To export an OpenSCAD design for 3D printing, complete a full render with F6, inspect the console, then choose File → Export → Export as STL and save an .stl file. Open that file in a slicer, where it is converted into printer instructions. F5 is only a fast preview; a preview that looks correct is not evidence that the model has successfully rendered or forms a valid printable mesh.
What the export step actually does
OpenSCAD creates geometry from a script. Export turns the evaluated geometry into a file that another application can read. For the usual desktop 3D-printing workflow, that file is an STL mesh. The STL is not printer code: a slicer must orient the model, choose layer and material settings, generate supports where needed, and produce the machine-specific instructions sent to the printer.

The reliable sequence is therefore:
- Open the
.scadfile and confirm that the intended top-level geometry is present. - Optionally press F5 for a quick visual check.
- Press F6 and wait for the full render to finish.
- Read the console for errors or warnings and inspect the rendered result.
- Use File → Export → Export as STL, then save with an
.stlextension. - Load the STL in your slicer and inspect it before generating printer instructions.
Menu wording can vary between OpenSCAD releases. If your version presents a different export label, use the equivalent STL command after the F6 render rather than exporting directly from the preview.

F5 preview versus F6 render
Why F5 can be misleading
F5 invokes OpenSCAD’s preview mode. It is designed to respond quickly and uses an approximation of some operations. The preview can contain visual artifacts, omit details, or appear successful when the complete geometry calculation would fail. It is useful for checking camera position, rough dimensions, and whether edits are heading in the right direction, but it is not the export source.

What F6 changes
F6 performs the full geometry evaluation. Boolean operations, intersections, and other computationally expensive operations are resolved before OpenSCAD can export the resulting solid. Wait until rendering has completed, then use that result as the basis for export. If F6 reports an error, exporting the earlier F5 image does not bypass the underlying problem; it merely hides it.
A practical visual check
- Confirm that every intended part appears and that no accidental helper geometry is visible.
- Look for obvious gaps, missing faces, unexpected holes, or thin features that may not survive slicing.
- Rotate the model in the 3D view to check that the outside surface is continuous.
- Use the console output, not only the viewport, to decide whether rendering succeeded.
GUI procedure: export an STL step by step
1. Open and review the script
Open the design in OpenSCAD and identify the object that should be printed. In a script with modules and helper calculations, only geometry that is ultimately invoked at the top level is rendered. A module definition by itself does not place a part in the scene. If the viewport is empty, check that the intended module or primitive is called.
2. Use F5 only as an optional preview
Press F5 when you need a fast check. Treat the result as provisional. Do not use a successful preview as permission to skip the full render.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Render with F6
Press F6. Large models, high-resolution curves, and complex differences may take time. Avoid changing the script while the render is running, and wait for the operation to finish before opening the export command.
4. Read the console
Inspect the console panel for syntax errors, undefined variables, warnings, or messages indicating that no geometry was produced. A viewport can retain an earlier result while a new render has failed, so the console is the authoritative check for the current script.
5. Choose the STL export command
With the render complete, choose File → Export → Export as STL. Select a location and give the file a descriptive name ending in .stl, such as bracket_v3.stl. The extension makes the intended format explicit and is required by some file browsers and downstream tools.

