To exit, press and hold Volume Down + Power (or the Side key) together for about 7 seconds, until the phone restarts. Samsung’s button names and instructions can vary by model and region, so use support for your exact device if this does not work.
First, identify the screen
Samsung calls the screen reading “Downloading…Do not turn off target” Download mode. People sometimes describe it as “Fastboot,” but the terms should not be treated as interchangeable: match the screen to Samsung’s description before choosing an exit method.

Exit Samsung Download mode
- Press and hold Volume Down and Power or Side at the same time.
- Keep holding for about 7 seconds, until the device restarts.
Samsung US and Samsung Australia give this seven-second procedure for Download mode. If your model does not respond, check the support instructions for your exact model and region. Samsung says the warning not to turn off the device applies when a technician is actively using Download mode during repair; an accidental entry can be exited by turning the device off.
If Download mode appears again
Check the buttons and case
A button held while the device starts can send it into Download mode. Remove the case, check that no key is stuck or being pressed, then restart once. Samsung notes that a case can appear to fit while still pressing the buttons.

Arrange service if the problem persists
If the phone continues to boot into Download mode after you have checked the buttons and removed the case, Samsung recommends visiting a walk-in service center or scheduling a repair.
If the screen says “Android Recovery”
Android Recovery is a different screen, identified by the heading “Android Recovery” and a small-text menu. On that screen, use Volume Up or Volume Down to highlight Reboot system now, then press Power to select it. These instructions are from Samsung Australia’s guidance for Australian-variant devices; if your screen or controls differ, consult Samsung support for your region and model.

If the phone is frozen or stuck on the Samsung logo
A frozen device or Samsung-logo boot problem is not the same as an accidental Download mode screen. Samsung’s separate logo troubleshooting guidance says to ensure the device has adequate battery and use the model-appropriate Power/Side and Volume Down hold. The hold time in that guidance is for a different problem; do not substitute it for Download mode’s approximately seven-second procedure.
For a broader boot loop, Samsung advises checking for physical damage and charging the device; available menus can vary by model and software. A factory reset is a later troubleshooting option and can erase personal information, so it is not an appropriate first response to an accidental Download mode screen. Avoid unsupported firmware
Do not treat Download mode as an invitation to install firmware. Samsung warns that unsupported software installed through Download mode can damage the device or leave it susceptible to hacking. For a device that entered the screen accidentally, use the restart procedure above rather than attempting a flash.
