If your Android tablet has a compatible microSD slot, you can add space by inserting a card and completing Android’s setup prompt. Choose portable storage for photos, videos and other files that may move between devices. Choose internal (adoptable) storage only when the tablet offers it and you want the card to supplement that tablet’s storage, potentially including apps. Back up every file on the card before formatting: formatting permanently deletes its contents.
First, confirm that your tablet supports this method
A microSD card expands storage only when the tablet has a physical, compatible card slot and software that supports the card. Android’s general instructions do not establish that every tablet includes a slot, nor do they set one universal maximum capacity, card format or speed class.

Recommended Free Tools
- An actual microSD or SD-card slot on your tablet’s specification sheet.
- The card type and maximum capacity the manufacturer lists for that model.
- Any stated format or speed requirements.
- Whether the tablet supports only portable storage or also offers internal/adoptable storage.
Do not choose a capacity or speed rating solely because it is popular for another tablet. The model’s own documentation is the authority for compatibility.

Choose the right storage mode
During setup, Android may offer portable storage or an internal-storage route labelled “Format another way.” Google’s Android Help documentation also uses the term “adoptable storage.” The exact wording and whether both choices appear depend on the tablet.
| Mode | What it can store | Can the card move between devices? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable storage | Files such as photos and videos | Yes, under Google’s general guidance | A card used mainly for media, documents and file transfer |
| Internal (adoptable) storage | Files and apps; it can supplement the tablet’s device storage | No, not in the ordinary way | A card intended to remain with one tablet, when that tablet offers the option |
When portable storage makes sense
Portable storage keeps the card useful as a removable file store. It is the simpler choice when you want to carry photos or videos to another compatible device, or when the card’s purpose is to hold files rather than applications. Under Google’s general Android guidance, apps cannot be installed on the card in this mode.
When internal or adoptable storage makes sense
Internal storage treats the card as an extension of the tablet’s own storage. Google says this mode can hold files and apps and can supplement device storage. The trade-off is portability: the card cannot be transferred between devices in the ordinary way. Select it only if the tablet presents that option and you accept that the card is being dedicated to that tablet.

Formatting permanently deletes data already on the SD card. Google’s official warning is explicit: “If you format your SD card, data will be permanently deleted. Before you format the SD card, back up your files.” Copy anything you need to another storage location before proceeding.

- Review the card for photos, videos, downloads, documents and other files you want to keep.
- Copy those files to a computer, another storage device or a service you already use for backups.
- Open a few copied files to confirm that the backup is usable.
- Only then continue with a format or a change to the card’s storage mode.
The backup requirement applies even if the card is new to this tablet. A card that was previously used in another device may already contain files that the new tablet’s setup will erase.
Set up a newly detected microSD card
Google’s general Android flow starts with an SD-card notification after the tablet detects the card. Keep the tablet powered on and follow the choices shown on screen.
- Insert the compatible card. Use the tablet’s microSD slot and wait for Android to detect it.
- Open the SD-card notification. The notification starts the setup flow for a newly detected card.
- Select the storage purpose. Choose portable storage for a removable file card. If the tablet offers an internal option, select Format another way to reach the internal/adoptable-storage choice.
- Read the format warning. Formatting erases data on the card. Stop and make a backup if you have not already done so.
- Choose when to move content. Android may offer to move content immediately or let you move it later. Select the timing that matches your backup and available time.
- Wait for setup to finish. Keep the card inserted while Android formats it and, if you chose that option, moves content.
Not every tablet displays every screen. A manufacturer can change the labels, omit adoptable storage or provide a different setup sequence, so follow the wording on your tablet rather than assuming that another Android device will look identical.

