How to Export and Back Up Your Chrome Data Before Switching Browsers

Use separate exports rather than looking for one all-in-one Chrome backup: create a Google account-data archive for the Chrome categories Google makes available, export bookmarks as an HTML file, and download saved passwords separately as a CSV file. Then import each format through the new browser or password manager and verify the results before deleting your old Chrome profile. Keep the password CSV protected and remove it as soon as the move is confirmed.

What you can—and cannot—move from Chrome

A browser switch involves several different kinds of data, and Chrome does not provide one universal export that should be assumed to contain every local item. Your bookmarks, passwords, history, autofill entries, extensions, settings and account-held payment information follow different export paths and may have different import support in the destination.

Start by listing what you actually need. A typical inventory includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bookmarks and bookmark folders
  • Saved usernames and passwords
  • Browsing history and, where supported, open-tab information
  • Autofill data such as addresses
  • Extensions, themes, search engines and browser settings
  • Payment information held in Google Wallet rather than solely in Chrome

Managed work or school accounts can restrict exports. Google also says only data that has not been deleted is downloadable, so an archive is not a forensic recovery of items you previously removed. Chrome labels can change; the paths below reflect Google’s desktop help instructions retrieved on October 13, 2026.

Choose the right export for each data type

Method Primary coverage File or destination Important limitation or risk
Google account-data export Available Chrome account data, which may include autofill, bookmarks, Chrome history, dictionary, extensions, search engines and settings such as themes and apps Downloadable account archive Categories depend on your selections and account availability; it is not promised to be a complete clone of a local Chrome profile. Passwords are handled through Password Manager, and payment information is in the Google Pay/Wallet export.
Bookmark Manager export Bookmarks and folder structure HTML file The receiving browser must support importing browser-bookmark HTML, and its menu names can differ.
Google Password Manager export Saved passwords CSV file The file is readable by anyone who obtains it. It should be protected, retained only as long as necessary and deleted after verification.
Chrome sync Selected data saved in your Google Account and made available on signed-in devices No standalone file unless you also export Sync is a convenience and continuity feature, not an independently retained backup. You choose what is saved.

Using all three export routes gives you a practical safety net: the account archive for supported categories, a portable bookmark file and a separate password export that the destination can process.

1. Export Chrome data stored in your Google Account

Google’s Chrome data export instructions describe creating an archive of personal information stored in the Google Account while you are signed in to Chrome.

  1. Sign in to the Google Account associated with the Chrome profile you are leaving.
  2. Open Google’s Chrome data export page and review the available Chrome categories.
  3. Select the categories you want. Depending on your account and choices, these can include autofill, bookmarks, Chrome browser history, dictionary, extensions, search engines and settings such as themes and apps.
  4. Continue through the export setup, choose the archive delivery options offered, and create the export.
  5. Download the completed archive to a location you control. Record its file name and location so you can check it later.

This archive is useful for retaining account-held data, but do not treat it as a bootable copy of your old profile. The documented category list does not promise every local extension configuration, open tab, cached file or other profile file. If your payment details are what you need, use the Google Pay or Wallet export referenced by Google’s Chrome help; they are not simply another Chrome-password category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A work or school account may make export unavailable or limit what administrators allow. If a category is absent, that does not prove the information never existed; it means the account’s current export options do not offer it.

2. Export bookmarks as a portable HTML file

Bookmarks have the clearest browser-to-browser route because most desktop browsers can consume a browser-exported HTML bookmark file.

Create the file in Chrome

  1. Open Chrome on your computer.
  2. Select More (the three-dot menu), then Bookmarks and lists, and choose Bookmark Manager.
  3. In Bookmark Manager, select More and then Export Bookmarks.
  4. Save the generated HTML file somewhere easy to identify, such as a dedicated migration folder. Do not edit the file unless the destination’s documentation specifically requires it.

Google documents this workflow in Import Chrome bookmarks & settings. The export preserves the bookmark data and folders that Chrome writes to HTML; it does not constitute a copy of your passwords, history or extensions.

Import it in the new browser

  1. Open the destination browser’s bookmark or favorites manager.
  2. Choose its import command and select the Chrome/browser HTML option if offered.
  3. Point the importer to the saved HTML file.
  4. Open several folders and individual links to confirm that the hierarchy and URLs arrived as expected.

Destination menus are not identical. If the new browser does not show a Chrome-specific option, look for an import-from-HTML or import-from-file command. Keep the original HTML file until you have checked the imported collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google states that up to 100,000 bookmarks can be saved in the account for cross-device access. That is a product limit stated in Chrome Help, not a guarantee that every destination browser will display that many comfortably.

3. Export saved passwords—and protect the file

Passwords require a separate export. On desktop Chrome, follow the path documented in Import or export passwords and passkeys with Chrome.

Download the CSV

  1. Open Chrome and select More.
  2. Choose Passwords and autofill, then Google Password Manager.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Find Export passwords and select Download file.
  5. Complete the operating-system or Chrome security confirmation if requested, then save the CSV in a protected location.

The CSV is plain, portable data rather than an encrypted vault. Google warns: “If you don’t delete your password file, anyone who uses the device can open the file and access your passwords.” Do not email it to yourself, leave it in a shared Downloads folder or upload it to an untrusted service. If you retain a temporary copy on removable storage, protect access to that storage and limit who can use it.

