To export a Photoshop document as a PNG at a specified size, set its pixel dimensions in Image > Image Size if needed, then use File > Export > Export As and confirm the PNG dimensions before exporting. For screen use, match the required pixel width and height; changing PPI alone does not add pixels or alter how the image displays on screen. For print, choose pixel dimensions to suit the physical size and requested PPI.
Pixel dimensions and PPI do different jobs
Pixel dimensions are the image grid: its width and height in pixels. For example, a 3000 × 2000-pixel image contains 6 million pixels. PPI (pixels per inch) describes how densely those pixels are placed when determining a physical print size. Adobe notes that image resolution does not affect how an image is displayed on screen. Adobe’s image-size and resolution guide, updated September 28, 2026, explains the distinction.

For print, physical size in inches equals pixel dimensions divided by PPI. Adobe’s example: a 1000 × 1000-pixel image corresponds to about 13.9 × 13.9 inches at 72 PPI, or about 3.3 × 3.3 inches at 300 PPI. Those are illustrative calculations, not universal printer requirements. Adobe describes 300 PPI as typical for professional printing and 72–96 PPI as typical for screen or web images; use the destination’s actual specification rather than treating those figures as rules for every job.

Check the delivery specification first
Find out the exact pixel width and height required by the website, app, client, or other destination. If a printer gives only a physical size, ask for the intended PPI or the printer’s own specification, then calculate the needed pixels as physical size × PPI.

Resize in Image Size only when necessary
- In Photoshop, choose Image > Image Size.
- Enter the target width and height. Keep the proportions linked if the image must retain its aspect ratio.
- Enable Resample when you need to change the actual pixel dimensions. If you only change the resolution with Resample off, the pixel count stays the same and the associated physical print size changes.
- Choose a suitable resampling method for the artwork, then review the result. Adobe lists Bicubic Sharper as an option intended for reduction and Nearest Neighbor as an option for hard-edged illustrations; these are choices to evaluate, not guarantees of a particular output.
Resampling down removes pixels and information. Resampling up estimates new pixels; it cannot recover fine detail that was absent from the original. If the target aspect ratio differs from the image, decide whether to crop or add canvas. Do not stretch the image out of proportion unless distortion is intended. Export the PNG and verify its dimensions
- Choose File > Export > Export As.
- Select PNG and check the width and height shown for the asset. Photoshop links those dimensions proportionately by default; change them only if the delivery specification calls for it.
- Inspect the preview and asset-list dimensions before exporting. Export As can change image scale, while canvas size controls the outer bounds; confirm the resulting asset matches the required box.
- Choose PNG options for the destination. Transparency produces a 32-bit asset when enabled; Smaller File produces an 8-bit asset when enabled; with both unchecked, Adobe’s documentation says the output is 24-bit.
- Set color handling as required. Export As offers conversion to sRGB and profile embedding; the destination’s requirements determine whether to use them.
- Export the PNG as a delivery copy and retain the layered PSD as the editable source.
Export As includes physical resolution metadata, but that metadata does not add pixels to a screen image. Its controls and PNG options are described in Adobe’s Export As guide.

Use Canvas Size for fixed outer bounds
Use Image > Canvas Size when the specification concerns the complete bounding box rather than scaling the image content—for example, an icon that must sit within a fixed-size square. Scaling changes the image dimensions; changing canvas dimensions changes the surrounding bounds. A canvas smaller than the image clips it, while a larger canvas adds space filled according to document and background conditions. Check the final asset dimensions in Export As. Export multiple sizes or repeat a saved workflow
Create scale variants
For several output sizes, open File > Export > Export As, add relative-size rows such as 1.25x, and assign filename suffixes so the versions are distinguishable. Export the relevant layers, artboards, or document at the required scales, then verify each version’s pixel dimensions. Adobe’s multiple-size export instructions describe this workflow.

Use Quick Export for recurring settings
For a repeated export, configure Quick Export as in Photoshop’s preferences. Options include PNG format, transparency and smaller-file settings, destination, metadata, and color-space handling. Quick Export can export the whole document or selected layers. See Adobe’s export guide for the controls.

Common errors to avoid
- Changing PPI and expecting more screen pixels: with Resample off, changing resolution does not change pixel dimensions.
- Upscaling and expecting recovered detail: interpolation estimates pixels; it does not recreate original image information.
- Scaling when you meant to change the canvas: scaling changes the image; canvas dimensions can clip content or add surrounding space.
- Overwriting the editable source: export a separate PNG. Adobe says saving a copy as PSD preserves layers, effects, and masks. See Adobe’s image-saving guidance.
- Applying a universal PPI number: use pixel dimensions for screen delivery and the printer’s stated physical-size and resolution requirements for print.