6. Confirm the file before leaving OpenSCAD
Check that the file exists at the selected path and that its size is plausible for the model. A file that is empty, unexpectedly tiny, or missing usually indicates that the render did not complete or that no top-level geometry was available. Do not overwrite a known-good export until you have verified the new one.
7. Open the STL in a slicer
Import the file into your slicer. Inspect the model in the slicer’s layer or cross-section view, not just its three-dimensional preview. The slicer may report non-manifold edges, reversed faces, self-intersections, or disconnected shells. Resolve those warnings before generating printer instructions. OpenSCAD’s job ends at model export; slicing and printer-specific preparation are separate operations.
Choosing an output format
OpenSCAD documents several export formats, but they are not interchangeable. Select a format based on what the next application can read and what kind of data that application needs.
| Format | Typical role | Use for a 3D-printing handoff? | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| STL | Triangulated 3D surface mesh | Yes, when the slicer accepts STL | Contains geometry, not printer settings or machine instructions; validate the mesh in the slicer. |
| 3MF | 3D model container | Use when the receiving application supports it | Support varies by OpenSCAD release and downstream software; confirm compatibility first. |
| AMF | 3D manufacturing format | Only where the next tool explicitly supports AMF | Do not assume an AMF-capable export is accepted by every slicer. |
| OFF | Polygon geometry exchange | Usually for geometry inspection or conversion | Its usefulness depends on the receiving program’s import support. |
| DXF | Primarily 2D CAD drawing data | Not a normal solid-model slicer input | Use for 2D profiles or fabrication workflows rather than a finished 3D object. |
| SVG | 2D vector artwork | Not a direct 3D-print mesh | Useful for laser, plotting, or 2D layout workflows. |
| CSG | OpenSCAD constructive-geometry representation | No, not as a standard slicer handoff | Useful for exchanging OpenSCAD-style geometry, not for printer preparation. |
| PNG | Rendered image | No | It is an image of the model, not printable geometry. |
The OpenSCAD manual’s export discussion includes STL, OFF, AMF, DXF, SVG, CSG, and PNG; command-line documentation also describes 3MF among output types. Availability and menu labels can differ by installed version. When in doubt, check the receiving slicer’s import list before committing to a format.
Command-line export for repeatable jobs
The command-line interface is useful when exporting the same design repeatedly, running a build script, or generating variants without opening the graphical interface. The documented pattern uses -o for the output path; the output extension selects the format.
openscad -o model.stl model.scad
This command reads model.scad, performs the equivalent full evaluation, and writes model.stl. Use a separate output name for each revision so that a failed run cannot silently replace a known-good file.

Supplying parameters with -D
For parameterized designs, -D defines a value at export time. A string value must be quoted correctly for the shell and for OpenSCAD:
openscad -o model.stl -D 'quality="production"' model.scad
The variable must be used by the script. Defining a name that the script never reads has no effect on the geometry. You can use the same approach for dimensions, part selectors, or quality settings, provided the variables are declared and consumed consistently in the design.
Check your installed command-line options
OpenSCAD’s command-line behavior and format-selection details have changed between versions. Run openscad --help on the machine doing the export and verify the option spelling, input path, and output path. In automated jobs, capture the command’s exit status and console output so a render error cannot be mistaken for a successful export.

Batching parameterized parts
A script can expose a parameter that selects one part at a time. For example, a selector variable might choose a base, lid, or spacer. A batch process then invokes OpenSCAD once per selector value and writes a separate STL for each part. This is an automation technique for scripts deliberately structured around selectable parts; it is not necessary for a one-part design.
openscad -o base.stl -D 'part="base"' assembly.scad
openscad -o lid.stl -D 'part="lid"' assembly.scad
openscad -o spacer.stl -D 'part="spacer"' assembly.scad
Keep the selector values and output names unambiguous. After the batch completes, open every generated file in the slicer or a mesh checker; one parameter branch can fail even when another branch renders correctly.
Printable geometry checks before slicing
Manifold validity
A valid STL generally needs a closed, consistently oriented surface: each edge should belong to the expected number of faces, and the mesh should describe an unambiguous inside and outside. OpenSCAD’s language documentation specifically calls out manifold validity when assessing whether geometry can generate a valid STL. A preview can look solid while still containing an open boundary, overlapping shells, or self-intersections.

