WhatsApp Web does not provide a documented native export to HTML, CSV, or Markdown. The browser-format workflow described for those files uses the third-party Chrome extension WA Folders: install it, open WhatsApp Web and the target conversation, then export from the extension panel. Its listing says it works with messages currently visible in the open chat, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed complete archive of a long conversation.

The cited WhatsApp Help Center instructions cover Android and iOS, not a native WhatsApp Web command for HTML, CSV, or Markdown. Therefore, a browser export in those formats is a third-party browser operation rather than a built-in WhatsApp Web feature.

WA Folders is listed as version 1.0.2, updated September 9, 2026. Chrome extension screens and plan details can change, so treat the labels below as a guide to the listed workflow rather than a permanent interface specification.
How to export one open chat to HTML, CSV, or Markdown
Use this process when you specifically need a browser-based file. Keep the limitation about visible messages in mind before you start.
- Install the WA Folders extension from the Chrome Web Store and complete Chrome’s installation prompt. Review the permissions shown in your own browser before enabling it.
- Open WhatsApp Web in Chrome and sign in using your normal WhatsApp account. Wait for the conversation list and messages to finish rendering.
- Open the exact conversation you want to save. If the chat is long, scroll through the portions you need so they are rendered in the browser before exporting. Rendering more of a conversation does not prove that every historical message will be captured.
- Open the extension panel from Chrome’s Extensions menu or its toolbar icon. Choose the command to export the currently open conversation.
- Select HTML, CSV, or Markdown and start the export. Save the downloaded file to a folder with restricted access, then open a copy to check that the messages you expected are present.
The visible-message limitation
The WA Folders listing says the export uses messages currently visible in the open conversation. That is the most important qualification in this method. A chat that appears to contain years of history is not necessarily exported in full, and the listing does not establish capture of unrendered messages, deleted messages, or every media type.
Do not rely on this method as the sole copy for litigation, regulated records, a research corpus, or an employment investigation unless you have independently established that its output meets your retention and evidentiary requirements. Keep the original conversation available, record the date of export, and preserve the downloaded file without editing it.

Choosing HTML, CSV, or Markdown
The extension listing identifies the three formats but does not publish a formal schema for each one. The following are practical ways to choose among them, not guarantees about every field or layout the extension may produce.

None of these choices automatically turns the export into a WhatsApp backup. They are document representations for reading or processing, and the extension’s listing does not promise a reversible import.
WhatsApp’s official Android and iPhone export
If you want the supported WhatsApp route, perform the export in the mobile app rather than WhatsApp Web. The Help Center describes the following path:
- Open the conversation in WhatsApp on Android or iOS.
- Tap More options.
- Tap More.
- Tap Export chat.
- Choose Without media or Include media.
- Choose a share or save destination offered by your phone.
WhatsApp describes the result as a text file. Selecting “Include media” can add media to the export package, while “Without media” keeps the export focused on the message text. The Help Center explicitly warns: “Your chat history can’t be re-imported because it’s a text file and not a backup file.” Use WhatsApp’s separate backup features when your goal is restoration inside WhatsApp; do not substitute an exported text file for a backup.

What to do when export is blocked
WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy setting can prevent other participants from exporting a chat. In its April 23, 2025 announcement, WhatsApp says that when the setting is enabled, “you can block others from exporting chats, auto-downloading media to their phone, and using messages for AI features.” The setting can apply to individual chats and groups.
To check it, open the chat, tap the chat name, and look for Advanced Chat Privacy. If the setting is on, an export attempt may be blocked by design. A browser extension cannot legitimately turn that protection into permission. Ask the chat administrator or participants about an appropriate, authorized way to preserve the information instead of attempting to bypass the setting.
Alternative browser exporter and its stated limits
Another Chrome Web Store listing, WA Chat Backup & Exporter, advertises HTML and CSV along with XLSX and JSON. It does not list Markdown. Its listing says the free option is limited to 100 recent text messages per backup and places media downloads among paid features. The listing identifies version 1.0.0, updated June 23, 2026.

Privacy, consent, and handling exported files
A chat export can contain names, phone numbers, private disclosures, business information, images, and messages from people who did not agree to public distribution. Store it like the sensitive record it is.
- Get appropriate consent before sharing another person’s messages, especially outside the original group or organization.
- Restrict access using your operating system’s file permissions or an encrypted storage location. Avoid leaving an export in a shared Downloads folder.
- Keep the original file unchanged if you may need to demonstrate what was exported. Work from a duplicate for analysis or redaction.
- Document context: note the chat name, export date, device or browser used, and whether media was included.
- Remove unnecessary copies from temporary folders, cloud sync locations, and email attachments after the intended task is complete.
WA Folders’ Chrome Web Store description says that data stays in the browser’s chrome.storage.local, that chats are not uploaded, and that the extension has no account or server. These are disclosures from the developer’s listing, not independently verified security findings. The same listing says the extension is not affiliated with WhatsApp.
WhatsApp’s Terms of Service require users to access and use its services only for legal, authorized, and acceptable purposes. The terms also explain that third-party products and services have their own terms and privacy policies. Check the rules that apply to your workplace, jurisdiction, contract, or investigation before exporting or redistributing a chat.

The file contains fewer messages than expected
First, check whether the missing portion was visible in the open conversation when you exported. The WA Folders listing does not promise a complete historical capture. Scroll and render the required portion, export again, and compare the copies; if completeness matters, use WhatsApp’s mobile export as a second record rather than assuming the browser file is exhaustive.

CSV columns look wrong
Open the file in a plain-text editor to see its delimiters and line breaks. Then import it into your spreadsheet with the matching delimiter and UTF-8 encoding instead of double-clicking it. Preserve the original download before changing column types or dates.
HTML or Markdown loses formatting
Formatting is not formally specified in the listing. Test the export in the browser or editor you intend to use, and keep the original file. If the file is for long-term reading, save a rendered copy only after verifying that participants, timestamps, and message order are intact.
The extension will not export
Confirm that the target conversation is open, the page has finished loading, and Chrome has the extension enabled. Then check whether Advanced Chat Privacy is blocking export. Do not disable a privacy control or attempt to evade it without authorization.
A sensible workflow for records and analysis
- Define the purpose: readable archive, spreadsheet analysis, plain-text notes, or WhatsApp restoration. Restoration requires a backup workflow, not an HTML, CSV, or Markdown document.
- Choose the least invasive source. Use WhatsApp’s mobile export when a text file and optional media are sufficient; use a browser extension only when its output format is necessary.
- Limit the scope to the specific conversation and date range you are authorized to handle.
- Export, preserve the original download, and verify representative messages at the beginning, middle, and end of the intended range.
- Record the tool name and version, export date, selected format, and whether media was included.
- Share only a redacted working copy, and delete temporary copies when the task ends.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: use WA Folders for the listed HTML, CSV, or Markdown browser formats, but regard its output as a capture of currently visible messages rather than a guaranteed full WhatsApp history. Use WhatsApp’s Android or iOS “Export chat” for the official text export, remembering that it cannot be re-imported as a backup.
