What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Export the editable project first, then export the production assets, capture the missing context, and keep verified copies in at least two locations. A PNG or PDF can preserve appearance, but it cannot replace layers, components, constraints, comments, prototypes, or other project data. The exact deadline, permissions, export menu, and post-shutdown access rules depend on the service, so start with the vendor’s current end-of-service notice and your organization administrator.
This guide uses documented Figma and Adobe XD workflows as examples. It does not assume that every design service offers the same archive format or that a native file will open in another application.

Start with the shutdown notice, not the export button
Before downloading anything, establish what is actually ending. A vendor may be discontinuing an application, removing cloud access, closing an account tier, or ending only a particular feature. Those cases can have different deadlines and different rules for files, prototypes, comments, libraries, fonts, linked media, and shared URLs.
- Find the current vendor announcement. Save the notice, its publication date, and any account-specific message. Do not rely on an old blog post or a social-media summary.
- Confirm ownership and administration. Ask the file owner, workspace owner, or organization administrator who can export restricted projects and where the archive must be stored.
- Record the final export date and time. If the provider has not stated a deadline, treat access as uncertain and begin immediately.
- List what must survive. Include editable files, production assets, prototypes, design-system libraries, fonts, linked media, comments, version history, handoff notes, and any shared links that users still depend on.
- Choose a destination and an owner. Decide who will test imports, maintain the archive, and approve any replacement tool.
Those details are service-specific. The Figma and Adobe documentation below explains export capabilities, not the shutdown status of a particular account or product.

Build a two-layer archive
A useful archive has two complementary layers: a source layer that retains the most editable project representation available, and a delivery layer containing assets that developers, agencies, and future tools can use without reopening the old service.
Layer 1: preserve the editable project
Use the service’s whole-file or native-project export whenever it exists. In Figma, the documented whole-file option creates a .fig copy. Retain the original file name, project path, and export date in the archive. A native file is valuable because it can retain structures that individual image exports cannot, but it may be application-specific: Figma says its different products use their own file formats that can only be opened in Figma (Figma guide to files and folders).
Do not assume that a native archive is a universal conversion. Before the service closes, identify whether the destination application can import it and which elements will be lost.

Export the screens, components, icons, illustrations, photographs, and other files that a team will need independently of the old editor. Use the downstream requirement to select formats:
- SVG: scalable vector artwork and cross-tool transfer where supported. Figma recommends SVG for lossless asset transfer (Figma copy-assets guide).
- PNG: raster output with transparency when required.
- JPG: photographic or other opaque raster imagery when a smaller file is acceptable.
- PDF: review copies, documents, and reference snapshots. Figma’s format documentation notes that PDF text remains selectable in compatible software and suggests a larger export scale for high-density screens (Figma export formats and settings).
Record the intended scale, dimensions, suffix, color settings, and naming convention. Exporting the same icon at several scales without labeling them creates a new recovery problem.
Export a complete Figma file
Figma’s official export guide lists layers, frames, components, groups, sections, a portion of a canvas selected with the Slice tool, an entire page canvas, and an entire file as exportable content (Figma export guide).

