything.
Choose the right conversion method
| Situation | Best approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One image | Use a desktop image editor with WebP support | Fastest setup, but each file is handled manually |
| Many images or a repeatable workflow | Use a locally installed command-line image tool | Requires installation and checking the capabilities of your build |
| Transparency must remain | Keep WebP or export to PNG | JPG cannot store an alpha channel |
| Images contain sensitive information | Prefer local software | Online converters require an upload; retention and privacy policies vary by service |
Convert one WebP image in an editor
- Make a copy of the source. Work from the copy and keep the original WebP unchanged.
- Open the copy in an image editor that explicitly supports WebP input.
- Use the editor’s Export, Export As or Save As command. Menu labels differ between applications and operating systems.
- Set the output format to JPEG or JPG. These names refer to the same image format.
- If a quality control appears, choose a value appropriate for the use. Higher quality normally preserves more detail and creates a larger file; lower quality produces a smaller file with more visible compression.
- Choose a new filename such as
photo.jpgand save it in a separate output folder when possible. - Reopen or preview the JPG. Check its dimensions, orientation, sharp edges, text, colors and file size before uploading or deleting the WebP.
What happens to transparent pixels?
WebP can contain transparency, while JPEG cannot. During export, transparent pixels must be composited against a solid color, often white. If the editor exposes a background-color control, set it before exporting. If the transparent edges are important, use PNG or retain the original WebP instead of converting to JPG.
Why renaming the extension fails
The extension only tells an application what format to expect. A WebP file renamed to .jpg still contains WebP data, so upload forms and older programs may reject it or report that the file is corrupt. An export or conversion operation must rewrite the image using a JPEG encoder.

Batch conversion with local tools
For recurring jobs, use a locally installed image-processing application that can both read WebP and write JPEG. ImageMagick’s format documentation lists support for WebP and JPEG, but available delegates, command syntax and options can differ between builds. Check your installation’s local help and format list before processing a large collection.
Check capabilities first
Confirm that the installed build reports both WebP and JPEG. If WebP input is missing, the command may fail even though ImageMagick itself is installed. If JPEG output is missing, install a build with the required delegate rather than silently producing another format.
A typical ImageMagick command
On installations using the modern magick command, a basic conversion is:
magick input.webp output.jpg
To request a quality setting, a commonly supported form is:

Because package builds vary, run magick -help and the format-list command documented for your version if either command is rejected. Test one file first, then process a copy of the full set. Avoid overwriting the WebP files until the JPG results have been checked.
Google’s reference decoder
Google’s WebP codec distribution includes the dwebp reference decoder. Its documented outputs are PNG, PAM, PPM and PGM, not JPG. It is therefore useful for decoding WebP to a lossless intermediate image, but it is not a direct WebP-to-JPG command. A two-step workflow can add an intermediate conversion step and should be used only when you have verified the exact tools and formats installed on your system.
Preserve as much quality as the format allows
JPEG export is not lossless
JPEG compression discards image information. The amount of damage depends on the encoder, quality setting and source content. Photos usually tolerate moderate compression; screenshots, line art and small text show blockiness and ringing sooner. Export once from the best available source instead of repeatedly opening and saving an already-compressed JPG.
Do not treat WebP size figures as a conversion guarantee
Google describes lossy WebP as 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index, and lossless WebP as 26% smaller than PNG. Those are general format comparisons, not a prediction for your file and not a reason to expect a WebP-to-JPG export to shrink. JPEG output may be larger or smaller depending on dimensions, content and settings.

Dimensions, color and orientation
- Keep the original pixel dimensions unless the receiving service requires a specific size. Resizing and format conversion are separate operations.
- Inspect photos for orientation. Some viewers honor orientation metadata while others display the raw pixel orientation.
- Color-management behavior depends on the editor and export settings. If color is critical, compare the JPG in the same application and in the destination service.
Metadata is tool-dependent
Do not assume that EXIF, ICC profiles, comments or other metadata will survive. Editors may preserve, strip or rewrite metadata according to export settings, and behavior differs by application. If metadata matters, inspect the resulting JPG with a metadata viewer and configure the export deliberately.
Verify the exported file
- It opens normally: preview the JPG in a second viewer or the destination upload form.
- Dimensions match: confirm width and height against the WebP.
- Transparency is intentional: look at formerly transparent edges against the selected background.
- Quality is acceptable: zoom into text, fine lines, foliage and high-contrast edges.
- File size fits the destination: some forms impose limits that are unrelated to the image extension.
- The source remains available: retain the WebP until the JPG has passed the real-world upload or publishing check.
Troubleshooting common failures
The editor says the file type is unsupported
Use an editor or build that includes a WebP decoder. Updating the application may help, but verify support in its documentation or format list rather than relying on the filename extension.
The JPG has a black, white or unexpected background
The source contained transparency. JPEG cannot represent transparent pixels, so the exporter composited them against a background. Re-export with the intended background color or choose PNG/WebP when transparency is required.
The output looks blurry or has halos
Raise the JPEG quality setting, export from the original WebP instead of an already-compressed JPG, and avoid repeated save cycles. Text and line art may need PNG rather than JPEG.

The file is much larger than expected
JPEG size depends on image content, dimensions, encoder and quality. Reduce dimensions when the destination allows it, or lower quality gradually while checking visual artifacts. Do not expect the general WebP size comparisons quoted by Google to predict an individual result.
A batch command fails on only some files
Check for unusual filenames, damaged inputs, animated WebP files, missing decoder delegates and permissions in the output directory. Run the failing file alone, read the tool’s error, and confirm that your installed build supports that specific WebP variant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert an animated WebP to one JPG?
A JPG is a single still image. Decide which frame you need and export that frame; preserving animation requires a format and workflow that support multiple frames.
Should I use JPG for screenshots with text?
Usually not when crisp text or flat graphics are important. PNG or WebP often avoids the ringing and block artifacts that JPEG compression can add.
