The dependable approach is to preserve the correct Edge profile, enable the Extensions category in Edge sync, use Microsoft’s documented exports for passwords and favorites when those are part of your move, and follow the individual extension publisher’s recovery instructions for data that belongs only to that extension. Reinstalling an extension alone is not a guaranteed restore.
What you can back up—and what Edge does not promise
Edge handles several kinds of information differently. A browser profile contains its own bookmarks, extensions, themes, preferences and other personalized settings. Edge can synchronize several of those categories through a signed-in profile, but synchronization is not the same as downloading a portable backup archive.

Microsoft’s Windows Backup guidance points users to Edge sync for Edge preferences and favorites; it does not establish Windows Backup as a complete backup of extension-private state. Likewise, Microsoft’s extension page explains installation and management, not restoration of an extension’s stored data.
Before you start: identify the profile and the data that matters
Use the profile that owns the extensions
Edge profiles are separate containers for personalized settings and extensions. A work profile and a personal profile can have different add-ons, bookmarks and preferences even on the same computer. Open the profile menu in Edge and confirm the name or account shown before changing sync settings or exporting anything. If you migrate the wrong profile, a successful export will still omit the extensions and data you intended to preserve.

Make a preservation list
- List the extensions you actually use and note which ones contain important information, such as saved workspaces, snippets, custom rules, tokens or locally stored projects.
- Separate browser-owned data (favorites, passwords and profile preferences) from extension-owned data. They use different backup routes.
- Decide whether you are synchronizing to another device, creating files for a one-time move, or preparing for a reinstall. Sync is suited to the first case; documented exports and publisher tools are needed for the others.
- Check whether the destination will use the same Edge account and profile. A different profile can have a different extension set and different sync state.
Step 1: Check Edge sync for the correct profile
- Open Microsoft Edge and switch to the profile that contains the extensions and data you want to preserve.
- Open Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then choose Settings.
- Open Profiles, then select Sync. Microsoft’s current desktop path is Settings > Profiles > Sync.
- Review the available category toggles. Turn on Extensions and any other categories you need, such as favorites, passwords, addresses or browsing history.
- Leave Edge signed in long enough for synchronization to complete, then check the destination profile rather than assuming that an enabled switch means every extension’s private database is covered.
The exact list of toggles can depend on the current Edge release and account configuration. Edge’s documented sync list explicitly includes extensions, but the public guidance does not enumerate which private settings or data each extension must expose to sync. Treat the Extensions toggle as preservation of the extension category, not as a guarantee that every extension-specific state will return.
Step 2: Export saved passwords only when you need a file
If your move includes passwords, desktop Edge can export them to CSV. Use this route deliberately rather than creating an unnecessary copy.
- In the same Edge profile, open Settings > Profiles > Passwords (the label may appear as the password manager page in your current release).
- Use the page’s Export passwords command and complete the operating-system or Edge confirmation prompt.
- Save the CSV only in a location you control, and do not place it in a shared folder, public cloud folder or unencrypted removable drive.
- Import it on the destination through Settings > Profiles > Import browser data, selecting the password CSV option documented by Microsoft.
- After verifying the import, permanently delete the CSV and empty the recycle bin or trash. Do not leave it in Downloads, email attachments, backups or version-history folders.
Microsoft warns: “Passwords exported to a CSV are not protected and will be visible to anyone who can see the exported file.” Anyone who obtains that file can read the credentials. Use the export for the shortest practical time and protect the computer and storage location while it exists.

- On the source profile, open Edge’s favorites management or import/export interface and create the HTML favorites file where that option is available.
- Store the HTML file in a temporary, private location.
- On the destination profile, open Settings > Profiles > Import browser data.
- Choose the HTML favorites option, select the file and complete the import.
- Check the favorites bar and folders for duplicates or misplaced items before deleting the temporary file.
An HTML favorites file does not contain a complete Edge profile, extension installations or the private databases that individual extensions may maintain. Use it for favorites only.
Step 4: Reinstall extensions, then verify their private state
When setting up a new computer or a fresh Edge profile, install extensions from a supported source such as Edge Add-ons or the Chrome Web Store, as described in Microsoft’s extension management guidance.
- Sign in to the destination Edge profile before installing extensions if you intend to use profile sync.
- Open the browser’s Extensions page and install the required extension from its supported store listing.
- Allow the extension to finish installation, then open its options or dashboard.
- Sign in to the extension’s own account if it offers one. A publisher account, cloud workspace or built-in export may be the only supported way to recover extension-owned data.
- Compare the destination with your preservation list: check settings, custom rules, saved items, workspaces and other data that matters.
- If anything is missing, stop before deleting the old profile or device. Consult the extension publisher’s documentation or support channel for that specific product.
Microsoft’s installation instructions do not say that reinstalling restores saved extension settings or data. Installation and state restoration are separate operations; a newly installed copy can open with default settings even when the extension itself appears in the profile.
How to determine whether an extension’s data is recoverable
Look for an account or sync control
Open the extension’s options page and look for a sign-in, sync, cloud, account or workspace control. If the publisher documents account-based synchronization, use that method while the source installation is still available. Record the account identity and any recovery codes according to the publisher’s instructions.

