How to export and back up your Fitbit health data

If your Fitbit data is linked to a Google Account, export it through Google’s data-download flow and select Google Health. Choose a private delivery destination and ZIP or TGZ format, create the archive, download it from the email or selected cloud service, and keep a second copy somewhere you control. Google says the export can include activity, exercise, sleep and heart-rate data. It is a copy, not a deletion request.

If you still use an original Fitbit login, the old Fitbit export instructions are now legacy guidance: Google says legacy sign-in access ended on May 19, 2026, and deletion processing for non-migrated accounts began July 15, 2026. Those dates have passed, so an old account may no longer be accessible through the former interface.

Choose the correct export route first

The sign-in method determines where you start. A Google Account-linked Fitbit profile uses Google Takeout’s Google Health product. The former Fitbit-account export page applies only as historical or account-specific guidance for people who never migrated.

Unsure which account is connected Try the Google Account used for Fitbit, then check whether Google Health appears among downloadable products Do not create an export from a different Google Account by mistake

Google’s transition guidance explains how Fitbit accounts moved to Google Accounts and gives the relevant deadlines in its account-migration help page. If the old sign-in no longer works, use the current Google account and support guidance rather than assuming the legacy page will return your records.

Prepare before creating the archive

A health-data export can contain years of activity and biometric history. Preparation prevents a successful archive from becoming an inaccessible or incomplete backup.

  • Identify the Google Account currently associated with Fitbit. If you have more than one Google Account, verify the account name before starting.
  • Choose a destination with enough free capacity for the archive. A computer’s local storage is suitable; a cloud destination must also have available space and permit the Google account to write files.
  • Decide whether you need an offline copy. You can download the archive to a computer and, optionally, copy it to an external SSD or another private storage device.
  • Use a private folder. Health records can reveal routines, locations, sleep patterns and heart-rate history, so do not put the archive in a publicly shared folder.
  • Allow time for processing. Google says a general Takeout archive may take from a few minutes to a few days, and a large Fitbit account archive can take up to a few days.

Export Fitbit data from a Google Account

Google’s current instructions are described in How do I export my Google Health data? and the broader Google Account data-download help page. Labels can change, but the sequence is the same: select the product, configure delivery, create the archive, then retrieve it.

  1. Sign in to the right Google Account. Use the account that now opens your Fitbit information. Starting Takeout while signed in to another account can produce an archive with no Fitbit history.
  2. Open Google’s Download Your Data/Takeout flow. From the Google Account help page, follow the link to the data-download tool. Review the product list rather than accepting an unrelated selection.
  3. Select Google Health. Google describes this export as a copy of Google Health data such as activity, exercise, sleep and heart rate. Make sure Google Health is selected before continuing. The available sub-options and categories shown to your account are the authoritative choices for that export.
  4. Review the scope. Check the products and options displayed by the download flow. If the interface offers category or format choices, select the records you actually need and read the resulting summary before creating the archive.
  5. Choose a delivery method. Google Takeout can email a download link or send the archive to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box. Email is convenient when you want to download manually; a cloud destination can avoid keeping the archive on the email account, but it depends on that provider’s capacity and permissions.
  6. Choose the file format. Takeout offers ZIP and TGZ. ZIP is the more broadly accessible option because common desktop operating systems can open it without specialist tools. TGZ is an alternative if your workflow already supports that archive format.
  7. Create the export. Confirm the settings and submit the archive request. Google will prepare the files in the background; the request does not instantly mirror every change made in Fitbit.
  8. Wait for the ready notification. Archive creation can take minutes to days. A large account may take up to a few days. Do not assume that no immediate email means the request failed.
  9. Retrieve the archive. Open the completion email and follow its download link, or open the selected cloud destination after Google confirms delivery. Save the downloaded archive to a private folder on a computer or other storage with sufficient room.
  10. Make the backup copy. After the download finishes, copy the archive to a second private location if you want protection against a failed drive or accidental deletion. An external SSD is an optional offline location, not a requirement for exporting Fitbit data.

What the Google Health archive can contain

Google’s wording is specific: “Export a copy of your Google Health data, like activity, exercise, sleep, and heart rate.” The exact files and categories depend on what is present in the account and what the download flow offers at the time you request it. Treat the archive as an account export, not as a guarantee that every device measurement ever recorded will appear in one identical file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The archive is useful for personal reference, moving records to another system that accepts the exported formats, or retaining a historical copy before changing accounts. Keep the original files unchanged. If you need to analyze them, work from a duplicate so the archival copy remains intact.

Legacy export instructions for an original Fitbit login

Google’s Health help page still documents the former Fitbit-account procedure, but it should not be read as proof that the old account or interface remains available. The documented sequence was:

  1. Sign in to the original Fitbit account.
  2. Open Fitbit settings and choose Data Export.
  3. Request either a complete account archive or an export of selected recent data.
  4. For selected data, choose the time period, data categories and file format offered by the page.
  5. Confirm the request through the email Fitbit sends.
  6. When the ready email arrives, download the archive and store it privately.

