You can go from a galaxy’s name or sky coordinates to preview images, observation footprints, spectra and downloadable science data without owning a telescope. Start with ESASky when you want an easy visual tour across missions and wavelengths. Use the MAST Portal when you need precise filtering, previews and file retrieval, and use the Hubble Legacy Archive guidance for Hubble-specific searches. The key is to inspect the observation metadata before downloading: an archive result may be a calibrated image, a spectrum or another data product rather than a ready-made color photograph.
What public astronomy archives actually contain
Public archives preserve observations made by space- and ground-based observatories. A single galaxy may appear in ultraviolet, visible, infrared, X-ray or radio data, often from several missions and observing programs. The archive record normally includes the target, sky position, instrument, filter or wavelength, observation date, processing status and links to one or more files.

“Image” is an overloaded word in an archive. Some records are two-dimensional detector images; others are spectra, catalogs, exposure-level files, mosaics or quality-control products. A search for a galaxy therefore does not guarantee a color picture. Read the product type and instrument fields before deciding what to view or download.
Coverage is uneven. A non-result means that a particular archive, mission or search radius found nothing; it does not prove that the galaxy has never been observed. Coordinate errors, alternate names, a target outside an instrument’s field, proprietary access and archive-specific indexing can all affect the result.

Which archive should you use first?
| What you want to do | Best starting point | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Browse a sky region visually and compare missions or wavelengths | ESASky | Browser-based all-sky exploration, observation footprints and cross-wavelength comparisons; the access described by ESA does not require a login for data browsing. |
| Search holdings with mission, instrument and product filters, then preview and retrieve files | MAST Portal | Cross-mission target search, result previews, AstroView footprint overlays and a download basket. |
| Find and retrieve JWST science or ancillary observations | JWST Mission Search | A JWST-specific interface with detailed selection and retrieval controls documented alongside the MAST Portal. |
| Explore Hubble observations for an object or coordinate | Hubble Legacy Archive guidance | Hubble-focused image previews, footprints, interactive display and FITS download instructions. |
ESASky is the gentlest entry point if you do not yet know which mission observed your target. MAST is more suitable when your question already specifies a mission, instrument, filter or product class. The Hubble Legacy Archive workflow is useful when the target is known to have Hubble observations and you want Hubble’s own previews and files.
How do I find images of a galaxy in a public archive?
1. Start with a reliable name or coordinates
Use the galaxy’s common designation, catalog identifier or decimal sky coordinates. The Hubble Legacy Archive guide demonstrates an object-name search with M 100 and also accepts coordinates. In MAST, a target-name search can be refined after the initial query; if a name produces no match, try coordinates and check alternate catalog names.
- Keep right ascension and declination in the coordinate system expected by the archive, normally J2000 unless the interface states otherwise.
- Use decimal degrees when an archive’s coordinate box does not accept sexagesimal notation.
- For a large galaxy, search a region rather than a single point so that observations aimed at its outskirts are included.
2. Inspect the result list, not just the thumbnail
Open the record and identify the mission, instrument, detector, filter or grating, observation date and product type. A thumbnail can look like a conventional photograph even when it is a single-filter exposure or a processed preview. Conversely, a record without a colorful thumbnail may still contain scientifically useful imaging data.
3. Use footprints to verify that the target is actually covered
The Hubble guidance includes an images view and a footprints view showing where observations fall on the sky. MAST’s AstroView panel overlays matched observation footprints. Compare the footprint with the galaxy’s position: a target name can return a nearby field, an offset pointing or a large detector area that only partly covers the object.
4. Preview before selecting files
Preview images help you remove duplicate visits, empty pointings and products that do not answer your question. Check several observations when available; different filters, dates and exposure depths can reveal different structures. Keep the record identifier for every file you select so that you can trace a downloaded image back to its metadata.
How ESASky helps you compare a galaxy across wavelengths
ESASky is designed for sky browsing without requiring prior knowledge of each mission. Enter a target or navigate to a coordinate, then inspect the available observations in the surrounding region. The interface lets you compare the same source across wavelengths and missions, retrieve relevant data and view observation footprints.

A practical ESASky workflow
- Search for the galaxy by name, or move the view to its coordinates.
- Set a field of view large enough to include the whole galaxy and nearby observations.
- Turn on the observation layers or footprints to see which missions cover the region.
- Switch wavelength or mission views to compare how the source changes from one band to another.
- Open an observation record and read its instrument, band, date and data-status information.
- Use the record’s retrieval controls only after confirming that the product is the type you need.
Different wavelengths trace different physical components. Visible light can show stars and dust lanes; infrared can reveal cooler dust and obscured regions. Those interpretations require calibrated data and context, so treat a color composite as a visualization rather than a direct map of “true” colors.

How to search and retrieve files in MAST
MAST supports cross-mission searches and lets you narrow results by mission, instrument and product type. Public data may be retrieved anonymously, although a particular collection can have its own access or authentication rules. The portal provides previews, an AstroView footprint display and a download basket for assembling a set of files.
Target and coordinate search
- Enter the target name in the MAST search field, or supply coordinates when the name is ambiguous.
- Review the returned position and search radius before applying filters.
- Filter by mission or instrument if you need, for example, only Hubble or only JWST observations.
- Filter by product type so that imaging results are not mixed with spectra, catalogs or other products.
- Open individual records and inspect their preview, footprint and metadata.
Building a download basket
- Select the calibrated or otherwise appropriate products rather than every file in the observation.
- Add the selected records to the download basket.
- Review the basket for duplicate visits, different processing levels and files that exceed your storage or analysis needs.
- Start the browser download for a small set, or use the documented scripts and API methods for a large retrieval.
Browser downloads are convenient for a few images. Large programs can contain many exposures and associated calibration files; scripted or API retrieval is more reliable and repeatable. Record the query parameters and product names in your notes so you can reproduce the selection after the archive is reprocessed.
When should you use JWST Mission Search?
JWST Mission Search is dedicated to JWST science and ancillary data, with selection and retrieval controls separate from the general cross-mission workflow. Use it when your question is specifically about JWST observations or when you need JWST-oriented product choices.