Import the CSV at the destination

Google’s desktop guidance describes CSV import into Google Password Manager and explains that password-import support varies by application. The destination may be a new browser’s password settings or a dedicated password manager that accepts CSV files. Read the current instructions for that exact application before starting; field names, duplicate handling and whether passkeys are supported can differ.

  1. Open the destination’s password-management settings.
  2. Select its import command and choose CSV when prompted.
  3. Select the exported Chrome file and wait for the import to finish.
  4. Search for several known sites, including one with a non-obvious name, to confirm that usernames and passwords are mapped correctly.
  5. Delete the CSV from the computer and any temporary locations after verification. A normal delete is not the same as guaranteed secure erasure, so do not assume deleted data is unrecoverable.

Google’s import guidance states that up to 3,000 passwords can be imported at once and that a Google Account can store up to 10,000 passwords. These are documented product limits, not a promise that another browser or manager uses the same limits. Google also notes that an app or site name may not map to the label you expect; search for the entry if it is not immediately visible.

4. Check destination support before you switch

An export is useful only if the destination can read its format. Verify support while Chrome is still available, especially if you depend on a large password collection or unusual settings.

  • Bookmarks: Confirm that the new browser imports browser-generated HTML and whether it places imported items in a separate folder.
  • Passwords: Confirm CSV import, the required column format and whether the destination accepts passwords only or also passkeys. Do not assume a passkey is represented in the same way as a password row.
  • History and autofill: Check whether the destination offers an import path for these categories. The account archive may retain them for reference, but an archive is not automatically converted into live destination data.
  • Extensions and settings: Plan to reinstall extensions and recreate settings when the destination has no compatible importer. Browser-specific features may have no equivalent.
  • Payment information: Handle Google Wallet or Google Pay data through the relevant Google export and the destination’s own payment settings, not through the password CSV.

Google’s password help discusses importing from other applications and identifies several common destination products, but availability and menu labels can change. Treat the destination application’s current documentation as authoritative for the final import step rather than assuming a Chrome export will be accepted unchanged.

5. Verify the migration before abandoning Chrome

Do not sign out, reset the old profile or uninstall Chrome until you have checked the copies you intend to rely on. Use a short, deliberate verification pass:

  1. Open the bookmark HTML file or the destination’s imported bookmark manager. Check top-level folders, a deeply nested folder and several frequently used links.
  2. In the destination password store, find entries from different sites and confirm that the username and password fields are populated. Test sign-in only where appropriate; avoid changing credentials merely to test an import.
  3. Open the account archive and confirm that its download completed and contains the expected files or category folders.
  4. Review the destination’s history, autofill, extension and settings results separately. Mark anything unsupported so you know what must be rebuilt manually.
  5. Keep the old Chrome profile available until these checks pass, then remove temporary password files and any duplicate copies you no longer need.

This verification is a practical safeguard, not a published success-rate statistic. A completed download does not prove that every field was accepted by the receiving application.

Sync versus a retained backup

Chrome can save selected information in your Google Account and make it available on devices signed in to that account. You control which information is saved, and history and tabs have their own sync controls. This is convenient when you move between devices or browsers that can use the same account, but it is not the same as possessing an independently retained file.

A downloaded archive, bookmark HTML file or password CSV can be kept offline or on separate storage for a defined period. That independence matters if you later lose account access, change sync settings or need to inspect what was exported at a particular time. The trade-off is responsibility: downloaded files can be copied, misplaced or exposed, and the password CSV is especially sensitive.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Optional second copy and safe retention

You may keep the account archive and bookmark HTML on a USB flash drive or other separate storage while the migration is in progress. This is an optional convenience, not a requirement or a Google-endorsed device recommendation. Use a storage location protected from casual access, and label the files without putting passwords in the file name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the password CSV separate from ordinary documents.
  • Limit the retention period to the time needed for import and verification.
  • Delete temporary copies from Downloads, cloud-synced folders and removable media when finished.
  • Do not assume a regular delete provides secure erasure.
  • Retain the account archive only if you have a clear reason and a protected place to store it.

Common problems and what to do

The export option is missing

Check that you are signed in to the intended profile and that it is not a managed account with export restrictions. For passwords, use Google Password Manager settings rather than expecting the account-data archive to include them.

The destination cannot see the bookmark file

Confirm that you selected the HTML file created by Bookmark Manager, not the account archive. Look for an import-from-file or import-from-HTML command in the destination’s bookmark manager, then retry with the original file.

Password entries imported under unexpected names

Search by the site’s domain or username. Google notes that app and site names do not always map to the label you expect. If fields are missing, consult the destination’s CSV-format requirements and do not overwrite the original export until you know what must be changed.

The archive downloaded but a category is absent

Review the categories selected during export and remember that only non-deleted data is downloadable. Some information, such as payment details, belongs to a separate Google Wallet or Google Pay export.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You still need an old extension or setting

Use the account archive as a reference for supported settings and extension information, then reinstall or configure the feature manually in the new browser. The documented export categories do not promise a complete clone of every local extension state or profile file.

Final migration checklist

  • Inventory bookmarks, passwords, history, autofill, extensions, settings and payment information.
  • Create the Google account-data archive and confirm that its download completed.
  • Export bookmarks from Bookmark Manager to HTML.
  • Export passwords from Google Password Manager to CSV.
  • Confirm that the destination accepts HTML bookmarks and CSV passwords.
  • Import each file through the destination’s own settings.
  • Verify representative bookmarks, password entries and any other data you need.
  • Keep the old Chrome profile until verification is complete.
  • Delete password CSV copies and other temporary files when the move is finished.