Whole-file procedure
- Open the file that must be preserved and verify that you are working in the correct team, project, or folder.
- Use the file’s export or download command and select the option for the entire file. The documented result is a
.figfile. - In the browser, locate the download in the browser’s configured download folder. In the desktop app, choose a file name and destination when prompted.
- Move the resulting file into the managed archive immediately; do not leave the only copy in a personal downloads folder.
- Repeat for every critical file, including separate files used as libraries or templates.
Figma’s interface navigation may vary as it transitions from projects to folders beginning August 3, 2026. Use the current menu labels shown in your account rather than following an old screenshot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExport selected Figma content
- Select the layer, frame, component, group, section, or page canvas that must be delivered separately.
- Open the export controls and add the required format and scale settings.
- For a partial canvas, use the Slice tool where appropriate; for a complete screen or component, select the object itself so its bounds are unambiguous.
- Export a representative SVG, PNG, JPG, or PDF and inspect it before repeating the operation in bulk.
- Use stable names that identify product area, screen or component, state, scale, and format.
Figma states that a viewer can export only when the owner has not restricted copying and sharing. Editors can use the Slice tool. If an export command is missing, ask the owner or administrator to review those permissions rather than assuming the file is corrupt.
Export Adobe XD assets and artboards
Adobe’s XD export documentation, last updated June 6, 2023, says that assets and artboards can be exported as PNG, SVG, JPG, and PDF. It also describes batch export for assets marked for export (Adobe XD export design assets). Because that page is not current to every later application build, confirm the labels and behavior in the installed version before the deadline.
Individual and batch export
- Open the XD document and select the required asset or artboard.
- Mark recurring production items for export when you want a batch operation, or select an artboard for a complete screen export.
- Choose the required format—PNG, SVG, JPG, or PDF—and set the intended scale or size.
- Run the export and preserve the generated files with the source document.
- Open samples from each format and check dimensions, transparency, text, color, and naming before exporting the rest.
Adobe warns that unmanaged color profiles can produce a color discrepancy warning. Treat that warning as a validation task, not as something to dismiss automatically.
Large assets and special content
Adobe’s XD FAQ states that asset export is limited to 16,000 × 16,000 pixels (Adobe XD FAQ). If an item exceeds that limit, export a suitably sized version or divide the artwork according to its implementation requirements. Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance also notes that video and Lottie content may export as a single poster-frame bitmap, so a poster frame is not a substitute for the original motion or animation source (Adobe XD import and export troubleshooting).
The FAQ mentions third-party plug-ins that can extract projects as HTML, CSS, or JavaScript. Consider that a documented possibility for a specific project, not a guaranteed or official full-fidelity migration. Test the output and retain the original XD document.

Choose formats by what the recipient must do
| Need | Preferred archive output | What it preserves | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continue editing in the original application | Whole-file or native project export | Most application-specific structure available from the service | May open only in that application; verify access and import support |
| Move a vector icon or illustration between tools | SVG where supported | Scalable vector geometry | Supports asset transfer, not complete project conversion or prototype migration |
| Implement a raster image | PNG or JPG | Rendered pixels at the exported dimensions | Does not retain editable layers, constraints, or component behavior |
| Review a screen or document | Shareable visual reference; selectable text in compatible software in Figma’s documented case | Do not assume every effect, font, or interaction remains editable | |
| Preserve motion or interactive behavior | Native project plus separate recordings or specifications | Source structure and human-readable reference | Static exports do not establish that prototype interactions, video, or Lottie behavior survived |
Figma’s recommendation to use SVG describes lossless asset transfer. It does not promise that every effect, font, component relationship, prototype interaction, or application-specific field will survive in another tool.
Capture the context that exports usually omit
A folder of native files and images can still be unusable if nobody knows which version is approved or which font a screen requires. Add a context package alongside the exports.
- Screen references: export or capture key screens and states as PDFs or images, including empty, loading, error, and responsive states that matter to implementation.
- Flow maps: document the path between screens, entry points, exits, and major interaction conditions.
- Component and library references: list the source library, component name, variant, and any override that a flat export cannot show.
- Design tokens: record color values, typography roles, spacing scales, radii, elevation, and breakpoint rules in a readable format.
- Handoff notes: explain asset purpose, intended scale, accessibility behavior, localization constraints, and known exceptions.
- Dependencies: identify fonts, linked media, plug-ins, external documents, and licenses that the team must obtain separately.
- Version identity: include the export date, file owner, approval status, and a short change summary.
These are practical archival recommendations, not claims that a vendor’s export automatically contains them.