Google states that legacy Fitbit-account access ended on May 19, 2026. It also states that people who did not migrate could download or delete their data before deletion processing began on July 15, 2026. As of October 13, 2026, both deadlines have passed. If an old Fitbit login still matters to you, contact current Google support and follow the account-specific guidance they provide; do not rely on the legacy steps as a promise that the data is still retrievable.

Pick a delivery destination deliberately

The destination affects privacy, convenience and whether you end up with an offline backup. Google documents email delivery and cloud destinations including Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and Box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Destination Best fit Checks to make
Email download link You want to download the archive yourself to a computer Keep the email account secure and verify that the computer has enough free space
Google Drive You already manage files in the same Google account Check Drive capacity, sharing settings and which people or apps can access the folder
Dropbox You use a separate cloud file service Confirm available quota and account permissions before creating the archive
OneDrive Your storage and backup workflow is based on that service Check the destination account’s capacity and sharing controls
Box Your organization already uses Box for private document storage Verify that organizational policies permit personal health-data archives and that the folder is not broadly shared
Local computer, after download You want an offline copy under your direct control Use a private folder and maintain another copy if the computer is your only storage

Cloud delivery is not automatically safer or more private than local storage. Review the destination’s sharing permissions, account recovery options and future availability. If you may close the destination account later, download another copy first.

Store and protect the downloaded files

Keep the original archive in a clearly named private folder and avoid editing the files inside it. A practical arrangement is one copy on your computer and a second copy on an external SSD or another private storage location. The second copy protects against a single drive failure; it does not create a way to restore records that Google has already deleted.

  • Restrict the folder to your user account and review any cloud-sharing links.
  • Use the operating system’s normal disk-protection features if the computer or external drive could be lost or accessed by other people.
  • Do not upload the archive to a public file-sharing link or an untrusted service.
  • After copying, check that the archive is present in both locations and that its file size is plausible for a multi-year history. Do not alter the archival copy while inspecting extracted files.
  • Record which Google Account produced the export and the date you requested it, so a later copy is not confused with an older one.

Important limits of an export

It is a copy, not a deletion command

Google Account Help states: “If you download your Google data, it doesn’t delete it from Google’s servers.” Creating or downloading an archive therefore does not remove the online Fitbit or Google Health records. Any deletion, account closure or retention decision must be handled separately through the account controls that apply to you.

The archive is not a real-time mirror

Google warns that changes made after the request can be absent while the archive is being created. A workout, sleep record or profile change added after you submit the request may therefore appear only in a later export. If the timing of a recent record matters, wait for synchronization to finish and create another archive after the first one is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deleted data may not be recoverable

Google says data is unavailable for deleted accounts and that data already deleted from Google storage is unlikely to be recoverable. An export is a precaution to make before deletion or migration, not a recovery method for records that no longer exist in the service.

Processing can take days

Do not plan a same-minute account closure around the export. General Takeout processing can range from a few minutes to a few days, while Google’s Fitbit-specific guidance warns that a large archive can take up to a few days.

Troubleshoot common export problems

Google Health is not listed

First check that you are signed in to the Google Account that holds the Fitbit data. A different account can show a valid Takeout page without showing the expected health records. If the correct account still lacks Google Health, use the current Google Health help and support flow for that account rather than substituting the old Fitbit route.

The archive email has not arrived

Check the account’s spam or filtered-mail folders and allow for the stated processing window. Large archives can take up to a few days. If the request remains unavailable after that period, return to Google’s account-specific help and verify whether the archive was sent to a cloud destination instead of email.

The download fails because there is not enough space

Free space on both the destination and the computer used to download the file. If you selected cloud delivery, check that provider’s quota and permissions. You can choose a different destination or download to a computer with more room, then copy the completed archive to a second private location.

Recent Fitbit records are missing

Remember that the archive represents the account state captured during processing. Records added or changed after the request may not be included. Confirm that the device had synchronized, then request a new export for the newer period.

The original Fitbit login no longer works

This may be expected rather than a password problem. Google says legacy access ended May 19, 2026, and the non-migrated-account deletion-processing date began July 15, 2026. Use current Google support and account guidance; the historical Settings > Data Export path cannot override those transition dates.

A sensible backup routine

  1. Create the Google Health export while signed in to the correct account.
  2. Download the completed ZIP or TGZ archive to a private computer folder.
  3. Keep the untouched archive as the master copy.
  4. Copy that master to a second private location, such as an external SSD.
  5. When you make a later export, keep the request date in the folder name so you can distinguish versions without overwriting the earlier archive.

This routine gives you a copy under your control while preserving the distinction between an archived snapshot and the live records held by Google.
