To explore New Austin normally in Red Dead Redemption 2, finish Chapter 6 and continue into the Epilogue. The southern region is designed for safe, ordinary exploration after that transition. Trying to cross into it as Arthur during the main story is restricted and can trigger immediate attacks, so glitches are not a dependable substitute for progression.
The normal answer: finish Chapter 6, then enter the Epilogue
New Austin is one of the five fictional states that make up Red Dead Redemption 2’s world. It occupies the southern portion of the map, but the game does not treat it as ordinary free-roam territory for most of Arthur Morgan’s story.

The reliable route is tied to story progression:
- Complete Chapter 6.
- Continue into the Epilogue rather than attempting to force Arthur across the southern boundary.
- Use the Epilogue’s normal access to travel through the southern map and investigate its points of interest.
Guide coverage of New Austin’s points of interest identifies some locations as inspectable only after Chapter 6, when the southern map becomes safely accessible. That establishes the practical timing for exploration, but it does not mean every activity, encounter, collectible, or interaction uses exactly the same unlock condition.

What New Austin is in the game world
New Austin is a major southern state in the game’s larger five-state setting, not a separate downloadable area or an optional map that must be purchased. Its importance is partly geographical: it completes the southern side of the world map and provides a substantial area to explore after the main Arthur storyline has reached its end.
The timing is deliberate. During most of the main narrative, the game funnels Arthur’s free roaming toward the regions available to him and places strong restrictions around New Austin. After Chapter 6, the Epilogue changes the context of exploration and makes the southern area part of normal postgame travel.
That distinction matters when you read older maps or completion checklists. A point of interest can exist on the world map before the game lets you inspect it as Arthur. Seeing a marker, screenshot, or collectible list is not proof that the location is currently reachable in your save.
Step-by-step route to New Austin
1. Confirm that you are still in Chapter 6 or earlier
If Arthur is your active protagonist and the story has not moved beyond Chapter 6, assume that New Austin is restricted. Do not treat a visible southern outline, a map marker, or an online video as evidence that ordinary access is available in your current state.
2. Finish Chapter 6 through normal story play
Continue the main story until Chapter 6 is complete. The documented access condition is the chapter transition, not a particular horse, weapon, outfit, side mission, or purchased item.
3. Continue into the Epilogue
When the game moves into the Epilogue, keep playing until you have ordinary free-roam control. The Epilogue is the part of the story associated with New Austin access. Do not quit immediately at the transition and assume that every southern point of interest has already become available; some locations may still be tied to progression within the postgame.
4. Open the map and plan a southern trip
Once free roaming is available, use the in-game map to choose a destination in the southern region. Start with a point of interest or other clearly marked destination rather than relying on a remembered route from an Arthur-era save. The map state in the Epilogue is the useful reference for what your current game can inspect.

5. Travel there normally
Ride or otherwise travel through the accessible world as you would in any other free-roam area. The important change is not a special border trick; it is that the story has reached the point at which the region is intended to be explored.
6. Check locations individually
New Austin’s broad accessibility does not prove that every single activity has the same timing. If a point of interest cannot yet be inspected, continue the Epilogue and return later instead of assuming the entire region is broken. Completion guides can identify locations, but the game remains the authority on what your save currently permits.
Why Arthur cannot simply ride across the border
As Arthur, New Austin is not ordinary open country during most of the story. A Gamepressure guide describes Arthur as being attacked automatically when he enters the region. An academic discussion archived by the University of Oulu likewise describes New Austin as inaccessible to Arthur without exploits for most of the game, with normal access associated with the Epilogue or Red Dead Online.
In practical terms, crossing the boundary is not comparable to discovering a blocked road that opens after a short detour. The game uses hostile restrictions to prevent normal Arthur exploration there. You may be attacked or forced out before you can investigate a location, making repeated border attempts a poor way to collect items or complete a map checklist.
That restriction also explains why a screenshot or video showing Arthur in New Austin does not automatically provide a current, repeatable method. Such footage can come from a different game version, a mission-specific state, a community exploit, or an older patch.
Normal progression versus an exploit
| Approach | Story timing | Risk of interruption | Reliability | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal Epilogue access | After Chapter 6 | Southern map is described as safely accessible | Supported by multiple guide sources | Exploration, points of interest, and completion work |
| Attempting to enter as Arthur | During most of the main story | Automatic attacks and other hostile restrictions | Not a normal free-roam route | Not recommended for ordinary progression |
| Community-reported glitch | Usually presented as an early-access workaround | Mission interruption, failure, or forced removal is possible | Version-sensitive and not verified as currently reliable | Only for players who knowingly accept an unofficial experiment |
The trade-off is straightforward: normal progression takes you to New Austin later but preserves the intended story and gives you dependable access; an exploit may appear to provide earlier access but can be patched, fail unpredictably, or interfere with the mission state.
How to treat glitch and exploit guides
Player discussions often use questions such as “How can I explore New Austin as Arthur?” because early access is an attractive challenge. However, the available material does not establish a single exploit that is reliable across current versions and platforms.