Check permissions before the deadline
Permission failures are common when a shutdown is announced late. Test exports while the service is still available.
- Can the file owner download the whole project?
- Can an editor export selected layers and slices?
- Can a viewer export, or has copying and sharing been restricted?
- Are libraries, linked files, comments, and version history separately downloadable?
- Does the organization block downloads, external drives, or personal accounts?
- Will the destination administrator accept the archive and its access-control requirements?
In Figma, the official guide specifically distinguishes viewer and editor capabilities and states that viewer export depends on the owner’s copying and sharing restrictions (Figma export guide). Resolve a permission issue with the owner or administrator; do not ask a teammate to bypass a policy.
Store copies outside the service
Once exported, keep at least two copies under organizational control. A practical arrangement is one managed storage location and one independent local copy on an external backup drive or portable storage drive. The required capacity depends on the actual size of the native files, exports, recordings, and documentation; no universal drive size can be inferred from the export guides.

- Create a predictable directory structure, for example
Product/DesignArchive/2026-10-16/Source,Assets,Reference, andNotes. - Keep the original file names where possible, and add a manifest containing export date, owner, format, dimensions, and checksum if your organization uses checksums.
- Copy the archive to managed storage with access limited to the people who need it.
- Make the second copy to an independent location, then disconnect or otherwise protect it according to your backup policy.
- Document who can restore the files and how the destination tool will receive them.
Do not treat a synchronized folder inside the shutting-down service as the second copy. The point is to retain access if the service disappears.

Validate before access ends
Export completion is not validation. Open representative files while you still have credentials and support channels.
- Open native samples. Confirm that the whole-file exports are readable and correspond to the intended projects.
- Inspect assets. Check SVG geometry, raster dimensions, transparency, text rendering, color, and file names.
- Check fonts and links. Identify missing fonts, unavailable linked media, broken references, and assets that were only embedded by the old service.
- Compare key screens. Place the exported PDF or image beside the source view and inspect spacing, clipping, gradients, masks, and typography.
- Test destination imports. Ask the owner of the receiving tool to import samples and record which layers, components, constraints, and interactions remain editable.
- Record losses. Mark prototype transitions, comments, version history, library relationships, animation, and application-specific metadata that did not transfer.
- Reopen from the second copy. A backup is not validated until a person can retrieve and read it without relying on the original service.
Plan for migration limits
There is no single export that guarantees a complete replacement for a hosted design environment. Native files may preserve the most structure but remain tied to the original application. SVG is useful for lossless vector asset transfer, yet it does not carry an entire project’s prototype logic or application-specific data. PNG, JPG, and PDF preserve rendered views rather than editable construction. Comments, version history, permissions, libraries, and shared links may require separate documentation or may not be exportable at all.
Use a small pilot before committing to a destination tool. Import one representative screen, one component with variants, one vector illustration, one raster image, and one prototype flow. Compare the results against the decision axes that matter to your team:
- native-project import capability;
- editable layers and components;
- prototype and interaction support;
- vector and raster fidelity;
- font and color handling;
- comments and version-history transfer; and
- archive access control.
Keep the original native archive even when the pilot succeeds. A migration copy and a preservation copy serve different purposes.

The export command is missing
Check whether you are a viewer, editor, or owner; review copying and sharing restrictions; and ask the organization administrator to perform the export if policy permits. In Figma, viewer export is conditional on the owner allowing copying and sharing.

An asset is too large
For Adobe XD, the documented asset-export ceiling is 16,000 × 16,000 pixels. Export within that limit, split the artwork, or preserve the original project for later reconstruction.
Colors look different
Inspect color-profile settings and heed unmanaged-profile warnings. Compare the exported file in the application that will actually consume it, not only in the source editor.
Video or Lottie became a still image
Adobe’s troubleshooting documentation says these may export as a single poster-frame bitmap. Preserve the original motion source and write down the intended playback behavior; a poster frame cannot recreate animation.
The destination tool opens the file but the design is not editable
That result is normal for many rendered formats. Return to the native archive, test the destination’s documented import path, and classify the result as editable, partially editable, or reference-only.
The browser download cannot be found
Check the browser’s configured download location. Figma documents browser downloads there, while its desktop app prompts for a name and destination (Figma export guide).