Look for an explicit export command
Some extensions expose their own export/import commands in settings. Follow the extension’s exact instructions and note the format, encryption requirements and version compatibility. Do not assume that copying a browser profile folder or an extension’s visible files is supported; the official Edge material does not define a universal procedure for doing so.
Identify data that may be device-local
Custom rules, local projects, cached indexes and other private state may exist only on the original installation unless the extension provides a sync or export feature. The absence of a documented publisher route means you should treat that data as at risk during a profile reset, uninstall or device replacement. Keep the original installation intact until the destination has been checked.

Migration checklist for a new computer or fresh profile
- Confirm the source profile name and account.
- Write down the extensions and identify those with valuable private data.
- Open Settings > Profiles > Sync and enable Extensions and the other required categories.
- Export passwords only if needed; protect the CSV and plan its permanent deletion.
- Export or otherwise preserve favorites through the HTML workflow when applicable.
- Use each extension’s documented account or export feature for private settings and data.
- Sign in to the destination Edge profile and install the extensions from supported stores.
- Import favorites and passwords through Import browser data.
- Open every important extension and verify its settings, saved items and workspaces.
- Keep the source device or profile untouched until verification is complete.
- Delete temporary password and favorites files when they are no longer needed, following the sensitivity of the content.
Common failure modes and fixes
The extension appears, but its settings are blank
Reinstallation proves only that the extension was installed. Confirm that you are in the intended Edge profile, check whether Edge sync has completed, and open the extension’s own recovery documentation. If it offers no sync or export, the missing state may have been local to the old installation.
Sync is enabled, but the destination has no extensions
Check that the source and destination use the same signed-in Edge profile, not merely the same computer account. Return to Settings > Profiles > Sync on both devices and review the Extensions toggle. Account or Edge configuration can affect which toggles are available. Install an extension manually from a supported store if necessary, then verify its private data separately.

You cannot find a complete “export profile” button
That is consistent with Microsoft’s documented feature set. The official pages describe category-level sync, password CSV export and favorites HTML import, not a universal profile archive containing every extension’s private database. Use the route that matches the data type instead of renaming a partial export as a full backup.
The password CSV is still on the computer
Treat it as exposed plaintext. Move it only through a controlled location, import it, then permanently delete the file and empty the recycle bin or trash. Also check whether your file-sync or backup service retained a copy.
A Windows Backup restore did not bring back extension data
Microsoft’s Windows Backup instructions direct users to Edge sync for Edge preferences and favorites; they do not promise a complete extension-state restore. Recheck Edge sync and the extension publisher’s own recovery route rather than relying on Windows Backup alone.
Security rules for extension backups
- Never upload a password CSV to a public or shared location.
- Use temporary storage with access controls and delete the file after import.
- Do not paste extension exports containing tokens, private notes or account data into email or chat.
- Keep the original profile available until the destination has been verified.
- Record which profile and account were used so a later restore does not target the wrong container.
- Prefer a publisher-documented, authenticated sync or export over unsupported copying of internal browser files.
What a complete backup would require
A genuinely complete preservation plan would need three independent pieces: the Edge profile’s browser data, the list of extensions to reinstall, and each extension’s own private state. Edge’s documented sync and export features address parts of the first two categories, but the reviewed Microsoft guidance does not enumerate universal coverage for extension-private settings and data. That boundary is important when planning a device replacement or profile reset: an extension icon returning is not proof that its internal data returned.
For authoritative feature details, use Microsoft’s pages for sync settings, password export, favorites and password import, Windows Backup, extension management and Edge profiles. These documents describe the supported browser-level operations; the extension publisher remains the authority for extension-specific recovery.