- Identify whether it depends on a specific mission. Mission-state glitches can be temporary and can disappear as soon as the objective changes.
- Protect your normal save. Keep a separate manual save before experimenting so a failed attempt does not become your only progress state.
- Expect interruption. Even a successful border crossing may leave you under attack or unable to perform the activity you wanted to complete.
- Do not use an exploit for a time-critical checklist. If a collectible or point of interest matters for completion, the post-Chapter 6 route is the dependable plan.
There is no verified, current exploit procedure established here, so an article that presents one as a guaranteed sequence would overstate the evidence.
Planning your first New Austin exploration trip
Use the Epilogue map, not an Arthur-era assumption
Start from the map state in the save you are actually playing. A marker copied from a guide may represent a point that can be inspected only after Chapter 6 or after an additional part of the Epilogue. Treat the marker as a destination to check, not as a promise that every interaction is already active.
Separate travel access from activity access
“New Austin is open” and “every New Austin activity is available” are different claims. The first describes the region becoming safely traversable after the story transition. The second would require an activity-by-activity list, and the available guidance does not establish one universal unlock for all encounters and collectibles.
Work through points of interest methodically
If your goal is exploration rather than simply reaching the state, make a checklist from the locations you want to inspect and mark each one only after the game lets you investigate it. This avoids confusing a location shown on a map with a location already active in your save.

Keep a clean completion save
Before a long collectible route or an experiment with an unofficial trick, create a manual save that represents your normal Epilogue progress. That gives you a clear recovery point if a mission glitch, failed transition, or unexpected attack disrupts your plans.
What “safe access after Chapter 6” does and does not mean
The phrase “safe access” should be read narrowly. It means the southern map is available through intended story progression rather than being protected by the Arthur-era restriction. It does not establish that every encounter, collectible, challenge, or special activity is unlocked at the exact moment Chapter 6 ends.

- Established: New Austin is an Epilogue area for normal exploration.
- Established: Some points of interest are described as inspectable after Chapter 6, when the southern map becomes safely accessible.
- Established: Arthur can be attacked automatically when attempting to enter during the restricted portion of the story.
- Not established: A single unlock condition that applies to every New Austin activity.
- Not established: A currently dependable exploit that gives Arthur unrestricted access on every platform and version.
This distinction is useful when a guide appears to contradict your save. It may be describing a location’s eventual availability, a later Epilogue state, or an unofficial method rather than the normal first moment at which the region can be visited.
A note about the Del Lobos hideout
Rockstar support material discusses the Del Lobos hideout as an activity available through Story Mode progression. That is relevant to players checking special-edition content, but it should not be treated as proof that all of New Austin unlocks at the same time or that the hideout provides an alternate route into the state.
Use the game’s story progression for general access. Treat the hideout reference as a separate activity-specific detail, not as a border-crossing instruction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need the printed official guide?
No. A hosted description of the Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide emphasizes annotated maps, collectible locations, and completion roadmaps. Those features can be useful if you prefer an offline reference, but they are optional and do not replace the Chapter 6-to-Epilogue progression required for normal New Austin access.
Current retail availability and edition details are not established here, so do not assume that a listed copy is still sold or that every printed edition contains identical material. For simply reaching the region, continue the story; buy or borrow a guide only if its maps and checklists fit the way you want to play.
Troubleshooting common New Austin questions
“I crossed the border as Arthur and was attacked. Is my game broken?”
No. The attack is consistent with the documented restriction. Return to normal story progression and continue through Chapter 6 into the Epilogue.

“I finished Chapter 6, but a particular point of interest is still unavailable.”
Do not assume that the whole region failed to unlock. Guidance establishes the broad post-Chapter 6 access window, not an identical unlock moment for every activity. Continue the Epilogue, keep the location on your checklist, and try again when the game permits the interaction.

“A video shows Arthur exploring New Austin. Why can’t I reproduce it?”
The demonstration may depend on a mission state, a platform, an older version, or a patched exploit. The available material does not verify a universal method, so reproduction is not guaranteed.
“Can I use Red Dead Online to reach New Austin?”
The academic discussion distinguishes normal Epilogue access in Story Mode from access in Red Dead Online. Online access does not change the Story Mode rule for Arthur and should not be used as evidence that the single-player restriction has been removed.
“How do I get to New Austin?”
Finish Chapter 6, enter the Epilogue, wait until normal free roam is available, and travel south using the map. That is the supported route; crossing as Arthur during the restricted story period is not.

Recommended decision for different players
If you want a reliable completion run
Stay with the story, enter the Epilogue, and then work through your New Austin checklist. This minimizes the chance that an attack or mission-state glitch will invalidate your progress.
If you are curious about game boundaries
You can investigate community reports separately, but treat them as optional experiments. Use a backup save, expect version-sensitive behavior, and do not confuse a temporary exploit with an official unlock.
If you are still early in the story
There is no need to rush the border. Continue playing normally and plan your southern exploration for the Epilogue, when the region is intended to be accessible.
The practical takeaway
New Austin is designed to be explored after Chapter 6, through the Epilogue. Arthur’s earlier attempts are restricted and may trigger automatic attacks, while community glitches are unofficial and not established as reliable across current versions. Finish the story, enter the Epilogue, and use that normal postgame access for your points of interest and completion work.