Common causes of invalid meshes
- Two surfaces merely touch along an edge or point instead of forming a clean volume.
- Boolean operations leave coincident faces or zero-thickness regions.
- Very small features are below the practical resolution of the chosen printer or slicer.
- Separate shells overlap without being intentionally fused.
- Transformations or conditional branches produce an empty object for one parameter value.
How to investigate
- Render with F6 and inspect the console for geometry errors.
- Temporarily isolate suspicious modules or boolean operations and render each portion.
- Increase clearances so touching parts either intersect decisively or remain separated.
- Remove zero-thickness faces and replace knife-edge features with printable thickness.
- Re-export and inspect the new STL in the slicer’s repair or error view.
Do not promise a successful physical print solely because an STL file was created. Printer calibration, material, orientation, supports, wall thickness, and slicer settings determine whether the final object can be manufactured.
Troubleshooting export failures
“Nothing to export” or an empty scene
Check that the script calls geometry at the top level. A module declaration without a module call produces no object. Also verify conditional statements and parameter values; a branch may intentionally suppress all geometry. Run F6 and read the console before trying the export menu again.
F5 looks correct but F6 fails
This is expected when the preview hid a costly or invalid operation. Treat the F6 error as the real failure. Inspect the console message, isolate the operation named or implied by the error, and simplify or repair that geometry before exporting.
F6 changes the shape compared with F5
Use the F6 result. Preview mode is an approximation and can display artifacts that disappear—or expose problems that were hidden—during full evaluation. Compare the intended dimensions and boolean logic against the rendered result, then correct the script if the full render is not the design you intended.
The STL is rejected or repaired by the slicer
Read the slicer’s specific diagnostic. A non-manifold edge, self-intersection, reversed face, or empty shell points to mesh construction rather than a printer setting. Return to the OpenSCAD geometry, make the surfaces unambiguous, render again, and export a fresh file. If the slicer repairs the model automatically, inspect the repaired layers rather than assuming the repair preserved every feature.
The exported file is in the wrong format
Check the filename extension and the command or menu choice used. In command-line workflows, -o and the extension determine the requested output type. In the GUI, select the format explicitly instead of renaming an existing file after export; changing a suffix does not convert the underlying data.
Best Value
A batch export produces one missing part
Run the failing parameter value by itself and inspect its console output. Confirm that the selector string matches the script’s expected value, that the branch invokes geometry, and that the output path is writable. Keep successful files and replace only the failed variant after correcting the script.
Preparing the exported model in a slicer
Import and scale check
Import the STL and verify units and dimensions against the OpenSCAD design. STL does not reliably carry a unit declaration, so a mismatch between millimetres and another unit system can make a part appear unexpectedly tiny or enormous. Correct the source or slicer interpretation consistently rather than scaling by guesswork.
Orientation and build volume
Choose an orientation that fits the printer’s build volume and places critical surfaces where they can be produced accurately. The slicer should show the complete model inside the printable area; an object extending beyond the bed is a preparation problem, not an OpenSCAD export problem.

Layer preview and warnings
Slice a test configuration and inspect the layer preview. Look for missing walls, disconnected islands, unsupported overhangs, or small details that vanish at the selected layer height and nozzle width. Correct the CAD model when the feature itself is too thin or ambiguous; adjust slicer settings only when the geometry is sound.
Save the slicer project separately
Keep the original .scad, exported STL, and slicer project as separate files. The SCAD file is the editable source, the STL is the interchange mesh, and the slicer project contains printer and material settings. Recording the OpenSCAD parameter values used for each STL makes later revisions reproducible.
A repeatable export checklist
- The intended top-level object is invoked in the script.
- F5, if used, was treated only as a preview.
- F6 completed without unresolved console errors.
- The full-render geometry matches the intended part and dimensions.
- The selected export format is supported by the next application.
- The STL filename has the correct
.stlextension when STL is required. - The output file exists, opens, and is not unexpectedly empty.
- The slicer reports no unexamined mesh or unit problems.
- Layer preview shows the required walls, holes, and features.
- The source script, export, and slicer project are versioned together.
Key takeaways
Use F5 to iterate quickly, but always render with F6 before exporting. Check the console, choose the format that the receiving tool actually supports, and treat STL creation as the handoff to slicing—not as proof that a part is ready to print. For one-off work the graphical export path is sufficient; for parameter sweeps or multiple selectable parts, the command-line -o and -D options provide a repeatable route.