ESA states that raw exposures from JWST science programs are available for download to both the scientific community and the public. Availability still depends on the access status shown for the individual observation; an exclusive-access period can temporarily restrict a dataset.
How to explore Hubble observations
The Hubble Legacy Archive workflow is appropriate when you want Hubble-specific previews and retrieval. Search by object name or coordinates, open the images tab, and use the footprints view to verify the field on the sky. The interactive display lets you inspect the observation before downloading a FITS file.
Hubble checks that prevent wrong downloads
- Confirm the instrument and filter; two Hubble records of the same galaxy can show different wavelength ranges.
- Check whether the displayed item is a preview, a calibrated product or another processing level.
- Look at the observation status and any proprietary-access note before expecting an immediate download.
- Use the footprint to distinguish a galaxy-centered pointing from a nearby field.
Can I download Hubble or Webb data?
Yes, public Hubble and JWST observations can be downloaded through their archive interfaces when the record is released for public access. “Public” does not always mean “immediately public”: some observations remain proprietary during an exclusive-access period. The archive record is the authority for the current status.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Download the smallest product set that answers your question. A processed science image may be sufficient for visual inspection, while quantitative work can require exposure-level files, calibration data, weight maps or association products. The archive’s product descriptions determine what each file contains; do not infer processing level from the filename alone.
What do I do with a FITS file?
FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) is a standard astronomical data format used by space- and ground-based telescopes. It can store an image together with headers describing coordinates, exposure details, instrument settings and calibration information. A FITS file is not necessarily ready for ordinary photo software.
For a quick visual inspection
- Open the file in an astronomy-aware FITS viewer or in the browser-based viewer supplied by the archive, when available.
- Choose an image extension if the file contains multiple extensions.
- Apply a display stretch such as linear or logarithmic scaling; raw pixel values often look black or saturated under a default stretch.
- Inspect the header for filter, exposure time, pixel scale and celestial-coordinate information.
For ordinary graphics software
ESA points to FITS Liberator as a way to convert FITS images for standard graphics applications. Conversion creates a visualization; it does not replace the original FITS file or its scientific metadata. Keep the original file unchanged and save the converted image with the stretch and color choices documented.

For analysis
Use software that understands FITS headers and numerical arrays. Preserve units, masks and calibration information, and distinguish a calibrated science product from a raw exposure. If you only need a shareable picture, use the archive preview or a documented conversion rather than editing the science file directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy a search may not show the galaxy you expect
The name is not indexed the way you typed it
Try a catalog designation, alternate name or coordinates. Names can refer to a group, a field or a moving object rather than the exact galaxy.
The search radius is too small
Increase the radius for extended galaxies or offset observations, then confirm the footprint visually so that nearby unrelated fields are not mistaken for the target.
The archive does not hold that mission’s data
ESASky, MAST and the Hubble Legacy Archive have overlapping but different collections. A missing result in one service is not evidence that no observatory has data for the galaxy.
The observation is proprietary
An observation can exist in the archive while its files remain unavailable until the exclusive-access period ends. Check the record’s release or access-status field.
You are looking for a color image where none exists
Many observations are single-band images or spectra. Search for multiple filters if you need a composite, and treat any archive-generated color display as a product of processing choices.
Best Value
A repeatable checklist for saving useful data
- Write down the galaxy name and coordinates used for the query.
- Record mission, instrument, filter or wavelength, observation date and product type.
- Verify the footprint covers the galaxy.
- Preview the product and remove duplicates or irrelevant pointings.
- Check public-access status and processing version.
- Download only the files needed for your purpose, using a basket, script or API for large sets.
- Keep the original FITS files and archive metadata alongside any converted images.
- Note the date of download because holdings, interfaces and JWST processing versions can change.
What a productive first session looks like
Suppose you know only a galaxy’s common name. Search it in ESASky to obtain a visual overview and see which missions have footprints near the target. Open a promising observation and note its wavelength and instrument. If you need a specific Hubble or JWST product, repeat the search in MAST, apply the mission and product filters, inspect AstroView, and place only the relevant records in the download basket. For Hubble-only browsing, follow the Legacy Archive images and footprints workflow. Finally, open the FITS file in an astronomy-aware viewer and preserve the metadata before making a converted picture.
This sequence separates discovery from retrieval: broad visual browsing first, metadata checks second, and downloading last. It reduces the common mistakes of treating a preview as a calibrated science product, assuming every result is an image, or downloading an entire observation when one file would answer the question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an account to browse public galaxy observations?
The archive guidance describes ESASky browsing and public MAST retrieval without requiring a login for ordinary public data access. Individual collections can impose their own access rules, so check the record status.
Recommended Free Tools
Is every archive preview a real-color photograph?
No. A preview may represent one filter, a processed composite, a spectrum or another product. Use the instrument, filter and product metadata to determine what you are viewing.
Why did the same JWST observation change between downloads?
JWST observations are reprocessed with quarterly pipeline builds, so the product version and derived files can change. Save the version information shown with your download.