- Open the tablet’s Storage section.
- Look for the SD card in the storage list and open its setup or format controls.
- Choose portable storage, or use the tablet’s internal/adoptable-storage option if it is offered.
- Confirm the format only after verifying that the card’s files are backed up.
- If Android offers to move content now or later, make that choice and allow the operation to complete.
If you cannot find an SD-card entry, first verify the exact tablet specification and that the card is seated correctly. A missing entry does not prove that every card is unsupported; it can also mean that the tablet has no slot, does not support that card, or uses different menu labels. The manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model resolves that uncertainty.
Understand what happens to apps and files
Files in portable mode
Portable mode is designed for files such as photos and videos. Android’s general guidance allows the card to move between devices in this mode, making it suitable when the card is also a transfer medium. It does not provide app installation on the SD card under that guidance.
Apps and files in internal mode
Internal/adoptable mode can hold files and apps and can add to the tablet’s available storage. Because the card is configured for that tablet, it is not a normal plug-and-play card for another device. Plan to leave it installed in the original tablet and keep a separate backup of important files.

Moving content now or later
The setup flow can offer a choice to move content immediately or defer the move. Choosing “later” does not change the mode you selected; it postpones the content transfer. Use the tablet’s storage controls to locate the relevant move option when you are ready, following the labels supplied by that tablet.

Decide with three questions
When both modes are available, make the decision before confirming the format. These questions map directly to the practical trade-offs:
- What are you storing? Choose portable storage when the goal is mainly photos, videos and other files. Consider internal storage when adding room for files and apps on one tablet is the goal.
- Must the card move to another device? If yes, portable storage is the appropriate model. Internal/adoptable storage is tied to the tablet and is not transferable in the ordinary way.
- Is the card backed up? If no, stop before formatting. Changing the setup can erase the card, and recovery should not be assumed.
What to do if the card is not detected
Android’s general instructions begin only after the tablet detects the card. If no notification or storage entry appears, work through this bounded checklist:
- Check the exact model’s official specifications for a microSD slot and supported card characteristics.
- Confirm that you inserted a card type the tablet lists as compatible.
- Open Settings and Storage to see whether the card appears without a notification.
- Use the tablet maker’s instructions for that model if its labels or setup screens differ from Google’s general flow.
Do not format a card merely to make it appear if it contains files you have not backed up. Formatting is destructive, and compatibility cannot be established from the notification behavior alone.

Changing from portable to internal storage
Whether a tablet permits a change depends on its software. Android’s general setup directions describe choosing “Format another way” for internal/adoptable storage, but they do not promise that every tablet exposes that choice. Treat a mode change as a new setup decision:

- Confirm in the tablet’s documentation that the desired mode is supported.
- Back up every file on the card.
- Open the SD-card controls under Settings and Storage, or use the setup notification if the tablet provides one.
- Read the warning and proceed only when you understand that formatting can permanently delete the card’s contents.
- Choose whether to move content immediately or later when Android presents that option.
If you later need the card for another device, internal/adoptable formatting is the wrong fit. Preserve your backup before changing anything, because the card’s tablet-specific setup is not ordinary portable storage.
Buying guidance when specifications are unclear
The correct purchase starts with the tablet, not with a generic “Android-compatible” label. The available guidance does not provide a universal capacity, speed class or format that works across all tablets. Check the official specification for the exact model before selecting a card.
- Match the card type and maximum capacity stated for the tablet.
- Match any format requirement the manufacturer specifies.
- Match any speed requirement if one is listed.
- Confirm that the tablet’s software supports the storage mode you intend to use.
If the documentation does not state a value, do not infer one from another model or from the tablet’s operating-system version. A card can be physically the right size yet still fall outside the tablet’s supported specifications.
Keep the storage arrangement predictable
Use portable mode when flexibility matters and internal/adoptable mode when tablet-specific capacity matters more than moving the card. Label or otherwise identify the card’s role in your own records, especially if you maintain more than one card. Keep an independent backup of important files regardless of mode: portable cards can be moved and misplaced, while internal cards are tied to one tablet.
For the official, general Android setup flow and its formatting warning, see Google Android Help: Get started with an SD card. Tablet-specific availability, capacity limits and menu labels remain the responsibility of the tablet manufacturer’s documentation.
